February Chamber Network Luncheon"Proposed Elimination of

Local Redevelopment Agencies"Please join the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce at

our February Chamber Network Luncheon, Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 12:00 p.m. at Pacino’s Spaghetti Factory, 1100 Tehachapi Blvd, #A. Our guest speaker will be David James, City of Tehachapi Community Development Director. David will be discussing Governor Brown's budget proposal to abolish local redevelopment agencies.

Governor Brown, as a component of his State budget proposal, is threatening to undo years of redevelopment legislation and, in the process, eliminate redevelopment agencies altogether. Proposition 22 which was approved by 61% of the voters was intended to protect local revenue from State raids including redevelopment funds. However, if redevelopment agencies are no longer legal recognized entities then the apparent logic is that there is no taking of funds.

Tehachapi established its redevelopment agency in January of 2000. The Tehachapi Redevelopment Agency (RDA) has been the catalyst for the economic development, downtown revitalization, grant procurement and infrastructure development that has occurred since the agency was formed. The loss of the Tehachapi RDA will have dire consequences for the City of Tehachapi and the City’s ability to sustain the progress we have made over the last few years.

The cost is $15 for Chamber Members, $20 for Non-Chamber members, which includes lunch. Reservations are required. Please make your reservation by calling the Chamber at 661-822-4180. Reservation deadline is Friday, February 11, 2011.

Tehachapi Mountain Festival® Theme Contest Announced

The City of Tehachapi, with the support of many community organizations, has partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a community-wide “Brand” for marketing the Tehachapi area to visitors, residents and businesses in the year 2011 and beyond. According to North Star CEO Don McEachern, at the heart of Tehachapi’s brand will be its competitive differentiator -- in other words, what makes the community special so it can stand out in the marketplace. One of the best places to find that figurative nugget of marketing gold is in the hearts and minds of the people who call Tehachapi home.

Toward this end, North Star developed a customized Community-wide Online Survey. The questionnaire has been carefully crafted using insights gleaned from community leaders, businesses and residents to determine the city’s strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities. The entire Tehachapi community is invited and encouraged to participate in this important community-wide initiative. The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s/WR89JPM and can be completed online. Printed surveys will also be available for pick up and drop off at Tehachapi City Hall and the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce, both located in downtown Tehachapi.

“We have partnered with more than 130 communities in 30 states nationwide, and I can’t emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members,” stressed McEachern. “To learn what makes a community special, you have to go to the people who spend more than just their money and time there. You have to go to the people who spend their lives there.”

If you are interested in learning more about Tehachapi’s branding initiative, check out www.brandtehachapi.com or call the City’s Capital Projects Manager, Chris Kirk, at (661) 822-2200. To learn more about North Star Destination Strategies, go to www.northstarideas.com.

The Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce is offering an opportunity for our members to enjoy more recognition, visibility and opportunities through our Chairman’s Circle. The Chairman’s Circle offers a number of ways to market, advertise and promote your company on a regular, consistent basis.

The Chairman’s Circle offers four specific packages ranging from $1,000 to $7,000. It is the Chamber’s goal

to help you develop an annual package of benefits that will raise the visibility of your company in the community. By strategically planning your marketing and advertising activities in these areas, you can develop an individual campaign that will deliver bottom line benefits.

Chairman’s Circle members enjoy the convenience of a one-time all-inclusive transaction that insures representation at Chamber events, in its publications and on the Chamber’s website. This is a wonderful way to plan your budget each year. The Chairman’s Circle will not only let you plan for your sponsorships of annual events, but will also avoid those many calls individuals receive to gather support for the Chamber’s many great events.

Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the Chairman’s Circle. I invite you to arrange a visit to discuss the benefits and privileges of membership in this special group of members who have made an annual commitment to support the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce through sponsorships and marketing opportunities. I look forward to working with you on a program to enhance your company’s recognition and visibility in our community.
