In Baseball Bonanza, students will make mathematical connections, examine numbers and number relationships, and use computation, estimation, and statistics. Students will choose a city in California and create their very own team. After decorating their jersey and pendant, students will use their draft list to draft players from Major League Baseball teams. Students may choose players according to position and place them in a batting lineup. Each day the students will fill out a Daily Scoring Form using the sports section of the Orange County Register from this year’s baseball season to identify the at bats, runs scored, hits and runs batted in for each of their players. At the end of the week we will calculate battering averages and statistics will be graphed. Points for each team will be kept on the board and we will decide as a League what the winner will receive. Once the mathematics portion of Baseball Bonanza is completed each morning, students will work on a research project by conducting research in the library and with online data bases to find information about their favorite professional player. Students will have use a Power Point template to create a final presentation that they may present to the class. Last but certainly not least, we will have the opportunity to play the game of baseball right here at SMES! Grades: 3, 4, 5Offered: Week 1, 3, AM sessionInstructor: Kristina Garruba

Have Books. Will Travel! – online book clubWhen someone finds out you’re going on vacation (especially on a plane), they often ask; “So what are you going to read?” Our students tend to respond in one of two ways; they list a dozen books and are grateful for their e-reader or they deflect and murmur something about watching movies instead. But whether your family is traveling to a different continent or kicking it in your own backyard, we’ve got a great new course this summer. Our online book clubs will encourage the students to read more books, engage them in new stories, expand their vocabulary and creativity, and entertain them throughout the summer. We will have book chats, debates, create “movie trailers,” write critiques, and in general just keep your child reading the whole summer long. Best of all - they can participate from ANYWHERE!Grades: 5, 6, 7Offered: online throughout the summerFee: $50Instructors: Jeni Johnson and Darla Magana

Who Do You Think You Are?!We’re all products of our nature and nurture. You’ve been nurtured, so you know all about that. But what about your nature? Why do you love to sing? To take things apart? To run? Those come from your genes. And your genes come from your ancestors. In this class, you’ll learn how to ask the right questions and use the right resources to climb around in your family tree. Along the way you’ll make some fun discoveries, and maybe uncover some skeleton’s in the closet. But no matter what, you’ll learn more about why you are the way you are!Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8Offered: Week 1, AM sessionInstructor: Stacey Miles
