SHARE Iowa SHARE Iowa is a food buying group that purchases large quantities of

food at wholesale prices. SHARE Iowa participants usually see a 30-

50% savings off of retail prices. A large network of volunteers forms

the backbone of the organization and is the foundation of the cost

savings that are available.

Warehouse volunteers sort, bag and assemble the food to ship out to

the many SHARE distribution locations. Volunteers at the distribution

sites help sort and bag individual orders. The group encourages those

participating in the program and benefitting from the food savings to

give back a little by volunteering locally.

There are no membership fees or dues, and no income guidelines or

restrictions. Anyone can participate in the program.

Iowa Food Assistance cards (food stamp EBT cards) can be used to

pay for SHARE Iowa orders.

ORDERING:

Orders must be placed and paid for in advance of the pick-up dates.

Orders can be placed online at www.shareiowa.com/index.php or

through the local distribution site coordinator

DISTRIBUTION LOCATIONS:

Community / Church Gardens Community gardens are an easy, inexpensive way to gain gardening

experience. New gardeners are sometimes paired with an experienced

gardener / mentor. Some community tools are also available.

Examples: Edmund’s – Oakridge – Sherman Hill Community Garden;

Franklin Avenue Community Garden.

CONTACT: City of Des Moines’ Parks and Recreation Department

Some churches that happen to have available land have also gotten

into gardening. Volunteers work together and share the bounty with

church members and area food pantries. Example: Faith & Grace

Garden (St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 1020 24th St., West Des

Moines).

nutritious food for you and your family, and a deep sense of

accomplishment for all who helped from planting through harvest,

preparing, and eating.

SPECIAL BONUS: Iowa Food Assistance cards can be used to

purchase seeds and plants for fruits and vegetables.

Wesley Life Meal Programs

Meals on Wheels Home-delivered meals are a service that allows many older adults

(ages 60+) to live well and independently and to remain in their own

homes for as long as they desire and are safe to do so.

These meals for seniors provide nutrition and social benefits that

cannot be matched. Studies show that participants in home-delivered

meal programs are more likely after 6 months on the program to be in

compliance with their diets as prescribed by their physicians.

Participants also experience significant increases in their nutritional

intakes and are less likely to be food insecure.

Wesley Life is the provider of “Meals on Wheels” to senior residents of

Polk County.

For more information, please call (515) 699-3243 or visit

www.wesleylife.org/wesley-meals-on-wheels.aspx

Wesley Life First Step Meal Program The Wesley Life First Step Meal Program provides home-delivered

meals to people 60 years and older who are recovering from a hospital

stay. The program includes 10 hot free meals plus two fresh fruits/

vegetables baskets during the first 10 days after returning home from

a hospital or skilled-facility stay.

Research has shown that it takes closer to two weeks to help an older

adult who is returning home from the hospital regain his or her

strength and be able to return to regular activities of daily living.

For more information, please call (515) 699-3243 or visit

www.wesleylife.org/wesley-meals-on-wheels.aspx

Non-DMARC Food Pantries

There are a number of non-DMARC food pantries in the Des Moines area. Most are located in neighborhood churches and have limited hours. A few of these are listed below. In some circumstances, a family may exhaust all of their food supplies, including food from a DMARC food pantry, as well as their financial resources within 30 days. Because we are not able to accommodate such situations within our Food Pantry Network, we may refer a family to a non-DMARC food pantry. Please contact the pantry at the number indicated to verify location and hours. You can also contact the DMARC office at (515) 277-6969 to see if we have other locations or more updated information. Ongoing Food Assistance Iowa Food Assistance (food stamps)

Iowa Food Assistance is a program to help low-income people buy food for a better, healthier diet. Food Assistance is now provided through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card (image at left). The EBT card looks and works like a debit card.

Formerly known as ‘food stamps’, the program is also called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) in some states. Applying for an Iowa Food Assistance EBT card is RISK FREE.

Qualifying for an Iowa Food Assistance EBT card Eligibility is based on the number of people in the household and on how much monthly income is left after certain expenses (deductions) are subtracted. For purposes of the Iowa Food Assistance Program, a household is defined as a group of people who live together, and who buy food and prepare meals together.

Households at or below 130% of poverty usually qualify for some level of assistance. Current Federal Poverty Level (FPL) information can be found online by searching for “federal poverty levels”.

Applying for Iowa Food Assistance The Iowa DHS encourages people to apply online because the

application processing time is much shorter. The online application is

available at: https://secureapp.dhs.state.ia.us/oasis/

For help in completing an online application, contact the DMARC Food

Pantry Network office at (515) 277-6969.

Paper applications are also available at local DHS offices.
