November 2012

Welcome to the november 2012 edition of Petrofacts.

I am often impressed by the fresh approach that young talent brings to our business. This is a good thing, as they are, after all, the future of Petrofac and of our industry. Their ideas and enthusiasm, combined with the mentoring, skills development and hands on experience that Petrofac provides, creates an ideal environment in which they can develop and excel.

To nurture our graduate pipeline potential we are promoting science and technology in schools. Getting pupils interested in these topics at an early stage may influence subject choices which could lead to a career in engineering and other related oil & gas disciplines being chosen. Partnership initiatives, such as our ten year relationship with a local school in Aberdeen, Scotland, and a series of mentoring programmes for disadvantaged school children which have been established by our Woking office in England, can increase the profile of engineering and inspire a new generation.

In 2009 we established another important partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering to engage some of the UK’s top engineering talent, enabling these individuals to hone their skills through a year-long Masters programme. The Petrofac Engineering Fellowships are now in their fourth year and to date we have supported 17 Fellows to complete their studies, with six of them going on to join Petrofac. I’d like to congratulate the recently appointed Fellows for the 2012 programme and wish them all success in their Masters programme and future careers.

At Petrofac, we are a diverse team with a dynamic mix of skills and talents, but whether an experienced professional or recent graduate, we are all unified across Petrofac through living our values. These values – to be safe, ethical, innovative, quality and cost conscious, responsive and driven to deliver – shape the way in which we do business, they differentiate us, inspire our success and guide our decisions.

Our annual employee awards programme, the EVE Awards is now in its second year. The programme recognises and celebrates the hard work of our colleagues and the desire to always go above and beyond expectations through living our values. We’ve recently announced the finalists for the 2012 programme and will announce the winners at our annual leadership event later this month. We’ll be profiling the finalists and some of their achievements in the next edition of Petrofacts.

In the meantime, I’d like to wish all the applicants the very best of luck and I hope you enjoy this edition.

It is an important and exciting time. In this edition we highlight some of our more recent achievements from across the Group. While on pages 10 and 11 I have provided an update on our strategic and sustainable growth priorities as we work towards achieving our vision and our 2015 targets.

Our people are the lifeblood of our growth journey. In an environment where skilled resources are scarce we do not underestimate the importance of attracting and retaining great talent. We aim to offer the right people a fulfilling career in a challenging but supportive environment. People join our Group from many different backgrounds and with differing levels of experience. Some have significant experience in our industry, while others have joined us from a different industry altogether. For many, we represent a first step on the proverbial career ladder which – as a large international organisation – offers plenty of opportunity for potential diversification and progression.

As our cover story demonstrates, we attract some of the best talent our industry has to offer in the form of graduates. Around 150 talented graduates joined structured programmes across our Group this year. They can expect to have their talent and enthusiasm nurtured, while they develop the skills and attributes necessary for a long career in such a dynamic and fast paced industry.

at the time of writing, here in the UK we are in the midst of autumn and the turning colour of the leaves indicates it is that time of year in the annual corporate cycle when forward planning co-exists with reflection. future plans are being put in place, while we monitor our achievements this year against what still needs to be done.

In the last ten years, Petrofac has grown from a team of 1,000 employees to an international business with around 17,200 people in 29 countries. Petrofac’s ability to harness and develop the leaders and thinkers of the future is an extremely important part of sustaining and expanding on our current and past success. One way of doing this has been through our graduate schemes that now run across the business.

The schemes vary according to our locations but all provide an opportunity for new recruits to benefit from relevant skills development, mentoring and hands on experience; all of which are designed to underpin our existing expertise and ensure that it is passed on through the business to support future growth.

Offering a five-year ‘future generation programme’ to graduates, our annual graduate intake in Sharjah has continually expanded over the last eight years. In 2012 we welcomed 96 new graduates, qualified with first-class engineering degrees from leading universities in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Nigeria and China, to name just a few. On completion of their initial induction, the scheme sees them undertake a formal classroom-based training programme, supported by assignments to our projects and construction sites that are

appropriate to their own engineering discipline.

Peter Martin, Organisational Development Director, Onshore Engineering & Construction, reflects on the success of the programme in Sharjah: “Our graduate programme began in 2004 with only 25 graduates. This number has steadily increased and for the last few years we have been taking on around 100 newly qualified graduates annually making the total number of graduates and post-graduates in Sharjah today in excess of 400, which is extremely promising for the future of Petrofac.”

Recruiting the best talent through methods like this is one thing, but ensuring that the individuals receive the best training, development and opportunities to maximise their potential is where graduate programmes can really come into their own. The schemes are generally

designed to be a two-way development process; with the graduates asked what they themselves want to achieve as well as being able to experience the benefit of existing, more structured training initiatives already in place.

Our Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO) graduate scheme, where numbers have almost doubled from 2011 to 2012, is another good example of this type of tailored development. The recruits here span a wide variety of disciplines from various types of engineering to commercial, human resources and supply chain; each are given a generic and technical training plan and a mentor to guide them through their programme. They are also supported and encouraged to pursue their relevant professional membership or Chartership; with the overarching priority that Petrofac helps them to become well-rounded professionals. Graduates are encouraged to reach such milestones at a pace that is right for them; not for the sake of it or at the expense of gaining sound, fundamental experience.

The OPO scheme has gained accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Our new Graduate Construction Programme has also gained accreditation with

PETROFAC TO SPONSOR TALENTED MExICAN POSTGRADUATESThe Petrofac team in Mexico has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to sponsor talented Mexican students undertaking postgraduate studies in the UK under the highly regarded Chevening Scholarship scheme.

The Chevening Scholarship scheme, awarded by the FCO, is a prestigious and highly competitive programme aimed at students from around the world who demonstrate potential to be future leaders in academia, politics, social sciences or business. Established in 1983, the scholarship enables young people to study at the UK’s top universities.

Petrofac will sponsor one individual every year, starting with the first student in 2012. Nearly 40,000 students have studied in the UK under the scheme since it was established nearly 30 years ago. Among them are the former Prime Ministers of Georgia and Bulgaria, former President of Colombia and a number of business and community leaders.

The signing ceremony, which took place in Mexico City, was attended by Judith McGregor, British Ambassador to Mexico, and Lord Green, UK’s Minister of Trade and Industry. Petrofac was represented by Isabel Miranda, Government and Community Relations Manager.

Isabel commented: “We are delighted to offer bright young people an opportunity to further their education at the UK’s top teaching institutions. The Chevening Scholarship scheme helps to develop future leaders, who will make a positive impact on their communities for many years to come.”

CALTEC GRADUATE LEADS UNIqUE HANDbOOK PROJECT Abdullah Rehman joined Caltec, part of Integrated Energy Services, as a chemical engineering graduate in September 2011. Since then, he has worked on a number of projects, one of which was to manage the publication of an engineers’ handbook, unique to the oil & gas industry. Petrofacts caught up with Abdullah to find out more.

‘The Engineers’ Handbook for Surface Jet Pumps for Enhanced Oil & Gas Production’, published recently by Caltec, is proving very popular with our customers. Can you tell us more about the book? The purpose of the project was to educate oil & gas industry professionals about Surface Jet Pump (SJP) technology, its wide range of applications and associated benefits. To achieve this, we brought together knowledge from within Caltec and our manufacturing partner Transvac to create a handbook for engineers. The handbook covers SJP application identification and solution design, supported by many relevant case studies.

what was your involvement in the project? As the Project Manager, I co-ordinated the content development and print, with guidance and input from Colin Morrison, Managing Director, Caltec, and the principal handbook authors: Dr. Najam Beg, Technology Director, and Sacha Sarshar, Chief Technology Officer, both from Caltec. The project took six months from the planning stage to print, but it is really the end result of years of research and experience of the principal authors.

Has the experience been useful to you as a graduate? The project provided me with a great opportunity to learn from our Subject Matter Experts and I enjoyed having this responsibility early on in my role at Caltec. During the production process I learned a lot about the fundamentals of SJP technology and its applications and the upstream oil & gas industry in a very short timeframe. I am delighted to have played a part in the creation of the handbook, which is being enthusiastically received by the petroleum and process engineering community around the world. It really has exceeded all of our expectations.

the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB). All add additional credibility to the scheme in the UK.

Under a slightly different graduate recruitment model, we also work in partnership with many educational institutions around the world. In August, 20 engineering graduates joined us as part of our collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), all of whom are undertaking their graduate engineer training with Petrofac. Petrofac in Malaysia will also offer UTM’s engineering students a variety of opportunities for work placements, participation in knowledge sharing forums and a place on our local graduate engineering programme.

Speaking during his first few weeks with us, UTM graduate Syed Mohd Hazrin, told Petrofacts about his thoughts so far: “I feel very enthusiastic about the programme; I am learning new things and adapting to the working environment. I think it will be very beneficial for my career and I can clearly see a career path ahead of me thanks to the time I can spend with my mentor. I hope that everyone in the graduate programme learns and makes the most of the experience in order to become successful engineers now and in the future.”

With other similar initiatives running in many of our locations including India and Woking, our focus on graduate recruitment is one of a number of ways that Petrofac is preparing itself for growth over the next few years. With 91% of graduates hired since 2008 remaining with us today, the future looks extremely positive for all of us.

STRATEGy FOCUS

Positioned for growth

I am very excited about these growth initiatives and I am confident they will deliver for us in the future. However, it is today’s performance and the work we are doing for our existing customers that forms the foundation for growth in the future and our first priority is to execute our current projects and contracts to the highest standards.

Ensuring we can deliver in this way is so important for us that we have dedicated time this year to look at our own internal process – to ensure they are robust, efficient and sustainable. This internal project (we called it “Fit for 2015”) has generated a set of actions intended to strengthen our organisation and continue the development of our capabilities and competency.

These internal initiatives will give us a strong base from which to grow – to deliver on our financial goals and set us on a clear path towards our vision, to become the world’s most admired oilfield service company.

We have always been very selective and focused in our approach to geographic expansion with the emphasis on quality rather than quantity. We have prioritised resource rich countries where Petrofac’s capability is uniquely positioned to add value and we have invested time and effort in ensuring we can deliver confidently in these new locations. As a result, we have developed a strong reputation for delivering on our promises, even in challenging environments and against fast-track timescales.

A year ago, I reported progress in a number of new markets including Iraq, Nigeria and Mexico and during the past year we have been building upon our operations in each of these locations. We have won two further contracts in Iraq; an onshore EPC project for the first phase of the Badra Oilfield Development for Gazpromneft, and an offshore operations contract for the Iraq Crude Oil Expansion project for the South Oil Company.

In West Africa, we are continuing to build our position in Nigeria through our relationship with Seven Energy. We have also been awarded a number of FEED contracts in the region, including a study for the Gazelle field offshore Cote d’Ivoire. West Africa represents a significant market opportunity for Petrofac and we are continuing to pursue projects for both IES and Engineering, Construction, Operations & Maintenance (ECOM) where we believe we can add value. We are very hopeful we will be announcing some new awards in this area in the near future.

A year ago, we announced the award of two Integrated Service (which we call Production Enhancement) Contracts in Tabasco State, Mexico. In just 12 months and from a standing start, we have built a sizeable operation in Mexico with some 190 staff, 86% of whom are Mexican. We have also secured two further Production Enhancement Contracts, one of which is in partnership with Schlumberger. The rapid growth of the Spanish speaking team is set to continue with a new office planned in Tampico to support the Pánuco and Arenque Production Enhancement Contracts and we see some further potential to add additional fields to our already sizeable portfolio.

Looking forward to 2013, we will continue to consolidate our position in these new markets and place new emphasis on places like Russia, other CIS states and Indonesia where we see significant potential opportunity for our business. For the mid-term we are preparing ourselves for the East African market which we believe will evolve into an attractive province for Petrofac.

Geographic Expansion

Our achievements in Mexico are a clear demonstration of our IES strategy in action. Led by Chief Executive Andy Inglis, IES combines our Production Solutions, Developments and Training Services businesses. IES delivers integrated services to resource holders under flexible and often long-term commercial frameworks: Production Enhancement Contracts (PECs), Risk Service Contracts (RSCs) and Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs). PECs and RSCs enable resource holders to contract the capability they need to maximise their developments while retaining control over their reserves.

In Mexico, we secured 25-year PECs for the Santuario and Magallanes fields in August 2011, via a live auction held by Pemex, the National Oil Company. This was the first time operation of production projects had been handed over to private and foreign companies since Mexico’s oil industry was nationalised in 1938. In June this year, we secured our third onshore contract for the Pánuco field in Veracruz State in partnership with Schlumberger. This was quickly followed in August by the award of the Arenque contract area offshore Mexico. Both Pánuco and Arenque were awarded by Pemex and are 30-year production enhancement contracts.

IES now has a portfolio of contracts across the globe. At the end of last year, the division entered an agreement to earn a 20% interest in the Greater Stella Area development in the UK North Sea and completed an agreement which will result in the deployment of the Floating Production Facility, the FPF1 on the development. The division also operates the Ticleni oilfield in Romania under a PEC, and building on relationships and contracts we have held since 2004, continues to work extensively with PETRONAS in Malaysia on a number of projects.

We expect to deliver strong earnings growth from IES this year, and longer-term, these existing projects substantially underpin our growth targets of generating at least US$300 million of net profit from IES projects in 2015.

building our Integrated Energy Services business

We have made significant progress in the last year in building our track record and capability in the offshore EPIC market. This extends across both brownfield and greenfield developments, with projects such as SEPAT and Berantai in Malaysia, and the Greater Stella Area in the UK North Sea.

Expenditure in the offshore service market is expected to grow strongly to 2025 and beyond and, as we aim to increase our market share in this area, we created a new service line called ‘Offshore Capital Projects’ (OCP). Yves Inbona, previously Chief Operating Officer for Saipem joined us in June to take up the new position of Managing Director – OCP, within our ECOM division.

Since his appointment, Yves has been building his teams in Kuala Lumpur and Sharjah to deliver the current portfolio of projects and to position our Woking business for future work. Our OCP business has a strong pipeline of near and medium-term opportunities in the areas such as: platform and pipeline engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning and MOPU and FPSO topsides and conversions, in all of Petrofac’s core geographies.

In addition to focusing on these more immediate opportunities, Yves and his team have also been reviewing the longer-term options for OCP’s strategic development.

building our Offshore EPIC activity

This has been another positive year for Petrofac. we have secured a number of important awards, made significant progress across our operations, while continuing to position the Company for sustainable growth.

In Petrofacts last September, I outlined our growth strategy with its three priorities: 1. geographic expansion, 2. building Integrated Energy Services (IES) and 3. developing an offshore engineering, procurement installation and construction (EPIC) business. At the time of writing this edition, we are in the fourth quarter of the year, which feels like a good time to reflect on our progress.

Our market environment continues to be quite strong. Oil prices have remained around US$100 per barrel and our customers are generating good profits and are seeking to re-invest. We are also seeing growth in E&P spend of between 10 and 15% per annum. Despite this positive macro environment, we are still seeing strong competition in our Onshore Engineering & Construction business and we have also experienced slippage in the timing of certain projects resulting in some engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awards being deferred from 2012 to 2013.

Our growth strategy is designed to deliver a more resilient and sustainable business with a balanced portfolio, ensuring that we meet our financial goal: to more than double our 2010 recurring net earnings by 2015.

FURTHER SUCCESS IN MExICO: FIRST OFFShORE COnTRACT WITh PEMEX

PETROFAC AwARDED US$200 MILLION PROJECT IN KUwAITIn August Petroleós Mexicanos (PEMEx), the Mexican National Oil

Company, declared Petrofac the selected bidder for the integrated production service contract to develop the Arenque area, offshore Mexico. This is the fourth contract between PEMEx and Petrofac and its award comes just two months after Petrofac and our partner Schlumberger won the contract to develop the Pánuco area, located onshore in the Veracruz State.

Arenque is an exciting and challenging prospect for Petrofac. Located offshore Mexico, in 50m water depth, the 40 year-old field is significant, with more than 1.2 billion barrels of oil originally in place and a current recovery factor of 11%. There has been limited capital spent on the field since the 1990s and it therefore represents an opportunity for a major re-development, using a combination of existing and new facilities.

The 30-year Arenque contract highlights Petrofac’s commitment to Mexico and to our customer PEMEX, through building our Mexican operations in a geography that is still relatively new to the Group. As a result of the first Mexican bidding rounds which took place in August 2011, Petrofac was awarded two integrated production service contracts to develop the onshore Magallanes and Santuario blocks in Tabasco State, Southern Mexico. Petrofac’s third contract award was announced in June 2012, when we were declared the selected bidder on the Pánuco Contract Area, together with our partner, Schlumberger.

Andy Inglis, Chief Executive of Petrofac Integrated Energy Services, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Arenque contract, which further strengthens our relationship with PEMEX and the commitment we have to Mexico to assist in the development of its oil & gas reserves. We are also very pleased with the strong start we have made to field operations on Magallanes and Santuario, and the award with Schlumberger of the Pánuco contract.”

Read more about Petrofac’s activities in Mexico on page 7: ‘Petrofac to sponsor talented Mexican postgraduates’.

“We are delighted to have been awarded the Arenque contract, which further strengthens our relationship with PEMEX and the commitment we have to Mexico...”

“This latest award is our eighth EPC project for KOC. It builds on a long history of working together successfully and we look forward to again proving our delivery capability to KOC through this contract.”

Petrofac has been awarded a US$200 million lump-sum engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) for a new power distribution network in North Kuwait. The project was awarded following a competitive tender and will be completed in 24 months.

Under the terms of the contract, we will construct three new substation buildings as well as laying approximately 900 kilometres of buried cable to connect the site’s substations to the distribution network. When complete, the new facilities will provide a more robust power supply to support the development of the onshore oil fields in North Kuwait.

Marwan Chedid, Chief Executive of Petrofac’s Engineering, Construction, Operations & Maintenance division, commented: “Petrofac has a well-established local presence in Kuwait. This latest award is our eighth EPC project for KOC. It builds on a long history of working together successfully and we look forward to again proving our delivery capability to KOC through this contract.”

PETROFAC SAFETy WORKShOPS

For the fourth consecutive year, Petrofac Offshore Projects and Operations has run its successful Safety Leadership programme. Having started in 2009, the workshops are designed to give operational leadership the tools and techniques for tackling behavioural issues associated with safety performance. This year the workshops were attended by employees as well as some of Petrofac’s Employee Safety Representatives (ESRs) and contractors.

This year, the focus was on human factors, behaviours, and improving intervention skills with the use of role play. Attendees were taught how to best approach their staff through a variety of theoretical and practical exercises, all with the aim of improving employee attitudes towards safety within Petrofac.

These workshops were originally initiated to address trends that were identified by Step Change in Safety, the partnership that aims to make the UK the safest oil & gas industry in the world. It was found that when investigating an incident, the causes are often attributed to people’s attitude and behaviours. However, when assigning actions to address these causes the industry, collectively, tends to focus on other areas such as infrastructure and processes. Aspects like attitudes and individuals’ values are perceived as being much harder to tackle and influence.

The workshops continued to expand on the tools and techniques already covered over the past four years, all of which have served our aim of evolving a sustainable culture of continuous improvement in safety.

Steve Bullock, Senior VP, Operations, Offshore Projects and Operations said: “The safety leadership workshops are just one way in which we continue to address safety as our top priority. Behaviours and attitudes towards safe ways of working are crucial and the workshops

are developed from lessons learned across the industry, in particular from those scenarios where interventions from employees were required. These interventions are something we acknowledge as being potentially challenging and therefore we want to ensure that our personnel are fully equipped to deliver above and beyond industry safety standards.”

“The safety leadership workshops are just one way in which we continue to address safety as our top priority.”

History has shown us time and again the catastrophic consequences of unsafe actions. This is why Petrofac strives to ensure that safety is always fully integrated at the initial front end engineering and design stage, and that plant operations are managed with excellence in process safety as a priority.

Of course, there is always room for improvement, and the shortage of professionals qualified in the field of technical process safety is a significant challenge. What’s more, many people tend to confuse ‘occupational safety’ with ‘process safety’ when, in reality, the two are very different – with each demanding its own skills and knowledge.

To address this issue, a senior Petrofac employee has been closely involved in creating a new safety qualification, specifically for the field of process plant. Helen Fennell, Risk Safety Environment Manager, Engineering & Consulting Services, worked with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) to develop and launch the ‘Professional Engineer (PEng) Process Safety’.

Helen told Petrofacts: “This initiative could have a huge impact across the industry. I hope that by achieving this qualification engineers will be able to gain international recognition as competent practitioners in the field of process safety and be able to demonstrate to customers and peers that they are competent safety engineers and committed to high standards of professional conduct.”

With a long established pedigree in operating peer review based qualifications, the IChemE is uniquely positioned to provide the qualification. The institution has a long track record of leading the way in process safety. It also has members all around the world which provides an excellent opportunity to encourage large numbers of process safety professionals, with at least four to six years direct professional experience, to put themselves forward for qualification.

Applications will initially be limited to those already holding professional qualifications recognised by IChemE as equivalent in level to Chartered Chemical Engineer, for example Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and other international reciprocal qualifications. If you’d like to know more, please email: [email protected]

In the world of process plant, one thing matters above all else: safety. This year, a senior Petrofac employee has been helping to raise process safety standards further by launching an important new qualification.

Roger Carter, Petrofac’s Group Head of Environment tells us more: “Achieving a high level of environmental performance is an important priority within Petrofac. This year’s theme ‘Think energy. Increase efficiency’ reflects our belief that using our resources more economically will help us move towards a more sustainable future.

“An important part of our focus, and the reason we first created Environment Month, involves making sure our employees understand the steps we can take as individuals, at home and at work, to reduce energy consumption.

“Throughout the month our employees will run educational lectures and competitions, and develop and share literature which provides hints and tips on how to improve energy usage. In addition, we’re undertaking audits across many of our offices to identify ways to increase efficiency.”

For more information about this year’s Environment Month, Petrofac employees can visit PetroNet.

Petrofac’s fifth annual Environment Month takes place this month. Employees from across the globe will once again be encouraged to adapt their daily habits to reduce the impact they have on the environment – and more specifically, the amount of energy they consume.

Our subsidiary company, TnEI, specialises in industrial energy efficiency and behavioural energy training and our Environment Month audits will be based on its large scale model. This year alone, it has performed energy audits at five Petrofac facilities in the UK, including the laggan Tormore site in Shetland. Overall 1,403,700 kwh of energy savings were identified which is the equivalent energy consumption of 70 UK homes.

Lighting – a bright ideaReplace your light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. Energy-saving halogen light bulbs are about 25% more efficient and can last up to three times longer than traditional bulbs.

Tap into water conservationIt takes a lot of energy to pump, treat and heat water. Saving water saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Turned off?Remember to turn off your PC and monitor every day. A monitor left on overnight wastes enough energy to laser-print 800 pages.

Be tree friendlyUse less paper by printing double sided. The production of paper uses trees, chemicals, energy and water. About one-third of the garbage we throw away is paper.

Not going anywhere? No matter how efficient your car is, unnecessary idling wastes fuel, costs money and pollutes the air. If you’re waiting for more than a couple of minutes, turn off your engine.

Petrofac has become the first North Sea oil & gas service provider to develop and introduce a complete e-learning ‘Control of work’ training programme for offshore workers.

The online training programme aims to improve offshore safety by enhancing understanding of safe working behaviours. The package has been developed in partnership with Mintra Training Portal Limited, a leading provider of learning, training and competency solutions for the oil & gas industry. With safety as our top priority at Petrofac, the training aims to improve understanding of our expectations on work control, enhance our teams’ behaviours and complement our work towards ‘Horizon Zero’; Petrofac’s goal of zero accidents and safety related incidents.

Divided into four units of e-learning, the interactive course uses 3D animations, case studies and offshore videos; all tailored towards individual job roles. It also incorporates lessons learned from past accidents in order to promote awareness of potential risks while working offshore. The results of the training are fully tracked and online mentoring is available to all of our employees and external contractors who take part.

Walter Thain, Vice President – Operations, Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO) said: “Effective and safe Control of Work is crucial to maintaining safe operations. This programme aims to fundamentally change the overall understanding of Control of Work and its impact on operational safety. This new package of e-learning training will undoubtedly support Petrofac in our drive for Horizon Zero.”

In the first instance, the bespoke e-learning programme will be rolled-out to anyone working on Petrofac OPO Duty Holder assets in the UK. There are plans, however, to make the training programme available to all of our operations and maintenance support contracts in the near future.

HSSEIA UPDATE PETROFAC TO ENHANCE COMPETENCE OF yOUNG PROFESSIONALS Petrofac is working alongside its customers to support the development of their graduate trainees.

Competence shortage is one of the key risks facing the oil & gas industry today. So, with the objective of building a capability pool for the future, Petrofac Training Services (PTS) has joined forces with BP Azerbaijan and Pertamina, the Indonesian National Oil Company, to deliver tailored development programmes for their graduate trainees.

The structured and customised training programmes are designed to accelerate professional development in order to better equip attendees for their current and future roles in the industry. Early competence enhancement is also helping to develop a future generation of skilled workers, an important step in addressing the skills shortage in the sector.

25 Pertamina engineering graduates will complete their training programme at Petrofac’s Chemical Process Technology Centre (CPTC) in Singapore. The inauguration ceremony, which took place on 1 October, was attended by Evita Maryanti, Human Resources Director for Pertamina, Salis Aprilion, President Director and CEO for Pertamina, and Petrofac representatives.

In Baku, Azerbaijan, BP officially launched its new petro-technical resource entry programme (PREP). The programme will provide BP’s Azerbaijani graduate trainees with accelerated training to deepen their technical knowledge, business awareness and communications skills. The 11-month course was inaugurated on 4 September at the Caspian Technical Training Centre (CTTC), which is co-managed by Petrofac.

PTS, which provides competence consultancy, training and assurance services to the oil & gas industry, operates or co-manages 14 training facilities around the world and trains more than 55,000 individuals annually.

The petro-technical resource entry programme (PREP) is designed as a tool to train young Azerbaijani graduates for a career within bP.

In the first year of the programme, 55 graduates will undergo training at the Caspian Technical Training Centre (CTTC) in Baku, operated by TTE-Petrofac on behalf of BP and its partners. The Centre delivers a wide range of internationally accredited courses and is equipped with a variety of training aids, including a drilling simulator. Training will be delivered by the UK’s Heriot-Watt University and TTE-Petrofac, a joint venture between Petrofac Training Services and TTE International, a UK-based provider of technical apprentices to the oil & gas industry.

The TTE-Petrofac team has a long standing relationship with BP in the country. In 2011, the contract to operate the Caspian Technical Training Centre was renewed for further five years.

KARAN PROJECT COMPLETION IN SAUDI ARAbIA

commerciaL fLeXiBiLitYThe Karan project was awarded in the midst of a major global economic downturn, with very unpredictable market conditions for commodities. As a result, within the context of a lump-sum EPC environment, we maintained focus on being highly responsive and nimble in our strategy and execution. The credit for our success goes to the Petrofac team who supported our efforts.

Finally, in the spirit of continuous improvement, our Saudi operations team is taking advantage of valuable lessons learned from this project as we move forward in the execution of two new In-Kingdom EPC projects.

In early 2009 Petrofac was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Saudi Aramco’s Karan utilities and cogeneration package. The Karan site is located 150 kilometres northwest of Khobar, where Petrofac’s Saudi operations are located in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom.

Guided BY our VaLuesThe Petrofac Group values are the basis for all our behaviours and they have certainly been the guiding principles throughout the execution of this project. For example our commitment to being ‘safe’ has been illustrated by some memorable highlights such as completing more than 11 million man-hours without a lost time injury (LTI). Also, early in the project, we received an ‘excellent’ rating from Saudi Aramco for our remote area urgent care medical facility during their audit of our camp.

We teamed up with our customer on more than one occasion in order to deliver some initiatives such as safe and defensive driving, environmental clean-up days, and Petrofac’s Code of Business Conduct presentations at local workshops.

During this challenging project, with a new customer, we set ourselves the challenge of continuous improvement, day after day. We have strived to demonstrate our commitment to safety, quality, corporate social responsibility, training, environmental awareness and ethical business behaviour, all of which supported our EPC operations.

LocaL deLiVerY aNdLocaL success storiesAppointing local contractors to support us in the delivery of our projects is an important consideration for Petrofac, wherever we work in the world. Karan was no exception.

There is one initiative which we are all very proud of. We involved the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry in our localisation plan. Its training division collaborated with us to deliver targeted work skills training to young Saudi women and men. A total of 311 students were sponsored by Petrofac, all successfully completing the courses on their way to employment with local companies. Petrofac also recruited some of the graduating students to join our Khobar operations office.

Our organisational development team focused on the continuous development of our Saudi engineers and new graduate engineers. Both on site and within our offices and through discipline-specific and cross-training courses that were delivered by Petrofac subject matter experts and professors from local universities. We also have a dynamic mentoring programme in place offering technical management skills training inspired by the global model for all of Petrofac’s fresh graduate engineers.

One outstanding success story is our IT Admnistrator, Abdulqader Al-Shehri, who completed the highly-respected UK-based Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) ‘train-the-trainer’ course, and is now set to become internationally certified to deliver training in his field.

The project is an integral part of the Karan gas development programme to expand the Khursaniyah gas plant to accommodate around 1.8 billion standard cubic feet per day of high pressure sour gas from the offshore Karan field. In addition to building the utilities and cogeneration package, we also upgraded the plant’s process controls, electrical systems and support facilities.

Petrofacts caught up with Imad Shanan, Petrofac Senior Vice President and General Manager of Saudi operations, to give us some insights into his experience over the last three years at Karan.

ESTAbLISHING COLLAbORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS

TOP MARKS IN INDUSTRy AUDIT

At the end of 2011 we announced a work management systems development and implementation contract with the queensland Gas Company (qGC) a subsidiary of bG Group. From its brisbane office, Petrofac’s Plant Asset Management alongside partner, Sharp business Solutions, is playing an integral role in qGC’s queensland Curtis Liquefied Natural Gas Project (qCLNG).

Petrofac Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO) in the North Sea has recently received its highest scores yet in a major, industry-wide supply-chain audit. The results of the independent, bi-annual First Point Assessment Ltd (FPAL) Verify audit showed an increase in our scores in all three of the audited categories – Health & Safety, Environment and Competence and Training.

As we move towards the end of 2012, our relationship with Sharp Business Solutions (SBS) has expanded further through entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the delivery of enterprise asset management (EAM) solutions to the global oil & gas market.

Establishing Plant Asset Management’s (PAM) credentials ever more deeply as a global provider of EAM solutions in the international market place, we now offer a fully integrated service for our customers. This starts with maintenance strategy development, maintenance system build, through to a complete work/maintenance management system and follow up training and support package.

Geoff Baker, Executive Director, PAM commented: “Establishing collaborative relationships that assist us in improving the services we can offer to our customers is very much at the front of our strategic thinking. Our MoU with SBS is a perfect illustration of this. In Australia we are supporting QGC and the country’s flourishing LNG industry both in Brisbane and Perth. We are also looking to build on relationships established with other global players such as Chevron who have significant project interests in the region. Internally, we are also offering this capability to Petrofac projects. This is particularly beneficial in engineering, procurement and construction projects, where there is frequently a requirement to provide operational support systems as part of the deliverables, or where there is a responsibility to provide ongoing operations and maintenance support.”

“Establishing collaborative relationships that assist us in improving the services we can offer to our customers is very much at the front of our strategic thinking.”

The results mean that we now have assessed scores of more than nine out of ten in all three areas. The scores rank among the highest within the geographical scope of the audit; the UK, Dutch and Irish oil & gas industry.

Our results will be available, along with those of our peers, to view online on the FPAL website enabling our customers to view an objective assessment of our supply-chain capability and performance. The overall aim of the Verify audit is to enable potential customers who participate in the scheme to make a fair comparison of selected suppliers without the need to undertake their own, specific audit of each vendor.

Commenting on the results of the audit, Gordon Smith, Vice President – Commercial, told Petrofacts: “We are very pleased with our latest results from the FPAL Verify audit. The high scores demonstrate our commitment to our customers as well as to constant improvement across all aspects of our operations.”

DEVELOPING TALENT FOR THE FUTURE

As part of the Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO) talent management programme, employees have been asked if they think they have got what it takes to be our Offshore Installation Managers (OIMs) of the future.

OIM assessment centres have been developed to identify employees with the potential to become the future of Petrofac’s offshore leadership. Petrofac employees within OPO can either put themselves forward or be nominated to the organisational development team by their management.

The dedicated assessment centres assess whether these employees are ready to become an OIM now or after some development. The aim is always to give objective feedback as to their readiness for an OIM role and to provide a personalised development plan to put them on the right path to achieving their goal. Their follow up development focuses on identifying both technical and managerial training requirements. For some, it also includes spending time in a position different to their own, for example moving from a maintenance contract to duty holder contract, and the allocation of a mentor who can give help and guidance based on their own experiences.

Three OIM assessment centres have been held so far with a mixture of offshore as well as onshore candidates taking part. The scheme is now a fully recognised succession planning and talent management tool within OPO, ensuring that employees can expand on their existing knowledge and experience.

Walter Thain, Vice President – Operations, OPO, said of the scheme: “Although still in its early stages, the scheme supports the longer-term growth aspirations of OPO and Petrofac as a whole by nurturing talented employees as they come through the business. It bodes well for our future and that of our customers.”

As the pressure to harness energy from renewable sources intensifies, the offshore wind sector has seen rapid growth. In the UK and Germany alone, the respective governments have ambitious 2020 targets for offshore wind generated power. Petrofac is perfectly placed to service this sector.

As offshore wind projects have become larger, more complex and have moved further offshore, it has become increasingly necessary for skilled workers to be able to move between projects in different geographies. As such, the industry recognises the need to ensure the safety and competency of all personnel on all projects.

That’s why, in 2011, Petrofac was approached by the renewable energy sector to develop high quality and consistent safety training and competency standards across the UK and German sectors.

The Company worked closely with the German training provider Deutsche WindGuard to deliver a bespoke range of training courses for the renewable industry. Petrofac was able to draw on more than 30-years’ experience in developing and delivering training and competency for the oil & gas industry, while Deutsche WindGuard has renewable industry experience and a world-class training facility.

Together, they combined their expertise to address the different challenges and hazards specific to the offshore wind industry. This unique approach has meant project developers that share teams across borders can get the quality assurance needed to build a consistently competent workforce.

Since 2011 and following on from our involvement with the BorWin Alpha, the world’s first offshore HVDC converter station, Petrofac has worked with the operator TenneT on the DolWin1 HVDC (high voltage direct current) station in the German sector of the North Sea. When the contract was awarded, it was the largest HVDC station of its kind. It weighs close to 12,000 tonnes and will be a hub for the Borkum West II offshore wind farm development situated off the coast of Northern Germany.

The Company’s involvement in the project was two-fold. Firstly, we provided engineering support, design validation against the contract, applicable design codes and industry practice. Secondly, we offered construction supervision at the topside and foundation fabricators’ yards.

The project was managed at the Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO) office in Aberdeen, with integrated personnel in both the customer’s project office and the fabrication yards. This enabled Petrofac to offer hands-on, day-to-day input into areas such as build sequence, compliance and HSE.

Drew Russell, VP – Offshore Projects, OPO said: “In assisting TenneT with the offshore engineering, construction, installation, hook-up and commissioning of DolWin 1, we have been able to bring our traditional oilfield experience and translate this into the emerging offshore wind industry.

This is an exciting project and one that gives us more demonstrable experience in the offshore wind arena. It is already affording us further opportunities with TenneT and other power transmission companies, both in the UK and internationally.”

“As the offshore wind industry continues to develop at pace, it is clear that our oil & gas experience will significantly serve operators in this sector – on a number of levels.”

How do we offer specialist project support and development? As we find more ways to use our skills in the offshore sector, we are also increasing our numbers of dedicated specialists with industry experience.

Although this team is distributed across our business units, they work together to provide an integrated set of services. Their focus is to identify and deliver offshore wind projects, drawing on their project management, engineering, operations and training expertise.

Within the Group, there are specialist areas that enable us to offer operators a more focused service. For example, TNEI specialises in energy consultancy. Its power systems and technology team is currently working alongside our Engineering & Consulting Services business to deliver concept engineering related to work packages for two offshore wind farms in Scottish waters – Moray Firth and Inch Cape. These packages are the ‘within wind farm’ and ‘wind farm to onshore grid’ electrical systems.

Overall our approach is to bring together the right skills from wherever they sit within our organisation to meet the needs of our customer.

How will Petrofac work with the offshore wind sector in the future? As the offshore wind industry continues to develop at pace, it is clear that our oil & gas experience will significantly serve operators in this sector – on a number of levels. Already this year we have been able to prequalify and tender for engineering, procurement, & construction (EPC) and engineering, procurement, installation & commissioning (EPIC) scopes connected with constructing elements of offshore wind farm grid connections. Hopefully we will be able to bring you news of our success in the future.

There are clear synergies between our existing service competencies and the offshore wind sector and that is why it provides another opportunity to support Petrofac’s continued growth – one of the key reasons why our involvement in wind power has been steadily increasing over the last few years.

We’ve worked in some of the world’s harshest environments and have gained a vast amount of experience supporting the international oil & gas community. Not only can we draw on this knowledge and track record to meet the demands of offshore wind operators, we have already had a great deal of success in the offshore wind sector in the areas of engineering, consultancy services, project delivery, operations and maintenance, and training.

We have achieved this by aligning our services with the life cycle of the offshore wind energy assets on either a stand-alone or integrated basis, and under flexible commercial models. As such, we have helped customers in the UK and Germany to bring their projects through development, construction and operations phases.

SCOTVALVES’ NEw FLAGSHIP FACILITy

Scotvalve Services Limited (Scotvalves), part of Petrofac Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO), has unveiled its plans for a new flagship workshop facility in Aberdeenshire, UK. The 4.4 acre site will be almost four times the size of the company’s current facility and will bring unique repair and testing capability to the area.

The new facility comes as Scotvalves responds to heightened demand on its services from customers including original equipment manufacturers, service companies and drilling contractors. With an increasing focus on the verification of the safety and integrity of equipment, the oil & gas industry has been readily adopting best practice in the fields of inspection, repair and maintenance. This means full certification and service of critical items such as well control and process equipment has become a pre-requisite. The Aberdeen area currently has limitations in its capacity to cater for larger equipment so, very often, items need to be sent out with the area for maintenance and repair. The new facility will therefore save our customers time and money.

The facility is expected to be completed and operational by mid-2013. It will have the capability to repair and test subsea and drilling/pressure control equipment of up to 21 ¼ inches. Its new test pit will be seven metres long, six metres wide and six metres deep with the latest high-tech specification and pressure test capability for 30,000 psi. The design is unique; it will be fully contained with a lid and sliding pressure test door for pressure containment. There are currently no similar pits in the region that are specific to drilling product testing. Around 15 new long-term jobs will also be created to add to the 55-strong team currently at Scotvalves.

The facility will also be as environmentally and energy efficient as possible following recommendations made by energy consultants TNEI, another subsidiary of Petrofac, and the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Services. Around 240,000 litres of water will be needed to fill the test pit and this will come from an innovative bespoke rain water harvesting system built into the roof.

Roy Burnett, Director, Oilfield Services for Scotvalves said: “We’re delighted to announce the plans for our new facility; it’s very exciting for both Scotvalves and Petrofac and it reflects the growth we’ve been experiencing over the last few years. As always our focus remains on working to the highest standard, ensuring safety and integrity of equipment and maximising operational uptime for our customers.”

Bill Dunnett, Managing Director, OPO, commented: “This development further demonstrates our continued commitment to the area, where we recognise the skills, experience and infrastructure we need to maintain growth and continually develop our business. We value these attributes highly and constantly strive to recruit and invest locally. This is another example of our commitment to local delivery within our key communities and I look forward to seeing the facility up and running next year.”

“We’re delighted to announce plans for our new facility... as always our focus remains on working to the highest standard, ensuring safety and integrity of equipment and maximising operational uptime for our customers”

wHAT IS THE CODE OF CONDUCT?With 17,200 people working for Petrofac today, it is essential that we have a common set of principles and standards of behaviour. Which is why, as we started to grow rapidly in 2006, we launched the first Code of Conduct, to set out expectations of everyone who works for, and with us, from employees to suppliers, contractors, agents and partners.

As our business continues to evolve, the Code of Conduct needs to keep pace and thus it is currently being updated to reflect internal changes as well as changes to our regulatory environment. The updated Code, which is scheduled to be distributed to all staff and contractors at the beginning of the new year, includes practical, up-to-date information about upholding our standards and the law and regulations, advice on dealing with others, plus new guidance on difficult decisions and situations. Available in several languages, we have designed it so that it’s easy to follow and understand.

we know that in addition to technical expertise and top class service capability, long-term business success relies on strong ethical values and a good reputation.

Ethical behaviour and practice is at the very top of our board’s priority list. Our vision is to be ‘the world’s most admired oilfield service company’, and this is underpinned by a series of values. These values also form the foundation of our Code of Conduct.

OUR VALUESARE yOUR VALUES It is the responsibility of everyone who works for and with Petrofac, to follow our Code of Conduct and report actual, or suspected, breaches. It is the right thing to do – and the safe thing to do. We have a system in place so that our employees and third parties can report breaches anonymously, and in confidence. It’s called Speak Up and it is run and managed by an external party called ExpoLink.

Speak Up offers a choice of three reporting channels: • call a free and confidential helpline to

speak to an operator trained to respond to concerns about ethics and compliance (see table)

• send an email to [email protected]

• report online on the website www.expolink.co.uk, using the password ‘petrofac’ The service operates 24 hours a day, seven

days a week and is available to all Petrofac employees as well as third parties. Breaches can be reported in any language.

If we all strictly adhere to the Code of Conduct, accidents can be prevented, losses can be minimised and reputations defended.

PETROFAC TEAM RECOGNISED FOR TECHNICAL ExPERTISE

The three-man team produced two research papers which were accepted by the technical committee of the 15th World Conference in Earthquake Engineering on the basis of their originality and innovative technological development. One of the papers, titled ‘Dynamic response of well foundation under seismic force with coupled soil structure interaction’, was so highly considered that the team was invited to present their paper in person in front of the audience of leading industry experts. This is a remarkable achievement as the honour is only granted to a select few by the global scientific committee.

Commenting on this accomplishment, Indrajit told Petrofacts: “I am extremely proud of the team’s achievement. Having two papers accepted for their original technological development in a world forum by one organisation is an amazing result. I hope this sends a positive message to all our young graduates and engineers beginning their career with us. If you have real passion for your discipline, get chartered, read round the subject and develop your subject matter expertise. It is so very rewarding as your career develops.”

This certification comes after a multi-staged review process during which Vivek had to submit detailed technical reports, published papers and commitment and competence reports and attend interviews with the IChemE panel. The panel reviewed one of his articles published in Hydrocarbon Processing titled ‘Improve Natural Gas Liquids Recovery’, and also found his several revamp studies as Onsite Refinery Consultant for the PETRONAS Refinery particularly impressive. Subsequent reviews by the Registrar Team followed by the Professional Formation Forum culminated in Vivek receiving simultaneous awards of both Chartered and Fellow status. The application process also required experience certifications by past employers and references by existing IChemE members.

Recognised as a Fellow, Vivek is considered to be an engineering professional of distinction who has made a significant contribution to his profession while demonstrating technical excellence and strong leadership qualities.

Vivek spoke to Petrofacts about his achievement: “I am delighted and thankful for this great honour. These awards are recognised benchmarks that allow both myself and Petrofac to benefit further from the IChemE’s resources. I hope that my experience will benefit applicants of the future.”
