Aerobics The purpose of aerobics is to promote cardio-vascular fitness, tone, and strengthen muscles, and increase range of motion. This class utilizes the Wii gaming system for instruction. Facili-tated by GCC staff.

Aging With Attitude Everyone, especially those age fifty and older, is welcome to learn about how to live a vigorous life with health and passion. We explore topics of importance to seniors.

Anger Management/Court Ordered Anger Management Anger Management is an open group for members to process their personal experience with anger and receive support with expressing their anger in more constructive and effective ways. The psycho-educational component of the group helps members to learn the difference between normal anger and problem anger, understand its impact on social, occupational and daily functioning, and learn how to identify the triggers that can lead to uncontrollable anger. Coping skills are discussed and practiced, including relaxation techniques and art therapy. The group offers an educational and emotionally supportive forum to learn, discuss, and practice new skills in a safe and confidential environment. $20/class for court ordered partici-pants.

Art Club Come join us for this fun group that utilizes art as a medium to socialize and interact with your peers. We’ll encourage artistic and verbal expression. All supplies are provided.

Art Therapy This specialized program uses art therapy techniques to help members work through their issues and express themselves through creative projects. Qualified clinical professionals lead the groups, one hour per week.

Grace Community Center (membership required)

The Grace Community Center, located in downtown San Jose, serves adults with Mental Illness and other Cognitive Disabili-ties. The Center provides drop-in recreation activities, nutri-tion, and self help skills groups. You must become a Member* of the Center in order to par-ticipate in all activities located on the premises, with the ex-ception of Monthly Dances and Annual Special Events (offered in October, November, and December). Most activities are free with membership unless otherwise noted. Drop in activities include art & music groups, process and sup-port groups, nutrition & exercise programs, and programs which teach daily living skills. We also offer access to fitness equipment, a computer lab, a pool table; and other lounge type areas where you can relax with music, television, or just socialize with other members. The Center also offers volunteer opportunities. To learn about opportunities for students and other community members, contact Jo Eclevia at 408-293-0422. We also provide opportu-nities for those needing to fulfill Court Ordered obligations. For more information on Court Ordered Volunteer opportunities, please contact Teresa Olague at 408-293-0422. Volunteer Orientation is held on Wednesdays at 9:30 am. Persons applying for a new Grace Membership* will need: 1. A completed GCC membership application 2. A picture I.D. 3. $5.00 cash payment 4. To attend the New Member Orientation Meeting. Art Time This groups utilizes a variety of art mediums to create art work that will be displayed in the Center for the community’s appre-ciation and enjoyment. The group promotes connecting with others through the medium of art.

Arts and Crafts Members gain self-confidence and enjoyment through creating art projects they can take home, give as gifts, or display at the Center. A variety of fun and creative projects are offered, in-cluding card making, collages, mosaics, and more.

Band Jam Seasoned rock musicians connect and “jam” as a band play-ing popular and original songs and tunes.

Basketball Our basketball program encourages healthy competition for the ambitious player, builds communication and teamwork skills, and promotes fitness and exercise.

Beading Members learn how to make beautiful beaded jewelry and decorative pieces using a variety of beads. Special tools and materials are used to demonstrate and teach techniques. All are encouraged to develop and create their own unique, eye catching pieces.

Bingo Come play a friendly game of Bingo! GCC’s member- facili-tated program offers a great opportunity for socialization and group cooperation. Players are given two bingo cards and can win one prize per week.

Book Club Book lovers meet and enjoy reading and discussing interesting and beloved books.

Boundaries Group for Women 8-week psycho-educational women’s group focusing on build-ing safety skills, improving communication skills, practicing good boundaries, and having healthy relationships. New groups every quarter.

Breakfast Club Breakfast Club offers members a hands-on opportunity to cook healthy breakfast foods in order to jump start their day. Participants follow recipes, learn cooking techniques, explore new ingredients and develop healthy eating habits. In addition, learning how to cook together promotes socialization. im-proves mood and increases self-esteem. Space is limited to 6 participants.

Clothes Closet The clothes closet offers members a “thrift store” style shop-ping experience for free. The program encourages a clean, healthy appearance and builds a confident self-image. All clothes and accessories are donated by community members and agencies.

Community Meeting This daily group offers a place for members to discuss issues of daily living in our community, ask questions or share concerns, and learn about GCC programs and services. The group offers a supportive, interesting, and educational environ-ment and is designed to increase each member’s awareness and participation in the Center.

Co-Occurring Disorders- NEW GROUP! This group provides a safe, positive and therapeutic environ-ment where members will be empowered to learn coping skills vital to their recovery and to manage symptoms of mental ill-ness. The group will explore stages of change, immediate and long-term needs, cultural factors and the identification of strengths and support systems.

Creative Writing Writers of all abilities express their unique creativity and reflect on group or individual themes. Sharing of these thoughts, sto-ries, journals, poems, and prose is especially honored and encouraged by all.

Cultural Exposure (CATS) Enjoy monthly community events such as sports, plays, mov-ies, museums, concerts and more! These events are made possible by CATS. Community Access Ticket Service (CATS) is a Bay Area group that provides low cost access to tickets/admission to area recreation and cultural activities. Spaces are limited. Check with GCC staff for upcoming events.

Eat and Art Join us in a fun program where you can be creative, enjoy meals, and socialize.

Entertainer The Entertainer is a “talent show” that welcomes all talents. Members bring a song, story, poem, dance, or joke to share with their peers. Using the GCC entertainment system includ-ing microphone and large screen TV, entertainers dazzle the audience with original works and popular music selections.

G90x G90x is a complete fitness system designed to get GCC mem-bers in the best shape of their life. This program includes 5 intense work-outs that use resistance and body-weight train-ing, cardio, plyometrics, abdominal work, balance training, along with a nutrition plan and work-out calendar.

Just Gorgeous Beauty Salon and Hygiene Class This instructional program, for both men and women, offers custom eye make-up application and eye brow shaping for members by staff. Learn some make-up application tech-niques and grooming skills and boost your self-esteem. Talk about basic hygiene and daily care. Appointments required.

Leisure Walk Outing This group travels to walking destinations throughout Santa Clara County, including malls, hiking trails, parks, and down-town areas. Walking is healthy exercise and enjoyable too. Join this group for some cardiovascular exercise.

Life Skills This group deals with the real world basics, assisting individu-als in developing skills in many practical areas of life and over-coming barriers to maintaining these skills from day to day.

Lunch Program GCC serves a hot, well balanced lunch Monday through Satur-day. Suggested donation is $0.75 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; Wednesdays is $0.50 and Saturdays $1.00. Suggested donation for entire week is $3.00.

Men’s Group Men are offered the opportunity to gather together and dis-cuss “guy stuff”. Facilitator brings discussion topics and ac-tivities and welcomes concerns and contributions from the group.

Monthly Dances/Special Events GCC hosts festive dances featuring talented DJ’s and live bands that perform for the crowds dancing and listening en-joyment. Dances are held on the second Friday of every other month starting in February, except for October, No-vember and December when we host very special events. Admission varies from $2- $4. Snacks are provided.

Movie Matinee/Movie Morning Come see the latest DVD releases and popular classics on GCC’s big screen. Snacks are provided.

New You Hair and Nail Salon Come and get your hair trimmed by area salon profession-als. You can also have a manicure done by community vol-unteers. Call the Center at 408-293-0422 for an appoint-ment. You must come with clean hair.

News Grabbers A discussion group to raise awareness of GCC members and inspire their participation in the local community, as well as focusing on state, national, and international affairs as reported in the news. Come share your knowledge and learn more about the world in which we live.

Nutrition Awareness Licensed nutritionists from Second Harvest Food Bank, teach this nutrition/health awareness group. Members learn to be healthy with good nutrition and exercise information to help control diabetes and weight.

Open Art Studio This open studio is great for artists of all skill levels. Group offers various media including 3-D materials, acrylic and water based paint, and drawing materials. Artists work independently and are supported by staff and volunteers.

Open Gym Open Gym is a combination of Basketball & G90x. This pro-gram offers members an opportunity to enjoy a structured game of 5 on 5 basketball on the basketball court and another opportunity to achieve their fitness goals on the GBC stage.

Painting & Drawing Further your ability and understanding of 2-D art. Develop a strong sense of design through decision-making and problem-solving projects that may include media such as graphite, oil or chalk pastels, colored pencil, and marker. Members will also explore the style of many artists throughout history, while developing their own paintings. Figures, landscapes, and still-life subjects are considered and studied.

Photography Group This group allows members to explore the world around them in a brand new way. Members increase their creativity and artistic talent by learning basic camera skills and attending periodic outings to scenic Bay Area spots.

Relaxation Skills This group offers deep breathing exercise with progressive relaxation in order to maintain calm and to manage anxiety and anger throughout the day.

Resource Hour During this hour, staff is devoted to referring and connecting participants individually to information and resources in the community and online.

Sewing By Appointment Members of all skill levels in sewing may request a thirty min-ute appointment with skilled staff to work 1:1 on individual pro-jects. All supplies are provided.

Sewing, Knitting, and Crocheting This course is geared toward all levels of experience in sew-ing, and needle crafters. Members are encouraged to use their creative skills to make a variety of projects. They can also mend, hem, and make minor repairs to clothing. All equip-ment and supplies are provided.

Stained Glass All phases of the art of stained glass are taught within this class, including project design, glass cutting and shaping, lead soldiering and glass cleaning. A variety of colored and tex-tured glass is available. Space is limited. Materials fee of $6 per class.

Swimming Enjoy laps or wading in the relaxing pool at San Jose State. Bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, and towel. Meet at Grace CC, then we’ll walk over together as a group.

U Grill It The U Grill It class will focus on easy to prepare breakfast and lunch dishes. Each class will feature a single dish. 25 cent donation.

Voices and Delusions Support Group This group is a 12-week clinical group allowing members to gain knowledge about mental illness, coping skills, medica-tions, resources, and stigma. Members will be encouraged to share their personal journey in an effort to grow in a supportive and confidential environment.

Wii Time Utilizing the Nintendo Wii gaming system, make new friends and socialize while engaging in some friendly competition and exercise with a variety of fun games.

Yoga Learn relaxing, gentle stretches and basic Hatha Yoga tech-niques to build a sense of inner peace and positive thinking, while decreasing stress and increasing overall sense of flexi-bility, health, and wellness.
