Lions of Virginia, District 24-D

It’s hard to believe that this Lion’s year is nearly over when there is still so much work to do. Just because it’s June doesn’t mean that the needs in our communities will cease, so we can’t either. Please continue serving, leading and recruiting just like you did in the beginning of the year. Not only do we need to keep this mental attitude in our clubs, we need to keep this positive attitude about the future as well. Although the proud history of District 24 D will end on June 30, 2018, the Lion’s history of serving Southeastern Virginia will continue uninterrupted.

Beginning on July 1, 2018 we all will be Lions of District 24 I. Congratulations to our recently elected officers: District Governor Jeff Gaddis, 1st Vice District Governor Lewis Adams and 2nd Vice District Governor Pat Jones. Let’s all support our new leadership team as we write the first chapter of our new history.

Speaking of setting new trends, I’m confident that we’ll see several innovative ideas from our newest club Southeastern Virginia Filipino – American Lions Club. The club was chartered on May 18, 2018 sponsored by the Thalia Lions Club. All Lions are invited to their Charter Celebration on Saturday, June 23, at the Holiday Inn on Greenwich Road in Virginia Beach. Put on your dancing shoes, I hear a rumor there will be a DJ to enliven the event.

Another new trend comes from Lions Clubs International with the introduction of MyLion for Web. Last year, MyLion mobile was launched as a way for Lions around the world to plan, invite, and post service projects. In July, MyLion for web will be launched. This is a computer desktop version of the app that clubs will use to report their service projects to LCI. Don’t panic, we have a year to learn how to use both the mobile and web versions of the app. LCI is encouraging everyone who is ready to use MyLion Web to begin using it next year, but MyLCI can still be used for service activity reporting throughout the coming year. LCI will be combining service activity reports for both systems so that reports will be accurate no matter which platform you or your Lions are using. Innovations like the MyLion for Web reporting system are important to the present and future of Lions. Training materials will be coming to us soon.

On a final note, I hope you’ll join us at the District meeting on June 13, in Smithfield. I’d enjoy the opportunity to thank all of you in person for the generous support I’ve received all year. It has truly been my honor to serve as your District Governor. I want to thank everyone who served on the Cabinet. It’s been my pleasure to lead this extraordinary team of Lions in 2017 – 2018.

Lions

I had a great time at the State Convention this year. I would like to take the time to thank everyone that was there and voted for me—I thank you. We had some good training as well as some great speakers and good fellowship. Friday night we listened to some very talented young singers and instrumentalists at the State Bland Competition.

I hope to see everyone at the last District meeting of 24D, June 14th in Smithfield. Please come and support your district governor at her last meeting of the year. Let's finish the year out strong and on a good note.

The MyLion for the Web is the way forward for Lions Clubs International, so let's get connected to it now. It will be how you report your club’s service projects starting July 1, 2018. However, if you prefer, you may use MyLCI instead for this reporting until 30 June, 2019. This will give you one year to learn the new system. You will still have to report your membership information and monthly membership reports on MyLCI.

Clubs, please make sure your new officers have been entered into MyLCI.

I'm now getting ready for the International Convention at the end of the month, followed by the beginning of a new year and new district. Clubs, keep up the great job you are doing for your community, club, district and Lions Clubs International.

I want to thank everyone who supported my election as your 2nd Vice District Governor for 2018 - 2019. I’m

looking forward to another exciting year. I’m pleased to announce that Lions – Anthem Volunteer Days are

back again.

Once again Lions Clubs International is partnering with the Anthem Foundation for Lions – Anthem Volunteer Days, a two month-long community service event, taking place locally in Richmond, Norfolk and Virginia Beach this fall. Lions – Anthem Volunteer Days is a special opportunity to:

• Engage Lions and Anthem Associates in service events focusing on health and wellness • Increase the impact and visibility of our community service nationwide • Give back to our local communities Your club will receive information from LCI soon regarding the project. Clubs should begin preparing project ideas to request funding for proposed projects. Grants range from $1,000 to $1,500. Some partnerships in the past included: Virginia Beach Bags part of the Virginia Beach Public School Division, StandUp for Kids, Cleaning the beaches in partnership with the City of Norfolk, Smiles Across the Miles in partnership with the USO. Projects must take place within 30 miles of an Anthem office, be hands-on, be family friendly, and support 75 or more volunteers. Keep in mind the health and wellness aspect of project proposals. Lions are proud to be part of the growing corporate social responsibility movement partnering with Anthem Foundation, Anthem Inc. and its national network of dedicated associates.

The Annual Meeting for the Lions Charity Foundation of District 24-D will be held June 13, at the Smithfield Center beginning at 5:00 PM, just prior to the final District Meeting. Please be sure to send a club representative to this meeting. It’s essential that we have a quorum to conduct elections and other important business.

There are proposed changes to the Foundation concerning the merger. This is your Foundation and we’re here to support your club. Here is the latest information from the third quarterly meeting.

A seven year old child received cataract surgery sponsored by the Warrick Lions Club. Two adults were referred to Hampton Roads Eye Associates for cataract surgeries. One person received an Ocular Prosthetic. Fitness bracelets were purchased for the children attending the Lions District 24-D Diabetes Camp. Seven Lions Clubs applied for twenty hearing aids on behalf of people in need in their communities.

Our Bid ‘N Buy Committee is up and running already planning for another great auction this year. If you would like to volunteer for the committee please contact Lion Marc Van Eck at [email protected].

State Bland Competition

District 24-D had two winners at the Bland Competition held at the State Convention. Kurt Lannetti was the 3rd place vocal winner ($1,500.00 scholarship) and Kendall Gonzales was the 4th place winner ( $1,000.00 scholarship). Kurt was from Bayside Lions Club and Kendall was from Williamsburg Host Lions Club.

Location: Windsor Castle Park, Smithfield, Virginia

Please join us as we dedicate the Leo Time Capsule at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield, Virginia. Prior to the dedication enjoy food, refreshments and soft drinks at the dedication site.

The Leo Time Capsule was built by Edwards Sheet Metal of Smithfield. The Smithfield Leo Club helped in prepare the site for construction, the bricklayer has finished and the Leo Time Capsule site is ready for dedi-cation. Contents of the Capsule include items donated by the Leo Clubs of Smithfield, Poquoson and Lancas-ter as well as Lions Clubs of District 24-D.

Located on the time capsule site is a plaque with the following inscription:

Lions LEO Club Time Capsule

This Time Capsule is a historic cashe of LEO Club history intended to enrich LEOs in the year 2068. The contents were

donated by Smithfield, Poquoson and Lancaster High Schools, as well as

Lions Clubs of District 24-D.

This capsule was dedicated by District Governor Beth Stevens in honor of the Centennial Celebration of Lions Clubs

International.

Lions 101

The Lions 101 Program was developed to strengthen clubs across District 24D and fulfill our Mission State-ment. District Governor Beth Stevens and her Executive team visited all 57 clubs with a simple message. Please pledge to do 4 tasks to help your club become stronger in this one hundred and first Lions Year! A new millennium, a new challenge – Lions across the District were asked to:

Lead through Service - Volunteer 101 hours with the Lions

Donate your time in a way that best fits your community’s needs

Connect with Community - Make 1 presentation about Lions in the community

Host a Lions table at a community event, Place information on Lions in your public library, or Invite community partners to your club meeting to say “thank you”

Invite for Impact - Recruit at least 1 new member

Invite friends to a service project, Wear your Lions pin with pride every day, and Always have a Lions business card handy

Leave a Leadership Legacy - Participate in 5 hours of Leadership training

Take any course in the Lions Learning Center, Enroll in a LCI webinar, or

Attend Lions Leadership Training Day

The program is simple but requires time and effort! I am so proud that 150 Lions, almost one member from every club, took the challenge and pledged to try to do the steps. I am happy to report that to date we have 26 members that we know have completed the challenge. The only thing we can really track is the new member adds. DG Beth and I want to congratulate these Lions by reprinting their pictures. CONGRATULATIONS! Club members of these hard working Lions need to congratulate them on a job well done. If you have possible new members this would be a great time to bring them in. LCI is waiving the entrance fee for new members from June 7th until June 30th! What a great way to start off that new member. Offer them the opportunity to pay the $35 which could pay their first few months of dues payments. Many of you have asked me what DG Beth would like as a gift at year end. If you know my wife, you may realize she is very goal oriented. She wants to meet her goal of having more members at the end of the year than the beginning. Besides that, I know you pin traders will want this pin in your collection. If all the clubs in 24D would bring in 1 more new mem-ber we would crush this goal! Most of the clubs still have 1 more bored (not misspelled) meeting, it would be great to give out an extra 57 pins at the first district meeting of the new year. I know it has never been done – what better reason to do it now as a lasting tribute to District 24D!

Greater Williamsburg Community Kitchen

Every month, James City Lions provides a lunch for almost 40 people who came to the Greater Williamsburg Community Kitchen (GWCK). Hunger relief is one more way that Lions serve the community beyond their core missions of sight, hearing and diabetes. In addition to serving lunch, the Lions also make vision screening available—twenty-three were recently screened and nine were referred for further evaluation.
