A BLARE OF TRUMPETS FOR
THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ST. NICHOLAS PARISH
From the Pastor’s Desk
Memorial Day Weekend has suddenly arrived! This year
it is earlier than usual which makes it all the harder to believe it is
here. I usually find Memorial Day weekend to be one of the best
weekends of the year. But, with all the rain, the shutdown of many
businesses with this pandemic, Memorial Day has lost some of its
charm. Then again, the meaning of Memorial Day remains
strong. We remember and honor those who have served our great
country.
With this Holiday Weekend, we are also aware of the
Class of 2020. Many of our students are graduating this
week from our elementary, high schools and colleges. With the
cancelation of many of the commencement ceremonies the
acknowledgement of all the hard work and accomplishments are
left unrecognized. Our congratulations go out to all our
graduates. We encourage them with our prayers and best wishes as
they move on to their next step in life, especially during these
particularly difficult times.
Tomorrow, May 25, we will return to having our weekday
masses. I decided to have our morning mass Monday through
Friday at 9:00 a.m. My intention is to make the time available for
those who do not feel comfortable with the possible larger
gathering for Sunday mass. Since the obligation to attend Sunday
mass has been lifted through September 13th, I think this is an
option, especially since there are some who will exempt themselves
from Sunday. Again, we are trying to adjust to our current
situation. We need to exercise flexibility, patience and common
sense.
It is a good thing that we return to weekday masses with
our observance of Memorial Day. In the past we have usually had a
good attendance for mass on our National Holidays. I think this
reflects a good and healthy patriotic consciousness of our
community. So, we pray with thankful hearts for those who have
served our country through their military service. In service to our
country they are in actuality serving all of us. Military service
requires personal sacrifice for the citizens of our country. This
sacrifice is most especially noted by those who have made the
greatest sacrifice on the battlefields throughout the world. Their
courageous sacrifice in battle can never be overshadowed and
forgotten. We owe them our grateful prayers of thanksgiving and
commend their souls to the eternal care of God. We are also
mindful of those who have died after their service and gratefully
returned home and in a special way we recall those veterans who
have died this past year. These brave men and women have
generously served our country upholding those principles and
values that make our country great. Military service is offered for
the sake of the citizens of the United States as well as for all people
and those countries who have called upon our country in their
need.
As a country we enjoy liberty and justice. We are
sensitive to the desire of the human heart for freedom. We
find the oppression of peoples to be unacceptable. As such we are
especially sensitive to all peoples who are unjustly oppressed. We
know this deep down within because only with freedom the human
person flourishes. Our faith tells us that freedom is a divine
gift. God blesses us with freedom so that we may take
responsibility for our lives. Personal responsibility is the mark of
a mature human person. We can freely choose a life of virtue or a
life of vice for which we are responsible. We cannot be forced to
live either. However, we know that a virtuous life is a truly
free life while all vice enslaves. We cherish our freedom to be the
people God has called us to be: virtuous, responsible and
profoundly free.
The real tragic thing about our basic freedom is that some
would rather sacrifice their freedom and the responsibility that goes
with it for a feeling of “security” of being told when and what to
do. This eventually results in nether liberty nor security.
On this Memorial Day we need to pause with thankful
hearts for those who lived, dedicated and made their sacrifice for
us to enjoy this God given gift without fear or coercion. It goes
back to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and both World
Wars. All had to do with unjust aggressors seeking to control the
lives of others. Freedom is a great good and is worth the
sacrifice especially for those who truly desire it. We thank those
who willingly made that sacrifice in their service for our
country. We need to live a life worthy of their sacrifice by living
well the freedoms we enjoy. Freedom is worth the effort and
sacrifice necessary to possess, share and preserve. Freedom is
worth the sacrifice because it is worth living for.
Many people celebrate Memorial Day with the custom of
visiting cemeteries in honor of our deceased relatives and friends
who have served in the military. It is a good and pious practice to
visit the graves of our veterans. A prayer for the repose of their
souls is always a good thing. It is good for us to pray… “Eternal
Life grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon
them. May they rest in peace.” Amen and Thank You.
As we return to weekday mass, I would like to reassure
you that I was able to celebrate mass daily over the last nine weeks
of quarantine. All the scheduled mass intentions were offered. I
have to admit that it is a little different celebrating the Eucharist
alone. However, I did pray for you daily during the mass. Now I
look forward to having parishioners in the pews.
Lastly, today, we are also celebrating the Feast of the
Ascension of the Lord. With this feast we recall and celebrate Jesus
ascending to the right hand of the Father. Jesus Christ returns to
the Father with his resurrected and glorified human body. Jesus
has his resurrected and glorified human body forever. This is in
store for us. Where Jesus has gone, we hope to follow.
This is a very important point to be made: God created us
Body and Soul. Many people have the dualistic view of life
expressed as the Spirit is good and the Body is bad. Part of this
idea comes from the ancient philosophies of individuals like Plato
who considered the body, because of its imperfections, was a
prison for the human spirit. Eternal life happens when the spirit is
released from the prison of the body. A modern manifestation of
this idea is expressed when someone claims to be
a spiritual person. (They do not believe in organized religion or
church.) There is a truth here but not the whole truth. It is true that
we have a spiritual life, but that is not the whole story. We are
called to holiness while we live in the body. Spirituality is a means
to holiness which is expressed through the body. Holiness
transforms both body and soul. There has to be a bodily
manifestation of holiness. This is virtuous living. That is in part
the theology of the incarnation. In reality we are not destined to
live in eternity as spiritual beings. We are not angels, nor are we
intended to be angels. We are human beings, created in the Image
and Likeness of God, with a body and a soul. This is what we are:
beings with a body and a soul. Salvation and eternal life are for
both body and soul. “We believe in the resurrection of the body”
as we say in our creed. The teaching on the Ascension of the Lord
is an affirmation of the Resurrection and the ultimate goodness and
final destination of both the body and the soul: together and
glorified in heaven. Jesus Christ came to save us body and soul. It
is an affirmation of who we are as God’s beloved human beings.
Looking forward to next weekend… and God Bless you.
Father Ralko

THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey
as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the
Sick,
who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering,
and persevered in your faith. “Protectress of the Roman people”,
you know our needs, and we know that you will provide,
so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return
after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform ourselves to the will of the Father
and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering,
and burdened himself with our sorrows
to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.
Amen. We fly to your protection,
O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions
in our necessities, but deliver us always
from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
