Seaside United Methodist Church Volume 29, Issue 4 April 2020 Message from Pastor Francis “Then they said to one another, ‘We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent.’” 2 Kings 7:9 This verse has always been a powerful one for me. The context of the story is couched in an extremely difficult me for Israel. Samaria, the capitol of the northern kingdom, was under siege by Syria. The enre city was surrounded and there appeared lile hope that Israel would escape their apparent demise. The Syrian forces had completely cut off all supply lines and the inhabitants of the city had become so desperate that some of them had even resorted to cannibalism. In the midst of this drama we discover another drama unfolding. It seems that there were four lepers who were caught in a struggle for their own survival. For them, their greatest concern was not for the military threat and conflict of the two naons. They were not engaged in the debate over the cause of the blockade which effecvely choked the life out of Samaria. Their struggle was a different kind of struggle. It was an intensely personal struggle. It was their own survival that they were concerned about, the threat of which had come from condions and circumstances over which they had no con- trol. They were not permied to enter the city. Under normal condions, they would have relied on family to bring them food and leave it at the gate. Because of the blockade however, there was no food that could be brought to them. To violate the law was certain death. On the other hand, the Syrians had plenty of supplies and food but they were the enemy. If they approached them for food, surely they would die. Finally, to remain at the gates and wait on the outcome of the conflict they would also die. So, they decided to venture out to the Syrian camp. Perhaps they could get from them some food and sur- vive. If that didn’t work, their outcome would most likely be no different from what they would experience otherwise. So that is what they did. Upon entering the camp they were shocked to discover that the Syrians had evacuated leaving all of the food ready to eat and even the livestock they had. The lepers were like lile children on Christmas morning. They began to stuff them- selves with all that that they found, eang to their delight. That is when we get to verse 9. That is when one of them says to the other three, “Wait, we’re not doing right. This is a day of good news and we remain silent.” In the last week, we might find ourselves feeling a lile like the lepers. Condions and circumstances beyond our control have taken over our lives. All the news we hear seems to be bad news aſter bad news. In moments like these it is easy to forget the bounty of God’s blessing that lies before us. God’s Prevenient Grace is at work all around us. Even before there was talk of the Covid-19 virus, God provided for us a way to be the church. Reading the scriptures, praying for one an- other, sharing thoughts of gratude and virtual worship we are rediscovering a reality the early church understood, the church is not the building. The church is the people and part of being the people who are the church is sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with a world who is fearful and frightened of the unknown. The words of Jesus in John 16:33 speak to this pre- sent me very clearly. “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribula- on; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” It is true that we are not able to assemble for church as we are accustomed but Jesus has sll overcome the world. It is true that we miss seeing one another but we are sll the church. Find comfort in the good news of God’s love, mercy and grace, and for the fact that He who sits upon the throne is Lord of lords and King of kings. He is the Creator of the universe, Savior of the world and the Lord of our lives. He is the One who was and is and ever shall be the same. Thank God. Message from Pastor Francis

“Then they said to one another, ‘We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent.’” 2 Kings 7:9

This verse has always been a powerful one for me. The context of the story is couched in an extremely difficult time for Israel. Samaria, the capitol of the northern kingdom, was under siege by Syria. The entire city was surrounded and there appeared little hope that Israel would escape their apparent demise. The Syrian forces had completely cut off all supply lines and the inhabitants of the city had become so desperate that some of them had even resorted to cannibalism.

In the midst of this drama we discover another drama unfolding. It seems that there were four lepers who were caught in a struggle for their own survival. For them, their greatest concern was not for the military threat and conflict of the two nations. They were not engaged in the debate over the cause of the blockade which effectively choked the life out of Samaria. Their struggle was a different kind of struggle. It was an intensely personal struggle. It was their own survival that they were concerned about, the threat of which had come from conditions and circumstances over which they had no con-trol. They were not permitted to enter the city. Under normal conditions, they would have relied on family to bring them food and leave it at the gate. Perhaps they could get from them some food and sur-vive. If that didn’t work, their outcome would most likely be no different from what they would experience otherwise. So that is what they did.

Upon entering the camp they were shocked to discover that the Syrians had evacuated leaving all of the food ready to eat and even the livestock they had. The lepers were like little children on Christmas morning. They began to stuff them-selves with all that that they found, eating to their delight. That is when we get to verse 9. That is when one of them says to the other three, “Wait, we’re not doing right. This is a day of good news and we remain silent.”

In the last week, we might find ourselves feeling a little like the lepers. Conditions and circumstances beyond our control have taken over our lives. All the news we hear seems to be bad news after bad news. In moments like these it is easy to forget the bounty of God’s blessing that lies before us. God’s Prevenient Grace is at work all around us. Even before there was talk of the Covid-19 virus, God provided for us a way to be the church. Reading the scriptures, praying for one an-other, sharing thoughts of gratitude and virtual worship we are rediscovering a reality the early church understood, the church is not the building. The church is the people and part of being the people who are the church is sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with a world who is fearful and frightened of the unknown. The words of Jesus in John 16:33 speak to this pre-sent time very clearly. “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribula-tion; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

It is true that we are not able to assemble for church as we are accustomed but Jesus has still overcome the world. It is true that we miss seeing one another but we are still the church. Find comfort in the good news of God’s love, mercy and grace, and for the fact that He who sits upon the throne is Lord of lords and King of kings. He is the Creator of the universe, Savior of the world and the Lord of our lives. He is the One who was and is and ever shall be the same. Thank God.

"Let your faith be bigger than your fear....and keep on singing!"

I hope by the time you are reading this, things will begin to be back to normal but we won't know until then....so keep on singing even when you don't feel like it and keep on praising even when it feels hard to do because that's what we do when times get tough...we get tough! It's been an interesting time and I've learned a lot of things as I know you have. We serve a big God and we know He is in control so have no fear but in all things give thanks! I am thankful for YOU my church and music family and for all you do - THANK YOU! Hopefully we are learning new ways to BE THE CHURCH in our community.

Our plans will continue to include the next organ concert on Sunday, May 17th at 4:00 PM. We know everything can change but hopefully we will be able to enjoy this program! I'll let you know more soon. Until we meet again, stay safe and keep on singing, Kathryn

Seaside's Food Pantry Continues to Serve Our Neighbors

Ann Pike posted the following message on Seaside's "sticky notes" on

our website. "Wanted to share a very positive experience I had today. A few volunteers and I did a drive-through food pantry today and served approximately 25 families. Not only were they appreciative, but they were smiling, upbeat and full of praise and confidence in God. Their lives are often full of challenges that I am fortunate enough not to have to endure, but they so often uplift and inspire me. Thank you, Seaside, for being very supportive of this outreach mission of our church."

  • Calling All Volunteers… During this time a lot of us are feeling a bit alone and isolated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and others are either “self-quarantined,” or considered “high risk,” so they can’t even get out to the grocery store without jeopardizing their health…We want these folks to know that we do care about them and are willing to help in any way that we can. The staff at Seaside UMC will be putting together a new ministry called “Seaside Shoppers.” We’re looking for volunteers who are willing to pick up and deliver groceries that have been ordered and prepaid online to folks who are unable to get to the stores. After the order is placed, the volunteer will be notified of the place and time of pick up and delivery address. Or, for the folks who have no internet capabilities or computers, the shopper will do the shopping for them and deliver the groceries to them. When the volunteer delivers the groceries, the person getting the delivery will give the shopper a check for the amount of the groceries. The orders are to be small…10-12 items or less. If anyone is interested in volunteering, or has any questions regarding this service, please email Carol Sigafoos, the Director of Congregational Care, at: [email protected] Thank you for your willingness to help reach out to our friends and neighbors during this time of need in our church. Blessings, Carol Sigafoos Director of Congregational Care

Post or Read “Digital Sticky Notes” Throughout the Season of Lent, we had been encouraging our congregation to write notes on sticky notes and place them all over the sanctuary. These notes were to be words of how God had been working in our lives through the Lenten Disciplines, as well as the way God had been blessing us and using us to bless others. As we are unable to gather in person, consider this our place for "Digital Sticky Notes." We would love to hear how God is working in and through you, even through times of uncertainty and even isolation. To access the page on Seaside’s website visit www.seasideumc.org, click on the Covid Update graphic, look to the right under the heading “Recent Updates” and click on the Sticky Notes update. Simply scroll to the bottom or the page and use the comment box as your sticky note, and be sure to come back to this page to read the "Sticky Notes" from others!

General Conference Update General Conference will be rescheduled to 2021. Click hereto read the article and announcement that was posted to the North Carolina Conference website on March 23. We will continue to provide Conference updates as they are received.

Lenten Organ Meditation Thursdays in Lent

    Noon—1:00 PM in the Sanctuary

Dear Seaside Family, We continue to adjust in this difficult time. I am amazed at the participation and engagement demonstrated by the staff and congregation of this church. It just continues to prove what I have heard repeated since I arrived on the scene here several months ago. “This is an amazing congregation.” Thank you for your faithfulness and your flexibility as we continue our sensitivity to the threat this virus poses. Yesterday our Bishop sent out another email which affects our initial projection for getting back in the church for worship. In part, this is what she stated: “This morning, I was in zoom conferences with faith leaders, public health professionals and several episcopal colleagues. In addition, with you, I received the directive of Governor Cooper for schools to remain closed through mid-May. I urge you to continue the compassionate practice of not gathering for worship, funerals, weddings, studies, and other groups for the next two months.” So, as it now stands, we have shifted our plans to worshipping together and resuming our “normal” services on May 17. This does not mean that the church is “out of business.” The building is just closed. Over the course of the remaining weeks there are several things that we will be doing to keep ourselves in touch as a congregation. Lenten Disciplines: I believe that it is God’s Prevenient Grace that has placed the Lenten Disciplines in our lives to aid us in this time that we are apart. By continuing to read the scriptures, pray for one another, write letters and make the phone calls, we continue to experience the fellowship we enjoy as the Body of Christ. On-line Worship Services: Hopefully you have been able to enjoy and participate in the on-line video services that we have been sharing on YouTube and Facebook. Granted, these are pre-recorded but Stefanie and Meg have worked very hard to be sensitive to the normal worship times to which we are accustomed. You will receive an email early on Sunday morning and you can participate in worship by viewing it on Facebook. In addition to the worship services, we will be placing certain meditational moments on-line as well. Holy Week & Easter: If matters continue as it presently appears, we will not be able to join together during Holy Week or Easter at the church as we would prefer. Please rest assured that we are exploring the best possible plan we can utilize so that we can worship during this important time in our life of faith. Congregational Care: Our Congregational Care Team has continued our weekly meetings via Zoom video conferencing. There are many people who have stepped up to make phone calls regarding health and wellness for those who are alone and vulnerable. While these persons are valuable and their willingness to serve is very much appreciated, it is important to remember that each of us, lay and clergy alike, are part of the congregational care of this congregation. Please take the initiative to check on one another and let Carol Sigafoos (585-749-2576) know if there are special needs that you discover. One excellent way to check on one another is by calling our prayer partners that we received on the second Sunday of Lent. Committee Meetings & Classes: We continue to explore video conferencing so that we can once again establish our routine for committee meetings and classes. Continue our Faithfulness in Giving: Because of your financial support Seaside is able to: · Continue our ministries of congregational care, reaching out to those in our family of faith who are in need of connection and care during this unique time. · Support Seaside’s staff who continue with the daily operations of the church, being creative in keeping Seaside connected, and work toward the day we worship together in person. To assist you in this endeavor, especially since we are in a season of remote worship, you may mail your offering to the church at 1300 Seaside Road, SW, Sunset Beach, NC 28468 or set up on-line giving or automatic withdrawal by contacting Seaside's Financial Secretary, Wayne Matthews (910-575-4267). Wayne continues to monitor Seaside's financial health. Once again, thank you for your faithfulness. Please continue to pray for our church, our leaders, those who are affected by this virus and one another in the hopes that this will soon pass and we can gather in person. Still in One Peace, Francis

    Ways to Communicate and Worship

As we continue to follow guidance from our Bishop and Governor regarding “social distancing” over these next few months, new ways of keeping in touch with each other and worshipping remotely as a church family are so important.

Sunday Worship and Special Videos: YouTube: We are video recording the sermon and posting it to our new Seaside YouTube channel. Open the YouTube app , type Seaside United Methodist Church in the search bar and once you find our YouTube Channel, you can "Subscribe" and then be notified anytime we upload any new content. They will also, as long as the technology is working correctly, post to the church's Facebook page. Please note: Because YouTube is a free service, we cannot control what ads may play before any of the videos we post or promote. The ads that appear are controlled by YouTube and in no way are endorsed by Seaside UMC. Email: Early on Sunday morning, you will receive an email with the complete worship service, including scripture, call to worship, links to the worship music that you would have heard if we worshipped together in person—in other words, the complete worship service with a link to the sermon.

Special Emails and Updates from the Pastors: If you receive Seaside’s Thursday “Currents” email, you will automatically receive all special emails and updates. If you are not receiving Seaside’s weekly Thursday “Currents” email and would like to, please either email Meg

at [email protected] and provide your preferred email address and name, or visit our website at www.seasideumc.org and complete the pop-up box that asks if you would like to receive our weekly email.

Facebook: Seaside UMC has a Facebook page with all sermons and special videos posted as soon as they post to YouTube.

Texting: Your Seaside Staff wants to stay in touch with you as best as possible during this time of "social distancing." We have the ability to send text messages to you, if you would like. Please note that You must opt in to receive them. Signing up for text updates is simple. Just text the word "START" to 910-490-2216. You will then receive an automated reply letting you know that we received your request. You can also stop them by opting out.

Telephone: Seaside’s Congregational Care team and staff continue to reach out to those members of our church family that are homebound or most vulnerable. Keep in mind that each of us is a member of Seaside’s Congregational Care team and have the ability to make a difference in someone’s life by a simple phone call. During this time of spending our days at home, a sense of fear or loneliness can become overwhelming to those who live alone, are facing illness or experiencing grief over a loss. Caring for each other as members of the Body of Christ can make all the difference in someone’s life, and it will make a difference in ours. Keep in touch with members of your Ministry Teams, Committees, Sunday School Classes, etc. Need a phone number? Download the Instant Church Directory app to your mobile device. When you are prompted to enter an email address, use the email address that you have listed in the church directory. You can also access the Directory by visiting our website at www.seasideumc.org, click on the “About Us” tab, and click on the Directory link.

Some Ways to Reflect & Respond This Easter Even though we will be unable to gather together in person for our Holy Week remembrances and Easter celebration, we are working on some ways that you can engage in your worship through reflection and response:

Good Friday Cross: Each year at our Good Friday Noon worship service, the congregation is invited into a time of reflection by nailing the nail

that they received on Ash Wednesday into the cross. This nail can represent a number of things: your sins, your past, your regrets, your thankfulness, your commitment, etc. Although we will not be holding our worship service, we will be placing that cross outside the sanctuary doors so that you can still come and take the time to nail your nail into the cross. There will be nails provided in case you either did not receive one on Ash Wednesday or have misplaced yours. We do ask, that if possible, you bring your own hammer. However, we will have one provided with a volunteer on hand to sanitize it after each use. So, we encourage you to come on Good Friday, April 10th, between the hours of 10:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m. to engage in this time of reflection.

Easter Sunrise: We are going to ask everyone to share in a communal time of Easter Sunrise worship by stepping outside (weather permitting...if not, onto their porch or looking out the window) at 6:46 a.m. on

Easter Sunday, and offering a prayer of thanksgiving and resurrection that we will be sending to you. We believe that this time of communal prayer of thankfulness will be a powerful demonstration of our hope and joy in the world, a call of victory that nothing, not Covid-19, and not even death, can defeat God’s children because of what God did on Easter!

Easter Flower Cross: Each year we place a cross outside of our sanctuary doors that people decorate with flowers, resulting in

a beautiful cross that symbolizes the life and beauty that spring from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are going to carry on that tradition and place the cross outside, so that you can come by on Easter Sunday, or anytime that week, and place your flowers on the cross. We will take pictures to share with you as it becomes a beautiful beacon of life and hope.

We continue to make plans for other ways that we will be offering you opportunities for worship during Holy

Week and on Easter Sunday. Stay tuned for more information.

    Discipleship Ministry Opportunities

Greetings everyone, as I sit here at my computer at home, I first want to say I miss you all!! By the time you read this article I don’t know if we will be back together or not. I hope you have taken good care of yourselves and are healthy, and have experienced a powerful move of the Spirit in your lives to comfort and guide you. I know this time has made me appreciate the wonderful life we share at Seaside UMC.

As we look forward to getting back together, I would like you to consider two very important ministry opportunities. First, we are in need of individuals to facilitate small group studies. Whether it be a bible study, book study, Sunday school class or something we have never done before that you would like to try. Please contact Nancy Camino at church 910/579-5753 or by email at [email protected]. After I hear from you, I will schedule a meeting to discuss further plans to implement an exciting variety of study opportunities for us all. Training will be provided for first time facilitators. Thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration.

New Member Companion Program Needs You!

Our second opportunity is becoming a New Member Companion. The Seaside Welcoming Ministry strives to ensure that everyone feels comfortable as we worship together on Sunday Mornings as well as throughout the week. We especially want to provide our newest members with all the information about Seaside that allows them to become fully involved members of our church family. To assist in assimilating new members into the Seaside community, the Welcoming Ministry team is requesting volunteers to become “New Member Companions”. As a New Member Companion, you would commit to walk with new members during their first six months of church membership. New Member Companions would do the following:

Contact and introduce yourself before their scheduled joining date.

Stand with them on Sunday morning during the service as they profess their vows.

Present them with their New Member Bag filled with information about Seaside and answer any questions they may have.

Invite them to share a meal, take part in other church activities, bible study, or ministry group activities. If you would like to become a part of this exciting New Member Companion program, please contact Terry Jones 717/215-9671 or email [email protected] or Patsy Gray 910/363-7903 or email [email protected].

Safe Sanctuary Training Schedule Will Be Updated

    With Changes When Known

Seaside's Safe Sanctuaries policy requires that all those who volunteer in programs with children, youth or vulnerable adults attend Safe Sanctuaries training every five years. In an effort to provide more flexibility in training dates, the following dates have been scheduled: Friday, May 8: 2 PM in Room 222 Tuesday, June 2: 10 AM in Room 222 Thursday, June 11: 2 PM in Room 210 Please sign up in the Gallery. Contact Meg at 910-579-5753 with questions.
