A belated Happy New Year! Hope-fully you enjoyed winter break, stayed healthy and are back in the swing of things. It was wonderful to have an incredi-ble turn out for the Pro Kid Show. We are lucky to have such wonderful families to support our school and our PTA. A calendar of upcoming

events was recently sent home. Please note that any changes or additions will be sent home via the Gazette or Listserv. If you have not yet joined the PTA, I encourage you to do so. It is a great opportunity to meet and work with the parents of your children’s classmates and friends. In order to be effective, our PTA needs you and your input. Please consider sharing

your time and talents with the Gom-bert PTA. Think Spring! As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions. Amy Murphy [email protected]

President’s Corner

Dear Gombert Families, As we enter the second half of the school year, I would like to again thank the many parent volunteers who contrib-

ute so much of their time every day to helping our students succeed. I also want to thank all of our parents for your continued support at home. January has been a busy month here. Many of our students saw presenta-tions by Mutual Ground or the Robert Crown center. All of our students were excited to see Tim Hannig’s Pro-Kids assembly earlier this month and many of our families turned out to see the family program on January 20th. Tim shared a great message about good character and positive communi-cation. We are grateful to the Gom-bert PTA for sponsoring those assem-blies! We are often asked how parents can help their child become a stronger reader. Here are some strategies par-ents can use at home (taken from the US Dept. of Education, 2011): Without doubt, reading with children spells success for early literacy. Put-ting a few simple strategies into action will make a significant difference in helping children develop into good readers and writers. Through reading aloud, providing print materials, and promoting positive attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children's literacy and learning.

and we will be happy to provide one to any student who needs one. Snow/Emergency School Closings: Information on school closings will be available from the sources listed below. Please do not call the school office num-ber for closing information. Parents are telephoned through our

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Invite a child to read with you every day. When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you read. This will help the child learn that reading goes from left to right and understand that the word he or she says is the word he or she sees. Read a child's favorite book over and over again. Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. Invite the child to join in on these parts. Point, word by word, as he or she reads along with you. Discuss new words. For example, "This big house is called a palace. Who do you think lives in a palace?" Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story. Read from a variety of children's books, including fairy tales, song books, poems, and information books. Cold Weather Reminder: With the winter weather upon us, I’d like to remind everyone to please have stu-dents dressed warmly for school each day. All Indian Prairie elementary schools have outdoor recess on days when it is 5 degrees or warmer, ei-ther actual temperature or wind chill temperature. Students are outdoors for 15 to 20 minutes for recess. If any students are in need of a warm winter coat, we have many coats available in the main office at Gom-bert. Simply contact the main office

Hello Stargazers! Discovery’s February 24th Launch 2011 will bring the end of the space shuttle program. You won’t want to miss the last few launches! Discovery is targeted to launch Feb. 24th. It will deliver critical components to the International Space Station. Watch the launch live at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html You can also check the launch schedule here http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html

February’s Night Sky February is a great month to look for Orion’s dogs named Sirius and Procyon. Orion is the hunter that we focused on last month. This month try to find his two hunting dogs. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, making it easy to find. The star belongs to the constellation Canis Major (the big dog). Using the belt of Orion, draw a line through the three stars to the left to find Sirius. The other dog is named Procyon, which is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor (the little dog). Procyon is located above Sirius. Once you find the dog stars, look at their colors. You will notice Sirius is a white color but Procyon will look yellow. Family Night on February 4th Explore February’s Night Sky! The program will start with an introduction on how to use sky maps. Then you are on your own to discovering constellations, plan-ets, and more under the starry dome. Using a sky map and a red flashlight you will be able to find objects in the sky (the planetarium director will also be walk-ing around to help). Note: The planetarium will provide RED flashlights for every 2 people. Program Times: 6:00 pm & 7:00 pm Admission: $2 per seat Thank you for your continued support of the WVHS Planetarium. Keep Looking Up! Stephanie Rybka [email protected]

Student Council has many activities going. Please check out our blog at www.gombertstudentcouncil.blogspot.com/ February will be a busy month---

Monday, February 14th – Monday, February 28th, we will be sponsoring “Gifts from the Heart”. It is a pro-gram to collect clothes—all types (summer & winter) and blankets for a local shelter. So if you are thinking of “spring cleaning” early---keep us in mind for your donations.

February 24th will be another collection day for the blank notes cards for the soldiers. Also, we are still look-ing for gallon size ziplock bags and pens to package the cards.

Pop Top collection is still going on for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Check back next month for a total in pounds that we have collected so far.

Jersey Day is Friday, February 18th. Watch for new and exciting events planned for March & April. Thinking ahead---the month of May will be our election of our officers for 2011-2012 school year. More information to come on the election in April.

Student Council News

Once again, Gator students will have the opportunity to take part in the Kane County Cougars reading program and earn a ticket to a baseball game (this year on April 23rd or May 30th, Memorial Day). In addition, again this year, students have a chance to participate in Six Flag’s Read to Succeed program to earn a free Great America ticket. Both programs begin on Janu-ary 10th and run into February and March. The nice thing is, goals for each can be reached pretty much at the same time.

To win the free baseball game ticket, students will have a weekly number of minutes to read for the eight weeks of the program, ending on March 6th. All students who attend the ball game will receive free food and other special gifts from the cougars. Par-ents, family members, and friends may purchase tickets to attend the game with their students at a special rate. At the comple-tion of the reading program in March the LMC will sell these tickets. Your children will bring home inning sheets every two weeks. These sheets are to be returned to school one at a time every other Monday during the 8 weeks of the program. Please note the weekly goals in your packets. To win the free Great America ticket, children need only read for fun. In the packet there is a Reading Log. Your child should use this sheet to indicate all 6 hours of reading as they work toward their goal. Please sign this form to verify that the six hours of reading have been completed. Children can read silently, aloud or with an adult. You can read to our child or your child can read to you. Your child must finish the six hours of reading and return the completed tracking sheet to his or her teacher by February 13th in order to be eligible to receive a free admission coupon to a participating Six Flags amusement park. Packets of information on these two programs went home with students at around Monday, January 10th. If you did not receive this information, please contact our LMC Director, Gayl Smith at [email protected]. Students who read, succeed. Thanks for helping us foster the reading habit.

LMC Supports Reading

Author Jon Scieszka comes to town Naperville Reads, in conjunction with Anderson’s books is bringing author, Jon Scieszka (who wrote Stinky Cheese Man, Math Curse, the Trucktown books, the Time Warp Trio series and many others) to town for a series of appearances. All our 4th grad-ers will hear him speak at Waubonsie. There will also be a contest among the #204 elementary schools for a school visit. Fami-lies will have other opportunities to see him while he's in town during the week of March 14th. Now, about that contest: Gombert’s goal would be to not only win the visit, but to raise interest in this great author. We are de-claring now through March Cheer for Scieszka time. Mystery Readers will be coming into classrooms to read Scieszka books. Also, there are circulating take-home bags for K-2 classrooms containing a book and a short response to what is read. 3rd through 5th grade students may give a similar response following visits by the Mystery Readers. All these responses will be posted around the LMC. Students who turn one in will get a certificate for a free kids meal at Buffalo Wild Wings. We'll be pho-tographing and making note of all that is done for submission into the contest. We're hoping you will all find a way to take part. Scieszka speaks particularly well to male reluctant readers, but he's fun for everyone. Please ask your child(ren) if they’ve read anything by Mr. Scieszka. Keep him in mind should you be at the public library or shopping for a gift for your child. There will also be an opportunity to purchase autographed copies of Scieszka books through the school (order forms will appear in backpacks soon). Thanks for your support for our reading Gators.

A ceremony was held on January 27, 2011 at Mc Carty Elementary to honor the Gombert students who submitted entries in the PTA Reflection program. All students received a participation award and projects were displayed for viewing. This year’s theme was “Together We Can…” and allowed students to submit projects in literature, visual arts pho-tography, music and film/video production. Gombert first grader Cassie Kennedy’s photography entry advanced to the state level. Cassie is one of 32 students from district #204 to have their entry advance. Congratulations Cassie! Gombert Orchestra On Wednesday, December 1st, the fifth grade orchestra from Gombert, along with the fifth grade orchestras from White Eagle & Owen, gave their first concert of the year. This year there are 26 students involved in orchestra at Gombert. In preparation for our first concert, students in orchestra learned how to play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”, “Jingle Bells” and “Dreidel”. Stu-dents had the opportunity to perform on the stage in Waubonsie’s auditorium. They did a fantastic job on their concert and are already working hard preparing for their next concert.

We will again combine the orchestras from Gombert, Owen & White Eagle for a concert in March during Music in Our Schools Month, a national recognition of the importance of music education for all children across the United States. This concert will be on Wednesday, March 16 at 7:30 pm in the Still Middle School gymnasium. Students will be asked to report at 6:30 for tun-ing and warm-ups. We have started to work on playing music with melody and harmony parts. Our concert in March will fea-ture “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven, “Can Can” by Offenbach and “Return of the Metro Gnome” by Hubbell along with other sur-prises. We hope many families will come to support our students and all of their hard work.

Dear Parent: The Helping Hand Program was established in 1967 through combined efforts of the NapervilleJunior Woman’s Club, School District 203, and the Naperville Police Department. District 204 later became a part of this program. The purpose of the Helping Hand Program is to have adult assistance available in an emergencysituation, such as a child being lost, frightened, injured, or ill. The police departmentencourages Helping Hand households to display the Helping Hand sign year-round as a crime deterrent similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program. If a child comes to your door needingassistance, you would be asked to comply with the following rules:

Call the police immediately if a child comes to your door that is seriously injured, ill, lost, or frightened.

In case of injury or illness, do not administer any first aid except to restore

breathing or stop excessive bleeding. Do not offer any food, beverage, or medication. The child may be allergic or diabetic.

Do not transport the child in your car.

You can help support this program in two ways ;(1) Tell your child about the Helping HandProgram and; (2) Volunteer to be a Helping Hand household. Helping Hand is a volunteer program and can only succeed and be of benefit to our children if you are willing to help. If you do not have a Helping Hand sign on your block, please consider becoming a Helping Handvolunteer, the Helping Hand sign is a white hand on a red background. Your assistance is not only needed, but also greatly appreciated! Please return the completed application to your school office or to:

Dear Parents:

If you have a child who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2011, he or she is eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 2011-12 school year. We are pleased to offer ALL-DAY kindergarten for your child. You may enroll your child in either an ALL DAY kindergarten class or a HALF DAY kindergarten class. The hours for both of the options as follows:

Half day 9:05-11:50 AM or 12:50-3:35 PM (your child will be assigned to either AM or PM)

All Day 9:05 A.M.-3:35 P.M.

You are being asked to indicate your preliminary choice of all day or half day kindergarten on the attached form. You are invited and encouraged to attend a Kindergarten Parent Preview Night on Thurs. March 24th at 7:00 in room Multipurpose Rm. At this meeting, we will provide a detailed look at what the kindergarten ex-perience will offer. You will also be provided with more details related to registration requirements and dead-lines. This night is designed for parents and guardians only.

At the end of the March Parent Preview Night meeting, you will be able to fill out a form to inform us if you wish to change your placement choice indicated on this pre-registration form. Parents are encouraged to re-turn registration materials as soon as possible for planning purposes. The final deadline is May 27, 2011 af-ter which changes in placement cannot be accommodated.

Please note that if you select the half day option, your child may not necessarily attend his or her home school, Buses will be provided if your child attends a half day program at another school. Pre-registration and registration materials will be used to anticipate the need for half day kindergarten classes, but final decisions, including location, will not be made until after the registration deadline of May 27, 2011.

We need the Pre-Registration information on the attached sheet as soon as possible, so that we can begin planning kindergarten enrollment for the upcoming school year. This Pre-Registration information will be used to form a kindergarten mailing list. Once on the mailing list, additional information will be mailed to eligible kindergarten parents.

If you have any neighbors who do not presently have school-aged children, but will have an incoming kinder-gartner, please give them a copy of this form or ask them to call our office at 630-375-3700 so that we can send them this information. I look forward to meeting you at the Kindergarten Parent Preview Night. Please mark your calendars!

If you have an article to submit to the gazette please email it to [email protected] by the 20th of the month in any format you wish.

If you would like to advertise in the gazette then please contact me and we can get your ad out to our families. Prices will be based on size of article.

As you may have read we are going green this year. We will still circulate the gazette in paper through backpack mail. If you wish to receive a paper copy please submit the form found below with your student to school. Thank you for all your continued support. Dennis Brozak [email protected]
