We are pleased that you have chosen California State University,Northridge for your graduate work and we welcome you to ourcampus. The Graduate School is committed to the development of

scholarly leaders through outstanding graduate programs that requirestudents to demonstrate critical thinking and analysis, the ability to

integrate theory and practice, and creativity in scholarly endeavors.

CSUN offers fifty-seven graduate degrees in which students work

closely with the faculty in their program on the degree requirements.

Prospective and current graduate students should be familiar with

the requirements of the program they plan to complete and should

complete a written plan with a faculty advisor outlining require-ments to be satisfied. Each graduate program has a coordinator

who is prepared to offer program information and advisement.

This handbook is intended to supplement the information about

individual programs that can be found in the University Catalog. It

reiterates all the minimum university requirements and policies that

all masters degree students must meet. Most programs have addi-

tional or higher requirements in at least some of the areas discussed.

In addition, this handbook contains information about available

scholarships, fellowships, research opportunities and various rules

    and regulations.

    1. STEPS TO THE GRADUATE DEGREE

    2. GRADUATE STATUS

    Classified

Classified graduate students are those who have met all criteria forclassification in their respective programs. The criteria for classification

may be more stringent in some departments, but are never less than

    the minimum criteria listed below:

Maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all work taken

after completion of a Bachelors degree.

Hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution.

Score at or above the 50th percentile on one of the three subject areas

of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Some departments

waive the GRE requirement if students undergraduate cumulative

grade point average is 3.0 or higher.

If required, satisfactory performance on departmental admissions

assessments approved by the University (e.g., art, music, theatre).

Students must pass the Upper Division Writing Proficienty

Examination (UDWPE). Students having met the UDWPE at

another CSU campus may submit for approval, in writing, official

notification of a passing score from their previous university toCSUNs UDWPE Office in Bayramian Hall, 408.

The Graduate Coordinator can inform you of the specific requirements

for Classified Status in your program.

experience. Please seek advice from your graduate coordinator. When

a thesis is involved, the student must file the Thesis/Graduate Project
