Teachers ramp up job action after rejecting offer

Tom FletcherBlack Press

Students in the Sooke School District are looking at a second straight long weekend, with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s rotat-ing one-day strikes set to include SD62 next Monday.

District superintendent Jim Cambridge said letters went home with all West Shore students Tuesday informing parents that schools will be closed May 26 due

to escalating teachers job action.“Principals will be there to

ensure the safe operation of schools, but there will be no (classes), no after-school pro-grams and no programs such as Strong Start (for children up to age 5),” he said.

“Presumably, it’s back to busi-ness as usual for classes on the Tuesday (May 27) … we’ll see if it continues the following week.”

The BCTF action follows its rejection of the province’s offer of a $1,200 signing bonus for reach-ing an agreement by the end of the school year.

Union president Jim Iker said this week the bonus doesn’t make up for the government’s

wage offer of 6.5 per cent over six years. A simultaneous plan to cut teacher wages by five per cent or more because of strike action is “just so disrespectful, so unneces-sary, and we’ll be dealing with it at the Labour Relations Board,” Iker said.

Unless there is some compro-mise on major issues, one-day strikes with picket lines will be staged at one group of school dis-tricts in each of the first four days next week.

Education Minister Peter Fass-bender said the bonus, and reduc-ing the contract term from 10 years to six, were significant efforts to move toward a settlement.

“Unfortunately the announce-

ment today says that the BCTF feels that disrupting classrooms, affecting children and their fam-ilies is going to help to reach a settlement,” he told reporters in Vancouver.

Iker reiterated the union’s posi-tion that more pay, more teachers and a return to contract language guaranteeing class size and spe-cial needs support are needed to reach a settlement.

Peter Cameron, chief negotia-tor for B.C.’s 60 school districts, informed the union last week that a five-per-cent pay cut will be put in place “soon” in response to the first phase of strike action.

The BCTF began work-to-rule action in April, refusing supervi-

sion outside classrooms and com-munication with school manage-ment. Rotating strikes were also authorized by the BCTF member-ship in a March vote. Beginning to shut down schools could result in an effort to cut teacher pay by 10 per cent.

Still time to send in your choice for Great TeachersDon DescoteauNews staff

Over the past six weeks, we’ve spoken with numerous people about the role of school teachers and the positive impact they have in our communities.

Through a series of stories pub-lished in Black Press’ community newspapers, we’ve prompted read-ers to think about the excellent edu-cators in their schools and nomi-nate them for recognition through our Great Teachers campaign.

Co-presented by Staples’ School

Tools and supported by Thrifty Foods, Great Teachers is a way of honour-ing individuals who are making a differ-ence with their work inside and outside the classroom.

“We are in the final days of the cam-paign and we’d like to encourage par-ents and others to nominate a special teacher,” said Black Press group publisher Penny Sakamoto. “It’s not too late. It’s a great way to end the school year and concentrate on the positive impact of teachers and how schools are the core of com-

munity life.”Readers nominat-

ing teachers at vic-news.com/contests have used such words as “positive relationship,” “sig-nificant impact,” “patient and kind,” “leader” and “above and beyond” to describe nominees. The submissions are inspiring and indi-cate the high regard

in which teachers are held.Ralf Mundel, senior director of

marketing and communications for Thrifty Foods, says teachers are “vital to the fabric of our com-munities” and help kids become

rounded individuals.“Think back on your childhood,

or ask your kids about their most impactful memories and generally something about a teacher ranks high on that list. That’s powerful,” he says.

For Thrifty’s, which frequently supports community groups at the grassroots level, being part of initiatives such as Great Teachers is something “interwoven into our DNA since 1977,” Mundel adds.

Staples is familiar with the extra work teachers do to make their lessons special, says School Tools (staplesschooltools.ca) co-ordina-tor Harmen Berghuis.

“I think they deserve all the rec-ognition we can give,” he says.

OUR VIEW

Take advantageof biking weather

The recent pleasant temperatures in Greater Victoria have prompted many people to haul their bicycles out of the storage shed and put on a few extra kilometres.

With Bike to Work Week upon us – it officially runs Monday to Sunday (May 26 to June 1) – now is the opportunity to test your stamina and your travel route into town from the West Shore.

Colwood Coun. Judith Cullington, who regularly bikes down to city hall from her home, was cheerily on the losing end of the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week commuter challenge on Wednesday against cyclist Randy Scott. The pair started from Colwood Corners and made their way to the Starbucks at Blanshard and Fort streets downtown.

Scott got there in a cool 24 minutes, edging Cullington by a few minutes.

He was one of 17 cyclists, including a perfect three-for-three who started from the West Shore, who finished ahead of their driving counterparts. The drivers also had to find parking at the end of the route and only six won the race.

The annual test is a way to show commuters heading downtown that if traffic tie-ups are your biggest complaint, jumping on the bike and cruisin’ down the Galloping Goose – if you live on the West Shore – is an option to consider.

It’s a chance to have fun, get some exercise, save a few bucks or more on gas. This year’s 20th annual event will see more than 550 teams participating, many of which are based out here.

No doubt more than a few individuals will make the switch and figure out ways to make cycling more a part of their daily routine.

According to Victoria’s Vital Signs, 5.9 per cent of commuters did so on their bike in 2011, compared to 1.3 per cent nationally. Then again, we cycle more often because we can.

For people using the Goose to get into town from the West Shore, why not give yourself a little pat on the back for taking a green and heathy initiative? A Bike to Work Week celebration station with goodies will be set up on Tuesday (May 27) from 4 to 6 p.m. on the trail, opposite the entrance to Royal Roads.

You don’t have to be Ryder Hesjedal out there, just enjoy the fresh air and exercise.

YOUR VIEW

Re: Cruelty in the eye of the beholder (Our View, May 14)

Your editorial claiming that rodeo animals are not treated cruelly not only flies in the face of common sense, but also of expert opinion.

The B.C. SPCA opposes rodeo, along with the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and the national SPCAs of the United States, Australia and New Zealand. These are the professional agencies we entrust with the protection of animals and they have all determined that rodeo is inhumane.

Are you seriously claiming that you have a better understanding of rodeo than these organizations?

Peter Frickercommunications director

Vancouver Humane Society

Reader disputesanimal athlete claim

Re: Cruelty in the eye of the beholder (Our View, May 14)

I was disappointed to read this article on the editorial page. I understand that horseback riding, ranching and farming has been, and still is, a staple of life in rural areas and that this provides many of us with food for our tables.

What I don’t understand is how wrenching a young calf running at a full gallop off its feet with a rope around its neck can be called “sport.” I don’t believe that these young cows are in any way “professional athletes” as you ridiculously claim.

Just because something has

always been done, it doesn’t mean it isn’t time for a change. I did not attend the Luxton rodeo.

By the way, I noticed that no one from your newspaper claimed this article as their own. I wonder if perhaps they were ashamed?

Animals in rodeosare subject to stress

Re: Cruelty In The Eye Of The Beholder (Our View, May 14)

The author of the editorial was correct when they said, “It’s easy to form a negative opinion of someone else’s behaviour or way of life.” This was evident by ads printed in the Luxton Rodeo program which described those who are against rodeo with words like “evil” and “losers.” Then there were the rodeo fans who offered insulting comments to protestors at the entrance to the fair.

Historical significance, financial benefits and all the other rationalizations for the rodeo do not negate one irrefutable fact: when a calf bolts from the chute, it is intensely stressed, filled with fear and subject to injury. That they are well cared for prior to, and after the event, is an aside from the issue.

The rodeo defends itself by saying that injuries and deaths don’t happen often. But many

internal injuries such as organ bruising, hemorrhaging and cracked or fractured ribs can go undetected. Just one death, in the name of entertainment, should be too much.

Animal behaviourists and biologists are in agreement, rodeo events are harmful to animals. In the past decade, the world has evolved toward a new understanding that animals actually do have emotions and suffer when they are severely frightened and in pain. That any animal should suffer in the name of sport and entertainment is unacceptable in a Canadian society.

In the past year, our country has banned the use of battery crates to raise chickens and gestation crates for pigs. As Canadians, our compassion and respect for life is such that we insisted that chickens and pigs be raised without suffering, even though they’ll end up on our dinner plate.

Essentially, Langford council needs to address a question of ethics. Do we have a right to subject an animal to a high degree of stress, fear and risk of injury or death for a few seconds of entertainment and the chance for a cowboy to win money and fame?

Apartment residents evacuatedafter police find makeshift bomb

Leadership students from Belmont secondary school are hosting a barbecue fundraiser tomorrow (May 24) to raise money for Zack Downey, a Grade 12 boy from Langford with terminal cancer.

Leadership teacher Danielle Hucalak, who taught Downey in Grade 8, was approached by a parent with an idea of doing something for the Downey family, who are seeking alternative therapies for Zack that are not covered by health care.

The barbecue is by donation and takes place at Select Mortgages, 3212 Jacklin Rd. at Sooke Road, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Don DescoteauNews staff

A quiet holiday morning was broken for some residents of a Colwood seniors apartment building, who were evacuated Monday after police found a pipe bomb in a suite.

Officers from West Shore RCMP and Victoria Police Department were at Colwood Lodge, 85 Belmont Rd., to talk to a suspect in an unrelated weap-ons investigation when they found the homemade bomb. The 9 a.m. visit stemmed from a Sunday night incident in town that was reported to VicPD.

Residents of surrounding suites were kept out of their apartments while police waited for Explosives Disposal Unit offi-cers to arrive from Vancouver.

“Any time we find something of that nature we will take pre-cautions to ensure public safety,”

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz said of the decisions to evacuate and call in the bomb squad. “The reality is they can cause significant damage.”

A 59-year-old Colwood man was arrested at the scene and taken to West Shore RCMP detachment. He appeared in Western Communities Provin-cial Court on Tuesday morning to face a charge of possession of an explosive device.

That’s not the only trouble the suspect is in.

VicPD spokesperson Const. Mike Russell said Tuesday they are recommending one charge of uttering threats in relation to the Sunday incident, along with nine counts of careless storage of a firearm or ammunition.

Outside the apartments on Tuesday, resident John McK-inney said the man taken into custody is known in the building for loading his own ammunition,

but Russell couldn’t confirm whether that was related to the recommended charges.

McKinney, an ex-navy muni-tions expert who lives on the fourth floor, described the man as “a nice enough guy” whom he spoke to on occasion. He said the man had moved into the building within the past year.

Kaye Melliship, executive director of the Greater Victoria Housing Society, which operates Colwood Lodge, called the inci-dent “pretty extraordinary,” add-ing she knew of no documented complaints from residents about the man.

“Tenants communicate to us if there are people who are intimi-dating or threatening,” she said, noting society staff inspect the suites annually. “Unless they do something that our caretaker or another tenant notices, they live their lives quietly.”[email protected]

Goldstream Station Market this summer at Veterans’ Memorial Park! Our Farmers’ Market has a new location, a new vibrancy and an exciting blend of new and returning vendors offering more products than ever!

Formally situated on Bryn Maur Road the Goldstream Station Market feels that the park will provide them with a great surrounding for family to come engage with the market.

“Kids can play in the park while Mom and Dad do some shopping at the market,” says Sarah Shasko, one of the many vendors you will see on a Saturday morning, “we will also have live music and you will feel a different vibe this year based on the new venue”

The Goldstream Station Market has local fruits and vegetables, bedding plants and owers, fresh-baked breads and goodies. In addition to all these great products they also boast local cheese and yogurt, jams and preserves, gluten-free products, pies and tarts, local honey, salsas and specialty foods. Those of us looking for pottery, handcrafted soaps and beauty products, homemade textiles and paper crafts, jewelry, and artisan crafts will not be disappointed - all in a beautiful and relaxing park setting.

New this year is the addition of food trucks - we will have a variety of trucks of all sizes

throughout the season.

The season starts on Saturday May 24 from 10am - 2pm and runs every Saturday through October 25, rain or shine. Everything at the Market is handmade, homemade or homegrown - all by the vendor or their family!

“Ever long to return to the time when you knew the baker by name, or you could stop and chat with the farmer about the weather?” says Shasko, then come to the Market and meet the person who grew your food, made your bread or crafted your gifts.

Support local while enjoying the feeling of community where you know everyone’s name.”

There’s plenty of free parking available along Station and Atkins Avenues, as well being within easy walking distance from the many great stores

along Goldstream Avenue. The Market is also easily accessible by bike, trolley and bus!

Enjoy live music in the bandstand, a picnic of fresh market produce, meet friends for lunch in the sunshine, or hang out and watch your kids play in the playground. There will even be a water park added this summer to help beat the heat! Join us on Saturdays at the Market in the Park!

The power of four was unstoppable for a team of Langford Lanes bowlers who rolled to a B.C. championship in Bowl Canada’s National Classified tournament.

Brad Macdonald, Francis Kremler, Todd Jones and Brad Monette held off challengers from the Lower Mainland to score the overall victory May 10 at Town and Country Bowl in Vancouver and qualify for the national tournament, June 21 and 22 in Saskatoon.

“The guys are pretty excited,” said Jones, who was the top bowler in his average category (151-170) at provincials. “I mean, this is the first time for three of us at this level,

but Brad (Macdonald) has been there before.”

The Langford foursome found themselves up by less than 100 pins heading into their fifth and final game of the day. By the mid-point the host Town and Country team had virtually caught up.

“We all bowled really well when it got really

close,” Jones said. “We were pretty well tied coming into the last frame, but we all marked in the 10th.”

Macdonald, the highest-average bowler on the team competing in the 191-up division, finished with three straight strikes and wound up winning his category with a five-game total of 1,175.

The Langford team totalled 3,756 while Town and Country took second with 3,704. McCurdy Bowling Centre from Kelowna was also close, finishing third at 3,700, while the other Island squad competing, from Duncan Lanes, placed fifth at 3,151.

Monster trucks roll into LangfordTonight and tomorrow (May

23 and 24) monster trucks Rock Star and the California Kid bring their car-crunching power to Western Speedway in Langford.

The huge-tired beasts, regu-lars on the Monster-X Tour, share a card both nights with the demo cars and trucks, bomber cars, mini figure 8s and Capital City Drifting. Qualifying starts at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting underway at 6:30.

On Sunday, the South Island Straight Liners Racing Associa-tion drags run from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Visit sislra.ca for information.

Trevor Montgomery finished off a busy night of racing at the track May 17 by capturing the checkered flag in the 15-car main event for sprint cars. He beat out Mark Stuart, Lance Wade and Chris Root, in that order.

Montgomery had won the first heat race, while Mike Haslem took the second heat race and Guy Barrett the trophy dash. Dave Emmerson had posted the fast qualifying lap time of 16.038 seconds.

In stock cars, Kevin Knight took top spot in the 12-car main,

beating out second-place finisher Kyle Cottam, Brian Clutchey in third and Dean Mackeney in fourth. Knight also won the first heat, Cottam the second heat and fast time (18.519 seconds) and Clutchey the trophy dash.

Mini-stocker Sean Constantine took first in the main event ahead of Alex Mouner, who had set the fast time of 19.076 seconds and finished second behind Con-stantine in the heat race. Justin Woodske won the trophy dash ahead of Constantine.

Daryl Cahill and Tristan Gait shared honours in the Hornet class, with Cahill taking the main event and fast time (20.13 sec-onds), while Tait won the heat race and trophy dash.

Larry Joyce won the main event and the heat race among the Old Time Racers. George Jenson finished second in both, after winning the trophy dash, while Joe Dardengo recorded the fast time of 18.193 seconds.

Safety Tip:As high school seniors prepare for graduation, it’s important that parents make sure their teens are also planning for a side ride home after all of their festivities. Grads often treat themselves to limousine rides but make sure

they have a plan if they’ll be going to any other celebrations.

Restoring a rare Mustang to magnifi cenceEverybody remembers their first car but very few people hold onto that set of wheels long into adult life.Tsawwassen resident Laura Ballance still has her 1967 Ford Mustang T5 but it has not turned a tire in years and has fallen into a state of disrepair. The public relations executive’s passion for automo-biles began at an early age, growing up in a house-hold with a father who was very interested in cars and particularly the Ford marque. By age four, she already knew what a Ford Mustang was and, as she approached 16, she wanted to own and drive one.

“In the mid-80s my father and I started looking for

a Mustang to restore together and in 1986 I found a ‘67 Mustang in the local paper,” says Laura, the pres-ident of the Laura Ballance Media Group.“The next day, we went to Surrey to look at the ‘67 notchback

that was for sale for $600. My dad negotiat-ed it for $450

and we began working nights and weekends restoring it. My dad was not a body man or mechanic and was self-trained but was handy, so we figured it out as we went along. “I spent many hours passing tools to my dad as he worked on the car. It is some of the best hours of my life, true quality time with my dad. I official-ly received the car as a graduation present.” Laura drove the car throughout grade 11 and 12 and during her early years as a journalist.“Eventually I purchased a new car and my Mustang went into storage as old cars often do. I got married, had children and a 1967 Mustang wasn’t conducive to car seats and strollers. “The 50th anniversary of the Mustang coincides with my oldest daughter receiving her driving license in 2014, so for the past five years I’ve been looking for someone or a compa-ny to restore my Mustang.”One of her clients, Jason Heard, of the Vancouver Classic Car Show and Sale, recommended 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford. The boys at 360 are now working their magic on this rare car and Laura will

get her wish to parade the beauty at upcoming Mustang 50th anniversary celebrations. The car will have its grand unveiling at the Vancouver Collector Car Show and Auction at the Pacific National Exhibition grounds in June.Over the next few weeks, we will reveal that this is not just any Mustang (one of only 453 built in 1967) and walk you through its restoration pro-cess. One that is a daunting experience for many seasoned car collectors let alone a proud mother with a passion for her old car. The world of automo-tive restoration is fraught with prob-lems; the one that comes to mind is the final invoice. An old rule of thumb for the realists has been to get an estimate and then double or triple it!

We will see how this exciting project plays out between now and mid-June.

Monte Carlo, Monaco: Everywhere you look, wealth abounds. The parking spaces in front of the Hotel de Paris and Casino Monte Carlo, Monaco, are filled with vehicles no less than $200K. I feel a lot out of place.Ferraris, Maseratis, Bentleys, Porsches, Bugattis (yes plural) and other exotic vehicles seem to be a dime a dozen.Even the taxis are premium makes and models. The occasional “affordable” vehicle (like a 3 Series BMW or an Audi A5) manifests itself, but they already know they won’t be getting the premiere parking spots. So how do you get noticed in an area where such opulent sheet metal resides? A place where spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a vehicle is the unwritten rule, and even that might not be enough for a second glance. The answer is simple: the 2015 Ducati Diavel. You can hear one coming from a mile away (sorry, 1.60934 kilometres if we are to be continentally correct). The devilish Ducati, even with the stock exhaust – which is new for the 2015 model year – could easily conjure sinister thoughts. The low-note grumble and throaty belligerence characterizes the twin pipes that are aggressive yet sublimely pleasing to the ears. Now imagine am-plifying that sound by more than 30.A flock of carbon white-trimmed Diavels set out to congregate in the main plaza of Monte Carlo where our

press briefing would take place. On the way, the adventure took us through a section of the F1 Grand Prix track; hairpins, winding roads and silky smooth tarmac paved the way. For a moment, I felt like a champion. The Bologna-based brand’s revised sport cruiser is one that commands attention. Even if you don’t want to look, its black hole-like nature won’t let your gaze escape. Besides, you’ve already been hooked by its exhaust note and the mellifluous sound from its 1,198 cc engine, so it’s too late to even attempt to look away.Within moments of parking these bikes, crowds amassed. Never mind the Porsche GT2 RS a few metres away. Never mind the Ferrari Califor-nia with pristine paint and glimmering rims. Ducatis steal all the attention.Styling-wise, they have matured since

its introduction in 2012. Though it is immediately recognizable, it has been tweaked. There’s now full LED illumination, a new headlamp cover and mounting and more. Giving it the strong road presence that it has is its commanding and bulbous body, matched with a 240 rear tire; a tire that was specifically made in conjunction with Pirelli for the Diavel.Though it might look like a handful, it’s not. And if a “handful” was mea-sured in weight, you’re only looking at, or handling, 205 kg (452 lbs.)Speaking of hands, its handling is quite superb. Taking on the twisty roads won’t leave you scraping pegs like other cruisers. With three modes (sport, touring and urban) to channel the 162 horsepower (100 hp if you’re in urban mode) from Ducati’s new Testastretta 11° DS engine, it won’t take off on you without your consent. With crowds taking photos of this beautiful beast, and asking to take a photo with it, I couldn’t see any other vehicles generating such fervor. It gen-erates even more zeal when on the open road. But for now, the temporary celebrity status that these bikes bring are a welcome change from the norm. And knowing that an item that costs at least 10 times less than the vehicular ornamentation perfectly placed in Monte Carlo – the Diavel carbon white model has an MSRP of $21,995) could be considered cheap thrills, right?I guess it’s all relative.

As a busy mom and running my own business as a counsellor at “Insight to Action Counselling Services”, I need to have a reliable vehicle and also access to a loaner vehicle when work is being done to my car.My family has purchased two vehicles from Galaxy Motors. One for myself and one for my husband after he was in an accident that wrote off his previous car.I have found the staff to be professional and friendly and also ef cient. They have a great service center that provides thorough explanations of the work being done and future work that may be necessary. The staff is not pushy on the sales side OR in the service department.I also appreciated that there was an insurance person there when we purchased so that we didn’t have to run around town.”

BMW X5:Changes stable but significantThis all-new BMW X5 is the latest version of the mid-sized luxury SUV that helped the manufactur-er expand into markets beyond those where luxury, performance sedans reside. Some younger readers might not remember a time when BMW, and other German makers, didn’t have SUVs. But it wasn’t too long ago that the original X5 came out and transformed the Bavarian automaker into more of a full-line man-ufacturer. Ever since they started making SUVs, their sales have not retreated.

As is stands right now, the X5 combines two classes of SUV, the mid-size five-seat market and the seven-seat market. Truth be told, this should really be looked at as a five-seater, there will be a new, bigger seven passenger BMW coming in the next year or so.LooksWhen you look at this new model, it is instantly recognizable with just small changes such as more accent lines. I had a chance to park it next to the smaller X3 and, other than the front grille and headlights, they share a striking resemblance to

each other, this is just a bigger version of that wildly popular SUV. All X5 models come standard with 19-inch wheels but BMW packages their products to be offered with bigger wheels depend-ing on whether they want the sport package or not. Around the back, the same clamshell lift gate found on the last two versions remains intact. The top flips up and the bottom drops down. It makes it a reach to get inside the cargo area but many owners like this feature for sliding items in and out and being able to sit on the tailgate. InsideThe inside of the X5 is a study in small changes that pay big dividends. The centre screen is huge, the iDrive controller is bigger and navigating around this system is much easier than it has been in past versions. The materials used inside the cabin are first rate. The wide and relatively flat dash makes the cabin feel huge and the big comfortable seats make for an effortless place to spend time. As mentioned, the X5 can be equipped with a third row of seats but they are not that great for space, the GL-Class from Mercedes is a better option. When equipped with five seats the cargo space is vast. DriveThere are three different version of the X5, two that are very popular and the V8 version that is almost overkill. My test unit was the Xdrive 50 and it’s powered by a twin-turbo-charged 4.4L V8 engine. This produces a whopping 445hp and 479 lb.-ft. of

torque. And this thing flies, it is so fast and stable, it makes this big rig dance in every situation. In addition, there are various driving modes that set up the en-gine’s response, the steering feel and the suspension stiffness. Even in the most relaxed setting, this V8 en-gine is always up to a quick passing manouevre. Yes this is a blast to drive but 445hp is maybe too much. For gasoline buyers the 3.0L six-cylinder turbo model is more practical. With 300hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, the XDrive 35 can make a run to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds. Not bad for a 6-cylinder. The XDrive 35d turbo diesel should prove to be the most popular. The 3.0L diesel has 413 lb.-ft. or torque and sips fuel. The diesel X5 can make a run to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds but achieves just 8.7L/100km in mixed city and highway driving. All models come with an eight-speed automatic to help get the most out of each litre of fuel.VerdictX5 models can be equipped with several different pack-ages like sport packages, luxury packages and more. So starting at $63,000 and up, the base price can be a bit misleading. This is an expensive product but a superbly well designed and engineered one. To be honest, other than the price, there is a lot to like here, this is a great BMW. It is so well put together, it drives superbly and it comes with three equally good engines. If you are in the market for a big luxury SUV, the new X5 does a lot right.

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model was first conceived in 2008 but still looks very futuristic. It is one of 17 concept cars from across Eu-rope and the US to be displayed at “Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas” at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The GINA Light Visionary Model features a virtually seamless outer skin, consisting of a flexible fabric material stretched over

a movable substructure. Furthermore, functions are only enabled when they are actually needed. The most striking example of this is the headlight design. In normal position, when the headlights are not active, they are hidden under the special fabric cover. As soon as the driver turns on the lights, the contour of the front end changes.

The words performance and Volvo rarely appear in the same sentence but the new 2015 V60 Sportswagon R-Design should change the perception that the Swedish manufacturer is only capable of producing reli-able and safety conscious products to the exclusion of excitement. This performance oriented T6 AWD version pumps out 325 horsepower, topping the base T6 by 25 horses and a massive 75 more than the four-cylinder and fuel efficient base T5.A week aboard this wagon showed it to be a very sporty machine on the high-way and at its utilitarian best in the city.Combine some paddle shift action with the auto trans-mission in Sport mode and you can push the car from zero to 100 klicks in about six seconds. Taking the V60 at speed around the twisties along the Sea to Sky Highway demonstrated its excellent road holding

and handling capabilities, courtesy of corner traction control. Ergonomic seats ensure the driver is also firmly gripped in those corners. Gee, I forgot I was in a Volvo. But before we run away with the idea that Volvo has abandoned what it is best known for; it should be mentioned that there is an option to add the world’s first Cyclist Detection and auto brake technology to the line! That most certainly makes it a Vancouver car, given that city’s love for all-things-cycling.This coupe-like wagon looks good too. A wide grille greets you and the classic Volvo-V shaped sculpted hood is still there but cleaner contemporary styled lines that flow back towards the traditional taillights support it.Inside, the designers drew cues from contemporary Scandinavian furniture, featuring wood and leather. The rear seats fold down in three 40/20/40 segments, adding still more space to

the already generous 430 litres to the rear of the seats. Parents of young chil-dren will like the two-stage pop up integrated booster cushions.Volvo has 60 years of expe-rience producing wagons and that shows in this line. The inclusion of the fun factor in the R-Design ver-sion is a smart move for a company trying to win new friends among affluent car buyers. Make no mistake, these are prestige vehicles with a fitting price tag.The base four-cylinder mod-els start at around $42,000 and the R-Design driven by your truly topped $51,000.I’ve also driven – if briefly – other Volvos equipped with the new Drive-E four-cyl-inder engines, mated to 8-speed auto transmissions, and they are remarkable. They offer a performance more akin to a typical 6. So, give the base models a shot if you are not looking for a pulsating ride in a Volvo. Did I just say that?

Tucked away on the top of Saan-ich Mountain sits an unimaginably cool home.

A break in the firs off Old West Saanich Road opens to its curious three-storey spherical structure. That this place was envisioned and expertly crafted by one man in the ‘70s is cool, but that it still revolves at the flick of a switch – unimagin-ably so.

The owners reject the notion of selling the piece of local history. If the family were to put it on the market, as with any unique home, however, they would be facing cer-tain challenges.

“Unique means just that, and you need a unique buyer,” says Greater Victoria Real Estate Board president-elect Guy Crozier. “Value is directly related to supply and demand. If you have a lower demand, it could mean a lower value or a long search for the unique buyer for a unique home.”

The visionary behind the house bears a family name well-known in the area: Basil “Barney” Oldfield. Though Basil has been gone since 1978, the lore he created with his revolutionary designs and some-what off-beat ways remains. His nephew, Rob Oldfield now runs the family business, Prospect Lake Garage Inc., founded by Basil and his brother Brian Oldfield in 1934.

At the garage, just a few kilome-

tres down the road from the round-house, framed photos of Brian and Basil grace the top shelf behind the counter. Rob greets customers, recalls his uncle’s ways and offers what he can about the home – an in-progress project which only Basil understood.

“He was sort of his own fellow,” Rob says. “He never got married; never had children, just puttered on his own up there and cut his own hair.”

The building began in the mid-’60s, and was to include an eleva-tor. Basil fell ill with cancer before that could happen, but the home remains a mechanical marvel. Through a carport door beneath the home, its circular cellar reveals the heart of the house’s rotating mechanism. Doors marked with a high voltage warning conceal water and sewage pipes and pre-sumably the three-quarter horse-power electric motor from a car transmission and two gear boxes. Shafts from the gear boxes propel

rubber wheels on a metal track overhead. The robust thing of beauty is able to run at two speeds: low gear yields a once-daily revolution; high gear will take you 360 degrees in just three minutes.

Unlike other revolving struc-tures, which tend to have a station-ary centre, the entire welded steel frame structure rotates. Electricity is transferred through brushes in constant contact with the wheel.

“How do you figure that sort of thing out in the 1950s and ‘60s?” Rob says. “No nails was his claim to fame, so it’s kind of a noisy house to live in because when you step on the outside porch, you step on the metal and the whole thing kind of moves a bit because it’s sitting on wheels.”

The noise isn’t a factor for its inhabitants. One couple, Cathy Cook and Francis Sullivan, have called Basil’s home their own since

moving to Victoria in 1989.

“It’s pretty wild,” Sul-livan says. “When you think about the number of welds that went into this place, the amount of metal.”

Sullivan is impressed by the craftsmanship, but clearly the novelty of living in a two-bedroom, one-bath home that rotates has faded. It’s

the seclusion of the area that has kept the two long-term, though flicking the switch labelled “HOUSE” is a more of party trick he hasn’t forgotten.

“After 25 years, it’s not a big deal anymore,” Sullivan says. “But it’s amazing that it still works after all these years.”

And Rob would like to see it stay within the family for many years to come.

If Basil’s great-niece, 22-year-old Christi Oldfield is any indication, there will be demand for creative living well into the future.

“It’s important to me as an Old-field to keep (the house) in the family,” Christi says. “I think it’s the coolest thing.”
