Wrapping up ChristmasVolunteering their time gift wrapping at the West Shore Town Centre is a tradition for some, including Alanna Lacharity, 16 of Esquimalt, and View Royal resident Carly Young, 12, who spend their evening raising money for the Girl Guides leading up to Christmas. For a story on the Christmas traditions of other West Shore residents, see Page A6.
Homes evacuated in View Royal

A dozen homes were evacu-ated after a chemical spill occurred outside a residence in the 1500 block of Middle Rd. on the Songhees Nation land.
View Royal fire department and the West Shore RCMP responded to the mobile home park Thursday night and quickly established a perimeter to secure the area, while the Capi-tal Regional District’s hazardous material response team investi-gated the substance.
The tenant was improperly disposing of what appeared to be sodium hydroxide, said Const. Alex Berube. CRD HazMat was still conducting on-site tests at press time to confirm the exact nature of the substance.
Sodium hydroxide, more com-monly known as caustic soda or lye, is an industrial strength detergent.
The evacuated residents were able to return to their homes the same night, and there were no injuries from the spill.
“There is an investigation ongoing in the dumping of the chemical,” said [email protected]

Working Christmas can be a ‘family affair,’ tooAngela CowanNews Gazette staff
Whether or not you actually celebrate Christmas, chances are you regularly get Dec. 25 off from work every year.
It’s a tradition that most of Canada takes for granted, but Santa’s not the only one who pulls an all-nighter on Christ-mas. Police, the fire depart-ment and other emergency services step up again and again, sacrificing family time to keep us all safe.
“Everyone accepts that we run 24-7,” says Ryan Hendren, a charge dispatcher for B.C. Ambulance and a paramedic for 14 years come January. “We’re willing to help as many people as we can. Christmas is no different.”
But just because it’s a work day doesn’t mean it’s ordinary. “Because of the nature of the work we do, (your co-workers are) sort of like your second family,” he says. “Even though everybody’s at work, there’s definitely a family feel to it. Everybody tries to have a bit
of Christmas cheer and tries to pull together a dinner.”
It’s a little disjointed with paramedics running in and out the door all day and night, but there’s still a sense of the holi-day amidst the hubbub.
“I make the best of it,” Hen-dren says. “I come to work and wear a Santa hat and try to keep everybody cheerful.”
Keeping that spirit alive will no doubt be easier now that they’re in a brand-new build-ing on Leigh Road. The switch from an antiquated facility on Jacklin Road was a sorely needed upgrade, he says.
“We went from essentially a small, dark cave to a bright, modern, very spacious, brand spanking new building. It liter-ally has been night and day.
“Our home feels like a very comfortable place to be.”
Though Hendren, 34, lives in Saanich and has worked at dis-patch centres throughout the Victoria region and up Island, he says the West Shore is “defi-nitely home base for us.”
In addition to saving lives and dispatching ambulances,
he has also helped make the holidays better for his co-workers over the years.
“It can be tough on people with younger kids, if they’re not there for Christmas morn-ing. I don’t actually have kids, so for me personally, it’s not as big a deal.”
Hendren and others who don’t have little ones waiting anxiously for Santa’s arrival will often offer to trade shifts, where possible. He’s worked many times on Dec. 25 and it usually comes from trading with someone who wants the day off.
Regardless of family com-mitments, the men and women who have devoted their careers to saving lives and protecting the public take their roles very seriously, and work with dedication every day, holiday or not, Hendren says.
“There are so many people who are so driven to help peo-ple any way they can, and they really deserve recognition for that.”[email protected]
Emergency crew members with no children often work Dec. 25 for coworkers who have families at home

B.C. Ambulance charge dispatcher Ryan Hendren often volunteers to work Christmas day so that fellow dispatchers who have young children can enjoy Christmas morning with their families.
Tips for keeping animals safe over the holidays
Angela Cowan/News Gazette staff
Chris Collis, owner of Glenview and Eagle Rise animal hospitals, educates his clients on holiday hazards to pets with the help of his miniature Australian Shepherd, Gia.
Excess fatty food, large crowds can overwhelm Angela CowanNews Gazette staff
For many pet owners, their furry four-legged friends are bone-afide members of the fam-ily, with presents under the tree at Christmas and even their own stockings.
It’s important to remember that with all the excitement, extra food and decorations, the holidays can bring a handful of unexpected hazards for the ani-mals in the house, from eating improper food to much more serious dangers.
“The most common thing we
see over the holidays is gastro-enteritis, just from getting into things they shouldn’t,” says Dr. Chris Collis, veterinarian and owner of Eagle Rise and Glen-view animal hospitals. “We’ll see upset stomachs up to the risk of pancreatitis just from overin-dulging.”
Turkey drippings, table scraps and leftover bones can make a dog howl with joy, but high fat and rich foods are one of the biggest culprits of the season. Resist the puppy dog eyes and avoid having to clean up more than just wrapping paper scraps.
“It’s really no different than in humans,” says Collis. “If you overindulge, there’s likely going to be a price for that.”
Ensure dogs in particular avoid chocolate and raisins
completely as well, as they can cause more serious, and some-times fatal, effects.
The many varieties of holiday plants look festive, but if there are cats in the house, it may be best to pass if the felines are inclined to nibble.
Holly and poinsettia ingestion can cause mouth irritation, vom-iting, nausea, diarrhea or leth-argy. Mistletoe has the poten-tial to cause cardiovascular problems, but is more likely to cause stomach upset. And many types of lilies are one of the most deadly, with the potential to cause kidney failure in cats, even if they just drink the water out of the vase.
If you’re expecting a lot of company over the holidays, it’s good to know how your pet han-
dles the influx of people. “If your pet is prone to anxi-
ety from the noise and extra activity, like doorbells and lots of people, it’s okay to put them in a quiet room with a favou-rite bed and toy if they’re over-whelmed,” says Michelle Pedro of Island Pet Source. “You can also bring home a meaty bone or a long lasting chew to occupy your dog.”
As for tree decorations, make sure ornaments are firmly affixed, keep electrical cords tucked safely away and avoid leaving out ribbons or bows.
“Nobody uses tinsel anymore, thank goodness, but I’d still be cautious of anything that cats take a particular interest in play-ing with,” Collis says. [email protected]

Make healthy travel choices
The holiday lights are up, casting a warm glow over the streets and sidewalks of the West Shore and inspiring us all to enjoy the best of this Christmas season.
But there are another series of lights we see this time of year that don’t carry such a happy message.
The flashing lights of police cruisers and emergency vehicles serve as an unfortunate reminder that all too many holiday celebrations end in tragedy.
Police on the West Shore and across the province are in the midst of their annual Christmas CounterAttack campaigns, targeting impaired drivers in an effort to keep the roads safe.
The consequences of a single bad choice can haunt you for the rest of your life.
And those bad choices add up to thousands of injuries and dozens of deaths each year as a result of alcohol-related crashes in B.C. The good news is the numbers are decreasing, with the number of fatalities down significantly from just a few years ago.
But there is no acceptable level of carnage on B.C. roads. Each and every one of those crashes represents a tragedy for someone’s family, and the saddest part is that they could all have been easily avoided.
There’s just no reason to take chances with your own or your neighbour’s safety. And don’t kid yourself, if you’ve had too much to drink, no amount of coffee, food or fresh air will make you sober.
So when you’re celebrating the season this year, make sure those celebrations include planning for a safe ride home. Arrange for a designated driver, call a taxi, plan to stay over with friends – anything it takes to prevent adding to the crashes on B.C. roads, not to mention the potential loss of your driver’s licence.
Think of the victims, think of the potential consequences, think of what you would have to tell your family – just please think, and let us all enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

In case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure.
This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert.
These vast 1,500-year-old petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change!” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list.
Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru.
“Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley, joining other TV networks in falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough.
This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who
is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American flag.
The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where
developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use.
China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lame-duck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions.
Between them, the U.S. and China account for
about half of global human-caused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective.
Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media.
“Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period,” the report states.
B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to re-announce their modest efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wide-eyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that
the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production.
And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America.
Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell.
I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on human-caused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes.
Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony.
But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action.
I’ll discuss that next week.Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter

A recent incident in Ottawa, which exposed another military poser, has stuck an emotive chord with Canadians coast to coast, particularly since the poser chose to appear at the National War Memorial, less than 75 metres from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the site of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo’s murder.
However, one only has to attend services at a local cenotaph to find members of so-called veteran’s service organizations wearing self-awarded medals, unearned hazardous skill badges and bogus foreign insignia. Their selfish actions do nothing but insult the gallantry, dedication to duty, integrity, honesty and the sacrifices made by members of Canadian Armed Forces.
We remember the blood, sweat and tears that it took to earn a piece of metal attached to coloured ribbon, a strip of cloth or an embroidered badge, and that is why we get somewhat emotional about them.
Fakery is not flattery, it’s cold, calculated deception with the goal of having one’s self-esteem issues assuaged by basking in the reflected glory of honourable men and women who have selflessly served this great country.
One must ask how many receptions honouring veterans have these fakers been invited to due to their “special status and position of honour “ within their respective groups?
How many have attended sporting events, battlefield pilgrimages, provincial or national conventions? How many of these fakers, embellishers and out-right fraud artists have received thanks for their service by an unsuspecting public?
If the answer is one, then even that is one too many.
As 18th-century British writer Samuel Johnson once said, “Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier or not having been at sea.”

Jesse Roper remembers grip-ping a knotted rope, galloping off a cliff and flinging himself into Matheson Lake.
Every Christmas morning started with a cold swim for the rock’n’roller, who grew up near the lake and biked there on brisk Christmas mornings as a child – he still returns today.
“Matheson Lake every morn-ing to wake myself up. I would try to get my buddies to go, but they didn’t used to go,” he said, laughing. “I rode out there … to a cliff on the far side of the lake. You jump off the rock, reach up a couple knots and it sends you flying out.”
The guitarist, who played Rock the Shores this past sum-mer, says the holidays are a spe-cial time for him. The long-time Metchosin resident is even writ-ing an unconventional Christ-mas song as he looks forward to his traditional dip in the lake.
“Getting a little bit of exercise always creates an appetite and Christmas is about family and eating and this is what it is for me; I like to eat a lot,” he said. “And it’s more spreading love around than pres-ents. Christmas is better than birth-days that way, because it is about everyone (rather) than one person.”
Colwood resi-dent Trudine Wil-son, a lifelong Girl Guides leader who has a number of different traditions for the holidays, looks forward to Boxing Day because of a tra-dition started by her uncle, Win Brown, more than two decades ago.
“He would give me a huge box, and there would be a (wrapped) carrot, an onion, a sweet potato and in the middle was my pres-ent,” she said. “My uncle has passed, but my aunty keeps doing it. Now that I’m married, there is a parcel for my husband in there too.”
She never knew what she was going to unwrap, from turnips to potatoes, and appreciates the tradition her uncle asked her aunt Daisy to continue, in the event he wasn’t there.
“He thought it was the greatest thing to see me open it,” Wilson said. “People actu-ally stayed late until I got my box and laughed when I got a carrot and onion, it is a very good part of our family tradition.”
Leading up to Dec. 25, she spends her days doing what she does all year round, raising money for the Girl Guides – she also helps the Lang-ford Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
A year-long push for funds starts with up to eight Girl Guides per shift doing gift wrap-ping at West Shore Town Cen-tre. Funds raised there help the group pay rent and cover the cost of field trips the rest of the year.
Community is near and dear
to the heart of Langford resident Jaime Adams as well. The Bank of Montreal financial advisor sits on the board for the Help Fill a Dream Foundation, but also has a Christmas tradition she hopes will become entrenched in her family.
Adams learned about the Christmas Spirit Community Dinner from a friend who vol-unteers there. The meal pro-gram serves approximately 800 people on Christmas Day and Adams signed up for a 4 to 8 p.m. shift, hoping it will be the first of many for her and her fam-ily.
“We are trying to make it an annual event, going down to Glad Tidings Church serving Christmas dinner there for (the) homeless and less fortunate,” she said.
“I’m hoping (our daughters) will be willing to do it as a fam-ily. They’re not quite old enough, but in the next coming years we are hoping to do it for the kids to see. It’s eye-opening and makes us realize any problems we have are not really problems at all.”[email protected]

Westshore squad enjoys long break from VIJHL hockey schedule
Don DescoteauNews Gazette staff
As the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season hits the home stretch, bus trips have become a little less ominous for the Westshore Wolves.
The Colwood-based team, firmly positioned in second place in the South Division, is finally learning how to win on the road.
“When we started the sea-son, it seemed like every bus trip we made, we would lose, but we were really good at home,” said Wolves’ head coach Brian Passmore of con-tests against North Division teams.
After losing their first five games north of Mill Bay, the Wolves won their next two (their final true road trip of the season was last Friday against the division-leading Storm in Campbell River, after the ***Gazette’s early holiday deadline).
“We’re getting almost to .500 on the road, so we’ve got that somewhat figured out,” Pass-more said. “Sometimes it’s mental and how you prepare for those games.”
The South-leading Victo-ria Cougars and the Storm
have put distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. The Wolves are the only team that has reasonably kept pace, becoming the third-fastest team to hit the 20-win mark a couple of weeks back.
Westshore has taken points off every team in the league this season, including a big 6-5 win over perennial power-house Victoria. On the other hand, they’ve given up at least one point to every team but Peninsula, a fact Passmore says the top teams haven’t experienced.
Learning how to win on the road, especially against teams with worse records, is something the Wolves need to improve further on as the playoffs draw near, he said. That, and cutting down on the kind of turnovers that force the Cougars to score four or five goals to win.
“You learn from your mis-takes. We’ve gone through our up and downs this season; we just ask that they not make the
same mistakes over and over. And that starts with practice.”
Last week’s win over the Cougars saw both teams fore-check hard and show their speed in a high-flying game. The Wolves impressed by mak-ing the Cougars pay for sloppy play with the man advantage, scoring shorthanded twice in the second period.
Defenceman Rylan Ball, who played 30 games for Cowichan Valley’s BCHL team last year, had his best outing since being signed six games ago by the Wolves, scoring three goals and setting up another. It was another case of someone different coming through for the team at the right time.
“That was a really important game for us,” Passmore said. “The kids all really wanted to win and set the tone for the second half, letting (the Cou-gars) know that coming down the stretch we’ll be right there with them.”
Roster-wise, the team lost productive forward Brett
Lervold to the Cougars last month when he asked for a trade, and Nick Guiney more recently when he was brought up the Victoria Grizzlies.
Westshore added gritty forward James Severs in a deal with Campbell River. Somewhat hidden in the Storm’s potent offence, he’s responded to more ice time by averaging better than two points per game.
Fellow newcomer Christian Brandt has nine points in six games so far.
Passmore said unlike last year, there’s been more player movement in the league, with teams jockeying for position a little earlier. The Wolves will be watching teams like Victoria and potential first-round play-off opponent Kerry Park to see if they move to strengthen their lineups before the Jan. 10 roster deadline.
While he’s happy with the character of his team and sees them heading in the right direction, Passmore said the team wouldn’t hesitate to make a move if the right deal came along.
“(Besides tightening up on defence,) we just want to be harder to play against. We know we’ll get our scoring chances, but we don’t wanna get into those 6-5 and 7-6 games like we did the other night. It’ll be more like 2-1 and 3-1 in the playoffs.”
The Wolves return from their Christmas break with a Jan. 7 game at home against Comox [email protected]

Don’t Retire VisionYou don’t have to worry about running out
of vision. It’s not like you can use it up and then there is no more left. As long as the eye is healthy it will pick up visual signals and transmit them to the brain to be interpreted. It will go on doing this indefinitely without ever quitting.
The muscles of the eye, on the other hand, can become fatigued. Long periods of con-centrated reading or close work may weary them to the point where they just cannot go on responding to the demands put on them. The need a temporary rest. It is this feeling of the eye fatigue which has let to the myth that vision can be “worn out”. The sad thing about this is that many older people voluntarily limit the use of their eyes. They cut back on their reading, sewing and television watching for fear of losing their remaining eyesight. Well, there’s no reason to retire vision. With good health and suitable vision aids, there are no limits to what you can see.
And, in fact, the one person you should make a point of seeing on a regular basis is your Optometrist.

Boxing Day Recycling Reminder
We Recycle on Boxing DayIf your blue box collection day falls on Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, your curbside materials will be collected as usual. Please place your recyclables at the curb by 7:30 am in appropriate sized containers. For more information, please call the CRD Hotline at 250.360.3030 or visit www.crd.bc.ca
One New Year’s resolution we’ll all be making.A full disposal ban on kitchen scraps at Hartland landfill takes effect January 1, 2015. The ban will divert compostable items like vegetables, meat, bones, grains, dairy products, fruit and soiled paper that currently take up thirty percent of the landfill. At the same time, diverted kitchen scraps will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will be processed into beneficial compost. So contact your waste hauler or municipality directly, plan for collection options and make a note on your calendar. Then we can all look forward to a happy, more sustainable New Year! For general information about the kitchen scrap diversion strategy visit www.crd.bc.ca/kitchenscraps

Reader Photo of the WeekColwood resident Doug
Morris was able to snap this gem of a photo while wandering the wilds of Esquimalt Lagoon recently.
This trumpeter swan, spreading its wings and fluffing his feathers by the waterside was “keeping warm, no doubt,” said Morris.
If you’ve got a photo from the West Shore of people places or things and want to share it with our readers, the Goldstream News Gazette can help you out with that. Every Wednesday, we publish our pick for Reader Photo of the Week. To have your photo considered for publication, simply email us a high-resolution .jpg copy to [email protected].
Please include your name, contact information including municipality of residence, where you took the photo and what
you like about the image. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Fridays to be included for consideration for the following week’s paper.
Weekly winners will also be posted on the Gazette’s Facebook page. Good luck!

Photo shows attendees at a fair at the old community hall in Metchosin, circa 1926. The hall was the site of the annual family Christmas concert and dance.Courtesy Metchosin Museum Society
Metchosin’s pre-eminent historian and raconteur, Daisy Bligh, recalled in a 1988 Gold-stream Gazette article that the school con-cert and arrival of Santa Claus were the highlights of her year back in 1926.
Preparations started months beforehand and the day itself became a familiar rit-ual. The morning was easy on school work, as the students and teachers would decorate the community hall with stencils and chalk, and the tree with real candles. The children would be sent home at lunch with the expectation to nap so as to be rested for the evening festivities.
Washed and dressed in their finest, they would return to the hall to be met by mothers who would put them into costumes and make up their faces with grease paint. Every child, even the youngest, would have a part to play in the performances.
Recitations of poetry, dances,
solo and group songs, including the audi-ence singing along, would wind down. Bells would be heard in the distance, then coming closer as they announced Santa’s arrival. With great excitement, everyone would greet and usher the man in red into the hall and at some point, the candles were lit on the tree, making every-thing magical.
Each child received a gift stocking from Santa that came with a candy cane on top and a Japanese orange in the toe. A great puzzle for Daisy was that Santa changed from year to year; some years he was fat and some years he was tall and thin.
After the concert and gift giving, the adults would have a dance, but as Daisy’s father “wasn’t much for dancing,” she can’t tell us of that merriment. I expect the dance would be accompanied by local musicians and followed by a “box” supper. More than likely, the gentlemen
would partake of other refresh-ments behind the hall.
Christmas Day for many fami-lies would start with a service at St. Mary’s Church and end with visiting and feasting.
The food may have been richer and more plentiful than usual, but it was not exotic. Daisy recalls that tomatoes were not available at Christmas until 1963 and families had at most two cookbooks – the standard being the Five Roses Flour Cook-book – so there wasn’t much variety, either.
Despite the changes over the years, one thing remains the same: Mandarin or Japanese oranges, individually wrapped in green paper, available only for the season. In 1926, Daisy’s first orange of the season would be from the toe of the Santa stock-ing given at the concert. The family would have one box of the exotic oranges that would be opened only on Christmas morning.
Wendy Mitchell is president of the Metchosin Museum Society. She can be reached by email at [email protected].

Metchosin’s Past
Q: My husband passed away in March of this year. It was unexpected and devestated the entire family. I have been working through my grief and doing well but then the Holidays hit and I find myself quite sad again. Do you have any advice on how to cope.
A: The holidays are usually a time for fun and celebration, but when you’ve experienced the loss of a loved one, the festive season can be tough.
For some families, making a few changes to traditional festivities helps everyone to better cope with the absence. For example, if you and your spouse always had a big tree and lots of presents, even after the kids left home, instead try a simple wreath and a few well-chosen gifts, or make a donation to charity in your family’s name. If dinner is always at your house, ask another family member to entertain this year.
Throughout the season, make an effort to accept invitations to holiday events. You may be surprised by how an evening out can lighten your spirits even while you are missing someone special.
If you are concerned with the prospect of facing long, empty days, then why not share your time with others while doing some good? Volunteer at your local food bank, church group or homeless shelter. You’ll feel the warmth of good company, and your help will be appreciated.
You may find some solace in acknowledging your loss at this special time by embracing the good memories, rather than focusing on the grief
Please email me ([email protected]) your questions and/or concerns aboutanything and everything to do with before and after death procedures, legalities, traditions etc. and I will do my best to answer them.
