Changes to IRB Training & Expiration DatesThe NIH IRB online training, which was formerly used by UWL to fulfill IRB trainingrequirements, has been removed by the agency. UWL has replaced it with new IRB onlinetraining modules in CITI (the same online system used for most other research compliancetraining). See this site for information on registering for CITI and accessing the new trainingmodules.

Page 11: Grant News, October 2018...Applied Research Grant Workshop at UWL, Oct. 25, 2-4 pm Changes to IRB Training & Expiration Dates WiSys Quick Pitch for UWL Undergrads & Grads NSF Major

In addition to the change in the IRB training system, IRB training will now expire after a 5-year period. For those completing IRB training for the first time in CITI, the required trainingcertification will expire 5 years following an individual’s completion date. For individuals whocompleted the old NIH IRB training, certifications will expire December 31, 2023 (in 5 years). At that time, individuals should complete the CITI IRB training modules and provide a newcompletion certification with their next IRB protocol.

Questions about the new training modules or training expiration can be directed to the IRBProgram Assistant, Katie TerBeest ([email protected], 608-785-8044).

NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program: UWLNotices of Interest Due Nov. 7The NSF MRI program serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineeringinstruments for research and research training in higher education, not-for-profit museums, science centers, and scientific/engineering research organizations. It supports acquisition ofinstrumentation that aids research and research training goals and that may be used byother researchers regionally or nationally. Each MRI proposal may request support for theacquisition (Track 1) or development (Track 2) of a single research instrument for sharedinter- and/or intra-organizational use.

NSF limits the number of MRI applications each institution may submit; thus, interestedUWL faculty/staff should submit a brief (i.e., up to one-page) notice of interest (NOI)via email to [email protected] by November 7. NOIs should include the followinginformation:

1. Indication of whether MRI application would be Track 1 (acquisition) or Track 2(development)

2. Summary of the need for the equipment that would be acquired or developed3. List of the internal and/or external collaborators that would be involved in the

application and their respective roles (e.g., responsibilities for equipment trainingand/or maintenance, how equipment would be used by respective collaborators)

Submit NOIs to [email protected]; include your department chair and college dean in theCC line. The UWL Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP) will facilitate review ofNOIs and will notify faculty/staff invited to submit full applications shortly thereafter. Pleasecontact ORSP ([email protected]) with questions.

Deadlines:

Required UWL notices of intent (NOIs) are due to [email protected] by November 7,2018.Full applications are due to NSF during the submission window: January 1-22, 2019.
