A very warm welcome to you all to Memorial Park and Petone Football Club.

Grant Plumbing Petone hope to keep their recent run of good results flowing when they take on Tawa and look to defend the O’Brien Shield again. We had a good victory over them in the first game of the season but I’m sure the lads won’t be taking anything for granted today.

It was great to do the double over neighbours Lower Hutt last week. They have had the wood on us in recent matches, so to do the league and cup double over them was very pleasing. Defensively we have been sound with 3 clean sheets in a row. If we can keep it tight at the back and take our chances up front then hopefully more wins will come our way. Our Reserves will face a tough battle against Olympic today in the curtain-raiser. Scott and the lads had a strong victory last week against Victoria University so will go into the game feeling positive.

I’d like to take the chance to wish Michael Pickering a big farewell and all the best for his OE. Pickers is heading over to the UK on Monday as he ventures out into the big world to taste what it has to give. Michael, of course, has blue blood in his veins and I know he will always be checking Petone results any chance he can. Hopefully we will see him back soon and, if those knees finally decide to behave, back on the Turf for the top side.

Don’t forget tomorrow at the Cake-tin there is a FIFA U20 World Cup quarter final. This will be Wellington’s last chance to see the future superstars in action so grab some tickets and get along.

All the best to all of you in action today, see you up in the clubrooms later for the after-match. Remember “play hard but play fair”..

From The Balcony...

Sam Boyd

I think I have a strained hamstring from bracing from the cold in bed. You know when you first jump into bed and the sheets are a bit chilly and it takes a bit to warm up? Yeah I think I have jumped in, held myself in an abnormal position for a sustained period and ooosssh there goes the left hammy.Talking of clean sheets, Petone have now had three on the trot. I have mentioned it before but by jingo’s Reed Collingwood is in some real good form at the minute. His barking/shouting always grabs my attention. If he was to go to the local movie theatre and quietly sneak in, then all of a sudden yell “everybody out!”, I reckon that could lead One Network News or make the “Odd” section of Stuff. We are definitely going to miss Van Elia today after he picked up a second yellow against Lower Hutt. Could there be a call-up for Petone Power Ranger Kristy Whalen. Whalen, returning after a couple of years out, has been banging them in for the Power Rangers. She has already scored 6 for the season and is in a head to head battle with BJ Crook from the Stonecutters for most goals scored this year. I think the loser has to put a grand on the bar during prize-giving or something silly like that. Wonderful stuff! The annual PFC Quiz is creeping up, July 28th to be precise. Myself, Rich and Benn are having regular meetings to come up with questions and conundrums that will make the brain twinge. There will be the return of the famous “Activity Round” which last year saw the clubrooms turn into an arts and crafts society for the drunk. Will you have to eat a raw egg as part of the round? Let’s see come the 28th!Alright let the football begin! Here’s hoping our lads can continue on this lovely little run they are on and continue their positive incline up the Central League table. Keep warm and let’s hope no seagulls go careering into power poles and deny power to the clubrooms!

COYB’s!

Position at Club and how long have you been in this role?Bit of a mix at present. Currently a member of the management committee, I organise events, whip out some enormous pasta bakes, partake in the occasional social media update or two, act as deputy chief proof-reader, keep the red wine sales up, pour pints... And loiter around various sidelines, pretending to be a sports photographer. Oh, and I kick a ball and run around a bit.

Previous involvement at the club?Started playing junior football as a 6 year old, and began women’s football at 15. Was recruited to the supporters’ committee in an astonishingly short amount of time, and was serving behind the bar not long after that. Started on the management committee at 19 (let’s not count back!), and have had a crack at a few jobs since: Club Captain, Senior Football Committee, Women’s Committee, events, Bar Manager (off and on over many years). I produced the match programmes for five years and project managed the redesign of our Club logo. I’ve managed women’s teams, our Men’s reserve team, played masseuse, and religiously supported our Petone teams – including following our men’s 1st team all over the country.

Best thing that has happened at the club since your time?Kelvin taking over as Chief Wine Buyer? (That is semi-serious BTW…) Getting back into Central League. The creation of our new logo. The unveiling of our Honours Board. The fantastic plastic grass out the front. Our U19’s winning the Napier youth tourney (the one year in the past 20 that I wasn’t there!). And most importantly, all the extraordinary people that have chosen to be part of Petone FC… (Oh, plus any game we’ve beaten LHC! Tee hee.)

Where do you see the club in the next 5 years?Widely regarded as the best club in the Hutt Valley, and one of the best in Wellington. Financially sound, and well administrated, with an ever growing group of hard working volunteers. Recent winners of the Central League (both Men’s and Women’s), and/or the ASB Chatham/Women’s Knockout Cups. Continuing to produce excellent junior players, and retaining our existing players at the other end of their playing careers! Always offering a warm, friendly club atmosphere, and a place people love to hang out.

Oh. And some new carpet in the clubrooms.

Who is your second favourite club?Wellington Phoenix FC. Though I often argue they’re my favourite club, because Petone FC isn’t just a club, it’s my home. (Cue eye-rolling?)

Former Petone player, Maureen Jacobson, was inducted into the Sports Legends of Wellington at last week’s Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards Dinner.

Maureen played several years for Petone after returning from a professional career overseas.

During her time at the club, Petone won six consecutive Central league Championships (1994-99) and appeared in four SWANZ Cup Finals (Women’s Chatham Cup equivalent).

The article below, published in the evening’s programme covers Maureen’s illustrious career. She still keeps an interest in the club’s successes..

Midfielder Maureen Jacobson played for North Wellington, Miramar Rangers and Petone, and represented Wellington from 1976 until 1996. She is New

Zealand’s second most capped international women’s player, appearing for her country 60 times. She was the first women’s soccer player to make 50

appearances for New Zealand. Her 20 goals made her the country’s second-highest goal scorer. Jacobson appeared at the 1991 Women’s World Cup in

China, playing in all three group games. Maureen also played in Europe, and was one of New Zealand’s first professional female players. In 1988, she won the Finnish National club championship with the HJK Helsinki team. During

the 1989-90 season, Jacobson scored 67 goals for the Millwall Lionesses. During the next season, she overcame injury to help Millwall win the 1991 FA Women’s Cup final. In 2012, Maureen was inducted into the Wellington

Football Hall of Fame, the first woman player to be recognised.

And following on from John Bradbury’s recognition last year for a lifetime contribution to sport, this year the award went to another Petone favourite, Andy Leslie.

As well as playing for the All Blacks, Andy was selected to represent New Zealand at Softball, Basketball (cancelled tour to China) and in a NZ Colts Water Polo Team.

The club’s congratulations go out to both Maureen and Andy.

Girls’ football at Petone FC continues its strong growth with the club consistently fielding four girls only teams over the past 2-3 winter seasons. This is supported with some teams returning for the summer league in the junior grades, as well as the recent introduction of an U17 team, providing a clear pathway to senior football.

Following the launch of the Women’s Development Strategy last year, Petone has been working to establish a clearer development pathway for all girls, whether in mixed teams or girls only, and help to develop new skills to improve players’ overall game.

This includes the introduction of a girls’ advanced training session (ATS) that was established for players aged 9 years and older, and is run on Tuesday evenings by Tom Randles, Nadine Bowen and other senior female players. ‘This is a great way to establish links between juniors and seniors says Nadine, who is keen to ensure the girls see the opportunities they have with Petone as they progress to senior football.

“With so many options available for girls to play in mixed and girls’ only leagues, winter and summer, we need to help them to enhance their skills and support them so they can become strong and confident players of the future” says Nadine.
