Miles is one of our local tour professionals with two wins to his credit on the European Tour. Miles started out as an assistant Club Pro in Devon but soon realised that a life competing in Golf was what he wanted to do. He started out on the Satellite Tour and after a few reasonably successful seasons he secured his European Tour card at the 1996 Tour School. In his first year on tour he gained seven top 10 finishes but it wasn’t until 2002 that he achieved his first tour victory. That came at The Great North Open at the tough Staley Hall. For Miles it was a very emotional victory coming just two weeks after his mother had sadly passed away.

Two years later Miles led from start to finish winning the Diaged Championship at Gleneagles by 5 shots from Graeme McDowell. Although no further victories have followed, Miles has however become extremely close on several occasions. Last year was a frustrating and ultimately unsuccessful season resulting in Miles losing his full playing card. He is now working hard to get back out there with the Madiera Island Open first up then the US Open Qualifier at Walton Heath on the 28th of May.

Miles is definitely one of the nicest and most approachable Tour Pro’s you could ever meet so everyone here will be wishing him well and following his progress.

Ball Positioning

Ball position for wedges is middle of the stance, this allows you to compress the ball, gaining maximum spin.

When using a driver, the ball is teed up either inside or opposite the left foot. The swing path will have started rising, allowing you to hit the ball on the upswing naturally.

With a fairway wood the ball is positioned just inside your left heel. The clubhead should be running parallel to the ground.

As you go up in club the position moves slightly left, towards your front foot. As you can see above, a 6-iron is being used.

As you can see, I tee up with about 1/4 of the ball above the clubface.

The correct height to tee up is with 1/4 to 1/2 of the ball higher than the club face.

Bubba Watson certainly does it his way and he claims to have never had a lesson! Sorry Bubba, but who showed you how to grip correctly and set up correctly? Anyway, Bubba certainly deserved his playoff victory over Luis OostHuizen for that incredible 2nd shot off the pine needles on the 2nd Playoff hole! The final round was compelling viewing. Luis’s albatross at the Par 5, only the 4th time in Masters history set the scene, and over the following 5 hours there were many twists and turns. But in the end it was Bubba who slipped into the Green Jacket.

Backswing turn

On your backswing, produce great width with your takeaway, and keep your elbows away from your body.

With the driver - At the top of the swing the club should be pointing towards the target.

For those of us not supple enough to make a full shoulder turn with both feet flat on the ground, you can allow your left heel to raise, provided that you don’t change height during your swing.

Tip

The left heel can leave the ground with the knee pointing inwards. Jack Nicklaus found that it worked for him. You might find it easier to complete your turn!

Make a full as possible shoulder turn with your weight transferred to the inside of your right leg.

As you can see, my left arm and shaft are in line, square to the intended target line. The clubface is square with the toe pointing skyward.

Here in Andalucia, the Volvo World Match Play 17th - 20th of May is at Finca Cortesin. Ian Poulter, defending champion, is looking to hold onto his title. He will be competing with eleven of the world’s top Golfers. It’s only down the road and will be well worth a watch!

The BMW PGA championship is at Wentworth on the 24th - 27th of May. All four days live on the television. A must watch for all golfers! Luke Donald, the world number one is defending his crown, which he won in a playoff hole last year against Lee Westwood.

The Seniors are coming to the Costa del Sol in June from the 1st - 3rd at La Quinta Golf Club, Marbella. Carl Mason will be back to defend the title he won last year. These Senior golfers are a great watch!

Turning Exercise

Firstly, take the club with your left hand.

Turn your body and the club until the grip points in front of you. Keep the club horizontal – don’t point it down towards the ball position.

Place your hands in your pockets or on your hips, and then take your posture.

You should now be facing the intended target.

Then place it behind your back and through your elbows.

Then turn all the way to the correct follow through position, transferring your weight to your left foot.

This is a great turning exercise to get you moving correctly

Practice this in front of a mirror, or before you swing. It will teach you to turn and transfer your weight properly.
