THe FUTUre IS Here
Our varieties are bred in partnership with AFBI.
The performance of our varieties is the result of over 100 years of focus and expertise in grass breeding combined with trials and testing.
Our trials are carried out by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute at Loughgall, Co Armagh, further trials at Aberdeen which are maintained by Scottish Agricultural Colleges and our own Barenbrug trial site at Cropvale, Evesham.
For over 60 years, the AFBI Loughgall programme has been carrying out all stages of grass breeding from crossing through several stages of selection and testing, finally releasing improved varieties for use on local farms. Since 1991, Barenbrug has been working
with AFBI under an exclusive commercial agreement agreed with DARD.
Your local trial site at Loughgall has a very long growing season and with minimal stress brought on by drought or disease, grasses can grow to their full yield potential.
All the Barenbrug trials compare the potential new varieties against a basket of the best available current varieties, to ensure continuous improvement. The aim of all the testing is to develop new varieties and mixtures that bring increased yields, better characteristics and improved nutrition that will increase animal performance.

Sowing a new grass ley is an expensive exercise, so it is essential you get the maximum value out of the new ley.
To ensure this, besides all the varieties used in Barforage being subjected to official testing for recommended lists, they are also sown as pure swards on commercial farms to ensure they are both palatable and persistent.
DeVeLoPeD BY USPersistent and Palatable
PalatabilityPalatability is a difficult concept to measure, but like persistency, you know when you have a palatable sward. So our breeders address palatability in different ways:
1Produce varieties with the best disease resistance. Diseases like crown rust
and drechslera leaf spot will reduce the area of green leaf in the sward leading to rejection by the grazing animal.
2Select varieties with a very low amount of re-heading. Trials at
Moorepark (Eire) showed that varieties with a higher proportion of stem in the sward, like AberMagic reduced milk production by 6%.
3All new Barenbrug varieties are sown out on commercial farms two
years before they are used in BarForage mixtures and they are farmed as any other sward. They will be exposed to the normal extremes of farm management, like tramping, poaching, slurry application and mowing too low.
They are also monitored for any rejection by the grazing animals and as they are sown in acre plots in larger fields, the grazing animal will have a free choice of what it eats, so any palatability problem is easily identified.
Only if they perform under this treatment will they then be included in BarForage mixtures as both Palatable and Persistent.
Over 200 dairy cattle on grazing trials in Brampton, Cumbria
PersistencyPersistency in a long term sward is a concept that is very difficult to quantify, but you know when you have a persistent sward. It will continue producing for many years, not decline rapidly and need replacing by year 4 or 5.
Our breeders select potential varieties, from a wide genetic base, with the best disease resistance and physical characteristics and then test them exhaustively in as wide a range of conditions as possible.

Soil compaction problemsThe effects of recent high rainfall and wet weather patterns have been plain to see in a lot of grassland.
The high rainfall, waterlogged soils and the problems of harvesting or grazing grass fields has led to severe soil compaction problems.
This is demonstrated with severe invasions of buttercups and annual meadow grass, and tracks left by the previous year’s foraging, where the grass is not producing.
Buttercup and annual meadow grass are shallow rooted species, and will spread across compacted soils. Neither are productive and buttercup is also poisonous to the grazing animal. The tracks left from previous harvesting are easily seen in fields as they produce significantly less and are prone to burn off in drought conditions.
Even fields previously re-seeded are prone to compaction damage.
Often fields were ploughed wet, which caused a pan at the bottom of the furrow. The soil was then power harrowed at 10cm to create a seed bed which created a second pan and consequently grass roots struggled to get below this pan, when they should be growing 25 to 30cm down.
Another sign of soil compaction is slurry or farm yard manure being slow to break down and incorporate into the soil - this is due to low worm/microbial activity created by compaction and compounded by overdosing with slurry.
All these factors make it important to take a spade and look at your soil structures to see if they are holding back your forage production.
For a helpful guide to soil compaction, watch our video, available on the Barenbrug Youtube Channel.

Maintaining grassland delivers results
Good grassland management is essential to maximise meat and milk output and enterprise profitability, while producing high yields of grass, maximising intake and promoting animal performance, while at the same time avoiding wastage of grass.
A simple, inexpensive way to assess your grassland and optimise your grazing potential is to use our free BARENBRUG SWARD STICK. This simple, durable, waterproof plastic stick is about the size of a 30cm ruler and printed with guideline DM content figures and stocking rates for cattle and sheep making it very easy to use.
To get the best out of the sward stick you must walk the whole field in a random pattern taking around 50 readings per field keeping the stick upright and reading leaf top measurements, not seed heads/stems.
It is important to take a significant number of readings in order to calculate an average for that field, evening out any extreme areas. This should be done at regular intervals
(weekly/fortnightly as practical) and all averages recorded to build up a picture of how a field is performing over time. The sward stick measures up to 15cm in height as anything over this should be shut off for cutting to make the best use of it.
Using targeted grazing heights and stocking rates can allow a field to keep a denser, leafy sward with good quality. Assessing the sward over a period of time will identify any times of the year where supply significantly exceeds or falls short of demand to allow for targeted supplementation or for extra winter feed to be produced or even more stock to be bought in e.g. store lambs.
Monitoring grass is a very useful tool as it can identify poorer performing fields allowing for targeted solutions i.e. addressing problems highlighted in a soil sample or reseeding.
Measuring grass dry matter allows better use of the grazing and can reduce the amount of bought in dry matter required.

Barenbrug’s BarForage range of grass seed mixtures has been formulated carefully using a number of species and varieties and should suit almost any circumstance in Northern Ireland.
The make-up of each mixture and its subsequent management can have significant impacts on the longevity and levels of production you can achieve.
By considering how long the ley is intended to last and what is required from it, the mixture selector can guide you in the right direction whilst also taking into account factors such as protein requirement or weed control.
Each mixture is formulated for a specific role, for example, varieties chosen for overseeding mixtures are included to allow establishment within an existing sward. To allow for effective weed control, clover is omitted from one particular mixture.
On each mixture page you will find relevant information and data that highlights the importance of using quality varieties in your mixture to improve its performance.
If you are in any doubt, contact your local supplier or one of our regional managers who can advise you on the merits of a mixture which will be suitable for the requirements of the job.

1 Dig a soil assessment pit to look for compaction and plant rooting
structure which should should go 30cm deep in PRG/ timothy sward.
2Address compaction with aerators or sub-soilers as needed. Soil testing (4”
deep) would also be advantageous as high levels of water can leach nutrients and reduce pH significantly.
Assess what plants are there – learn to identify what species you want to have e.g. PRG/Timothy. Check for weed grasses, they are usually shallow rooted and pull out very easily.
If they make up more than 30% of the sward, harrow hard to remove them.
With a sward of more than 70% weed grasses the best option is to reseed the sward.
3 Minimise competition by sheep grazing or cutting for silage, prior to
sowing.
4Do not fertilise or spread slurry on the field before overseeding.
5 Control perennial weeds before seeding by spraying with a selective
weed-killer.
6 Use a spring tine harrow to remove any dead stalks, thatch and shallow
rooted weed grasses. Make sure that the tines are working the top 1cm of the soil as this will create the seed bed for the new seeds. Sow when the soil conditions are neither excessively dry nor wet.
7 Overseed with a specialist mixture designed to establish rapidly
and boost production and one that is aggressive enough to establishing against the existing plants.
8 Roll the sward to ensure good seed contact with the soil to conserve
moisture.
9 Apply a suitable insecticide for control of leatherjackets for spring/
early summer sowings and frit fly for late summer/early autumn sowings.
10 Graze lightly when the seedlings are 10cm high and continue at
frequent intervals until the plants are well established.
All the best things start from the ground up and it’s important you choose a mixture designed for the job.

1
Many grass fields have suffered severely over the past couple of years with compaction, poaching or tracking by machinery and waterlogging due to the high rainfall.
Left to their own devices damaged areas within fields will ‘green up’, with non-productive weed species like meadow-grass, which are naturally occurring in all grass swards and have a yield 50 percent less than perennial ryegrass. Their nitrogen response is only 17% of that of PRG so spreading Nitrogen to boost yield can be a very expensive mistake.
Follow our simple guide to improving any problem fields you may have.
Why is overseeding vital? For many farmers it is not always possible in terms of acreage or time to take a field out of the rotation for a full reseed and this is when overseeding becomes very important.
Any existing productive grasses present in the ley already have an established root system for access to water and nutrients and an established leaf canopy to capture light for photosynthesis; therefore it is imperative to use a mixture specifically designed for overseeding.
Overseeding mixtures contain tetraploid perennial ryegrass varieties meaning the seeds are larger, have more aggressive growth habits and therefore are faster to establish within an existing sward.

Ensign RED is a new unique mixture of red clovers. The blend of varieties balances production through the growing season, while maintaining excellent persistency and disease resistance.
Red clover swards, managed correctly and used in the right circumstances can meet the forage requirements of many farms and significantly improve the protein content and overall feeding value of the winter forage. It is better suited to silage production than white clover because of much more erect growth habit, up to 80cm and its significantly higher forage yields.
•Red clover silage has a high crude protein content of 16% to 20% and a ME content of 10 to 12MJ/KG DM
•Because red clover is high in phyto-oestrogen, breeding sheep should be kept off for six weeks either side of tupping
•Store/fat lambs can be fattened very effectively on red clover silage aftermaths
•Low levels of structural carbohydrate in the leaf result in higher intakes, better feed conversion and therefore improved animal performance
•TREVVIO is exceptionally high yielding with 11t DM/ha in the first cut
Ensign White Clover Blend gives better animal performance, higher milk yields and better live weight gains. It also produces a better quality sward, with fewer weeds and less disease. It has an exceptionally long growing season and ‘fixes’ free nitrogen from the atmosphere for maximum production.
•By using a blend of different varieties there are always at least two that are best suited to whatever the management being applied to the sward
•This year’s blend has been improved with the addition of KATY. The new variety boasts exceptionally good mid-season growth.
•Animals prefer to graze a clover/grass sward - this results in higher voluntary intakes and better animal performance

• BLAZA Crimson clover is a very high yielding single cut annual clover, which will grow from seed to flowering in around 120 days, but should be cut before flowering for maximum quality. Its forage has a protein content of around 20% and an ME of 12-14MJ. It is a tap rooted clover, so improving the soil structure and will “fix” over 40kg/h Nitrogen
• LIGHTENING Persian clover is a high quality, multi-cut species, that has similar forage quality to Crimson clover, it will survive in the sward, whether cut or grazed through the autumn. It has a fibrous rooting system that will improve soil organic matter
WHAT PROTO PLUS OFFERS
Proto Plus is designed to deliver maximum production of a very high protein forage from spring sowing, followed by an autumn and winter grazing sward suitable for sheep and overwintering cattle. It also offers a flexible alternative to forage brassicas or westerwolds.
It’s been developed, tested and proven by Barenbrug France where it is widely sold. Here in the UK it’s been vigorously tested in trials at Cropvale and Loughgall, with results showing Proto Plus delivers a 12% increase in yield over Italian ryegrass and 7% more protein content.
In 2013 we trialled Proto Plus on beef sheep and dairy farms in South West Scotland under both cutting and grazing managements with some excellent results.
The trialists were mostly sheep farmers and used ProtoPlus as a ‘break’ crop, so they will enjoy the benefits of the nitrogen returned to the land from the clover content.
Find out more about the trials and results on our website.
