KARL BARTH’S
Theology
October 30, November 13, December 47:00 pm, B104-106
Session 1: Barth in Context: Against Cultural ChristianitySession 2: Barth’s God: Revealed as HiddenSession 3: Barth’s Christ: Rejected and Elected
Since he burst on the theological landscape almost 100 years ago, probably no Christian theologian has been more influential than Karl Barth. Pope Pius XII held him to be the greatest theologian since Thomas Aquinas, and his thought has shaped the views of thinkers from conservative Catholics to radical Protestants—though his work has been derided as frequently as it is admired. In this three-week course, Professor Ian McFarland of the Candler School of Theology will explore the reasons why Barth, whether respected or reviled, “bestrides the
theological world like a colossus.”
Dr. McFarland earned his M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York and his doctorate from Yale. He is the author of the highly influential study, The Image of God: Envisioning the Invisible God and his co-editor of the Cambridge University Encyclopedia of Theology. He has been especially influential in recent thought about Christian understandings of being human and has written widely on Christian obligation to the “least of these.”

Gloria, RV 589ANTONIO VIVALDI’S
Join the Trinity Chancel Choir, soloists, and orchestra on Sunday, November 9, at 11 a.m. for one of the most enduring and beloved masterpieces of sacred choral music, Antonio Vivaldi’s (1678-1741) sparkling setting of the Gloria in excelsis. This ancient text is an early prose hymn, whose origins have been traced back to “morning prayer” in the Apostolic tradition (c. 380) and to a Greek version of the 2nd century. Vivaldi celebrates the joyful emotional qualities of the familiar text with a bright fabric of choral writing, paired with a festive Baroque orchestration, making for a unique worship experience.

Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from
heaven. The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.
Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.

Over the past several months, members of Trinity’s Spiritual Formation Committee have been involved in researching and developing a series of short website postings designed to introduce or re-introduce various spiritual practices to the Trinity congregation.
So far, the topics include Lectio Divina, Sabbath Observance, Daily Examen, Silent Meditation, Walking the Labyrinth, Journaling and Pilgrimage. These postings are intended to invite active engagement in a wide variety of practices that can enhance our spiritual walk with God. Each piece describes the particular
practice and its historical/biblical background, makes suggestions on how to incorporate the practice in our daily lives, and points to additional resources, including specific opportunities to learn about and engage in the practice at Trinity.
