Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) The gifts of Epiphany have always aroused the interest of believers. Gold is believed to symbolize the royal kingship of Christ, frankincense to indicate his divinity, and myrrh to symbolize the mortal human condition that the Son of God assumed at his conception and birth. Because myrrh was used in the Middle East to embalm corpses, it was understood to refer to Christ’s coming passion, death and burial. Ever since I served my first

Christmas Mass as a third-grader, I have been particularly interested in the incense because the priests carefully trained me how to light the charcoal on which the incense burned (so I wouldn’t burn down the church)! As a student of the liturgy, I have come to appreciate that our Catholic ceremonies appeal to all the senses, including that of smell. In biblical times, Sheba (Yemen of today), had a monopoly on the frankincense trade, and the substance was worth its weight in gold. In our day, trees in the Horn of Africa provide most of the world’s supply. Top-quality incense sells for about $100 a pound in the West, though lower quality can be bought for much less. (2) On December 22, Bishop Deeley celebrated Mass with the Rite of Candidacy for Good Shepherd parish-ioner, Alexander Boucher, at the Cathedral. Alex is in his 4th of 6 years of studies at St. John’s Seminary, Brighton, MA. The Rite of Candidacy signifies that the seminarian has reached a point in his discernment where he and the Church are ready to make his intention as a candidate for priesthood more public. Alex’s parents and grandmother were present for the Mass as were many priests, seminarians and discerning young men from around the state. (3) From Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on the joy of the family, Amoris Laetitae: “Media cannot replace the need for more personal and direct dialogue, which requires physical presence or at least hearing the voice of the other person” (n. 278). “In marriage, the joy of love needs to be cultivated” (n. 126). “Another great challenge of marriage preparation is to help couples realize that marriage is not something that happens once for all. Their union is real and irrevocable, confirmed and consecrated by the sacra-ment of matrimony. Yet, in joining their lives, the spouses assume an active and creative role in a lifelong project. Their gaze now has to be directed to the future that, with the help of God’s grace, they are daily called to build” (n. 218). “This process takes time. Love needs time and space; everything else is secondary. Time is needed to talk things over, to embrace leisurely, to share plans, to listen to one another and gaze in each other’s eye, to appreciate one another and to build a stronger relationship. Sometimes the frenetic pace of our society and the pressures of the workplace create problems. At other times, the problem is the lack of quality time together, sharing the same room without one even noticing the other. Pastoral workers and groups of married people should think of ways to help young or vulnerable couples to make the most of those moments, to be present to one another, even by sharing moments of meaningful silence” (n. 224). Contemplate & Share: • Who do we include in our family circle? When do we spend time together? What have we discovered about God’s love and care through these times of family sharing? • What distractions or concerns get in the way of our time together for prayer, learning, or enjoying the simple gift of being with each other as a family? • Look at the schedule for our household for the past seven days. To what did we give the most time? Did this schedule include time to be together as a family beyond completing day-to-day tasks? Will spending our time this way in the coming weeks help our family be better connected with each other and God? If not, what is one thing we will do differently this week to care for our relationships with God and our family? • On a scale of 1 (miserable) to 10 (overjoyed), rate how you feel at the end of a typical week. Why did you choose this rat-ing? How might the way you use your time affect the rating? What or who helps you to live with hope and joy even when life is challenging? A possible “Joy in Action” for this week: Come together as a family to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany with a Twelfth Night Dinner. If you have children, bake a King Cake together to be served for dessert. (4) Thank You of the Week: To the parishioner who made it possible to provide remote coverage of the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass in St. Joseph Church Hall with the help of a cameraman, ushers, a cantor, and Eucharistic ministers. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 8 - Msgr. Tonne: Suggestion for a letter from parents to a son or daughter in college: P.S. Was going to send you some money, but the envelope was sealed.

"Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah:

"And you, Bethlehem ... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel"

(cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced.

On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate them-selves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as

they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of

Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom

of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they

followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and

wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.—LPI Meditation

recorded to your account. We are happy to provide you with a record of your donations if requested. We will begin processing requests in

mid January, and prefer handling these digitally in order to reduce administrative costs to the parish. Visit www.goodshepherdparish.us to

view a link on the home page underneath the online giving icon or within the “About Us” tab to fill out the “Annual Donation Report” form (most preferred way) or you can email [email protected] with

Tax law requires that we acknowledge receipt of any single donation of $250 or more with a letter, which is standard procedure. However,

smaller amounts donated by check to the collection basket that are not in Offertory Envelopes are not recorded, but simply are deposited to the

bank. You must then rely on your canceled check and bank statements, as record for your donation. If you would like to receive Envelopes,

please contact [email protected]. For parishioners who donate through WESHARE, our online giving service, you may SELF-SERVE and print for yourself a record of your

donations directly from your WESHARE account. Thank you for your cooperation and generosity throughout the year!

or do you stand and proclaim God’s Will?” Priests for Life have set up the special website, AbortionForgiveness.com at

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION ASSOCIATION OF

SOUTHERN MAINE: Lord in your great love, answer me... Psalm 69. We are blessed to have the only full-time adoration chapel in the state of Maine nestled in the heart of

Good Shepherd Parish. It is located on Thornton Ave-nue in Saco in the former Notre Dame Sisters’ resi-dence. There, Jesus waits for us to bring our thanks,

our petitions, our prayers, our conversation, our love. Hundreds of people from all over southern Maine visit each week, most at a scheduled hour, but many more

who just drop in to visit. The scheduled adorers keep the chapel open, but some have to discon-tinue because of illness, death, moves, or other changes in their lives. Please consider being a scheduled adorer by setting up just one hour

to be your visit time each week. You won’t be sorry! FMI: Please contact one of the following division leaders:
