If you’re not feeling the best and aren’t sure why, it may be time to

follow your gut feeling. Narelle Muller explains.

Vital to your wellbeing, gut care should be at the forefront of your health regime, yet sadly it is often overlooked until it bellows for attention. And the reality is that when it comes to general wellbeing, the gut shoulders a large share of responsibility. For one, it plays a huge role in keeping our immune system strong and fi ghting the good fi ght against illness and infection.

Let’s take a closer look at your gutIt’s estimated your body consists of 100 trillion cells and 10 times as many

microorganisms live inside your intestines. When you are born you contain a unique community of gut bacteria which plays an important role in digestion, bowel function and your overall health. The foods you eat and medicines you take affect the balance of this bacteria, some of which is helpful and some of which isn’t.

While the human gut and most of the good and not-so-good bacteria usually chug along quite happily together, an

imbalance caused by a loss of good bacteria (perhaps because of antibiotic use) or infl ux of bad, can mean trouble. By simply eating too much or the wrong types of food, your digestive processes can be disrupted. Gut problems can range from mild discomfort, indigestion, bloating, fl atulence and refl ux, to diarrhoea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The role of digestionDigestion begins when you eat food to access nutrients so you can absorb and employ them for a multitude of vital bodily functions. The other important role in digestion is the orchestration of the body’s waste depot, essentially working out what’s needed and what is not. The ‘not’ pile gets expelled from the body, while the stuff in the ‘useful’ basket is put to work.

your guide to ahealthy gut

How to have ahappy gut

Build immunityIt is estimated up to 80 per cent

of our immune cells are in our gut. This makes the gut the single most

important system for fi ghting off infection and illness.

Consume live yoghurt, fermented milk drinksor a probiotic formulaon a daily basis.

Eat prebiotic foods such as soya beans, raw oats, garlic, leeks and onions to encourage the growth and activity of probiotic bacteria.

Drink plenty of water.

Eat a varied diet rich in fresh produce.

Try not to eat late at night.

Avoid eating on the run.

Exercise often.

Chew food well.

What causes digestion to go wrongWhile it would be nice if everything ran according to plan, you often thwart the grand scheme by lifestyle infl uences such as unsuitable diet, taking medications, not staying well hydrated and allowing too much stress into your life. Your emotional health plays a crucial part in gut function as your gut and brain work in tandem, constantly relaying messages back and forth.

As much as 80 to 95 per cent of your body’s serotonin “happiness hormone” is in your gastrointestinal tract, where it helps control intestinal movement. Serotonin infl uences mood, sleep, muscle contraction and helps to regulate pain,so it’s easy to understand the brain-gut connection.

Stress can also affect the secretion of enzymes, depleting them to a point where digestion malfunctions.

Enzymes are essential fordigestion to occurLipases break down fats; proteases break down proteins; lactase breaks lactose (a sugar found in milk); carbohydrases including cellulase and amylase break down starches, sugars and fi bres found in fruit, vegetables and grains.

Without these enzymes your body could not harvest the nutrients you need, yet enzymes can be destroyed by heat, which is often used in food processing methods and when you cook.

Microbial sourced digestive enzymes can, however, be taken in supplement form and there is even a blend available to help people experiencing intolerance to dairy products. It is believed lactose intolerance is only a part of the problem with dairy intolerance and a blend of enzymes specifi cally designed to help with digestion of the main components found in dairy products may assist.

When you begin to understand the massive implications of good gut health, a maintenance program begins to make sense. So if you continue to indulge in your cappuccinos, lattes or ice cream when

you know it adds to your mucus congestion, snoring etc, then taking an enzyme supplement at the same time as you consume dairy products, is a sensible option.

Some other proven ways to sustain a healthy gut include the regular consumption of probiotics, along with Manuka honey and peppermint tea.

Probiotics promote good gut fl ora, the friendly bacteria found in the intestines which not only assist with digestion and fend off harmful bacteria, but help to build immunity. Yoghurt and cultured milk products contain probiotics, as do foods such as miso, tempeh, sauerkraut, some juices and soy beverages. Probiotic supplements (usually capsules or powders containing live bacteria, such as lactobacillus and bifi dobacterium) are an easy option to help promote good bacterial levels. For IBS sufferers, a strain of Lactobacillus plantarum (Lp299v), has been extensively researched and is widely used in Europe for the management of the condition.

Manuka honey: With its strong

antibiotic properties, Manuka honey is believed to help

digestion. The presence of this sweet treat in the gut has been seen to not only kill disease causing bacteria, but improve the immune system by restoring the balance of probiotics in the gut. Manuka honey taken half an hour before meals, along with a reduction in animal protein intake and a boost in fi bre-rich foods could bring signifi cant relief from disorders including irritable bowel syndrome.

Peppermint tea: For centuries peppermint tea has been enjoyed for its refreshing fl avour, as well as medicinal benefi ts. The active ingredient in peppermint, menthol, acts as an anti-spasmodic, which is one of the reasons it helps to relieve stomach upsets. A simple and effective remedy for relief of digestive discomfort and improving bowel function, peppermint tea’s relaxing effect on the internal muscles of the gut may also help with abdominal pain, bloating and fl atulence. Narelle Muller is a journalist and health writer of 20 years’ experience.

how to boost yourenergy levels

Fatigue affects everyone, not just the sick and elderly. Healthy adults, even supremely fi t athletes, suffer from fatigue, and the Newcastle professors never get tired of pursuing the subject! They have spent many years researching individuals with sub-optimal health and analysing urine amino acid levels. Amino acids are building blocks of proteins, the structural polymers of your body – the messengers, enzymes and transporters – if there is a shortage, and it continues, ill health will ensue.

The professors discovered that in individuals of sub-optimal health there was a chronic catabolic (breakdown) state present as compared to the healthy controls, who were in an anabolic state. Your body swings into the catabolic state to fi ght infection, however if the cause of the catabolism is not cleared up, the body eventually runs out of essential nutrients especially amino acids. So amino acid supplementation allows the defensive proteins to be produced and health,

especially energy levels, to be improved.Their research also lead to a new

understanding that fatigue, mental fogginess, muscle pain, gut disturbance, sleep disturbance, food intolerance, headaches and night sweats are symptoms of so many conditions because they are all related to this catabolic state.

Chronic fatigue A 1994 study on the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome with specifi c amino acid supplementation at the MetaMetrix Medical Research Laboratory in Georgia, USA, showed dramatic results in improving energy levels. In fact, 75 per cent of the 20 participants who completed the trial experienced a 50 to 100 per cent improvement, while a further 15 per cent reported a 25 to 50 per cent rise in energy levels. Of the subjects reporting the biggest response, energy levels were reported to increase substantially within two weeks.

Amino acid benefi ts“So while amino acids might not give you the quick jolt of caffeine, the results are far more long lasting and you’re actually improving your body’s health and vitality instead of offering it a Band-aid solution,” explains Professor Roberts. “Not only do amino acids offer an energy boost, they also appear to improve muscle recovery and boost immune health. The most commonly reported improvement in the study was a greatly enhanced ability to concentrate. You not only experience a steadier more reliable stream of energy but you will fi nd you are less irritable and your sleeping patterns improve.”

Further research at other universities supports the value of amino acid supplementation for athletes in training (reducing muscle soreness, increasing effi ciency) and for the ageing population.

and it is fast growing in popularity. Drawing on years of research, it also offers a patented delivery system that delivers amino acids straight into the bloodstream.

Amino acid therapyAmino acids are circulating at constant levels in your blood and are being delivered to every cell in your body. Whenever a cell wants to build a protein, it takes the amino acid molecule from the blood. Imagine a sushi train in a Japanese restaurant where the dishes circulate round and round, and as the people take dishes off the train, the chef restocks the train with more dishes. In a similar way, amino acids in the blood have to be restocked. If you digest protein from food such as meat, then the amino acids get restocked in your blood. Sometimes, however, stress hormones resulting from chronic infection or competitive sports, can prevent digestion. When protein is not digested, the only way to restock amino acids in the blood is to break down muscle protein, which causes muscle wasting. By taking amino acid supplements, you immediately restock the blood with amino acids, without breaking down muscle protein.

Getting enough calcium each day keeps your

bones, teeth and muscles strong. If you’re not getting enough from your food you may need a supplement. Naturopath Ingrid Gilmour explains why you might need calcium and what to look for when navigating the plethora of calcium supplements available.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body. It makes up 1.5-2 per cent of the total body weight and the bones contain about 99 per cent of this. Not only does calcium play a major role in building and maintaining bones and teeth, calcium is also important in balancing pH and is involved in much of your body’s enzyme activity. The contraction of muscles, release of neurotransmitters, regulation of heart beat and the clotting of blood all depend on calcium.

Calcium drainersCaffeine, alcohol, phosphates (found in fi zzy drinks), high protein diets, sodium (table salt), aluminium containing antacids and sugar can all increase the excretion (loss) of calcium from your body. In all

these scenarios it is mainly due to calcium acting as a buffer to the acid produced from these foods, for example drinking a glass of cola with a pH of 2.5, same as vinegar, the body needs to neutralise the acid in the stomach before it does damage further down in the intestines. This also occurs in high protein diets where there is a lack of vegetables and fruits to bring balance.

Calcium is the major mineral used if a meal is excessively acidic. However if there is not enough calcium being ingested, your body will mobilise it from your bones.

Calcium sourcesYour body doesn’t produce calcium, so you must consume it in your diet. Calcium does not only come from dairy products

Julie’s storyJulie Midson York, president of the Bald & Beautiful Foundation experienced fi rst-hand the benefi ts of amino acid supplementation and the new lease on life it can give. A long period of ill-health including osteoarthritis, Ménière’s disease, chronic sinusitis, spinal, shoulder and elbow surgeries, depression and skin cancer, had taken their toll on Julie’s immune system and, with it, her quality of life. Her compromised upper-respiratory system meant that Julie was constantly battling colds and infl uenza. “I just kept getting sick again and again,” said Julie, who put it down to the impact stress and fatigue were having on her immune system.

When Julie found out she had to go back into hospital for painful shoulder surgery, she decided to start taking an amino acid supplement (Fatigue reviva) a week before her operation. The impact was profound. “Usually I would pick up any cold doing the rounds, break out in cold sores and experience a lot of arthritic pain. Just days after surgery, I was up and about, pounding the corridors of the hospital doing up to two kilometres of walking a day. When people see me they are so surprised at how well I am looking.” Julie is now discovering the everyday benefi ts of amino acid supplementation with just a single dose a day.The busy mother and grandmother has since been exposed to respiratory tract infections through her close family, but amazingly not been sick. “That’s extraordinary for me. When I go down I get really, really sick. I need double doses of antibiotics and it takes me a month to get over it. Amino acid supplementation is the only thing I’ve done differently” said Julie.

1. Check it does not contain the hard to absorb calcium carbonate but a mix of calcium such as calcium citrate and calcium hydroxyapatite.

2. Contains magnesium, essential for the absorption and assimilation of calcium into the bones. Sixty four per cent of total body magnesium is found in the bones, studies have shown that women with osteoporosis have signifi cantly lower levels of magnesium.

3. Contains vitamin D which is essential for the absorption and assimilation of calcium into the bones.

4. Contains lysine which increases calcium uptake from stomach lining and stimulates osteoblasts (bone builders).

5. Includes boron to increase the bone building function of oestrogen. Boron can decrease body calcium loss by up to 50 per cent, it is essential for converting vitamin D into its active form whereby it activates bone building components. Interestingly, a defi ciency in boron inhibits the absorption of calcium.

6. Includes silica in plant form such as horsetail or as a mineral. In several studies silica was found to enhance the health and growth of bones.

Also consider the following when taking a calcium supplementation for bone health:

Remember once you choose a good calcium make sure you take it

at night as this is the best time for calcium to be absorbed and it also helps you to achieve a good calm night’s sleep, as calcium has the ability to calm your nervous system.

Also one of the best ways to stimulate bone building is weight bearing exercise such as walking. When you walk the natural jarring motion stimulates the living bone tissue to build strength.

If you take both iron and calcium supplements, do not take them at the same time. This is because calcium affects your body’s ability to absorb iron.

when choosing a good quality calcium formula

as is often thought but also foods such as soy, nuts, seeds (especially sesame seeds), sardines, tinned salmon with edible soft bones, legumes, whole grains and vegetables (broccoli and kale) all contain high doses of calcium. But often we need a little extra help from a supplement and this is where the confusion comes in.

Not all supplements are equal Calcium carbonate is the most common form of calcium sold and is one of the hardest for the body to absorb; it can have an absorption rate as low as four per cent in those with low stomach acid, whereas other forms of calcium such as calcium citrate, calcium hydroxyapatite, calcium lactate, calcium gluconate have absorption of about 45 per cent in similar circumstances.

Please note that low stomach acid is used here as a worst case scenario. You will fi nd drugs like Losec and Somac contribute to this situation as they lower stomach acid.

Traditionally dolomite powder was used as a natural source of calcium, but the calcium is in the hard-to-absorb calcium carbonate (chalk) form and it may contain lead.

It is also important not to take calcium in isolation, as without its cofactors the calcium will not be deposited correctly into the bone matrix.

Antibiotics and probioticsQ: I have recently been on a course of antibiotics and read somewhere that I should now consume a tub of yoghurt on a daily basis. Why? Mrs M, NSW

A: The reason this was suggested is because many people believe this will replenish your stores of good bacteria in your gut which have been depleted by the antibiotics. In some people this destruction of good bacteria may lead to diarrhoea, nausea, wind or other intestinal disturbances. Clinical trials show that signifi cant reduction in the occurrence of intestinal disturbances can be achieved through the use of probiotics. However in most instances a tub of yoghurt will not contain anywhere near the therapeutic dose of the probiotics you require to keep digestive disturbances at bay. So in most instances a supplement of probiotics may be more useful than the tub of yoghurt.

MSM and arthritisQ: Having suffered for years with osteoarthritis I have just discovered amazing relief with a glucosamine, MSM combination – but am wondering what the MSM does?Mr R, VIC

A: Great to hear you have had success! MSM stands for methyl sulfonyl methane, and provides a natural bioavailable source of organic sulphur. Sulphur is an essential mineral present in your body which is needed for the formation of connective tissue and for maintaining joint lubrication and mobility. It is an important component of keratin – a substance found in fi ngernails and joints. So don’t be surprised if your fi ngernails also improve while you are supplementing with MSM. The combination of glucosamine and MSM are effective for relieving arthritic pain.Elizabeth French is a qualifi ed natural therapist and is based in New South Wales.

H E A LT H REPORT

Without doubt the presence of the World Wide Web has changed our lives in many ways. In the past if you needed a diagnosis or a chat about your health needs, you would take a visit to a health practitioner and perhaps have blood tests, x-rays and other forms of diagnostic testing to answers your queries. Today however, you can jump on the internet anywhere, anytime and self-diagnose. For some this might mean you become fearful you have

a major health condition when in reality the problem is minor or on the fl ip side, you may dismiss a health issue when in reality you should seek immediate medical attention.

The ‘information explosion’ has produced many great sources of health advice at our fi ngertips. At the same time we do need to recognise that there is also a load of poorly researched information too! The trick, is knowing the difference.

Is the information presented from a research article or a medical journal or, is it an independent information piece from a reputable expert? University sites, medical journals and government health websites are considered the most reliable. Remember though that a medically trained and qualifi ed practitioner will give you a more accurate diagnosis with relevant treatment programs, than you are likely to fi nd on the internet. The web

doesn’t know your medical history, your family’s medical history or your current circumstances – all of which are likely to be relevant and should be taken into account.

Most often the result of an internet search on the symptom diagnostic tool will indicate several possible illnesses, for example stomach cramps may be something as simple as indigestion after a rich heavy spicy meal or something more serious, a sign you are having a heart attack. You may interpret symptoms of pins and needles as indicating multiple sclerosis when in fact it may indicate a simple vitamin defi ciency. Unfortunately the list of possible misdiagnoses is extensive, so it’s important to use the information you fi nd on the internet sensibly and in consultation with your healthcare professional.

health information, some experts are warning of dire consequences of self-diagnosis. Anastasia Zafi ropoulos investigates.

you will see why talking to a practitioner rather than clicking a keyboard is going to give you a more rounded and comprehensive diagnosis. Whatever your health issue is, most practitioners will also want to talk to you about enriching your life with appropriate dietary changes, an exercise regime and/or supplements. It is important to be totally open and honest with your doctor, letting them know all of your symptoms and medications you are currently taking, including supplements, to allow your doctor to effectively and accurately undertake a diagnosis.

So while doctor internet is basically free, easy to access and essentially immediate, remember that it is always good to make a doctor’s appointment to confi rm or otherwise, the information you may have uncovered online. If counting sheep and fl uffi ng up your pillow ad nauseum is not working for you, and you are one of many Australians struggling to sleep at night, it’s time to wake up to the fact that there are things you can do about it.

According to the recently published DSM-5, a sleep disorder is not only a risk factor for subsequent development of certain mental conditions, but a potential warning sign for serious mental or medical issues. For example, sleep disturbances can signal the presence of medical and neurological problems such as congestive heart failure, osteoarthritis, or Parkinson’s disease.

Sleep disorders range from insomnia to narcolepsy, and breathing-related disorders to restless legs syndrome. Insomnia is by far the most common with

50 per cent of the population experiencing it at some point in their lives.

Defi ning insomniaDr Delwyn Bartlett is a psychologist and insomnia specialist from the Woolcock Research Institute in Sydney, she says “if it takes more than 30 minutes to get to sleep and this happens more than three times a week and continues for over a month then you have insomnia. Diffi culty staying asleep or waking too early is also a component”. Ideally the healthy sleep range is between six and a half to eight hours per night and typically healthy sleepers take about 15 minutes to get to sleep.

Not only is insomnia highly distressing at night when you’re trying to nod off, the negative fl ow-on effects of non-sleep the next day can be just as stressful. Aside

from looking like you have had a big night out, day time consequences of not getting a good night’s sleep range from a lack of concentration, grumpiness, poor memory, clumsiness/carelessness, low mood, irritability, fatigue, headaches, depression and even anxiety.

So what is causing so many sleepless citizens? Bartlett says the causes range considerably “Sleeplessness can be brought on by lifestyle choices, including the medications you take, lack of exercise, jet lag, too much caffeine, worrying to much, anxiety and hormone changes can also trigger it, everyone is different as is each case”

Herbal helpWhat we put into our bodies can affect our stress levels and the way we sleep. Research shows certain herbs can be benefi cial in helping us go to sleep and stay asleep. Panax notoginseng is one such herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to help treat insomnia and to calm the mind.

Ginseng has a history of use going back over 5,000 years. It is one of the most highly regarded of herbal medicines in the

Top tips for a good night’s sleep

Currently over one third of Australians experience insomnia, and it’s a percentage that continues to grow as the stresses of modern living increase.

Siobhan Moylan investigates natural, non-addictive options for the insomniacs of this world.

Establish a regular bedtime – go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning, even at weekends

Do something that relaxes you and takes your mind of any worries before going to bed – watch TV, read a book or simply picture yourself in your favourite, peaceful place

Use lighter bed coverings and turn off central heating – becoming overheated can disturb sleep

Don’t have a heavy meal just before bedtime. If you tend to wake up with ‘night hunger’ eat a light protein snack before bed

Don’t drink alcohol in the evening, it can create disturbed sleep and

overheating during the night

Don’t do strenuous exercise before sleeping

Stop drinking coffee and tea, or restrict it to morning only. Try a cup of chamomile tea or even licorice tea in the evening both have been known to induce sleep

Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and conducive to sleeping – move the TV out

If you’re worried about something, write the problem down on a piece of paper, together with solutions , before going to bed

Try dabbing a little relaxing lavender essential oil on the insides of your wrists and your temples before bed

If you feel you need a little extra help try anti-anxiety herbs that to help induce sleep naturally.

Orient and for good reason. A specifi c extract derived from Panax notoginseng known as Panatonin™, has been clinically shown to reduce the time taken to fall asleep and improve sleeping time. It works by regulating the ‘excitability’ of the brain; in doing so it may reduce the incidence of stress and anxiety. By reducing stress and anxiety the brain can more easily ‘switch off’.

Zizyphus jujuba seed is another herb worth considering as an ingredient if more sleep is what the doctor has ordered. Traditionally it has been used for its calming actions and has long been used to reduce irritability and restlessness given its natural sedative properties. Other nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, and iron are also important for good sleep. A defi ciency in these minerals can lead to insomnia.

Winding downLearning strategies to switch off your thinking mind is a key element of training yourself to sleep well, one way you can do this is by physically switching your appliances off at night says Bartlett “you need to wind down your light exposure close to bed time, you need to look forward to the end of the day and make your bedroom a place of sleep not work, it is about slowing down and letting go…We really still don’t have enough information about blue LED lights from computers yet, we do know that if young people are playing interactive games on computers at night that can delay sleep onset by up to 40-50 minutes”

Act earlyA recent Swedish study shows that if insomnia is left untreated, it can lead to anxiety and/or depression, likewise if depression is left untreated, this may lead to insomnia “it’s bio-directional” says Bartlett “So many people know that they have a problem because they can sense it and research shows that if you do seek help, particularly early on then you won’t develop anxiety around sleeping, so if you do think you have a problem, I would encourage you to seek help”.

It’s time to recuperate and

distribution and movement around your meridians and organ systems. In the case of colds and fl u, key contributing factors may include an excess of Wind, Cold or Heat. How can I support my Defensive Qi?A healthy, balanced diet is central to optimising Qi. Other important steps you can take include getting regular exercise (unless your Qi is signifi cantly depleted, in which case you may be wiser to take a break), spending time in nature, and making sure you get the sleep you need.

Herbal medicines can also help to restore and maintain Defensive Qi, support resistance against infection and promote recuperation after periods of ill health. And since Qi is the vital energy your body needs to function, herbs that have traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to build and strengthen Qi also support immunity and improve both your energy levels and your ability to cope with physical and mental stress – effects that are exactly what you need when you’re feeling run down!

Examples of immune tonics include: Astragalus, one of the most important

immune system tonics in Chinese herbal medicine, which has traditionally been used to restore Defensive Qi, support the body’s stress-coping mechanisms, and address fatigue and debility. It may be especially useful if you’re prone to catching colds easily

Siberian ginseng, which is best known in Australia for its ability to enhance stamina and vitality, but has also traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to prevent respiratory infections such as colds and fl u. It may be particularly benefi cial during times of increased stress or pressure, and when recovering from common illnesses

Schisandra, which has traditionally been

used to restore depleted Qi, promote resistance against disease, and improve the ability to cope with physical, mental and emotional stress.

These herbs – along with others that have traditionally been used to keep immunity strong, such as Codonopsis, Ganoderma (Reishi), and Licorice – may all be taken throughout winter to help maintain resistance and prevent common respiratory infections.

However, if you do get sick, it’s best to stop taking these Qi-boosting herbs temporarily and switch to a herbal formula that’s specifi cally aimed at addressing symptoms of colds and fl u. Key herbs to look for include Echinacea (which supports immunity and may help relieve cold and fl u symptoms), and herbs such as Honeysuckle, Forsythia and Andrographis, which have traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to help the body fi ght upper respiratory infections and clear the excessive Heat that often characterises them.

After the acute stage of the infection has passed, support your recuperation and help prevent re-infection by starting to take your immune system tonic herbs again.

Can’t stop coughing? You’ve got your energy back, you’re no longer sneezing, and all should be right with the world again. And it would be… if only you could shake that wretched cough!

A frustrating cough is often the last symptom to disappear after you’ve had a cold or dose of the fl u. It’s a sign that despite the fact you’re feeling better, your body hasn’t quite recuperated from the infection it has recently dealt with.

From the traditional Chinese perspective, one of the issues involved may be disruption

to the normal movement of your Lung Qi. As discu ssed, in Chinese medicine, one of the central roles of the Lung is to disperse Defensive Qi throughout the body so that it can fulfi l its vital role in helping to maintain immunity.

When all is well, Lung Qi has a natural tendency to move in a downward direction. However, when you have a respiratory infection, that descending dispersal of the Qi can be inhibited, causing it to build up until it eventually moves upwards instead, triggering a coughing fi t. While coughing is an important bodily response that enables mucus congestion to be cleared, persistent and unproductive coughing can also deplete Lung Qi, interfere with Lung function and increase your susceptibility to recurrent respiratory infections.

So what’s the solution? Firstly, relieve coughing symptoms with herbal medicines traditionally used to promote effi cient expectoration and the descent of Lung Qi (Pinellia is a good example) and support the health and functioning of the Lung organ-meridian by addressing Lung Qi defi ciency or excessive Cold or Wind-Heat (such as Aster).

At the same time, consider taking immune system supporting herbs such as Astragalus, Ganoderma (Reishi), Siberian ginseng and Schisandra to help restore your Qi, boost your immune defences and support recuperation after infection.

Chat to the friendly staff at Go Vita to fi nd out which herbal combination is most suitable for your situation.Paul Keogh is the executive and technical director for Global Therapeutics P/L trading as Fusion Health. Paul is a qualifi ed naturopath and medical herbalist with 25 years combined experience in clinical practice and the development of integrated Chinese and western herbal medicines.

Now that the worst of winter is on its way out, it’s tempting to think the cold and fl u season is too. But if

you’re run down or have had a few colds over the past few months, it’s important

to continue to support your immune system. Paul Keogh investigates.

While you might not actually be sick right now, at this time of year many people feel worn out, and as though they’re fi ghting something off and may succumb to a cold or fl u at any moment.

From the viewpoint of traditional Chinese medicine, these vague symptoms – which can include fatigue, poor concentration and intermittent episodes of mild sore

throat or runny nose – may indicate that your Defensive Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) has become defi cient or depleted.

What is Qi?Qi is the vital energy or life force that powers your daily activities and physical functions. It constantly moves around the body along channels or pathways called meridians, which interconnect different organ systems and tissues. Health problems can develop if the fl ow of Qi becomes weak or impeded, and restoring the fl ow of Qi and the appropriate energetics to the body is vital to restoring balance and allowing the body to heal.

Defensive Qi is a specifi c form of Qi that supports your resistance against disease. If it becomes defi cient, you may be more vulnerable than usual to those vague feelings of being run down, and more prone to catching colds and fl u.

Defensive Qi is generated within the body and distributed by the Lung organ-meridian, the system in Chinese medicine that not only controls breathing, but also the voice, sinuses, skin and mucous membranes. Together, the Lung organ-meridian system and the Defensive Qi play a crucial role in maintaining the body’s defences against disease and helping to fi ght off infection.

What interferes with Qi and its functioning? In traditional Chinese medicine, a number of different external and

internal forces are attributed with the ability to make you sick by interfering with the amount of Qi available to your body and/or its

Probiotics make you happyA recent trial published in Gastroenterology suggests that probiotics may well soothe your mind as well as your gut! University of California researchers gave fermented milk products to healthy women and concluded that the probiotics affected brain regions controlling the central processing of emotion and sensation. The probiotics reduced the brain’s response suggesting they may play a powerful role in modulating pain sensitivity, stress responsiveness, mood and anxiety – that’s good news for probiotic consumers!

Omega-3s offer hope for skin protectionResearchers from the University of Manchester reported that healthy volunteers taking omega-3s had 50 per cent lower immunosuppression when exposed to the sun as compared to those taking placebo. The lead researcher said “This study adds to the evidence that omega-3 is a potential nutrient to protect against skin cancer. Although the changes we found when someone took the oil were small, they suggest that a continuous low level of chemoprevention from taking omega-3 could reduce the risk of skin cancer over an individual’s lifetime.” But remember, omega-3s are not a substitute for sunscreen or covering up.

Vitamin Bfor Alzheimer’s patientsExciting research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that a supplement of B vitamins may slow down the shrinkage of a certain part of the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Homocysteine levels previously linked with cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer’s, declined by as much as 29 per cent in the B vitamin supplemented group. So it appears that there is potential for supplementing early stage dementia patients (with high homocysteine levels) with high dose B vitamins to reduce brain deterioration.

Vitamin D reduces asthma symptomsA new UK study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology concluded that vitamin D could potentially provide an effective add-on treatment for all asthma sufferers and perhaps reduce the doses of steroids in some patients. Researchers found that asthma patients had much higher levels of a natural chemical, IL-17A, than people without asthma and that vitamin D could signifi cantly reduce the production of IL-17A.

Multivitamins may benefi tmood and wellbeingA recent trial published in Appetite found that after 16 weeks multivitamin supplementation in 20-50 year olds signifi cantly reduced stress, anxiety and fatigue ratings in at home reporting but not in chronic laboratory test - leading researchers to believe that more research is needed to assess multivitamins possible effects on mood.

Tarrena and Emma are two Yalari students from The

Kimberley in Western Australia. Both attending Geelong Grammar School, they thoroughly impressed everyone at Yalari last year with their generosity and hard work in fundraising for Yalari’s Fire Appeal.

Soon after the fi re that destroyed the Yalari offi ce in August 2012, Tarrena and Emma travelled home for the school holidays.

They were both upset at the news of the fi re and wanted to do something to help.

According to Tarrena’s mum Fran, the girls came up with the idea of asking local businesses in Derby for help.

Emma reckons they approached about 20 local businesses. A lot said no, some gave $10 or $20. “Some were hesitant and wanted a bit more information or wanted to think about it, which was fair enough.”

“Gungulla Mackay which is a big truck business gave us a thousand dollars. We were so excited. Then Derby Retravision gave us $500, then Tyrepower $300. The butcher, newsagency, deli and hardware store all gave generously too. It was awesome, people were so generous.

Tarrena says that Yalari gave her and Emma such an amazing opportunity, and

they wanted to give something back when the organisation really needed it. “We were so happy to do something, so proud of ourselves when we realised we raised $2,770 for Yalari.”

Llew Mullins, the Director of Scholarships for Yalari was shocked and humbled. “There’s signifi cant hardship in Derby and to think that community was thinking of us was heart-warming. It really gave me, Waverley and the Yalari staffa much needed lift during a reallyhard time.”

Psyllium: Getting the right amount of fi bre helps to maintain regular bowel movements. As well as eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and high-fi bre cereals such as bran, drink plenty of water throughout the day. You can also take fi bre supplements, such as psyllium, which softens stools to help increase bowel frequency if you are constipated, and encourages stool formation to decrease loose, frequent bowel movements if you have diarrhoea.

Probiotics: Many studies show how these healthy bacteria can improve gut health and digestive function. One study reported that 84 per cent of sampled IBS patients registered abnormal lactulose breath tests, indicating an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the small intestine. Probiotic use in this instance would help to bring back a balance of good and bad bacteria to the digestive system, therefore improving IBS symptoms.

Dietary and lifestyle changesFood allergies and sensitivities can play a signifi cant role in IBS. Recording all foods you eat in a diet diary will reveal direct links between particular foods and symptoms. This trial and error process will help you to eliminate the foods causing you grief. Common culprits are gluten, dairy, soy, sugars and artifi cial sweeteners, fried foods, eggs, peanuts, corn and carbonated drinks.

A gluten sensitivity can be diffi cult to assess because gluten is found everywhere – not only is it in breads and pastas, it is also added to canned and bottled foods as a thickening agent. Check labels carefully, as gluten is also found in other grains such as rye, barley and spelt. All gluten needs to be eliminated for at least three weeks to identify a link with IBS.

Regardless of whether your tummy troubles tend towards constipation or diarrhoea, it’s important to keep your fl uid intake high to help the bowel function optimally. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol, which are harsh on the digestive system and can make symptoms worse. Herbal teas are a good alternative. Peppermint and fennel have traditionally been used to relive colicky spasmodic pains in the bowel, while chamomile is traditionally indicated for digestive conditions associated with stress and tension.

Although not a sign of serious underlying illness, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a painful – not to mention embarrassing – condition that can

cause major interruption to social and working lives. Naturopath Kathy Grace investigates.

Most of us have experienced the occasional bad bowel day, but an IBS diagnosis is when abdominal discomfort or pain, associated with changing bowel habits, lasts for longer than 12 weeks. IBS symptoms include (and can alternate

between) bloating, gas, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal discomfort or pain.

Contributing causes The causes of IBS aren’t fully understood, and while there doesn’t appear any one specifi c cause, there are indeed several factors that seem to contribute. These include stress, depression and an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestines. Certain foods (such as gluten, dairy and citrus) and drugs (such as NSAIDs and HRT) can aggravate the bowel and bring on IBS. Some women experience a worsening of symptoms when they menstruate, which has lead some experts to believe that hormone levels play a role.

Natural remediesThere are many tried and tested herbal

remedies for IBS, such as peppermint oil, aloe vera, psyllium fi bre and, more recently, probiotics.

Peppermint oil: The soothing properties of this herb have been shown to provide relief for IBS sufferers. A systematic review of studies

involving more than 2,500 adults with IBS found that peppermint oil was more effective than both

antispasmodics and fi bre supplements.Aloe vera: Known for its healing and anti-

infl ammatory properties, aloe vera is another common remedy for IBS. Taken as a juice, it can be calming on the digestive system and help to heal the gut wall.

Your genes and your lifestyle have a lot to do with how your skin ages, however you can help protect and improve the health of your skin by looking after it with nourishing and protecting natural ingredients.

Jojoba oil – a multivitaminfor your skinJojoba (pronounced ‘ho-ho-ba’) oil is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba bush. Traditionally used by native Americans for skin and hair care, the molecules of jojoba oil are very narrow and fi ne, allowing the oil to be readily absorbed into the skin, the end result is beautiful, smooth, supple and moisturised skin! Sydney-based naturopath Anastasia Zafi ropoulos recommends jojoba oil for the following benefi ts: As a moisturiser – particularly for

dry skin, just a few drops applied to the face and body as needed helps to restore moisture to the skin, use after showering, shaving or waxing. Alternatively adding a few drops to a natural base cream works too.

As a treatment – use a few drops in the bath to leave the skin feeling soft and supple, particularly useful for dry areas such as elbows and behind the knees, also soothing for babies suffering eczema. Jojoba oil is great for applying to babies with cradle cap too and a great natural alternative to using mineral based ‘baby oils’.

Jojoba oil helps to control sebum so is ideal for acne sufferers or those prone to oily skin due to its anti-infl ammatory properties.

As a hair treatment and conditioner – add a few drops of jojoba oil to your conditioner or for itchy, dry scalp conditions, massage a few drops of jojoba oil into your scalp and hair and wrap your hair in a towel and leave for a couple of hours. This is a great treatment for those who love using hair dryers and straightening irons!

Hand, nail and foot treatment – help soften dry and hard cuticles or rub the oil into your dry and chapped hands or cracked heels to soften and nourish.

Pomegranate oil – a potent antioxidant for your skinSince antiquity, the pomegranate has appeared in art, literature and legend as a symbol of life, power, beauty and fertility, which is appropriate as some pomegranate trees are known to live for over 200 years. The seeds of the fruit produce a fi ne oil rich in punicic acid, a potent antioxidant that helps promote skin cell renewal and regeneration. In addition to this, pomegranate oil contains fatty acids, vitamin E, fl avonoids and phytohormones – all scientifi cally shown to increase collagen and promote cell renewal.

Due to its properties pomegranate oil is ideal for ageing skin. As you age, your skin becomes thinner, drier and less elastic. It gradually starts to produce less oil and collagen, and skin cells take longer to regenerate. As a result, the skin’s barrier function decreases, increasing susceptibility to infections, bruising and moisture loss. However much younger skin can also show signs of ageing, usually as a result of overexposure to UV light, smoking, drinking too much

10 waysyou’re lettingyour health down

Exercise and eat right, they’re the two major components to good health, aren’t they? So if you’re doing that, you may think your health is fi ne. Good holistic health is far more than those two aspects, even though they are important. Here are 10 ways that you might be letting your health down without even realising it.

1 You’re a workaholicIf you’re the fi rst one into work of a

morning, the last one to leave and your lunchbreak consists of downing your lunch at your desk, then your work and health habits need a performance review.

Finnish research published in the Journalof Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that people who worked long hours fell sick more often than people who worked shorter hours.

Likewise, American research published in the same journal revealed that people who work extensive hours, over-time and had a long commute were 61 per cent more likely to be injured at work.

2 You’re nutrient poorNot getting enough variety in your

diet, or making poor food choices means you aren’t getting the right nutrients

to help your body function effectively. Australian

research has found that people who eat healthily

have better mental health, whereas people with a poor diet were more likely to have depression, anxiety and other mental health

conditions.

3 You think life is too short to sleepGetting enough shut-eye, so around seven to eight hours a

night will do you and your waistline a world of good. A six year Canadian study published in the Journal of Sleep found that sleeping less than seven hours a night resulted in an annual 2kg weight gain and a 27 per cent increased risk of obesity.

4 You’re a gym junkieThere is no denying that exercise is brilliant for you. It

helps with weight management, can help prevent or lower risk factors for chronic disease and can improve your mental health. However, too much strenuous exercise isn’t that great. According to research conducted by the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, excessive exercising may deplete your immune function making you far more susceptible to common minor illnesses such as respiratory tract infections.

5 Your social life is on its deathbedAdmittedly, friends and family can

drive you up the wall sometimes, but avoiding social interaction isn’t the answer. Isolating yourself from family and friends is a breeding ground for depression according to Australian mental health organisation, beyondblue. However, having a strong social network results in happiness reports a 20 year study published in the British Medical Journal. The study of 4000 people showed that the more you see your friends or family, the happier everyone is.

6 You’re a dedicated carnivoreEating too much red meat – even the lean, unprocessed kind

– can increase your risk of dying from heart disease and cancer by up to two per cent. A study of more than 120,000 men and women that was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine learnt that almost 10,000 cancer and heart disease deaths could have been prevented if the study participants had eaten no more than half a serving or 42g of red meat a day.

Reassess your lifestyle habits and discover what might be impacting

on your health. The answers might surprise you. Simone McClenaughan reports.

7 You don’t leave time to bend and stretchIf you think stretching before and after exercise is a waste

of time, then think again. A study published in the Journal of Athletic Training discovered that stretching pre and post exercise resulted in reduced muscle soreness for three days after a workout. Additionally, stretching may also decrease the chances of injury.

8 You don’t let the sun shine inThe sun is the primary way we build our vitamin D levels.

As little as 10-15 minutes a day is suffi cient to get your dose of vitamin D. Shying away from the sun can lead to a vitamin D defi ciency. This defi ciency is linked to diseases and conditions such as cancer, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness and diabetes.

9 You can’t remember what personal time is

Taking time out for yourself each day is crucial for your mental health and wellbeing. Without that all important me-time, you’re on the path to emotional exhaustion, stress and strained relationships. Applying mindfulness and a self-care routine to your day, whether it’s meditating or just relaxing by yourself, can help reduce stress and cope better with life explains the Freiburg Institute for Mindfulness Research in Germany.

10 You’re on a diet … againThe cycle of on a diet, off a diet is known as yo-yo dieting

or weight cycling. And it’s simply not good for you. An American report published in the University of California Los Angeles’s journal, Nutrition Noteworthy, states that one of the reasons weight cycling is bad for you is that it increases your chances of developing hypertension or high blood pressure. Hypertension is a major risk factor of stroke and heart disease. The DieticiansAssociation of Australia recommends consuming a wide variety of nutritious foods and adopting a healthy lifestyle that balances yourenergy intake with your energy output.

Australian Harvest founder Martin Cheney, has combined two organically grown herbs – fresh horseradish and garlic, with Curcumax, a concentrated extract of the anti-infl ammatory curcumoids from the spice turmeric and the OPC-rich BIO-GRAPE grape seed extract.

In clinical trials, the BIO-GRAPE grape seed extract has been shown to improve elasticity of capillaries, improving peripheral circulation. Martin says, “I have designed the Australian Harvest Organic Horseradish Vinegar exactly the same way that I would design a natural health supplement, but instead of using dry granulated ingredients I have used fresh organic ingredients for quick absorption and effectiveness.”

The combination of these therapeutic herbs made into beautiful tasting herb vinegar by using certifi ed organic apple cider vinegar as the extraction base, helps to dry your sinuses and reduce infl ammation helping you breathe freely.

Australian Harvest Organic Horseradish Vinegar tastes so good you can take it with a teaspoon three times a day or use it as the base for a delicious salad dressing. Australian Harvest Horseradish Vinegar is certifi ed organic and does not contain artifi cial preservatives, colours, fl avours or animal by-products. Available from Go Vita stores nationally.

the certifi ed organic colours of lifeThere has been much interest recently in the active components of the spice turmeric – the curcumoids (which are also the colour pigments), and their growing list of health benefi ts. While health supplements are available, Bio-Grape Nutraceuticals has created a versatile powdered food product – Bio-Grape Bio-Curcumin 95%, which contains a standardised extract of the certifi ed organic bio-active curcumoids.

Niulife expands range to includesoy alternativeCoconut products are defi nitely popular at the moment, not least because of the high amounts of healthy fats they contain. The Niulife coconut company, who brought coconut oil to Australia over 20 years ago, has fuelled this popularity by adding new and innovative products to their coconut range.

One of the more recent product additions is Coconut Amino Sauce. This has proved a hit with the Paleo community who look for alternatives to soy. The sauce is made from coconut blossom nectar - fermented and aged to increase its amino acid content. This process also helps develop the delicious fl avours of the sauce. This is a great alternative to soy sauce containing no soy and also less sodium. Use in place of soy sauce in salad dressings, marinades, soups, stir-fries, over vegies or rice, or with your favourite sushi.

The Niulife range includes desiccated, shredded and fl aked coconut, coconut fl our, oil, sugar, syrup, vinegar andcreamed coconut.www.niulife.com

Whey protein, once the exclusive domain of body builders,

is now more popular than ever for nutrition-conscious people of all ages.

Protein is the most abundant constituent in the human body besides water. Amongst other functions, it makes up the structure of your skin, hair, nails, bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and is required for hormonal and enzymatic function. Your body continuously breaks protein down into its individual building blocks the amino acids, and then re-assembles the amino acids into the bodily structures it requires.

It’s vital that you eat some protein every day, because although the body can create some of the amino acids it needs, others (termed essential amino acids) are only available from your diet.

The benefi t of proteinYour body needs protein for energy,

growth and repair. In fact the right level of protein in your diet will help your body to: Recover quicker after exercise Support muscle recovery after exercise

and tone up Balance blood sugar and stave off

carbohydrate cravings

Feel fuller after eating, and stay fuller for longer

Improve digestion by increasing nutrient absorption

Maintain steady energy levels (reduce fatigue) and metabolism

Support healthy memory andsleep patterns

Rebuild and repair all kinds of tissue from bones to joints and skinThis impressive list of functions

means that protein can be an important nutrient for students studying for exams, pregnant and breast feeding women, weekend warriors and serious athletes, vegans and vegetarians, the elderly or those on weight management programs, convalescing or consuming a poor diet. So just to dispel any myths, what protein won’t do – at least, not by itself – is bulk you up!

Whey protein isolate versus concentrateWhey is a by-product of cheese

manufacture, it contains little fat or lactose due to processing, hence is easily digested. NutriVital Good For You Foods has recently added two high quality protein powders to their range. Shakes and smoothies are an ideal way to add protein to your day.

Whey protein isolate (WPI) is a high protein (usually around 90 per cent) low fat, low carbohydrate and low sugar supplement. WPI is the result of a longer

and more complicated fi ltering process than WPC, and as such has a lower level of lactose (it contains around 1-2 per cent) and fat than WPC. This is the premium protein, ideal for use in the fi rst thirty minutes after training to assist with muscle recovery and muscle building. Also for those on calorie restricted diets WPI is an ideal choice.

Whey protein concentrate (WPC) provides the body with a steady supply of protein throughout the day and night (WPC has a typical protein content of around 80 per cent), ideal to sustain hunger pangs in between meals, and for muscle recovery and development. With a higher amount of lactoferrin than WPI this is ideal as an everyday protein supplement for everyday health, energy, muscle recovery and toning.
