The Empower Cruise ship was designed with the environment in mind. There is not yet a LEED for Ships, although LEED for Commercial Interiors was used as a guide line to achieve the greenest vessel possible. The categories focused on were Sustainable Site, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality.

  • The lobby is the most impressionable part of any hotel, in this case the hotel is on water. The lobby sets the mood and expectations for the rest of the vessel. The goal for the lobby was to make it fun, exciting and place where individuals can sit and converse with others as well as get all the information needed to navigate the Empower.

The lobby is located in the center of the ship on the main embarkation deck. It has two reception desks that has a custom drop ceiling that mimics the waves of the seas. The seating the lobby area is centered around the grand staircase that leads up to deck 6, where you can find the fine dining and the promenade.

  • Lobby

  • The lobby bar is fun and energizing. The color palette gets the creativity flowing. The bar is located on the main deck adjacent to the lobby. The chocolate cork floor that boarders the lobby and circulation areas flows into to bar, connecting the bar to the lobby.

The lobby bar features a custom bar and bar stools were inspired from the traditional ships stern and captains chair.

The custom bar top is made from a poly molded resin and epoxyed to floating legs giving appearance of dancing water. The 3fom material of the bar is an aqua color that has an waving texture that is illuminated from beneath to give a play on brilliance.

The custom bar stool It is constructed out of wiggle wood, recycled aluminum and then upholstered.

  • Lobby Bar

  • The Fine Dining restaurant is located on Deck 5 and 6. The space is able to accom-modate all passengers on board at once. Passengers enter the dining room on deck 5 where there is a grand room that leads up to deck 6 where the dining tables are.

The Fine Dining room is inspired by the rolling seas. Armstrong Clouds are dropped from an open plenum at various heights to give the appearance of the rolling seas. The ceiling element also breaks of the sea of tables and give each table a sense of space.

There are five back of house areas for the restaurant located on deck 6. There are four located in the main dining area for the servers for beverages, plates and napkins, ect. Then there is one main prep kitchen lo-cated at the back of the restaurant that is easily ac-cessed from BOH elevators. All food on cruise ships are made in one large kitchen on the lower decks and transported to the restaurants through out the vessel.

The tables in the dining room seat eight around a round table. The fabric that lines the chairs surrounding the table is a soft of elegant color palette. The flooring through out the space is a chocolate cork flooring that reduces the sound level in the restaurant as well as gives support for the servers walking back and forth from table to BOH.

  • Fine Dining

  • The Multi Functional Gymnasium is located in the center of the vessel on deck 5. Research found that motion of the sea is least felt in the center of the vessel. Locating the gymnasium in the center of the vessel was ideal because the activities that will take place need have the least amount of motion.

The Multi Functional Gymnasium is able to accommodate for gymnastics meets, soccer games, basketball games and an ice rink. The gym has enough storage space for the different functions.

The ceiling in the gymnasium is an acoustical Armstrong ceiling with industrial florescent lighting. Windows line the walls of the gymnasium flooding the space with natural lighting. There are daylight sensors that through out the space that monitors the lighting levels.

  • Multi Functional Gymnasium

  • The Spa is located on deck 12. It features a 3form partition and a small pond that separates the reception and the relaxation area. The custom partition is textured on the interior that allows light to pass through giving a shad and shadow effect. When there is little natural light there are LED strips to illuminate the partition. Under the wall is a pond that connects the two room and connects one back to nature.

There are several empowerment areas onboard the Empower Cruise. The Spa, Pool Deck and Meditation Decks are beautiful spaces that any passenger can utilize, relax and find themselves in tranquility.

The Meditation Deck is located on the top deck 14). It is full of vegetation and acts like a green roof for the vessel reducing the green house gases. The vegetation also helps with storm water run off and purifies some of the water that is used onboard reducing the amount of water intake. The Meditation deck is a great place for passengers to relax and connect with the natural environment. Also on this deck there is a tea house and a place for yoga and mediation.

The Pool Deck is located on deck 11 with an overlooking area on deck 12. There are two pools and four whirl pools. Two of the whirl pool cantilever over the edge of the vessel. All the pool water onboard is treated salt water so that NO potable water is used for leisure.

  • Empower Areas

  • There are six different layouts of staterooms aboard the Empower. The staterooms were designed using the existing structure and balconies. Every room has at least one balcony and can sleep four or more passengers. The square footage of the rooms range from 550 SF to 2000 SF. All rooms also include a small kitchenet and living area.

Throughout all the staterooms there were two different color palettes used. A cooler palette that includes blues, greens, tans and browns, and a warmer palette that has purples, oranges and browns allowing the passengers to choose a room that would best fit there needs.

Suite A is the largest stateroom on board. It is about 2000 SF and has to balconies, one that is accessible from the living area and other from the bedrooms. Suite A has a kitchenet and bar for entertaining, two bathrooms and can sleep six to ten. Suite B is the a smaller suite that is around 900 SF. This room has one balcony easily accessible from any part of the room. It also has a small kitchenet, living area, bathroom and a bedroom. Suite B can sleep four to six passengers. Located in the bedroom there is a desk that can be transformed into bunk beds.

Natural light is utilized in all staterooms by the use of large portholes, sliding glass doors and daylight sensors. All lighting fixtures in the staterooms have CFLs. All plumbing fixtures are low flow and all appliances are Energy Star.

To create a place that is beautiful, calming and engaging where the elderly can easily transition from their homes into a healthy and secure environment.

    Design Statement

To transform a space into an easily accessible, inviting and useful environment that fosters an easy way of life. Sustainable design the facility incorporates natural daylight throughout, energy efficient appliances, low flow fixtures and voc- free materials. The warm color scheme with punches of vibrant color and organic shapes reflect the natural world connecting the individual with nature.

The retirement community has grown 45% in the Arizona

region since 2009. With the economy the way it has been

families have not had the extra time or money to take in anoth-er mouth and body to take care

of which is where FCD come in. Retirement communities are changing and are now a place where people want to go and

live out their lives in a fun and relaxing environment with no or

    little responsibilities.

The owner of this facility wants it to be a place were staff and residents can relax. The facility is the in the leading for front of design. Through evidence based design and research the facility will be a place that

is healthy, beautiful and functions. This facility will be accessible for the whole community to utilize.

Client ProfileMetamorphosis - The Idea of Transformation

  • Concept & Introduction

I am going to be designing a retirement community that will incorporates assisted living and memory care, as wells as a clinic and several amenities to appeal to the active elderly of the region.

The facility will be located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Currently there are a number of retirement communi-ties and nursing home facilities in the Arizona region but few that demonstrate the new model of facilities that make these places a place of destination.

The climate in this area is the main reason for this location. In the winter the average temperature is 60 degrees and of course in the summer it can get up to a 110 or more. It is sunny all year round and makes it a happy and joyable place to live.

The facility will be urbanely located in order to have easy access to shopping malls and public transporta-tion. This site has the several opportunities for sustain-able design.

    Site Analysis

Research shows that creating an environment for residents that feels like home makes it easy for them to transition from their homes to a facil-ity with care. Providing lots of natural daylight and views of nature eases the residents and makes it a place where staff, residents and their families want to be. Research based design drives the project and makes it a place where people want to live and work.

    Iconic Wayfinding

Each department of the facility models the colors of the region and displays an icon of the Arizona. Using a high contrast image allows for the resi-dents to easily identify without this image is. Hav-ing a solid white icon on a colored background cues the user of their location in the facility.

  • Floor Plans & Wayfinding

  • General Wayfinding

These recognizable signs will be used throughout the facility. In an effort to layer wayfinding the signs are color coded to the area where they will be located. For example the town center color is mandarin and all the elevator signs stair and restroom signs will be shown in that color. The same goes for the administration area which is red, the clinical area which is blue, purple for assisted living and yellow for the wren care (memory care unit).

    Specialized Way finding

The signs will be made of two layers of 3form material. The bottom layer will have the icon and color of that area ( for example town center is swallowtail butterfly and mandarin). The top layer will be semi transparent and will have all the lettering and a small icon of the department. The layers of the signs add to the layering of wayfinding and will make it easy to navigate through the community.

  • Signage & Circulation

    Circulation

Spaces are aranged so circulation is achived with ease. When you first walk into Swallowtail Retirement Commu-nity you are confronted with a beautiful two story living wall/ fountain combination. Adjacent to the two story feature is the reception desk, elevators and the beauty salon. Just past the elevators is the rest of the town center like the mail room, retail store, work shop, cafe, theater, fitness room, day-care, craft room and the outdoor pool.

Just above the beauty salon is the town center library. The library is small and gives a residential feel. The books that will be occupying the shelves will be residents books or books that are donated to the facility. There are several places to sit and read or relax on the second floor of the town center which over looks the water feature and the front entry.

  • The Cactus Comfort Cafe in the town center is an all organic quisen. All the food product sold in the cafe is either locally grown or pulled straight from the community garden on site. The cafe features a green window as well as an outdoor patio with two fire places. There are several different dining experience that one could have in this cafe. The cafe is flooded with natural day light by the floor to ceiling windows on the south side of the buildings. All the finishes in the cafe contain recycled content or are local materials.

The beauty salon is a full service salon that is also open to the public. The salon incorporates water efficient fixtures and energy efficient appliances. The shampoo bowl and dresser station is combined to maximize floor space and minimize the amount the residents have to move from chair to chiar. On that note the salon is ADA compliant and all chairs are light and easy to move around to proved room for wheel chairs and walkers. The finishes used in the salon are all extremely durable and stain/ water residents. Large windows occupy two walls of the salon letting in an abundance of natural daylight making it a place people want to be.

  • The theater is a multi functional room where residents and members of the community can enjoy a movie in a theater like atmosphere or have a game night with Wii to get the residents up and moving. The theater chairs are custom designed for function. They are have a movable small desk and they are light weight for easy moving. The room is full ADA accessible with a service bar at the back of the theater and a small stage at the front. Carpet and cork flooring assist in acoustical and comfort control.

  • Concept: Essence of Experience

Indulge the senses and savor in the tastes, aromas and traditions of far away places at Exposed International Cuisine and Market.

The shape of a nautilus provided inspiration for both colors and design for the project. Elements of Nature would eventually become the main concepts in the experience at Exposed.

Exposed was a team project with myself and two other Interior Designers. The project objective was to take an existing building and renovate it and transform it into an ethinic restaruant that features Spain, France and Italy.

Exposed Restaurant iscommitted to Sustainabledesign and enterprise. TheGreen Roof and EducationDeck set an example forother establishments toconsider the planet whileenjoying the tastes of theworld.

  • Concept & Floor Plan

  • Sustainable Stratagies

Photovolatics, day lighting, stack ventilation, heat exchange and a recycling pro-gram are just a few of the essentials the design team considered to make Exposed a Green Restaurant to be envied.

As one passes by, the aromas of the kitchen make their way through the accordion style Nana-Walls that open in the front and in the back of the restaurant. Outdoor dining can be enjoyed in three separate areas at Exposed leaving Mother Nature to be enjoyed to her fullest.

The air bar opens to the back patio and outdoor option for the explorer within all of us. It offers dining nearly year round, has a secluded feel and is protected from the elements with trellis work, a rammed earth wall and fire place for thermal comfort.

  • Exterior Design

  • The Water Bar greets the patrons with a privacy wall covered in 3form glass and smooth river pebbles. An intimate bar setting and ample space for waiting for tables near the restaurant, the Water Bar make a great first impression.

The Fire Lounge is tucked in the back of Exposed and feautres a romantic fire place. The warm colors and the glow of the wine bar next door, it offers a more intimate dining alternative and high back chairs promote cozy conversations.

The main dining area is highlighted by the Community Banquette dining table and bench covered with Kravet Green fabrics. Complimented by warm, infused colors of the earth proper acoustics make this room a comfortable experience for dining and custom fixtures enhance the area with intimate pools of light.

The Wine Bar is intimate, secluded and allows the patron to see through to the retail Market place and outside. Dancing lights and sensuous fabrics provide the sultry side of Exposed.

  • A lot of research and planning went into design a 330,000 square foot cruise ship. I con-ducted many interviews, studied several case studies and did numerous virtual site visits since ports are not readily available to use in Colorado.

    Interviews

Throughout the interviewing process safety and function seem to be the key points of designing a cruise ship. I interviewed several different types of people to a well rounded idea of what would meet every ones needs on a large scale. I started with professionals that currently work or has worked in the past on cruise ships. They gave me a lot of insight on the codes that need to be adhered to and the function that ships must have to circulate people and goods aboard. I then interviewed individuals that have traveled on a cruise ship and others that would be future cruisers. From these in-terviews I got a lot of information on what amenities the common consumers would like to have aboard. The interviewing process was crucial to the designing process and all throughout the design the findings of these interviews can be seen.

    Case Studies

To get a better understanding of how cruise ships work currently, I studied many case studies in many different areas of design. I look into a case study on GREEN ships, accessibility on board, how stereo systems work and lighting design. Throughout these case studies I took the most important aspects and applied them to the design of Empower.

    Site Observations

Since Colorado is a land locked state and we do not have ports available to use I did all my site observation virtually. I looked at many different sizes of cruise ships. I focused on the room layouts of staterooms and how they function, the amenities that were on board and the circulation patterns of these cruise ship. The site observations helped me decide on the size of cruise ship that would most benefit my design plan.
