“Gerlinde’s treatment has a long-lasting effect; it’s not temporary like others have been, so it’s not a waste of money. Two months ago I could not walk or sit, and was told I had arthritis in my hip. I had an MRI which revealed nothing. After Gerlinde treated me, I’ve never gone anywhere else!”

Located on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, we are a
community surrounded by water. The York, Piankatank, Poropotank and North rivers, along with the Mobjack Bay, form the county boundaries. The North, Ware and Severn rivers all flow into the Mobjack. We are a three-hour drive from Washington, D.C., and an hour’s drive from Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia.
Gloucester County’s history dates to before the first Europeans landed in the New World. Chief Powhatan, father of the legendary Pocahontas, and his tribesmen lived along the north shore of the York River, where water, fish and game were abundant. The first English settlers arrived in 1607 from the nearby Jamestown Settlement. They included Captain John Smith, whose life, according to legend, was spared by the interven-tion of Pocahontas.
Gloucester County was the site of some of the earliest settlements in the New World. The English
began granting land patents to set-tlers in 1639, but it took another decade before Gloucester was pro-claimed safe for settlement. George Washington’s great grandfather received a Gloucester County land patent in 1650. His home, Warner Hall, is now the Inn at Warner Hall, a bed and breakfast. John Page, one of Virginia’s governors, was born and lived at Rosewell, where his friend Thomas Jefferson would often visit. Both Washington and Jefferson attended worship services, some-times the same services, at Abingdon Episcopal Church.
Gloucester was officially incor-porated in 1651. Many early planta-tions still dot the area. Few areas in the country can boast so many pre-Revolutionary War homes, churches, public buildings and other structures. Many of these buildings are listed on the National Historic Register and have been featured in Virginia’s Historic Garden Week. Though pri-vate owners now lovingly tend these buildings, some are open to the
public during special occasions throughout the year.
In 1754, the opening shots of the French and Indian War were fired by a Virginia regiment commanded by the young, inexperienced Virginian, George Washington. Governor Dinwiddie, concerned about the French encroaching on Virginia’s frontier, commanded Washington to recruit a force of 300 men to repel the invading French. In doing so, Washington and Dinwiddie inad-vertently sowed the seeds of the American Revolution.
Many people know the history of the Revolutionary War, includ-ing the surrender of General Lord Cornwallis to George Washington at Yorktown. But did you know that Cornwallis’ troops also surrendered at Gloucester Point in 1781? This event is referred to as the “Second Surrender.” Gloucester Point’s military fortifications were strength-ened, rebuilt and reused through the Civil War.

In the 19th century, Gloucester County settled into the post-revolutionary life of the new nation. When war with England came again in 1812, the written records show that Gloucester again sent her share of soldiers into battle. Similarly, the county served in the Mexican War of 1846. One notable Gloucester soldier was William Booth Taliaferro. He was a U.S. Army officer during the Mexican War, a lawyer, a judge, a legislator both before and after the American Civil War, and a Confederate general during the war. He later sat on the board of William and Mary College and the Virginia Military Institute.
Walter Reed was born in Gloucester, where his father was a Methodist minister. Reed was, in his time, the youngest person (at 18) to graduate from the University of Virginia with a medical degree. He went on to fame by proving the connection between mosquitoes and yellow fever. His name is associated with many highly respected medi-cal institutions today.
Thomas Calhoun (T.C.) Walker rose to prominence in the county at the end of the 19th century. Born into slavery in the early years of the Civil War, Walker went on to become the first black man to practice law in Gloucester and perhaps in all of Virginia. He was appointed by President William McKinley as the Commonwealth’s first black collector of customs in 1893. Perhaps most importantly, Walker advocated education and land owner-ship for blacks. Toward this end he was instru-mental in establishing both the Gloucester Training School, to provide secondary educa-tion to blacks, and the Gloucester Agricultural and Industrial School. Today an elementary school named for Walker sits on the site of the Gloucester Training School.
Another key figure in black history from Gloucester was Irene Morgan. Eleven years before Rosa Parks, Morgan also refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. Her case went all the way to the Supreme Court. With help from the NAACP and the representation of Thurgood Marshall and William Hastie, she won. Real change, however, would still take years.
The history of the region for much of the 20th century revolves around the daf-fodil. Brought to the New World by early settlers wanting garden flowers to provide a continuation of their lives back home, the daffodil found the climate and soil of the Middle Peninsula very agreeable. Eventually the flower spread from gardens, to yards, to open fields and roadsides.

In 1890, Eleanor Smith, living along the North River, saw the commercial value of the daffodil. She began shipping cut flowers via steamer to Baltimore up the Chesapeake Bay. Mrs. Smith had considerable success, and gradually she was emulated by her neighbors. One grower, Charles Heath, had been work-ing closely with importers of Dutch bulbs when, in 1926, an embargo was placed on all foreign-grown bulbs due to a worm infesta-tion. Heath’s bulbs saved the day when his importer came to him to meet their custom-ers’ needs. Heath’s son, George, worked to improve business strategies, farming methods and product quality, serving as an inspiration to other growers who did likewise.
During the Depression, the daffodil sold strongly as the “poor man’s rose,” and the income from daffodils became very important
to the region. Gloucester became known as the “Daffodil Capital of America,” and in 1940, Fox Movietone created a newsreel fea-turing local girls in Dutch costumes, posing in the fields with daffodils. Two years later an article in National Geographic magazine further solidified the region as the center of the American daffodil industry.
At one point 150 families grew daffodils, and more than 1,000 acres were planted in daffodils. All told, George Heath imported over 1,400 bulb varieties. Today the plant-ing area is a fraction of that, but profitable daffodil businesses are still centered here, operating mainly through mail order and the Internet. Since 1987, the annual Daffodil Festival has celebrated the arrival of spring in Gloucester County.
Our heritage is preserved in our buildings, festivals and attractions. We are just a stone’s throw from Colonial Williamsburg and his-toric Jamestown. Come to Gloucester and see for yourself: American history comes alive.

In Gloucester County you will find a community where living history meets progress, technol-
ogy and the future. Few places offer such proximity to navigable water, shady country lanes, open spaces and historic sites. Gloucester County has that small-town feeling, where peo-ple know their neighbors and folks
look out for one another. “Gloucester County,” says Rosie Bunting, a long-time resident, “still has a rural, small-town sense of community.”
Local parks, both rustic and activ-ities-oriented, are found throughout the county. North of Beaverdam Park, the county is largely rural and resi-dential. While we enjoy the charm
of small-town life, we also enjoy our proximity to conveniences and ame-nities found in more populous areas.
Eating out? There are many fast-food, family-style and upscale dining offerings. Gloucester County is also home to an emerging local theatre and music scene. The Courthouse Players are active in Gloucester, Mathews and

“Gloucester County is the eco-nomic engine for the Middle Peninsula region,” says Douglas Meredith, Gloucester’s economic development director. “Gloucester is home to a vibrant mix of public and private sec-tor employers that you would expect in any thriving community.”
Local government and education comprise the county’s largest segment of employers, including the Gloucester County School System, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Rappahannock Community College.
Health care is also a strong employ-ment sector, with Riverside Walter Reed Hospital and Sentara Health Systems providing both emergency/urgent outpatient care and physi-cian services. Riverside Walter Reed Hospital is a 71-bed inpatient facility and includes a wellness center as part of a total patient care complex.
National chain stores, smaller local shops and restaurants represent the retail employment market. Science and technology are growing sectors, and Industrial Resources Technology
(IRT), a Canon USA and Canon Virginia, Inc., joint venture company, continues to expand to meet new remanufacturing demands.
For those considering starting a business in Gloucester County, you’ll find much to welcome you, includ-ing a tax structure that is one of the lowest in Hampton Roads. The long-term business and industry growth plan is part of the county’s devel-opment district, which includes the Route 17 corridor, Main Street and Gloucester Point, as detailed in the

Comprehensive Plan. This allows for expansion in proximity to trans-portation, with minimal encroachment on residential areas.
Along Route 17, the Gloucester Business Park is a 70-acre park with infrastructure, including water, sewer and high-speed Internet access, providing sites that are ready for development. The park is home to a number of companies, including Sentara Gloucester Medical Associates and Urgent Care, Bay Design Group, Industrial Resource Technologies, and Coastal Bioanalysts. A new project has plans to build 60,000 square feet of office space over three phases.
“As communities grow from their residential base, job creation begins in the service and retail sectors,” explains Meredith. “If the community desires, a third employment sector, one providing more industrial jobs, begins to develop. In Gloucester County we are com-mitted to balanced economic development and are working with VIMS, William and Mary, Hampton University, and others to develop a changing landscape to incorporate a wide variety of employment opportunities.”
Approximately 9,000 members of the Gloucester County workforce are currently commuting to other areas to work each day. With antici-pated business and industry growth in the area, many of these workers would be delighted to stay closer to home. Education levels are high here too. While the number of residents with a bachelor’s degree is similar to state and national averages, the numbers of high school graduates, those with two-year college degrees, and those with gradu-ate degrees are much higher than both state and national averages. This means that Gloucester County has an educated, prepared workforce ready and waiting for the right opportunities. The area’s quality of life also makes a great recruiting inducement.
Industrial Resource Technology was the first company to locate in the Gloucester Business Park. The company’s core business model is based on Canon’s Clean Earth Campaign and its corporate philosophy of Kyosei. IRT reclaims reusable toner cartridge components from laser printers, copiers and facsimile machines. Their facility of more than 100,000 square feet began operations in 1996. In 2006, Industrial Resource Technology was acknowledged as an E3 facility by the

Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP). According to VEEP, “In 2005, IRT recycled over 9 million pounds of cardboard and 300,000 pounds of plastic bags. Waste toner and plastic from the reclaimed car-tridges is sent to a facility for energy recovery. In 2005, that amounted to over 9 million pounds of cartridges and almost 2 million pounds of toner that were not placed in a landfill.” IRT employs nearly 300 people.
Aside from science, technology and health care, Gloucester provides retail goods, ser-vices and conveniences for its residents and visitors. Lowe’s, Home Depot and Wal-Mart, as well as several national chain restaurants, are located here. Wal-Mart is the fourth-largest employer. Demonstrating the county’s work ethic and the degree to which people in this community care about each other, the Gloucester Lowe’s store was No. 1 in customer service for all Lowe’s stores nationwide in 2005. The company’s national representa-tives came to Gloucester, celebrated with the winners and handed out awards, includ-ing three brand-new automobiles. Customer service and community service go hand-in-hand. In 2006, Lowe’s employees, using the company’s home building and improvement

materials, contributed to the construction of two Habitat for Humanity homes.
The Courthouse Circle has been the hub of Gloucester County since the 1700s. Today you will still find beautiful examples of the regal ambience of Old Virginia in the historic buildings. Since 1971, Courthouse Circle has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Not only do the buildings have history, but the businesses do as well. Brent and Becky’s Bulbs is the third generation of the Heath daffodil business. Purchased from Brent Heath’s parents in 1972, the company has sustained itself through many changes. Today, combining Internet and catalog sales, wholesale business, ownership of a business in Holland, and operations and/or busi-ness alliances in various other parts of the world, this truly international concern sells to customers in every state and employs 30 to 40 people depending upon the sea-son. The award-winning business continues the quest of Charles Heath from the early 1900s to expand the assortment of daffodil bulb varieties, now accomplished primar-ily through crossbreeding as opposed to importing. Brent and Becky also contribute their knowledge and family history to the Daffodil Festival bus tours.
The Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce has more than 350 members, representing a full gamut of business, from small to large and from technical to retail. The Chamber of Commerce can provide visitors and potential new residents with all the information needed to make your move to Gloucester County.

Gloucester County is a great place to learn and grow. For preschoolers through retirees, there is something
for everyone.
Gloucester County Public SchoolsGloucester County Public Schools provides
our county’s comprehensive K–12 system. We have six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. All nine schools maintain full accreditation through the State Department of Education and continually surpass national and state benchmarks for student performance. Our school district is relatively small (in fall 2005 we had only 6,176 students), but our standards are high. In school year 2004–2005, our student-to-teacher ratio averaged 12-to-1 for elementary schools and 11-to-1 for secondary school. For the same year, Gloucester County Public Schools spent $8,313.46 per student.
Learning in grades K–8 prepares students for a wide range of programs available in high school and allows capable students to earn high school credits in middle school. The high school prepares students for con-tinued education and/or the world of work through various programs, including The Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School for Marine and Environmental Science, New Horizon’s Governor’s School for Science and Technology, 13 advanced-placement courses, dual-credit courses in partnership with Rappahannock Community College, varied career/techni-cal programs with industry certifications at Gloucester High School, and additional options at New Horizon’s Technical Center. Approximately $2 million is awarded annu-ally in scholarships to graduating seniors, who are accepted into some of the best post-secondary institutions.
There are also academic programs in musi-cal, performing and visual arts; Naval Junior ROTC; and many athletic and extracurricular activities from which students may choose. Superintendent of Schools Howard B. Kiser, Ed.D., remarks, “Gloucester County Public Schools puts children first, offers a rural

Head StartParent Child Development Corporation
(PCDC) is a private, nonprofit agency founded by a group of volunteers in 1971. The PCDC continues today as a grassroots, community-based organization providing early childhood education and family support services in the Middle Peninsula area. As the grantee agency for the Middle Peninsula Head Start Program, PCDC operates four Head Start Centers in Gloucester County — Bethel, Botetourt, Petsworth and T.C. Walker.
Head Start serves at-risk 3- and 4-year-old children and their families. The PCDC provides parenting skills workshops, family literacy projects and community-awareness activities on child and family-related issues throughout the service area.
Gloucester Montessori SchoolMontessori is the fastest-growing educa-
tional philosophy in the Western world. By preparing a child for a lifetime of learning, the Montessori method is designed to give
a child the best possible opportunity for success in all aspects of life. The Gloucester Montessori School (GMS) was founded in 1979 and, through the efforts of parents, was incorporated in 1989 so that it could continue the tradition of Montessori education on the Middle Peninsula. GMS cultivates the tools for success in the fast-changing 21st century: independent thinking, creativity, confidence,
self-discipline and, most importantly, a passion for learning.
At GMS, under the direction of a specially trained teacher, each child is encouraged to work at his or her own pace, using unique materials that are multi-sensory, sequential, self-correcting and even displayed
so as to appeal or “call” to the child. These manipulative materials introduce new con-cepts concretely, leading to the learning of abstract ideas. All aspects of the classroom are designed to support the learner. The environ-ment is both aesthetically pleasing and cor-rectly proportioned for the child, inspiring self-assurance and encouraging exploration.
Order is maintained within the classroom through the principle of freedom within limits, which is explained to students. Natural and logical consequences serve as effective con-trols for those who need boundaries. Children are never humiliated for their behavior, nor do they receive arbitrary punishments.
Children can enroll in the school as early as 2.5 years of age, and classes progress

through grade six. Students work in mixed age groups with older children, who rein-force their own learning by assisting younger children. Through this system, the children gain a sense of responsibility and valuable social skills.
Gloucester Montessori School welcomes children of all cultural, national and ethnic, religious, racial, and socio-economic back-grounds. Some scholarships are available.
Ware AcademyWare Academy is an accredited, indepen-
dent, co-educational day school for students in grades Pre-K (4) through eight. Originally founded in 1949 as the Gloucester County Day School, it started with 13 students in a building on Lawyer’s Row, in Historic Gloucester Village. Over the years the school has grown into a three-building campus with playing fields on almost 20 acres.
Ware Academy empowers each student to achieve academic excellence, emphasizing the development of mind, body and character. The school provides a nurturing environment that fosters academic and personal growth and promotes healthy self-esteem. The faculty encourages students to express themselves confidently, clearly and critically in all subject areas. With an ideal student-to-faculty ratio, teachers utilize a variety of proven learning experiences that emphasize both cooperation and competition while enhancing literacy and critical thinking. The academy strives for a familial atmosphere of friendliness, cooperation and social responsibility. Parental involvement is encouraged.

and selects its students without regard to race, color, religion, or national or ethnic origin. High moral and ethical principles, strong academic standards, and responsibil-ity for one’s self are equally important for students. Entrance to Ware Academy is based on the candidate’s academic level, aptitude and potential.
An important aspect of the Ware Academy education is instilling in its students a sense of responsibility not only for themselves, but also for those around them. By provid-ing leadership and character-building activi-ties, as well as athletic competition, Ware Academy ensures that each student receives instruction and modeling toward becoming a responsible citizen.

Chesapeake Marine Training InstituteChesapeake Marine Training Institute, Inc.,
(CMTI) provides U.S. Coast Guard-approved professional training for all levels of maritime licenses, documents and endorsements. The school, now in business for more than 15 years, was cited in the April 2002 Marine Log as being among the top 10 maritime training companies in the United States.
Students come from around the country and even the world to hone their maritime skills and advance toward the licensing they need for their career. Even pleasure boaters can get training to bolster their marine safety and competency. Training categories include deck/wheelhouse, radar/ARPA/ECDIS, unli-censed deck endorsements, STCW basic safety training, tankerman (barge), fishing vessel drill coordinator, FCC radio license prep and exams, engineer license preparation, Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED), and security training. There are nearly 70 different classes offered.
The training facility includes over 8,000 square feet of modern office and classroom spaces, with an additional 12,500 square feet of outdoor complex. CMTI’s instructors are all USCG-licensed, professional mariners, skilled in sharing their knowledge with oth-ers. They take pride in presenting professional seamanship skills and knowledge for mariners seeking their U.S. Coast Guard license or Merchant Mariner’s Document. CMTI support does not end in the classroom. Instructors provide personal tutoring when needed and offer direct and personal assistance through-out the training process.
Chesapeake Marine Training Institute, owned by a service-disabled veteran, is a small business concern and a General Services Administration (GSA) contract holder provid-ing courses and services, as well as training aids and devices, to its U.S. government cus-tomers. Provider by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The school is also approved for the education and training of veterans for certain courses.
Virginia Institute of Marine ScienceVirginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)
is among the largest marine research and edu-cation centers in the United States. Founded in 1940, VIMS is mandated by the Code of Virginia to provide research, education and advisory services in marine science to the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond. The primary VIMS campus is located in Gloucester Point, where the York River meets Chesapeake Bay.
VIMS research concentrates principally on coastal and estuarine systems, and the insti-tute is recognized worldwide for its expertise in these areas. Faculty expertise includes study of aquatic disease; biological, chemical and physical oceanography; computational modeling; genetics; immunology; toxicology; and wetlands science. Organizationally, VIMS research spans four academic departments and several major research units, including the Aquatic Breeding Center (ABC), the Center for
Coastal Resources Management (CCRM), the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR), and the Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program (MAP). Since complex environmental issues rarely parallel adminis-trative divisions, VIMS emphasizes interdisci-plinary research.
The College of William and Mary’s School of Marine Science (SMS) is the graduate edu-cation component of VIMS. Of the more than 100 graduate students, about half are working on a master’s and half on doctoral degrees. VIMS has more than 500 faculty, staff and students, with international students making up 12 percent of the student body.
The VIMS community also works to pro-vide unbiased scientific information to help policymakers, industry and citizens effectively understand and manage marine resources. Advisory service provides a major avenue for conveying scientific and technical information to clients and the general public.
In addition to its graduate school, VIMS plays an important role in marine science education for the larger community, work-ing closely with schools, businesses and
governmental agencies to inform on a wide range of marine-related programs and activi-ties. The Bridge, developed and maintained by Sea Grant marine education specialists, is a Web-based clearinghouse of the best online resources for marine science education.

Walter Reed HospitalAt first glance, Gloucester,
Virginia, is a burgeoning rural com-munity with a wealth of home-town charm and appeal. Tucked away between Newport News and Richmond, Virginia, Gloucester is a small town known for its rich his-tory, scenic woodland and abundance of celebrated rivers. Natural majesty aside, Gloucester is also a friendly, safe area to settle down or raise a family. In addition to scenic beauty, Gloucester offers notable schools, a
rich historical culture and a world-class health care system.
Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, located in the heart of town, serves Gloucester and the surrounding areas of the Middle Peninsula. Since its inception the legacy of Walter Reed Hospital has been its dedication to providing the best health care imagin-able by health care professionals who are committed to putting the patient first. Walter Reed Hospital delivers big-city technology in a small-town, personal atmosphere for members of
the Gloucester community, making long trips to metropolitan areas no longer necessary or, in many cases, very limited. Providing state-of-the-art facilities, techniques and services to this community is the cornerstone of Walter Reed’s philosophy. Being part of Riverside Health System, citi-zens have access to one of the region’s most comprehensive systems that can meet your needs, from acute care, requiring emergency manage-ment or hospitalization, to outpatient diagnostics or surgery, rehabilitation,

behavioral health, nursing home and assisted living, retirement living, or home-care services. There is no need to travel when everything from a scraped knee to cancer can be treated at one of Walter Reed Hospital’s fully accredited facilities. The vast majority of the doctors, nurses, clinicians and support staff at Walter Reed also live in the com-munity. That’s why for the last 30 years, Walter Reed has been known for providing “Amazing Care To Our Neighbors and Friends,” because we are literally taking care of our family, friends and neighbors. The citizens of Gloucester know that Walter Reed is the place where you receive expert medical care by caring and compassionate members of the community. It’s like coming home to be cared for by family.
Walter Reed is anything but average. Instead of being founded by a major corporation, it was instead established by citizens. During the early 1970s, before the hospital was created, it was common for patients to have to drive long distances for medical treatment. Tired of seeing the elderly and unwell friends and family make the long, arduous trip to other hospitals, citizens decided to band together and petition for a community hospital close to home. At the time, Riverside Hospital, located in Newport News, worked with the citi-zens of Gloucester to build the area’s first community hospital. From the very beginning, Walter Reed Hospital, through its association with what is now known as Riverside Health System, has been the quintes-sential community hospital. After 30 years of providing the Gloucester community with exceptional service and medical care, it maintains its original goal and attitude. After all these years, Water Reed Hospital remains the community’s hospital in every since of the word.
However, Walter Reed has changed a lot since 1977, when it first opened its doors offering a wide array of health care services that included both inpatient and outpatient services. As advances in
HealtH.care

medicine were made, Walter Reed continued to evolve, adapt and embrace new medical innovations. Today, Walter Reed Hospital is known for using state-of-the-art technology to prevent, diagnose and treat illness. Exemplary examples of providing the most advanced form of technology are readily seen with the Open Bore MRI, installed in 2006, which provides physicians with the most sophisticated images available, and the Linear Accelerator, which provides the most advanced radiation treatment available to cancer patients. In addition, Walter Reed’s board-certified surgeons utilize modern equipment and minimally invasive techniques to assure that the community has the best surgical services available right here at home.
When emergency medical needs arise, Walter Reed has an Emergency Department available 24 hours a day that is easily acces-sible from Route 17. Friendly and knowledgeable doctors and nurses work diligently, around the clock, to keep the Walter Reed Emergency Department running smoothly and efficiently. There is no emergency too big or small for this caring team of professionals. The Walter Reed emergency staff is highly trained to care for everything from a minor cold to severe trauma. In the event that a patient requires treatment that Walter Reed cannot provide, LifeEvac III, an air ambulance that responds within eight to 10 minutes, will transport the patient to a surrounding hospital. In an emergency situation, time is critical. By teaming up with LifeEvac III, Walter Reed is able to provide the com-munity with rapid services that save lives.
Walter Reed Hospital continued its commitment to meeting the needs of Gloucester’s citizens by creating the Riverside Middle Peninsula Cancer Center, which opened on the hospital campus in 2004. This state-of-the-art facility offers both radiation and chemother-apy in one location for the convenience of cancer patients. The center’s

design supports collaboration and coordina-tion among radiation and medical oncologists when patients require both forms of cancer treatment. At the Riverside Middle Peninsula Cancer Center, the caring, compassionate staff treat cancer using equipment and protocols that parallel what is available at large academic institutions, but in a comfortable and nurtur-ing environment right here at home.
In addition to its commitment to provid-ing cutting-edge care for the diagnosis and treatment of injury, illness and disease, Water Reed Hospital operates a Wellness and Fitness
Center, located on the main campus, to pro-mote the health and well-being of its citizens. Riverside pioneered the wellness movement over 20 years ago. The center successfully blends traditional fitness with preventive care, offering health assessments and health improvement classes and on-site rehabilita-tion for cardiac and physical therapy patients.
This facility is a popular social destination for the growing suburban Middle Peninsula community and is enjoyed by the employees of nearby businesses. Members of all ages and health levels successfully mix seven days a week, enjoying the many facility amenities, which include a variety of cardiovascular and strength-training systems; group exercise

classes; basketball, tennis and racquetball courts; and a generous-size pool, as well as sauna and whirlpool. The Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center is a first-class facility that provides the Gloucester community with everything it needs to stay fit and healthy.
Walter Reed has also embraced systems and processes that are unprecedented within the medical community. In 2006, the hos-pital introduced a “Hospitalist Program” to enhance care of patients requiring a stay in the hospital. The “Hospitalist Program” is run by physicians called “Hospitalists,” Internal Medicine Physicians who are responsible for overseeing and coordinating the entire team of health care professionals to assure each patient’s needs are met. At Walter Reed, doctors meet daily with each other and the health care team to discuss, in detail, the best treatment options for a patient. This model of medical management, where the physician is readily available to review prog-
ress, treat problems, and communicate with the patient and family, promotes quicker healing. By combining the knowledge of the entire team, the patient can be assured that they will receive the best service and treatment by a caring and compassionate staff that is committed to putting them first.
Riverside Walter Reed Hospital has invested millions of dollars in equipment, emergency services, state-of-the-art imaging technology, and world-class doctors and nurses. In the past 30 years, Walter Reed has achieved many awards and been given prestigious sanctions, like the Joint Commission’s “Gold Seal of Approval,” which recognizes the high-

est levels of care precision, efficiency and professionalism. However, it is not only high-quality services or awards that make Walter Reed such a wonderful hospital. It’s the people. The vast majority of people who work at Walter Reed Hospital also live in the community. The Walter Reed staff cares, not only for patients, but also for friends and family. It’s this sense of community pride that sets Walter Reed apart from most hospitals. Walter Reed is a family. The family is extended to encompass everyone from the doctors to the maintenance workers, all having a deep desire to provide exceptional care and service to the community. For 30 years, Walter Reed has been providing “Amazing Healthcare by Amazing People” to their friends and neighbors and will continue with the same commitment well into the future.

immerse themselves in the history of America. “History is the draw,” says Jenny Graziano of the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. Visitors come to explore our his-torical sites, to see the architecture of
Colonial and 19th-century America, and to experience history coming alive in Gloucester’s numerous cul-tural events. Twenty-six sites within the county are recognized and listed on the National Historic Register.
Gloucester County’s location makes exploring the beauty and history of the surrounding areas,
including Yorktown, Williamsburg and Jamestown, convenient. Perhaps you’d like to try golfing at the nearby Piankatank River Golf Course, book a room at one of our historic bed and breakfasts, or savor a delicious meal at one of our charming restaurants. You’ll discover that a vacation can be full of events and adventures and still

soothe the soul. That’s the unique appeal of Gloucester County.
If history is the draw, then water is the most obvious feature. Water defines almost every boundary of the county, and there are many ways to enjoy it. Fourteen public land-ings provide access for launching watercraft of different sizes. Call the Parks, Recreation and Tourism office at 804-693-2355 to find out details. You may prefer bird watching from your canoe or kayak, exploring the marsh areas along the edges of the rivers. At
Gloucester Point, you will find power boat rentals for bay fishing or exploring.
There is no end of things to do in Gloucester County. The Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail includes nine locations within the county. The Gloucester Loop Trail, a part of the Coastal Trail, provides an opportunity to view water-fowl, shorebirds and other wildlife.
At 1,340 acres, Beaverdam Park is Gloucester County’s largest. It is centrally located in the county, just north of Gloucester Courthouse, and surrounds the 635-acre
Beaverdam Lake. The Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department offers many activities at Beaverdam, including night hiking and night canoeing, for a different kind of lake experience. Of course, daytime activities are plentiful, too. You can fish, hike, canoe, enjoy a nature walk or bring your horse to explore horseback trails. Beaverdam is ranked fourth in the state of Virginia for citation bass fishing.

The Beach House, open seasonally, has a concession stand, restrooms and outdoor shower and is handicapped-accessible. Fishermen can try their luck on the fishing pier.
Tyndall’s Point Park is a historic spot celebrating mariner and mapmaker Robert Tyndall. In 1608 Tyndall came to Virginia with Captain Christopher Newport. The park features earthworks remaining from the Revolutionary and Civil wars and interpretive walkways.
Local parks are also a great enhancement to the lifestyle in our county. Many include

You will also find a full-sized driving range, a chipping and putting green, a pro shop, and a club-house with a full-service restaurant.

Festivals and EventsDaffodil Festival
A uniquely Gloucester County tra-dition for more than 20 years, the Daffodil Festival is a celebration of spring and the enterprising ladies
who made daffodils a cottage indus-try. Sometime around 1890, Eleanor Linthicum Smith of Toddsbury got the idea to sell daffodils as an inex-pensive alternative to roses. She paid local children to harvest the bulbs and sent them via steamship to market in Baltimore. Soon other ladies followed her lead to earn extra money for their families. At one time, the local coun-tryside would be carpeted in acres and acres of yellow daffodils. Even today, people delight in the many “wild” daffodils that bloom here.
For two days each spring, Glou-cester County celebrates the daffodil

with a parade through downtown, all decked out in yellow. Artisans and craftspeople occupy booths around the Court Circle and beyond. Music, entertainment, food, an antique car show, the Annual Daffodil Show and the crowning of the Daffodil Queen round out the events.
Bus tours, available only during the festival, explore the beautiful daf-fodil gardens of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs. The tour program, created by Brent and Becky Heath and presented by Gloucester Master Gardeners, lets you see “works in progress”; dispenses lots of flower-growing knowledge, including great ideas for combination plantings; and tells the history of the daffodil industry here in Gloucester. Also included is a visit to the Bulb Shoppe, with the living catalog.
In association with the festival, the Gloucester Garden Club sponsors
an accredited Daffodil Society Flower Show that has now been held for over 50 years. Growers come from far and wide to enter their prize blooms. Even young people get involved through special junior classes and awards.
Other EventsGuinea Jubilee had its humble
beginning as a celebration to preserve the history and values of the unique watermen’s community we know as Guinea. It is held the last full weekend in September. In nearly 30 years the Guinea Jubilee has grown to include a parade, food, live entertainment, a 5K walk/run, a “Pedal the Loop” bicycle ride, arts and crafts booths, children’s activities, and the Oyster Tonging and Crabpot Pulling contests.
Seafood festivals: In a nod to our maritime heritage, Gloucester County
hosts a variety of festivals with a water theme.
Be sure to look for the big inflat-able crab! The Annual Crab Race, hosted by River’s Inn Restaurant, pro-vides great family fun, and proceeds benefit the Gloucester High School Culinary Arts Department. Bring your own crab or “rent” one at the event. May the best crab win! Don’t forget to stop at The Crab Deck for the Triple Crab Special.
Concerts on the Green is a series of free concerts on the historic Courthouse Circle. Musicians of all styles and genres perform throughout the summer. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy the music.

Historic Churches
Abingdon Episcopal ChurchAbingdon Episcopal Church is a rare
example of a cruciform — or Latin Cross — Colonial church. It was completed in 1755 and was the largest of only eight churches in Colonial Virginia and the third-largest in all the colonies. Abingdon has brick walls over 2 feet thick, laid in Flemish-bond, a unique three-tiered pulpit, and a magnificent pipe organ. The adjacent cemetery contains grave-stones dating from the mid-1600s.The church underwent a major restoration in 1986.
Abingdon welcomes the community to its series of Arts at Abingdon concerts, held throughout the summer.

Bethel Baptist ChurchBethel Baptist Church was founded in 1867
by 16 devout Christians as the Old Sassafras Stage Church to serve a “prayer meeting” congregation who had been worshiping in secret under bush arbors with crude seats. After the abolition of slavery, Dr. J. Catlett Stubbs, a former slave owner, donated an acre of land so that they would have a place of their own to hold services. The first building included an altar railing, pulpit and gallery, but it was quickly outgrown when five prayer meeting communities consolidated into one. The original building was then expanded and improved, and the church’s name was change to Bethel Baptist Church.
In 1889, to accommodate an ever-increas-ing congregation, the present sanctuary was built, mostly through volunteer efforts. Carpenter George Leigh and bricklayer/plas-terer Thomas Calhoun Walker, Sr., father of

T.C. Walker, who is buried in the church’s cemetery, served as the chairmen of the build-ing committee.
Fourteen pastors have led Bethel during its history. At one point the membership swelled to 950, and at around that time five daughter churches were established in New Mount Zion, Mt. Gilead, Smithfield, Shepherdsville and Morning Glory, all located in Gloucester, with the exception of Mt. Gilead in Williamsburg.
Bethel Baptist Church was officially rec-ognized as a historic landmark in 1997 and today has its own church historian.

Ware Episcopal ChurchAn early 17th-century structure, Ware
Episcopal Church is an excellent example of the early Colonial Virginia churches built in the form of a rectangle. Inside, visitors can enjoy its beautiful woodwork and see its origi-nal three entrances. They have remained unal-tered through the years, providing us with very early examples of the brick doorways so typical of Colonial Virginia’s ecclesiastical architecture.
The church is surrounded by a Colonial brick wall and an interesting graveyard with beautiful plantings. During its long history, Ware Episcopal Church served as encamp-ments for federal and Confederate soldiers.

church was built in 1894. The architec-ture of the building is 19th-century Gothic Revival style, with vernacular detailing. The marvelous interior is the craftsmanship of a former slave, Frank Braxton, who, along with other early congregants, is buried in the old cemetery.
The church was officially established in 1896 and is one of the oldest independent African-American congregations in Gloucester County. Zion Poplars, and indeed most inde-pendent black churches founded during the Reconstruction era, was a multi-purpose com-munity center as well as a church. Today’s congregants, many of whom are descended from the church’s founders, continue to treat the church as the center of spiritual, social and community life. Zion Poplars Baptist Church is listed on the Virginia and National Historic Landmarks registers.
