Welcome!
elcome to Sacramento! This year’s GRC’s 40th Annual Meeting and GEA GeoExpo+ brings our industry together once again in this year of possibilities. The annual event is an excellent opportunity to collaborate. On the commercial front, the Expo+ showcases the best in the business and the GRC workshops, fieldtrips and technical sessions are educational and engaging for geothermal professionals and students alike. Hosting an annual geothermal conference is what the GRC does well. There are a few notable changes this year – the new App, going more digital with a flash drive to reduce printing and save costs/resources, transitioning to a Monday night mixer instead of a banquet to better facilitate networking opportunities, and bringing uniformity to the poster session presentations. These incremental changes were tough to implement, but needed to continue to keep our meeting in pace with the business world.
Our venue, the Sacramento Convention Center, is at the heart of downtown Sacramento, an area that has grown and changed remarkably in recent years. It offers more than 150 restaurants, bars and lounges, unique shopping, hotels, entertainment, events, cultural festivities and the historic district of Old Sacramento along the river. Close to the nearby California State Capitol, our Annual Meeting will take place at the epicenter for attracting the attention of key legislative and governmental staff. The office of the Governor, the legislature, California Energy Commission, Environmental Protection Agency and Air Resource Board each have main offices in this downtown area.
In a time when renewable energy is thriving, the question of what role geothermal plays in our energy future is on everyone’s mind. Peripheral discussions of the best approach to advancing geothermal, unify messaging in political arenas and working to raise the profile of geothermal in the public sector are underway. These conversations are gaining momentum. President Obama’s recent announcement to support development of the Salton Sea resource and California Governor Brown signing the 50% renewable portfolio standard into law are positive steps, hopefully, in boosting geothermal development in California.
But waiting for things to happen is not enough. The Annual Meeting brings together the technical professionals, working constantly on cost and operational efficiencies to modernize geothermal, with the business side of the industry. Together, we must actively launch and engage in a successful campaign for today. We have a great story but need to dust off the approach. Geothermal has been around commercially in California since 1960 – a lot has changed since then and while we continue to advocate for our industry, we need to ask ourselves what is working and is the status quo approach effective.
It is a challenging period in geothermal’s long history and we know that innovation and ingenuity has kept existing geothermal powering away. Clearly, we do a lot of things right. But there are fresh ideas, new techniques and approaches, both on the operations side as well as the promotional and marketing fronts. Now is the time for the geothermal industry to streamline efforts, develop a solid strategy to unite to better utilize resources, efficiently use new tools to spread our message, attract support and pave a successful path forward, together.
It has been a privilege to serve as this year’s Annual Meeting chair and I sincerely thank the GRC team and the amazing team of professionals who so generously volunteered their time to serve on this year’s Committee. With the subtle changes gained (even with the learning curve) this year’s Annual Meeting Planning Committee hopes that this meeting will rank well with GRC’s established track record for hosting memorable industry events while contributing to the effort of forging ahead, mindful of new technologies, approaches and ideas. A quote attributed to Charles Darwin comes to mind: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” With the gradual changes implemented this year in place, I very much look forward to next year’s event with the hope that the GRC continues to be inspired to move forward with impact.
