PUE – Power Usage Effectivenessby The Green Grid
Measure PUE
Manage airflow„It‘s important to eliminate the mixing of the hot and the cold air.“
CFD – Computational Fluid Dynamics
CRAC – Computer Room Air Conditioning unit
Adjust the thermostat„One of the simplest ways to save energy in a data center is to raise the temperature.“
80 °𝐹 ≈ 26,6 °𝐶
Use free coolingYou can see this in publicly recorded PUE data
Belgium – evaporative towers without any chillers
Finland – sea water from the Bay of Finland (without temperature gradient)
TWO EXAMPLES
Optimize power distribution
UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply
You have to convert from AC down to DC in order to charge batteries and then you needto convert DC back to AC and again down to DC for all the components in the data center.
It‘s not necessary!
100% recycling
Since 2007, Google has enough outdated servers to avoid buying over 300,000new replacement machines.
Before Google buys new equipment and materials, they look for ways to reuse what they already have.
When Google can’t find a new use for their equipment, they completely eraseany components that store data, and then resell them into the market.
Piloting new technology
1. They make good business sense
ROI – Return On Investment in a reasonable period of time
2. They have long term potential to transform the industry
Criteria for bringing new technologies on campus:
Purchasing clean energy
Google signed six contracts for over 630 MW of wind energy
Based on PPAs – Power Purchase Agreements
Iowa (114 MW), Oklahoma (100.8 MW), Northern Sweden (72 MW – underconstruction), Texas Panhandle (239.2 MW), Sweden (59 MW – not ready yet), westcentral Oklahoma (48 MW)
It‘s about 22% of Google‘senergy consumption
