The Green Book was a travel guide intended to help African American who were visiting an unfamiliar place avoid social obstacles prevalent during the period of racial segregation, commonly referred to as Jim Crow. The Green Book listed businesses that would accept African American customers. It was published by Victor H. Green.

Victor H. Green, a 44-year-old black postal carrier in Harlem, relied on his own experiences

and on recommendations from black members of his postal service union for the inaugural guide bearing his name, The Negro Motorist Green-Book, in 1937. The 15-page directory covered Green’s home turf, the New York metropolitan area, listing establishments that welcomed blacks. The power of the guide, says Ramsey, also the author of a children’s book and a play focused on Green-Book history, was that it “cre-ated a safety net. If a person could travel by car—and those who could, did—they would feel more in control of their destiny. The Green-Book was what they needed.”

Women Leading OHIOThe Women’s Center, under the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, provides an early career faculty and staff development program, entitled Women Leading OHIO. Despite the major strides towards equality women have made in the workplace and higher education, there still remains a confidence and leadership gap. This program, which lasts for a full academic year, is cohort based and includes workshops, guest speakers, networking and social opportunities to help early career faculty in their career development and transition to Ohio University. The program requires a fee to participate (paid for by your unit), although scholars may be available.

Lactation RoomsOhio University is continuing to develop strategies to be supportive of parents on campus, including faculty, staff, and students, as well as visitors. The university has designated lactation rooms, with various equipment, including: a Medela Symphony Plus Pump, a glider and ottoman, small table, white noise cancellation machine, microwave, refrigerator, lamp, and mirror.

Women’s Achievement DinnerJoin the Women’s Center, and the organizing committee, in honoring and celebrating the achievements of women (faculty, staff, and alum) at Ohio University. This Appreciation Dinner is an opportunity for us to highlight the successes of women in a variety of roles, and to lift up those doing work in areas that may go unrecognized as “women’s work” or more feminized labor. These awards are meant to honor women on campus, broadly defined.

The Young Women Leaders ProgramCo-founded in 1997 by Edith “Winx” Lawrence, Ph.D. and Kimberley Roberts, Ph.D., and sponsored by the University of Virginia Women’s Center and Curry School of Education, the Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP) is an innovative mentoring program that is designed to empower middle school girls and college women to be leaders of themselves and in their families, schools, and communities. Ohio University participates as a sister-site. Anyone, regardless of gender identity, may participate in the Ohio University program. The program currently works with Athens Middle School as a collaborative site.
