GRANTS FOR ACADEMIC PROJECTS

This annual report prepared by the Office for the Advancement of Scholarship andTeaching(OAST)attemptsto summarizeMiamiUniversity'soveralleffortsandsuccessinobtaininggrants andcontractsin supportof academicprojectsduring the 1992-93year.While OAST and other University offices assist faculty in their efforts to acquire funding, credit for the successes described in this report should go to the faculty who envisionedthese projects and who pursued funding in support of their ideas.

EXTERNAL GRANTS

In 1992-93 Miami University received 291 awards totaling $10,024,505 from externalsources in support of academic projects initiated by University personnel. This is a recordlevel of external grant support, and represents an increase of 11% over funding received in1991-92. This increase is part of a sustained growth in grant funding at Miami Universityover the past decade, as shown in the Table below.

-1- Grants for Academic Projects

A variety of sources provided external funding to Miami for academic projects in 1992-93.Grants from federal agencies exceeded $5.7 million dollars and comprised the majority(57%) of support, as shown in the chart which follows. State agencies, privatefoundations, corporations, and other organizations also contributed sizable portions to theoverall support.

The list of projects funded by grants during the past year is impressive. Included are 23awards totaling $2,522,637 from the National Science Foundation (NSF). A major NSFgrant of $945,017 was awarded for the second year of Miami's lead role in ProjectDiscovery, the Ohio statewide effort to improve precollege science and mathematicseducation. Other significant NSF grants were obtained by faculty for basic researchprojects, for equipment acquisition for teaching and research laboratories, and forprecollege teacher enhancement projects. In addition to support received through NSF,Miami faculty have continued to provide state and national leadership through scieRceandmathematics education programs funded within the Dwight D. Eisenhower Science andMathematics Education Program coordinated by the Ohio Board of Regents. Eightprojects were funded by this program during the 1992-93 year, l]ringing to 39 the numberof Miami awards through this program since its inception in 1986. Another significantaccomplishment in 1992-93 was the receipt of seven grants totaling $1,018,747 by MiamiUniversity's Middletown campus (MUM) in support of teaching and research projects. These projects are of great significanceto the community.

Several additional grants during 1992-93 illustrate the breadth of sponsored projects atMiami University. A grant for $265,332 was received from The Cleveland Foundation for"Moving Environmental Technology into Business and Management Education in Ohio".Faculty involved with this project are from a wide variety of disciplines, includingeconomics, zoology, marketing, and geography. A grant of $103,497 from the UnitedParcel Foundation continued support for the Minority Professional Leadership Program inthe Schools of Applied Science and Business Administration. A $100,000 grant from the

National Endowment for the Humanities continued support of a Distinguished TeachingProfessorship in the Humanities.

During the 1992-93 year, 202 individuals submitted proposals for external funding. Wecongratulate these individuals and wish them continued success in their efforts to obtainsupport for scholarly work.

INTERNAL GRANTS

Committees such as the Committee on Faculty Research (CFR), the Committee for theImprovement of Instruction (CI!), and the Miami University Research Advisory Council(MURAC) assisted Miami faculty with startup funds during the year. In addition toconsideration of policy issues affecting scholarship and teaching at Miami, each of thesecommittees provided recommendations for internal funding supportive of faculty projects.Awards to faculty through programs of these three committees in 1992-93are summarizedin the Table below.
