Simplified transcript

My lord, out of the love I have for some of your friends, I want to make sure you are safe.  Because of this I would advise you to not attend this sitting of parliament because God and man have agreed to punish the wickedness of this time.  Do not think this is a joke, go to your estate in the country where you will be safe, because although there is no sign of any problem yet, this parliament will receive a terrible blow, but they will not see who it is that hurts them.  This advice should not be ignored as it may do you some good, and it can do you no harm because the danger will have passed as soon as you have burned this letter.  I hope God grants you the grace to make good use of it, and that he protects you.

LordMonteagle

You are a Catholic lord, married to Elizabeth Tresham (whose brother Francis was likely to have been one of the plotters)You are alarmed by the letter, and discuss why you think you received it and who sent it with Robert Cecil when you decide to take it to him. You are delighted with King James’ reward money!

King James 1

You are given the letter by Robert Cecil, your chief minister. As you read it you are horrified, as you are scared of assassination. You thank Monteagle for his honesty, and order your forces to search the Houses of Parliament for evidence of the plot. You tell Monteagle you will give him a reward for his actions.

Robert Cecil, chief minister

You are the first to see the letter after Monteagle takes it to court. You thank Monteagle for bringing it to you, and discuss with him what you might think is being planned, and why you have been warned to stay away. You pass the letter to King James himself.

Thomas Ward, Monteagle’s servant

It is you who opens the door to receive the letter, delivered by a man who will not tell you his name, what exactly the letter is about, nor who it is from. You find this frightening and frustrating, and try to get more information from the man before he rushes away.

Unknown man

You are the messenger who delivers the letter to the Monteagle household. You tell Thomas Ward, Monteagle’s servant, that he is to give the letter to his master, that it is very important. You do not say your name, nor who the letter is from, despite being questioned. You make your excuses and leave as soon as the letter is delivered.

Savile Row,

Mayfair, London W1

29th February 1899 Dear Esteemed Sir/ Madam,I am writing to you to apply for the position of chief dog handler at your delightful animal shelter. Although there has been no vacancy advertised, I have been watching your current employees closely and feel, frankly, that I could do a far better job. I have listed below some of the many qualities I would bring to the post:

- I really love dogs, especially ones with spots or unusual markings

- My friends describe me as kind, even tempered, mild-mannered and patient

- I have great skills in needlework, so I could make the puppies little coats to keep them warm!

- I am always extremely smartly dressed. In fact, I would prefer to make my own uniform, ideally out of real fur.

- I have my own vehicle and, indeed, my own chauffeur, which means that I could easily travel to and from the shelter at all hours of day or night.

- I have extensive experience in business, so am more than able to handle money. In fact my mathematical skills are excellent – I can confidently count to over 100!

- I have my own large residence just out of town. I could therefore take any extra puppies – dalmations, for example – into my own home to avoid overcrowding at the shelter.

I feel sure that you can depend on me to be an excellent, kind, trustworthy and honest employee, who has the best interests of our canine friends in mind. My only concern is to further the welfare of these wonderful creatures!Yours most sincerelyMs Cruella de Vil

Steven Armes CV, covering letter and response from Dumbledore: an introduction.

Steven Armes has an impressive résumé—impressive enough, one would think, to secure a teaching job of his choosing. Currently professor of polymer and colloid chemistry at the University of Sussex in England, in the past he worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory; has authored hundreds of scientific papers; and in 2014 became a Fellow of the Royal Society for his pioneering contributions to science. In 2001, believing himself to be a perfect candidate despite his being a Muggle (a person living outside the magical community), he applied for the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the institution made famous by J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of novels. Here is his application letter, and Albus Dumbledore’s reply.
