Musgraves has been lauded by virtuallyevery publication on the planet for her highlypersonal and truly rocking country sounds;shes on tour in support of her just-releasedalbum, Pageant Material a topic that apparently strikes quite close to home for thisTexas beauty. Two decades ago longbefore Same Trailer Different Park turned herinto a Grammy-winning country star with

sold-out tours and Top 10 hits Musgravesparticipated in her first (and only) beautypageant.

My hometown is pretty famous for itssweet potatoes, she says, and every year, they hold the Golden Sweet Potato Festival. They crown a Sweet Potato Queen and aLittle Miss Tater Tot for little girls. I only

competed for Little Miss Tater Tot once, when I was about three, and lost miserably toa girl in a sparklier dress.

The pageant world, with its fake smilesand sky-high hairdos, wasnt the best matchfor Musgraves. She was more interested insongwriting, finishing her first tune at 9years old and learning her first instrument,

the mandolin, as a pre-teen. Years later, though, the peculiarities of dailylife in a small town along with the placesshes visited (and people shes met) sincemoving away areback on her mind.

Its been years sinceMusgraves lived inGolden, Texas, herchildhood home ofroughly 600 people, butthe whirlwind that fol-lowed Same TrailerDifferent Park adebut album thattopped the countrycharts, took home twoGrammy Awards(including CountryAlbum of the Year) andsent Musgraves halfwayacross the world on tour made her think hardabout where she camefrom. Pageant Material,

her second album, pays tribute to those BibleBelt roots, shining a light on a hometown girlwhos grown up, expanded her worldviewand done a lot of livin since skipping town. Its an album about where shes from andwhere shes going, full of autobiographicaldetails that are humorous and heartwarming.

  • Only time will tell whether Latvian center KristapsPorzingis, selected by the New York Knicks at theNBA Draft, will become a postivie factor for theteam. Unfortunately, the Knicks had the fourthpick in a draft which appeared to have only threealmost-certain-to-have high impact players:University of Kentucky center/forward Karl-Anthony Towns, Duke center Jahlil Okafor, andOhio State guard DAngelo Russell.

Knicks president Phil Jackson knew that he wasbehind the proverbial eight-ball even beforeThursdays proceedings, because he had no luck inlast months draft lottery that determined order ofteams picking players. The ping-pong balls workedagainst the Knicks, who in the old days would havehad the second pick based on their putrid 17-65record. Jackson decided to roll the dice by selectingPorzingis, 19, who has played professionally inSeville, Spain and has reminded many of a youngDirk Nowitzki. The Knicks fans at Barclays Centerin Brooklyn, site of the Draft, lustily booed theselection. Porzingis, who speaks better English thana lot of Americans, displayed poise by taking it allin stride. He told the media that he understood thatNBA fans were far more familiar with college hoopsstars thanks to American television than they werewith European pros. The big concern for fans iswhether the rail-thin Porzingis is ready to be amajor contributor to the Knicks. The media had afield day with the pick, because apparently superstar Carmelo Anthony has his doubts aboutPorzingis ability to improve the Knicks immediately. Melo may be right, but given thecurrent state of the Knicks it would be absurd toexpect the team to be a serious contender for anNBA title next season.

Jackson can breathe a sigh of relief in knowingthat a longtime habitue of Madison SquareGardens celebrity row, actor Steve Schirripa(who played Bobby Baccala on HBOs TheSopranos and recently launched his own line ofpasta sauces, Uncle Steves) is impressed withPorzingiss height and talent. Its always a smartidea to please a cast member of The Sopranos!Although he knew little about baseball, Kristaps

gamely through out the ceremonial first pitch atCiti Field the day after he was drafted, and displayed good form.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins admittedto the media just before the start of the CinncinatiReds versus Mets series two weeks ago that theteam cant manufacture runs easily because theycant bunt, cant execute hit-and-run plays, andhave no speed. He said that the Mets offense is

built on power. Granted, injuries have sapped a lotof that power, but even when healthy the Mets are afar cry from the 1927 Yankees. Clearly, Collins wasbeing sarcastic, and is understandably unhappywith the lineup that general manager SandyAlderson has assembled. Collins might have want-ed to use rookie pitcher Steven Matz who madehis Major League debut beating the Cincinnati Reds6-2 in the field on days when he was not pitching.Matz went 3 for 3 while driving in four runs at theplate before the most raucous crowd seen at CitiField this season. Matz grew up in Stony Brook andattended Ward Melville High School. Based on thereturns from Matz first start, the Mets might

  • have had a Jeremy Lin-like sensation on their hands... had the pitcher not suffered a torn muscle thatwill keep him out of action for a spell.

Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy Kingdeserves credit for trading center Mason Plumlee tothe Portland Trail Blazers in return for University ofArizona forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, whoPortland drafted in the first round. Plumlee arrivedwith a lot of fanfare from Duke University as theNets first-round pick in 2013; the team tried hardto make him the face of their franchise at lastFebruarys All-Star Game Weekend, even though hehad done little to earn that kind of accolade.Whenever Plumlee was asked to spell center BrookLopez for a few minutes, the Nets offense wouldcease scoring and the opposing team would run offpoints at will during their possessions.

Many scouts called University of Arizona

forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson thebest defensive player from thisyears college class. Rondae grew upin Chester, Pennsylvania, just southof Philadelphia. He has a quick witand should bring much-needed lifeto the quiet Nets locker room.Rondaes teammate from Arizona, forward Stanley Johnson, was selected by the Detroit Pistons, andcertainly matches him when it comesto personality. I asked Johnson if hewould buy a car from one of theBig Three auto makers since hesnow in Detroit: Oh yeah! I love theDodge Challenger. I cant wait to getone! I then asked him if he had anendorsement deal with Chrysler.

No, but I am hoping to get one now! he replied.DAngelo is not a common first name, so I asked

Ohio State guard DAngelo Russell, selected by theLos Angeles Lakers with the second pick of theDraft, if he had ever crossed paths with his St.Johns University counterpart, DAngelo Harrison.I never heard of him, Russell quickly replied.Apparently, neither did NBA team executives asHarrisons name was not called although his RedStorm teammate, Sir Dominic Pointer, was selectedby the Cleveland Cavaliers near the end of the second round.

Neither Jahlil Okafor nor Justise Winslow, whoboth left Duke after their freshman years where theBlue Devils won yet another NCAA hoops title, could explain to me why a college that is oftenreferred to as the Harvard of the South is soobsessed with winning basketball titles with

players who have no interest in spending morethan one year there. You have to be at least 19 toplay in the NBA, and that accounts for why somany players drop out of college after their firstyear in higher education.

  • Ted 2Starring Mark Wahlberg, AmandaSeyfried, Jessica Barth, MorganFreeman, Dennis Haysbert, PatrickWarburton, Michael DornDirected by Seth MacFarlaneUniversal

Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynnwant to have a baby, but in order to qualify tobe a parent, Ted will have to prove he's a personin a court of law. Universal Pictures' plotsynopsis for Ted 2

Don't blame Hollywood blame your-selves, America. There are so many terriblethings that audiences have not only accepted but made bonafide hits out of dur-ing the past 50 years that make that eternal question, What were we thinking?, seems woefullyinadequate. From the Batman TV series toGilligan's Island to Zager & Evans and TheCowsills all the way to The Real Housewives OfBeverly Hills and The Jerry Springer Show toNicki Minaj and Nickelback, North America has alot to apologize to the rest of the world for thosethings, of course, as well as not one but two comedy films featuring a talking stuffed bear.

If anyone's counting, the wildly overrated SethMcFarlane shouldn't be allowed anywhere near afilm lens ever again; apparently, the flops of TV'sDads and his horrific last feature, A Million WaysTo Die In the West, haven't been enough to promptstudios such as Universal to shut off the green

light; all that Family Guy cred can't last forever ifthis low level of quality keeps up. And make nomistake Ted 2 has no reason to exist other than toprove people will buy anything, even at $12 a clipbacked by an $8 popcorn-and-soda special.

If you at least saw TV ads for the original Tedfilm, you know that a stuffed bear come to life is afoul-mouthed, rude, vicious, mean-spirited, slovenly creep. Since these qualities aren't consid-ered positive attributes for people, why are theyconsidered funny because they come from a toy?And if you come to see Ted 2, expect a lot of cum;there are more semen and masturbation jokes inthis film than offered in any media since the July2012 issue of Hustler. That seems to be the level ofaudience this film strives for or perhaps it's the

11-year-old that yells pee pee! and laughs hyster-ically at his own cleverness. Either way, this movieis the cinematic equivalent of Hungry HungryHippos, which that same slob kid managed tosmash into pieces the first time he played with it.

The worst part of all this is that the cast doeswhat it can; none of the performances can be designated as faulty. Mark Wahlberg as John isabout as likable as he's ever been; Jessica Barth asTed's wife, Tami-Lynn, is as capable at comedy asshe is beautiful. Amanda Seyfried is neither goodnor bad as a perpetually stoned family counselor;there are great cameos from Liam Neeson andMorgan Freeman, among about a dozen others.Trust us: Any laughs you find here don't comefrom that annoying, oversized plush toy.

acclaimed album, Machine Head, with IanGillan on vocals. The record features both"Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water," asong inspired by The Grand Hotel inMontreux, Switzerland burning to theground during a Frank Zappa concert.

Today, the band features original drummerIan Paice, vocalist Ian Gillan, the legendary

producer and bassist Roger Glover, formerDixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse, and keyboardist Donald Airey. Best known forhits such as "Hush," "Black Night," Drifter,"Strange Kind Of Woman" and "Woman FromTokyo," in 2013 Deep Purple released NowWhat?!, their first new album in seven years. Also recently released is the newly

re-mastered classic, Live In Japan, featuringseminal live recordings of "Highway Star,""Smoke On The Water" and "Space Truckin'."

Despite their longevity, Deep Purple canboast of an ever-increasing fan base; not resting on yesteryear, the band has releasedfour studio albums since 1996, a total augmented by an abundance of solo work.

Zappa Plays (& Teaches!) Zappa:Zappa Plays Zappa, which continuesthe musical legacy of Frank Zappa, will celebrate the 40th anniversary ofone of rock's most heralded albums The Mothers Of Inventions One SizeFits All on Friday, July 24 at 8 pmThe Paramount in Huntington. Fortickets and information: paramountny.com. In addtion,Dweezil Zappa will teach a master

class for musicians; log on for complete info.

Dweezil Zappa is the modern faceof Zappa music, and the person whocan bring it fully formed into thefuture. Often referred to as ahead ofits time, Frank Zappas music isbrought to life for modern audiences, thanks to Dweezil and the five othertelepathic musicians that make upZappa Plays Zappa. Through the artful channeling of his fathers timeless music, rich in complexityand perfect in execution, Dweezilapplies his Grammy-winning virtuoso to exposing, performing, and shamelessly prosthelytizing theart that is literally in his blood.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary ofOne Size Fits All, Zappa Plays Zappawill recreate live the final studioalbum from Frank Zappa and TheMothers of Invention.

"One Size Fits All is one myfavorite records for a number of reasons, said Dweezil. Zappa. Thematerial on the record has incredible

arrangements and instrumentation. It features a great non-traditionalorchestral rock sound on songs like'Inca Roads.' There are extremely difficult interlude passages to per-form in that song and the intervallicvocal melody with speedy phrasingis also quite difficult. Besides thecomplexity of the arrangement thesong also allows for beautifulimprovisation. It is a hallmark of my

fathers writing style, which allowsthe music to become unique in frontof each live audience who witnessesit. I am looking forward to playingthis album in its entirety because ofthese challenges but also because thealbum contains many of my favoritesongs. 'Andy', 'Florentine Pogen,'Po-Jama People,' 'Sofa,' and 'San'Berndino.'

Besides performing the entireOne Size Fits All album, Zappa PlaysZappa will play another 70 to 75 minutes of other material fromFrank's catalog. We also like to havea few surprises up our sleeves andthis tour is no exception, saidDweezil. The concert, in this case, is

only half the story: Guitarist DweezilZappa will offer Long Island fansmaster classes in guitar on the dayof the concert for less than the priceof a fuzz pedal; Dweezil will previewsome of the guitar concepts he teaches at his camp in a special eventprior to each concert on this tour.More info: dweezilzappaworld.com.

Failure, one of the most influential trios in altrock history, makes its debut on Saturday,July 18 at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury.Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster.com;for more information, log on to thespaceastwestbury.com.

The stop at The Space is one of the first onFailures current tour in support of ther just-released new album, The Heart Is A Monster.

Thematically weve moved from the outerspace of Fantastic Planet to inner space, saidguitar/bass player Greg Edwards of the newalbum, the bands first full-length since 1996.From the dislocation of ones identity to thecomplete erasing of it by sleep and dreams. Ithink weve used instrumentation in the service of mood and emotion to an even

greater degree than on our previous records. The band returned from a 17-year hiatus in

early 2014 with a single Los Angeles dateplanned. The show sold out in seconds, which led to a North American tour, includ-ing a run of dates with Tool and appearancesat Riot Fest, Fun Fun Fun, and Cinquanta, and eventually back to the studio. In a recentinterview with Noisey, singer/guitar/bass

player Ken Andrews admits by the time theband announced their first live outing, he,Edwards and drummer Kellii Scott werealready working on new music, saying: Onething that Greg and I agreed on very earlyon, is that we did not want to reform for justone or two nostalgia tours. We wanted tocome back as a full functioning musical forceand creatively pick up where we left off withFantastic Planet. That meant we needed tostart experimenting in the studio first, whichwe did in late 2013. After a few months, wecame to the conclusion that we were having agood time and that we liked the results, and

that we thought the results were definitelyFailure. Weve been chipping away at a newalbum this whole time.

In that same article, Andrews and Edwardssaid that their approach to writing andrecording Fantastic Planet and The Heart Is AMonster have been similar, saying Thesongs on Fantastic Planet appear more or lessin the order that we wrote them when, wedo a song now, we write it and record itsoup-to-nuts without moving to another song It takes longer, but it makes more sense forus artistically to explore a song completelybefore you move on.
