Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) I write this on the evening of Sunday, May 17; I need to complete it
before leaving early tomorrow for the annual Clergy Institute. This
year’s institute will focus on how we move forward as a diocese after
(more or less) completing a 15-year process of reorganizing the parish
clusters that make up our diocese. Among important matters under con-
sideration: how to spread the faith in one of the most un-churched states
in the USA and how to effectively invite no-longer-practicing-Catholics to return to
practice. An annual feature of the institute is celebrating priest jubilarians. Among
them this year is Fr. Hubert Paquet, Fr. Sylvio Levesque, Fr. Harold Morsehead -- all
ordained 60 years ago on June 4, 1955 (when I was 4 years old)! Fr. Ron Labarre and
Fr. Philp M. Tracy celebrate 55 years this year, along with Fr. Raymond Picard (50
years), and Fr. Richard Ouellette (40 years). This may not be a complete list, and I
will update it later if necessary. (2) Last weekend, Bishop Deeley announced that
Father Jack Dickinson is being re-assigned to study canon law at the Catholic Uni-
versity of America in Washington D.C. He will be succeeded in Good Shepherd Parish
by Fr. Robert Gaudreau, who currently serves in the Dover-Foxcroft/Dexter/Milo/
Pittsfield cluster. These assignments will be effective on August 1st. You can find more
information about these and other clergy assignments at www.portlanddiocese.org. (3)
Last weekend was Commitment Weekend for the 2015 Catholic Appeal. If you
have not already done so, please be thankful, intentional, and prayerful as you com-
plete your gift form. If you were not able to make your pledge last weekend, I invite
you to do so this weekend and to place the pledge form in the basket during the usual
offertory collection, or stamp & mail the envelope directly to Catholic Appeal,
P.O. Box 628, Lewiston, ME 04243-0628. (4) We are resuming a 5:30 pm Saturday
evening Mass during the summer at Saint Brendan’s Chapel in Biddeford Pool this
Saturday, May 23. (5) Priests of the parish will lead Memorial Day services at Saint
Joseph’s Cemetery (1:30 pm), and at Saint Mary’s Cemetery (2:30 pm) this Sunday,
May 24. All are invited. You may want to bring a lawn chair. The events will be can-
celled should there be bad weather. (6) Graduation Mass: Good Shepherd Parish high
school seniors are invited to participate in our 2015 Graduation Mass at St. Philip
Church next Sunday, May 31 at 9 am. (7) The Knights of Columbus St. Joseph
Council #12941 of Biddeford earned the distinction of Double Star Council, for the
2013-2014 year. The organization’s international headquarters, located in New Haven,
Connecticut, made the announcement. The award recognizes overall excellence in the
areas of membership recruitment (reaching 200% of quota, thereby making it a
“double star”) and retention, promotion of the fraternal insurance program and spon-
sorship of service-oriented activities. The award was presented to the membership at a
special ceremony held at the group’s March monthly meeting. I add that they have
been outstanding in supporting the life and mission of Good Shepherd Parish. (8) Pa-
rishioners attending weekday, vigil or Saturday afternoon Masses at St. Joseph Church
should not park in the Rent-A-Center lot on 160 Elm Street; cars may be towed at
those times. I am grateful that the owner does allow parking there for Sunday Masses
when the business is closed. (9) Thank You of the Week: To the parish Mission
Committee for once again organizing a well attended program last weekend featuring
EWTN’s Marcus Grodi. Thank you!
JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne: The average man’s life
consists of 20 years of having his mother ask where he is going, 40 years of having his
wife ask the same question, and at the end, the mourners wondering too.

Trinity Sunday (May 31). For a just cause, this
“Easter Duty” may be fulfilled at some other time

A Prayer for Deceased Veterans

departed find rest, look kindly on your

St. James School is Service
Academics
Faith
Excellence
St. James School staff partners with parents, parishioners, and our community to provide students with opportunities to become faith-filled Catholics, creative and critical thinkers, life-long learners, and confident contributors to the Church and society.
If you have not driven by Saint James School, make a small detour to see the bulbs and trees in Spring bloom. This school building was constructed in the 1930's and has been well main-tained. When visitors enter the school, the first thing that they do is notice the beautiful woodwork and the character of the construction. The school is still alive with Saint James students in the classrooms and the school yard. Drive by and take a look! The music teacher at Saint James School and the science teacher got together to teach a lesson on sound. Pictured here is a sixth grade student trying to play the scale on beakers with different amounts of water in them. After he had the right amount of water in the glasses, he could play a tune. The music room was quite melodious as the students kept trying to get just the right amount of water in the glasses. It is a good example of how teachers at Saint James School work together to integrate subjects to teach a concept!
MY FRIEND AND I STORYTIME Fridays, 11-11:30 am in May
Parishioners, come and join our librarian as she has a storytime for young children (ages 0 to kindergarten) at Saint James School. Mrs. Souza starts and ends each session with a song. She reads from quality literature each week and if time permits, has a related activity. Grandparents, parents, or any parishioner can come with a child under school age. You must stop in the office and sign in, and then you will be directed into the St. James Library.
There is no fee and it is a good opportunity to expose your child to quality literature, meet other parishioners with children the same age as yours, and see St. James School.

July 5-9 (Sun-Thurs): New Evangelization Week – The diocese will once again be offering New Evangelization Week (N.E.W.) for high school youth--this includes those entering high school in the fall as well as those who have just graduated. Come See Pope Francis in Philadelphia!
(Sept 21-27) – Pope Francis has announced that he will be visiting the World Meeting of
Families in Philadelphia this Septem-
ber. His visit will come at the conclu-sion of the event, but the whole event looks pretty in-
credible! We (Josh & Pam Houde) are planning to attend, and hope to gather a group of interested families and young adults to join us.
Unlike many of the other trips available, we are hoping to make this
trip as affordable as possible by driving our personal vehicles, and taking advantage of some of the inexpensive housing options we have
found. Please consider joining us! For a handout with the trip details, please contact Josh at the above contact info.
All of us at Good Shepherd Parish would like to thank
our Catechists for answering the call to serve Christ by
leading our young children to the truths of our Catholic
faith. Thank you all for giving of your time and talents to
help others. You are a true blessing to all of us!!
