The current release coincides with Greeces taking over thePresidency of the Council of the European Union for the rstsemester of 2014. It includes a set of key statistical data forGreece compiled mainly by the Hellenic Statistical Authority.
The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) will be in chargeof preparing and conducting the meetings of the CouncilWorking Party on Statistics. In this respect, the Greek Presi-dency will strive to complete the pending legislative dossiers
that have been already well advanced and to achieveprogress on initiated proposals of statistical acts.
The Greek Presidency will continue the work under way forthe provision of relevant and high-quality official EuropeanStatistics to underpin the development, implementation andmonitoring of Union policies. It will pay particular attentionto enhancing condence in official statistics, based on com-munity law on statistics, commitment of national govern-ments and compliance with the principles of the EuropeanStatistics Code of Practice.
As part of the effort to achieve the fundamental goals of qual-ity and condence in European Statistics, wherever they areproduced, the Greek Presidency will promote discussion andconsideration of a more integrated and independent Euro-pean Statistical System (ESS), leading to more harmonised,
high-quality and reliable European Statistics, while at thesame time improving the cost effectiveness and efficiency ofthe production of European Statistics.
