On August 22, UAMS Program Coordinators

(PCs) from 40 GME programs gathered to

focus on Team Building and Wellness. During

the morning session, PCs worked in groups to

identify their strengths and weakness, in order

to find ways to support each other in the vari-

ous tasks that they must accomplish through-

out the year. The afternoon session focused

on wellness and included tips for stress reduc-

tion and meditation. The PC Organization

would like to thank the GME and Housestaff

Offices for their support of this annual profes-

sional development event.

Program Coordinators’ Professional Development Day 2018

Coordinators worked in groups to identify their

knowledge, skills and abilities, which provided

the group with a network of individuals that can

serve as a resources for the important and var-

ied tasks of a program coordinator.

UAMS Organizational Development’s morning session demonstrated the importance of team-

work by having Program Coordinators work together to lift and lower a tarp so a tennis ball rolled

to each number in sequence. This fun activity proved that teams get stronger as they learn les-

sons from each other and even from another team!

EAP’s afternoon session had coordinators identify ways to

decrease their stress and look for motivation in their work.

ACGME

Updates

NEW FOCAL QUESTIONS

FOR THE 10-YEAR

ACCREDITATION SITE VISIT

Starting in 2018, Accreditation

Field Representatives ask

questions in four focal areas

during the 10-Year Accredita-

tion Site Visit: 1) clinical expe-

riences, didactics, and as-

sessments that collectively

promote readiness for unsu-

pervised practice (or the next

phase of residents’ educa-

tion); 2) a learning environ-

ment where residents find

meaning in work and have

input into changes in their

environment; 3) faculty devel-

opment focused on faculty

members’ roles in resident/

fellow education; and 4) pro-

gram-level priorities for resi-

dent/fellow and faculty mem-

ber well-being. Accreditation

Field Representatives offer

formative feedback in these

areas, and collect data on

patterns and information on

notable practices for dissemi-

nation. (2017-18 ACGME

Annual Report)

CLER Self-Assessment:

What is your knowledge of patient safety events?

During the recent CLER site visit, site visitors noted that most healthcare professionals lacked clarity and awareness of the range of reportable patient safety events including what defines a near miss/close call. They also noted that not many people understand root cause analysis and its uses.

This article is a quick way to do a self-assessment of your knowledge of both patient safety event types and some basic understanding of root cause analysis.

First, start with the crossword puzzle, to check your current knowledge:

Second, enter your answers at: https://crosswordhobby-ist.com/539388 to de-termine your current knowledge.

Submit your crossword puzzle answers to [email protected]

Program Directors can use the puzzle as a conversation starter with their residents and fellows for their own training in patient safety, but CLER requires faculty to ex-amine patient safety issues regularly with residents and fellows.

Here are some tips for PDs:

1. Develop a better than expert knowledge of patient safety for yourself.

2. Engage residents and fellows in regular training sessions on patient safety issues.

3. Actively seek out patient safety reporting data and present it to your residents and fellows.

4. Hold didactic sessions in which residents and fellows are engaged in recalling the information rather than presenting static information.

5. Develop evaluation methods that meet the needs of your depart-ment.

Most of all make sure you state your objectives clearly, encourage recall without the information on a regular basis, present the information again, assess performance, provide feedback, and repeat until deficits appear to be diminished. Also, you can always contact Tim Atkinson, Ed.D. in GME and he will gladly hold a training session for your department!
