Fellow Lions,
Wow, what a great turnout for our first Winter Conference! Lions from District 24-D and 24-B representing 63 clubs came together to learn and socialize in beautiful Williamsburg. DG Ann Ragland and I owe a special thanks to Winter Conference Chair, Carrol Bailey and our host club the James City Lions Club for a fantastic event. For those of you unable to attend, the full PowerPoint presentation on the district transition plans as presented during the conference is available at http://lions-of-virginia-24d.org/uploads/24I_Transition_Update.2.11.18.pdf. Here are just a few of the highlights.
On July 1, 2018 District 24-D and District 24-B will form District 24-I. The new district will stretch from Lynchburg to Virginia Beach consisting of 96 Lions Clubs with nearly 2,300 members. District 24-B will be known as Central Virginia consisting of three Regions, I – III, and seven Zones, A – H. District 24-D will be known as Southeastern Virginia with three Regions, IV – VI, and nine Zones, I- Q. It’s important to understand that only the names of our current regions and zones will change. All clubs will remain in their current assigned areas. The two 1st Vice District Governors (VDGs) met in July 2017 to discuss who will run for District Governor (DG) in May 2018. The two 1st VDGs agreed that Lion Jeff Gaddis will stand for election as DG at State Convention. This step was necessary because LCI will only recognize one person as DG Elect from District 24-I since there is an approved redistricting plan on file. The 1st VDG attends several training sessions, funded by LCI, to prepare for the DG position. Lion Calvin Easter agreed to run for 1st VDG for a second term. Therefore, these two Lions are working together to create a new cabinet structure.
The new district will have seven foundations. All foundations in District 24-B have completed the transition process and now carry the Central Virginia designation. The foundations in District 24-D are still in this process. Once proposals are approved by the individual foundations, a vote of the membership will be required at a district meeting. Our district currently owns property, such as Spots, that will need to be identified and a list compiled. All electronic media faces will be combined such as Facebook, newsletter and the website. This is an opportunity to update our public image and we’re investigating potential vendors and outlets. In July, we’ll be eligible for a LCI merger grant that will offer funding to invest in membership and

public relations.
As you can see by our training, some work has already been completed, but there is still a lot of work to do and the countdown clock is ticking. With all the talk of the future, it’s easy to forget that we still have goals to accomplish before June. Many of our goals have been completed but we’re still lacking in the area of membership. Hopefully, the Open House training conducted by GMT Lion Mack Stevens inspired your club to host an event in March or April. Everyone who pledged Lions 101 should be striving to achieve the program goals. If in doubt – reach out; our leadership team is here to help you.

DG Beth Stevens
Time Capsule Legacy Project
Fellow Lions,
This being our Lions Clubs 100 year anniversary, District Governor Beth asked me to initiate a Legacy Project in her name. This project is to purchase and install a Time Capsule and find a location to install the capsule. This cap-sule will be dedicated on June 7th, 2018 at Windsor Castle Park, in Smithfield, Virginia. This Park is located up on the ridge overlooking the Pagan River and the Smithfield Station Restaurant where the Smithfield Lions Club holds their monthly meetings. The Manor House, Circa 1750, is on this property donated by the Luter Family and is where the City of Smithfield holds all of their Fest Events. Our District Leo clubs from Lancaster, Poquoson, and Smithfield will be participating in the dedication by contributing artifacts that will be placed inside the capsule that will be reopened 50 years from now on June 7th 2068.
We are also inviting Lions clubs in our district that have pins, to participate in this dedication by placing the pins in the capsule. The Capsule is stainless steel, symmetrical, and the dimensions are: 12 inches in diameter and 24 inches tall. It will be placed in a brick pedestal completely encapsulated inside the brick structure with a plaque on the top of the pedestal.
The Smithfield High School Leo Club is working on their own legacy project at the park. Matt Lemon, son of Lion Katie Lemon and Leo Club advisor, is working on installing 16 devices on the park walking trails that sight impaired individuals will be able to use a smart phone and receive an audible explanation of that part of the trail.
I thank District Governor Beth with entrusting me with this project.

Hello Lions
I had a great time at the Winter Social last weekend. Please mark your calendars—April 7th is Leadership Training Day for the district it will be in Poquoson. See the article included in this newsletter for the details. I hope to see as many Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, New Members and Lions there. It will be lots of fun and some good information will be put out.
I hope everyone is doing fine with the flu that has been going around, so please take care.
I am still looking for some cabinet members. I still need Region and Zone chairs, so we need some Lions to step up and help out. Thank you to the Lions that have already accepted positions on the cabinet.
Keep up the great job you are doing.

Greetings Fellow Lions,
We are moving forward with our year.
I had a great time with our fellow Lions at the Winter Conference in Williamsburg. It was a beautiful location with beautiful people. We had the opportunity to hear vital information. This was a good time to get to know everyone. We will have more helping hands in the up coming year.
Is everyone ready for the upcoming Region meetings? I can’t wait to see you all there!! We will have fun and fellowship. Try to invite a new lion to be a part of the pride.
Has everyone been able to sign-up on the MyLion App? We are still looking for club events so that we can network together. If you have any questions concerning the MyLion app give me a call. And Remember the “POWER OF WE”.

Lions Deliver Lifesaving AEDs to Churches of King William County
King William County Lions Club, 10 local churches, the King William Volunteer Fire and Rescue Depart-ment and the Lions Charity Foundation of District 24D teamed up in a joint venture to help churches in King William County prepare for unexpected Cardiac Emergencies through the acquisition of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). King William County residents are located in remote areas that experience long EMS response times. AEDs, if used quickly, can save individuals experiencing cardiac arrest while waiting for the arrival of EMS personnel. AED Cardiac equipment can instantly start directing a rescue with clear voice prompts and deliver a lifesaving defibrillating shock to stimulate a cardiac arrested heart, helping save lives when seconds matter.
Employing a coordinated effort of cooperation, ten AEDs and special First Aid/CPR/AED training provided by the King William County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department was acquired to make this project a re-sounding success. The following churches participated and received their AEDs during a special AED presen-tation held at the Crossroads Mission Center on Monday, February 12, 2018 in King William: Baptist Liberty, Bethlehem Baptist, MeKendree Baptist, Mt. Nebo, Mt Sinai, New Morning Star, Providence Baptist, Third Union, Trinity and Union Hope.
Lion Douglas Riley, President of the King William County Lions Club saw the need and submitted the grant to LCF24D. Lion Jerry Phelps, Grants Chair and the Grants Committee approved the request and Lion Jerry Phelps acquired the defibrillators through one of LCF’s medical Equipment suppliers.
Representatives of the Lions Charity Foundation of District 24-D, Lion Don Fuller, LCF24D Past President and Jerry Phelps, LCF24D Treasurer with District Zone A Rep Lion Mike Petty, King William County Lions Club President Lion Doug Riley and representatives from 10 Kings William County Churches. Churches were presented with Lifesaving AEDs by LCF24D
during special ceremony at Crossroads Mission Center.

More than one hundred people enjoyed the recent Charter Night Dinner Gala at Two Rivers Country Club
on February 9th. The venue, food, and service were outstanding and the sunset over the James River was
spectacular. Twenty years ago, the Williamsburg Host Lions Club, several members of whom were in attend-
ance for this gala, sponsored the creation of a new club to expand Lions service into James City County. This
resulted in the chartering of the James City Lions Club on Feb 10, 1998. Seven of the original 28 charter
members remain in this strong and active 74 member club. It is estimated that James City Lions Club mem-
bers have worked more than 8,000 hours in volunteer service to achieve the Lions mission and help beautify
the community. Special guests for the celebration included Lion Jeff Gaddis, 1st Vice District Governor and
Region Chair Lion Pat Kerr. Additionally, Lion Ann Ragland, District Governor from 24B was in attendance.
Kudos go to overall project leader Lion Dave Hartsough and his committee who worked tirelessly to insure a
fun and highly successful evening. The two photos below help capture the evening. Pictured (from left) in the
top photo are the seven charter members Bob Gordon, Bill Pritchard, Pam Lundberg, Jack Reitz, Lewis Har-
ris, John Kincaid, Merv Frantz along with Club President Phil Giles.

First grease a medium sized cake pan,
preheat oven to 325 degrees F,
mix 1 egg – 1 tsp flour – 1 cup milk – package of cake mix – 1 cup sugar and 2 T of butter in a large bowl
beat for 35 strokes
pour contents of the bowl into greased pan
Bake on the center rack at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
These are very specific instructions on how to bake a cake. If you have never done it before or even if you merely want outstanding results it is imperative to follow the directions exactly as written, especially the first few times.
We have all wished there was a recipe for getting and keeping members in our club. Now there is, its called the Ohio Plan. It’s a Structured Method of finding and recruiting new members by hosting a membership event. The designers of this plan say it works every time ( if you follow directions ). Some of the key components are
* Make recruiting members an important project * Work as a team – everyone is on the membership committee * Every decision of the team makes a positive impression on the prospect * PLAN out the event
The Venue The Menu The agenda The Speaker The Closing Objective – to get people to join our club Follow up Communications – Involvement.
* Each current member refers at least 7 prospects – names, phone, cell, address, info – kids, occupation, age etc.
* Use the target market Recruiting Wheel ( slide 9 in the PowerPoint ) * Be on our best behavior * Working as a team
The greeting The seating Materials Start and End on time The Closing Pitch
AND THERE’S MORE including “Now that they’re in, Now what?”
This is a great plan with sample letters and a PowerPoint presentation so you can explain it to your club. I have included Jerome Thompsons Ready set grow materials with excellent videos and an electronic membership application all in my Dropbox. Here is the web address:
