HOUSINGMonmouth County offers its residents an exceptional quality of life.

Here in the central portion of scenic New Jersey, just fifteen miles or lessto the Atlantic's beaches, and just an hour or less from either Philadelphia orNew York City, residents enjoy unlimited housing options.

Our thirteen formerly agricultural communities are rich in history andscenery. The villages – like Freehold, Englishtown, Colts Neck, Roosevelt andFarmingdale – offer two hundred year old, well-maintained homes in pic-turesque village settings, often with hundred-year old trees in the boulevardsand parks. The townships, where the majority of residents now live, offereverything from historic farm houses on a few acres to planned residentialdevelopments with hundreds of neighbors, in well designed and perfectlymaintained communities.

The school systems have been designed to accommodate young stu-dents, as well as teenagers. Elementary schools are typically quite close tohome, often within walking distance for many students. The high schoolsand vocational schools are centrally located and are often within a ten-minute drive for most students.

Because so much of Monmouth County is former farmland, interspacedwith large groves of mature trees, residents of this beautiful part of NewJersey often comment that they live in a pastoral community and are blessedwith an excellent road system that quickly takes them to work, to school, toshopping and entertainment.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRYMonmouth County offers local businesses and industries a major advantage thanks to severalinternational airports, intercontinental railroads, the East Coast’s most strategic ports and a superb network of interstate highways.

These significant advantages enable our community to take itsplace among the best places to do business in the mid-Atlanticregion. Clearly, this is a great place for business and industry tolocate or expand. Equally important to the success of businessoperations is the community’s exceptionally strong work ethic.Add to those advantages our extraordinarily high level of edu-cation, a favorable tax structure and AAA bond ratings, andyou get a community that can’t be beat. Among the majornames that have chosen to call Monmouth County homeare CentraState Healthcare System, Monmouth MedicalCenter, Brookdale Community College and New JerseyNatural Gas. Other major industries include healthcare, banking, management services, and retailoperations. These employers rely upon the avail-ability of the well-trained, highly skilled workforce that exists in and around the county.Even though agriculture is no longer thedominant industry in Monmouth County, our area, thanks to its growing season ofalmost 200 days, is home to a largenumber of farms and nurseries.

Monmouth County’s farmers aremajor producers of cabbage, bar-ley and peppers. According torecent statistics available fromthe Rutgers CooperativeExtension, the county ranksfirst in equine trainingand breeding facilities, second in the state incertified nurseries, floriculture crops, horse farms andAsian

vegetables; third in sweet corn and sod and Christmas tree farms; and fifth inalfalfa, soybean, pepper and tomato production. The county currently ranks5th in the state in tourism dollars, according to the Monmouth CountyDepartment of Economic Development and Tourism, and it is the state’sfourth largest industry. While the seashore attractions on the eastern part ofthe county comprise much of that amount, western Monmouth County hassuccessfully attracted visitors to our region’s museums, historical sites, battle-fields, fairs and festivals, county parks and auto and horse racing events.

The Monmouth County Department of Economic Development andTourism, an agency of Monmouth County, provides assistance at every levelof business development to businesses that are growing and expanding inMonmouth County. This “one-stop shop,” located right in the heart of down-town Freehold, offers entrepreneurs and established businesses one-on-oneassistance in locating and purchasing land and buildings. The agency’s staffprovides information on obtaining permits, developing site plans, anddesigning financing packages. The staff also provides assistance with work-force development and readily links employers with any other agency ororganization that may be of assistance.

The Monmouth County Workforce Investment Board (WIB) is activelyworking to bring together the public and private sectors to overseeMonmouth County’s workforce development activities. The WIB provides ser-vices to employers in a unified and efficient manner. Among its accomplish-ments is the development of a countywide Welfare-to-Work program, a OneStop Career Center, and the creation of a Youth Council to provide work-relat-ed programs for at-risk youth.

HEALTH CARECentraState Healthcare System – Your Community Partner!

In 1962, a group of citizens came together and began raising money tobuild a small, community hospital in Freehold. Today, this independent, com-munity-based hospital is part of the CentraState Healthcare System, a non-profit community health organization consisting of an acute-care hospital, anambulatory campus, three-senior living communities, a family medicine resi-dency program, and a charitable foundation.

CentraState continues to maintain deep roots in central New Jersey. Ourmission is to enhance the health and well-being of our community throughthe compassionate delivery of quality healthcare. We are a community part-ner for not only care, but perhaps more importantly, the preservation of goodhealth, which is why our focus has changed dramatically in the last fifty years. We are increasingly centered on helping people get and stay healthy throughour on-site fitness center, health and wellness lectures, health screenings, rehabilitation, nutrition counseling and education programs for children.

For the past several years, CentraState has earned a reputation for itscomprehensive cancer care, and in 2013, the Statesir Cancer Center atCentraState affiliated with the John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUniversity Medical Center for oncology services. We recognize that drivinghours to a specialized center for a cancer diagnosis and for frequent treat-ments can take a toll on a cancer patient during an already stressful time.Patients can continue seeing their primary care physician, while getting treat-ment from their cancer team who work with their primary care physician, locally. Our cancer team is comprised of oncologists who are trained atrenowned national cancer centers, including Harvard, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and surgeonstrained in the latest minimally invasive procedures, including two who areamong the first in the world to perform groundbreaking, video-assistedthoracic surgery. It’s also advanced treatments like robotic surgery and thelatest clinical trials with promising new developments. By building out a

Allentown – 609-259-7565

Like most country villages in colonialAmerica, Allentown developed around its mills. The earliest mill was built by Nathan Allen in1706 on York Road, where it crossed DoctorsCreek. As the farms in the area grew, so didthe need for blacksmith shops, wheelwrights, carriage makers, chair makers, shoemakers, and seamstresses. By the end of the 18thcentury more than 24 commercial enterprisesexisted in this small, rural village. Allentownwas also a center for travel across New Jer-sey. The York Road (now known as MainStreet) was a main road across Jersey fromthe Amboys to Burlington. The town became abusy stage stop and as many as four tavernsor inns existed in the area. There are currently220 buildings and homes in the designatedHistoric District that date prior to 1860 andsome dating back to the 18th century.

Today, Allentown Borough continues tomaintain its rich history while also offering thealmost two thousand residents of this historic, New Jersey borough with the best in unique community living.

Although its earliest settlements dateback to 1688 with property owned by JamesJohnston, Englishtown is named for the Eng-lish family that purchased a large tract offertile land in Monmouth County sometimebefore 1730. During the historically significantBattle of Monmouth (June 28, 1778) English-town was the headquarters for the Americanarmy. The Village Inn, still located in the bor-ough, served as General Charles Lee’sheadquarters. In the dining room of this inn,General Washington and Lord Stirling drew upthe court martial papers citing Lee for his con-duct during and after the battle. For more than

a century, the inn served as a stagecoachstop offering food and lodging to the wearytravelers between the cities of New York andPhiladelphia. During the Revolutionary War,one of Monmouth County’s main roads ranfrom Monmouth Court House (now Freehold)to Englishtown and on into Middlesex County.Because Englishtown was on this main high-way it developed into a trading center for thesurrounding countryside. In the middle of theeighteen hundreds and early nineteen hun-dreds, Englishtown was a busy, prosperouscountry town. Many of the existing homeswere built in the later part of the eighteenhundreds, and a few homes that were built inthe seventeen hundreds still remain as part ofEnglishtown’s heritage. Englishtown is locatedon scenic Lake Weamaconk. The village con-tains quaint shops, eateries, as well as theHistorical Village Inn on its main thoroughfare, which leads to two major New Jersey attrac-tions – the Englishtown Auction and FleaMarket and Old Bridge Raceway Park. Thesetwo popular destinations bring visitors fromthroughout the mid-Atlantic region to English-town on weekends.

Known as "Today's Town... with Yester-day's Touch," Farmingdale, and its MainStreet, date back to an Indian path toward theManasquan River. In 1830, construction of aManasquan River Dam led to the discovery ofa 4-mile triangular deposit of Marl, a naturalbed of fertilizer beneficial to farm crops. Thetown of Farmingdale started out with twostores, two taverns and 10-12 dwellings.Farmingdale was formerly known as "marsh'sbog" and then Upper Squankum. It becameFarmingdale in 1854 and in 1903 was incor-porated into its own municipality.

Now, more than a century later, gov-erned by a Mayor and Borough Council,Farmingdale, at 0.5 square miles in landarea, is an established residential and lightindustrial community of approximately 1,600residents. Its vibrant, small-town commercialdistrict meets the needs of its citizens, whosewell-maintained homes on small lots evokememories of days gone by.

A look around Farmingdale today stillspeaks of yesteryear. It is this commitmentthat ensures the values and economic stabili-ty of Farmingdale for future generations.

maintains that role today. Farms of everydescription dot the landscape and coexist in a modern landscape filled with houses, shopping malls, small businesses, andrestaurants and taverns.

For a town whose name means “goodbread,” Manalapan has a great deal morethan bread to boast about. This exciting com-munity of more than 38,000 residents is thriving, planning for the future, andaggressively preserving its rural heritage.

Known today for its exclusive residentialcommunities and excellent school systems,Marlboro began as an agricultural communityin the late 1600s. Formally established in1848, the township is called Marlboro after itsrich deposits of the natural fertilizer – marl.

Today, while lush farmland and rollingcountryside are still found throughout theTownship, agriculture now plays a modestpart in the Township’s economy. The resi-dents of Marlboro, as with most communitiesin Western Monmouth County, are employedin service industries, sales and in manufac-turing and construction.

The Township is home to the MarlboroTree. This enormous black willow has beencertified by the New Jersey Forest Service asa “State Champion” tree, signifying that it isthe largest known tree of its species in theState of New Jersey, and the largest tree ofany kind in Marlboro Township.

Marlboro Township is the third largestcommunity in terms of population in WesternMonmouth County. Its community websitehas won numerous design awards, and is an extensive source of information aboutmany aspects of living and working in Marlboro Township.

Millstone, the “crossroads of CentralNew Jersey,” was settled in the early 1600sby immigrants from Scotland, Holland, Irelandand England. The municipality was officiallyincorporated in 1844. For over 100 years,

until 1990, the population of the townshipwas exceptionally stable, with a total increaseof no more than 400 residents, However, inthe past decade, Millstone Township has“been discovered” and the population hasincreased dramatically – by more than 70percent – to its current population of 10,478.

Millstone is a lively agricultural commu-nity with a lovely downtown district and an active residential population. It is still athriving and lively agricultural and horse community –with a proud rural heritage andwith an extremely promising future. Recent residential development throughout the com-munity has been planned and incorporatedinto the environment. Projects, like the excit-ing residential golf community known asCharleston Springs, continue to enhance thequality of life of the township, while maintain-ing the community’s respect for itsagricultural heritage.

Roosevelt Borough, named for PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt, was established in1937. Built under the New Deal’s ResettlementAdministration, it was settled by Jewish gar-ment workers from New York and Philadelphia.Originally, the town included a cooperative fac-tory, a retail store, farms and residences. SinceWorld War II, Roosevelt has grown into a larg-er, mostly residential community.

The borough has traditionally attractedunique individuals with compassion, insightand skill. For artists, professionals, environ-mentalists, craftspeople, farmers andbusiness owners, the desire to succeed and excel has set Roosevelt apart from other communities.

What is particularly exciting about Roosevelt is that it is so new in comparison to its neighboring communities. Where othertowns in Western Monmouth County arethree centuries old, Roosevelt is just sevendecades old. Yet, the community has estab-lished a cohesiveness that is similar tocommunities much older.
