HYPOTHERMIA

The other day we were out running some errands, and I noticed several bike riders out taking advantage of

the clear and dry weather. You know, that day when the temperature was in the 20’s.

Riding in temperatures that are in the mid 30’s at 35 MPH, the wind chill factor is 4 degrees. Temperatures

in the 20’s at 35 MPH the wind chill factor is -20 degrees.

Sitting in my warm vehicle watching the riders go down the street I was wondering if they would recognize

the symptoms of Hypothermia, you know when the body core drops below 95 degrees.

Most riding gear and electric conveniences such as gloves and jackets provide protection against the cold as

we cruise down the road, but regardless of what equipment we have we are all still susceptible to Hypother-

mia. The biggest danger is not knowing or being aware. Hypothermia can be a silent, creeping in killer.

Knowing the symptoms of Hypothermia is helpful, but recognizing them in yourself can be difficult. The

most common ones are shivering, tiredness/exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, slurred speech and

memory loss… huh? What where those again… Joking aside, Hypothermia is a VERY serious condition

and can be life threatening especially when riding a motorcycle.

If you notice ANY of these symptoms take the person/yourself into a warm shelter so you/they can warm up

and rest. Warm beverages can help. No Alcohol. If the symptoms are severe and aren’t alleviated medical

attention may be needed.

Stay Warm Be Safe Have Fun

FROM LISA PEARSON, YOUR CHAPTER EVENT COORDINATOR

Things are progressing nicely with the upcoming swap meet BUT Chapter “X” is still in need of more vendors. To date, no GWRRA member has signed up as a vendor or for

a parts table. YOUR RESPONSE IS NEEDED!

This is the letter I am sending to all of our swap meet vendors this year. Please feel free to pass on this information to any possible vendors you contact. However, please call me when you talk to a possible vendor so I can follow up with them. Please con-

tact me at [email protected] or [email protected].

I have included a Registration form on page 4 of this Newsletter.

Only three weeks left until the 4th annual motorcycle Swap Meet event on January 18th 2014. We only have a couple spaces left. Please let me know if you are interest-ed in reserving a spot. We look forward to having you at our event. In this year’s ven-dor line-up we have: an espresso/specialty coffee wagon, chocolates, honey, Scentsy

JANUARY 2014 Page 5 GOLDWING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER WA-X

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a Great Christmas and best wishes to you for a Happy New

Year.

Looking forward to the new year, we have an opportunity to recruit new riders

and their families into GWRRA and Chapter X. We can do this by always carry-

ing an application on our bike, and starting up conversations with other motorcy-

clists. Remember, a stranger is just someone you haven't introduced yourself to.

At the next monthly gathering I will have applications and pamphlets that you can

put on your bike for those occasions when you meet other motorcyclists.

Remember to check out Michael & Vickie Miller's ride schedule. They have

planned some great rides for us. Be sure to invite other riders on these rides. It's a

great introduction to our organization.

Ride safe and I'll be seeing you " thru the windshield."

TO YOU FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from a motorcycle when he spotted a world-famous

heart surgeon in his shop. The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come take

a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc, can I ask you a ques-

tion”?

The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on a motorcycle.

The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So Doc, look at this en-

gine. I also can open it up, take valves out, fix’em, put in new parts and when I finish this bike

will work just like a new one. So how come I get a pittance and you get the really big money,

when you and I are doing the same work?”

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, whispering to the mechanic….”Try doing it with

the engine running!”

************************************************

I am a believer in looking at things from someone else’s perspective. It will usually turn out to

be a learning (and humbling) experience.

As the New Year begins, I am looking forward to putting together future newsletters. I also look

forward to learning some new things about bike riding, meeting some new members and get-

ting together with old friends in Chapter “X”. I am especially looking forward to some warmer

weather to ride the roads that will take us to new places.

During the next few months of cold weather, bike rides are going to be limited. But that doesn’t

mean members can’t get together, enjoy some memories and plan for the upcoming rides. In

fact, the year will start out by planning and putting on the swap meet on January 18. Vanora

and Dee have graciously reserved their club house for a member appreciation get together on

January 11 hosted by our leaders, Kelley and Connie.

Sending along best wishes for the New Year and looking forward to receiving your input and

articles to make this Newsletter even better.
