Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship,

may we experience together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s new house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way.

Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church.

Our Worship service is designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

Worship Information

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you

will find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

ownership do it? Nope. How about more responsibility at work? Not there either.

The realization of countless wasted years and misspent moments saddens me. By serving others For a Christian, “arriving” is not seeing all of your self-centered ambitions come true. It’s coming to that place where you step off the path of selfish desire to find a whole new path with Jesus. “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25). You lose yourself in serving Christ and everyone else. In this way, you find your life when you lose it. In other words, human beings don’t “arrive” until they stop striving to arrive and start serving.

Being a servant changes everything. You no longer worry about how you look in the eyes of others. Instead, you’re always thinking about how you can make their lives better. You don’t want to be known as the best servant either. Exploited service is not service at all. Serving is truly considering others better than oneself. It is nipping in the bud every thought of how someone would return your love. It is selfless and self-forgetful at the core. It is freedom from all the ways that envy and ambition make you angry with others.

How could any of us ever hope to be this kind of selfless servant? It only happens by meeting Jesus. He has the power to show us how to serve while giving us the love that makes us want to.

Jesus “arrived” the day he was born. “Arriving” meant he would serve everyone. When you look at Jesus, you see love and feel love changing you from the inside out.

What does it mean to “arrive?” It means to find freedom in Christ from your selfish desires to live a life of joyful service to everyone else. Anyone can “arrive” on any day of their lives as long as their hearts are focused on Jesus. That’s what Jesus meant when he said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31,32).

Jesus doesn’t just free us from our sin and guilt. He also frees us from ourselves.

Donald Patterson, the South Central District president, is pastor at Holy Word, Austin, Texas.

RLC Book Club - Tuesday, September 20th

On September 20th at 7pm we will meet in the youth room to discuss the book Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple.

Contact Julie Krause at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We have arrived!

2016/08/31/in FIC Features, Forward in Christ

Through Jesus, we can escape our selfish desires and ambitions and live a life a service to Christ and others. Donald W. Patterson What does it mean to have “arrived” in life? For some, it’s finding that recognition, acclaim, respect, success, and contentment. Not by earthly accomplishments

I have wasted way too much time finding out what it does not mean. I remember the backyard football games and fighting to “arrive” by desperately trying to win every game. I used to think that when I finally scored a touchdown in a peewee football game that I would “arrive.” After four years of hard work I did score, but I did not “arrive.” I wanted more. I thought if I could knock a homerun over the fence in Little League baseball that I would “arrive.” I did hit a homer when I was 12. It cleared the fence by two feet! (I used to think that was a lot.) But I still didn’t “arrive.” I wanted more.

I thought learning to drive would do it. Nope. Maybe getting a scholarship would do it. Nope. How about marriage? Not that either. When we had children and someone called me “Dad,” maybe then I would feel like I had “arrived.” It still eluded me. Would home

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader: Let us pray.

Lord, we pray that your mercy and grace may always go before and follow after us that, loving you with undivided hearts, we may be ready for every good and useful work; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

Please be seated

THE WORD FIRST LESSON: Hosea 3:1-5 NIV

Hosea’s Reconciliation With His Wife 1 The LORD said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”

2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley. 3 Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”

4 For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods. 5 Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the LORD and to his blessings in the last days.

PSALM 51a All: Refrain

Have mercy on me, O God,* according to your unfailing love.

Wash away all my iniquity,* and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,* and my sin is always before me.

Refrain Against you, you only, have I sinned*

and done what is evil in your sight.

Surely I was sinful at birth,* sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Hide your face from my sins,* and blot out all my iniquity.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,* and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.

People: Amen.

Leader: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

ON COMMUNING

Non-alcoholic wine is available for those who desire it. The non-alcoholic wine is white.

The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life and worship (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord's Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray. It would be unloving of us as a congregation to invite visitors to the Lord’s table. We would not be so presumptuous as to make any visitor take a stand with our doctrine and practice without first providing opportunity to explore the Bible's teachings with them.(1 Cor. 11:27-29). Our pastor would be happy to explore this unity with you, on the basis of God's Word, so that you might commune with us in the future.

SECOND LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: 2 Corinthians 2:5-11 NIV

Forgiveness for the Offender 5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. 9 Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. VERSE OF THE DAY

Leader: Alleluia! For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Alleluia! (Romans 15:4)

Please stand in reverence to the words of our Lord

Page 8

GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 15:1-10 NIV

The Parable of the Lost Sheep 1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. The Parable of the Lost Coin 8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise be to You, O Christ.

Page 13

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

All: WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Leader: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

People: Amen

Page 12

Leader: God of the ages, in the fullness of time Your Son became flesh, and He received sinners and ate with them on His way to the cross. Bless all those whom He feeds today with His own holy body and blood. Guard them from impenitence and resistance to Your promises, and with forgiveness grant them life and salvation. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: We join in the Lord’s Prayer. LORD’S PRAYER

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

PREFACE Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. People: It is good and right so to do.

Leader: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory.

Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

CONFESSION OF FAITH

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated HYMN OF THE DAY: 304 VV. 1-3,6,7 “Jesus Sinners Does Receive” (in the red book under your chair)

God comforts sinners with forgiveness Questions to consider while hearing the sermon:

1. When is comfort most comforting? 2. What was the situation in Corinth? 3. How did they make sin too small? 4. What amazing thing happened by the power of God's Word? 5. How did they make sin too big? 6. How do we make sin too small? Too big? 7. What did Jesus do with our sin? 8. What kind of sinner needs comfort? 9. What is always the goal of confronting? 10. How to pass the test and balance not making sin too small and not making sin too big? For further discussion/Vine and Branches

Share a time you found forgiveness comforting. Which is a bigger temptation for you, to make sin too small or to make sin too big? Think of a person you haven't seen in a while. Pray for them. Pray for strength to comfort them with forgiveness. List the schemes the devil uses to make sin too small. List the schemes he uses to make sin too big.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Leader: Lord God, You promise to shepherd Your sheep for the sake of Jesus. According to Your Word, seek the lost, bring back the straying, bind up the injured and strengthen the weak. Have mercy upon all who look to You for deliverance. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: Lord God, You seek out Your sheep from all nations and gather them into Your fold. Remember all refugees who have been displaced from their homes because of threats and violence. Provide for their needs in their time of displacement, and grant them the security of a home once more. Likewise, provide for the needs of immigrants, grant wisdom to nations for the welfare of both citizens and sojourners, and grant that Your people might prove to be good neighbors for all who are scattered far from home. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: Almighty God, on this day of remembrance in our land, remind us always of the realities of evil and death in this world, and further keep us in the certainty that Christ has overcome the world. Preserve peace in this and every nation, thwart the plans of all who desire violence and war, and give to rulers wisdom and integrity to protect the innocent and punish the evildoer. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: God of all truth, bless all those who labor with gainful employment and adequate compensation. Remember and guide all journalists and members of the media, that they might speak the truth and serve as a deterrent against the sinful ambitions of man. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.
