L'apprenti shows a symbolic success in developinga commercial centre and teaching in its goal ofbecoming a centre of excellence for research anddevelopment as well as providing products and servicesin the areas of human capital infrastructure and foodservice management. Therefore, outdoor environmentof this complex should be beautiful, vibrant and enrichcampus life. These "outdoor rooms" should enhancecustomer experience and enliven the space, createplaces where people want to gather and enableinterior restaurant patrons to interact with cafe patronsand passer-by (Ratio Architects, 2011).

Bachelor landscape architecture (BLA) student's yeartwo, Universiti Putra Malaysia has been given a task todesign L'Apparenti Deli outdoor landscape. The studentswere to apply the landscape design principles such asunity, scale, balance, simplicity, variety, emphasis andsequence in creating a respectable and convenienceoutdoor environment for the complex. The purposes ofthis assignment are to explore the ability of the students inanalysing landscape elements using landscape designprinciples, to solve real design problems through designprocess, to produce a professional landscape masterplan for small scale area and presenting a clear designidea with the supporting of technology. At the end ofthe project, students are required to produce inventoryplan, analysis plan, conceptual plan, L'ApparentiDeli landscape master plan, detail designs (section-elevations and perspective drawings).

Thisproject is based on the concept of student centredlearning (SCL) in which students became key playersin a session of learning and teaching. Hence, this

project emphasizes on students' responsibjlity for planning, monitoring and evaluating all forms of learning activitiesincluding that of interacting with lecturers and otherstudents, researching on issues and problem solving, andways of assessing and enquiring learning (CADE, 2011).Indirectly, this method encourages students to activelyengage in learning activities with the help of lecturersacting as facilitators.

L'apprenti Deli landscape design isthe project of LandscapeDesign Studio (LAN300l) course. This course covers smallscale landscape projects which involve basic problems inlandscape design. Emphasis ison landscape desiqn process, detail design and planting design. The course objective is,firstly to solve design problems at small scale sites throughthe application of proper design process. Secondly, is totrain students to present their design ideas professionally. The course involves medium-scale landscape projects withthe main focus in solving complex site planning problems atinstitution areas, public parks or resorts. Four artefacts wereselected as case studies under this topic.

A site visit was carried out at L'Apparenti Deli, UniversitiPutra Malaysia where the students visited the site andinterviewed staffs and users of the L'Apparenti Deliconcerning the green outdoor environment there.During the site visit, the final year students of BachelorFood Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysiaalso shared their expertise and knowledge. Furtherdiscussions were conducted at the Faculty of Designand Architecture involving these two groups of studentsto further discuss about the site inventory, analysisand client needs. Then, inventory and analysis planswere produced as a group effort. Before the studentsproduce their individual plans, brainstorming sessionswere conducted at Cameron Highlands, Pahang inorder to give a clear picture about the project andallowing the students to have a good design ideas.

Afterwards, the synthesis plan, idea development andconceptual plan followed. The project concludes with afinal master landscaping plan proposal from which selecteddetail areas were chosen for elaboration.

DESIGN SOLUTIONDISCUSSION / FUTURESTUDY

The L'apperenti Deli, UPM demonstrates succesfully thestudents' ability to design and present and communicatetheir ideas. They had grasped the understanding of howa well design green outdoor environment could provide aconvenience environment to reduce the stress of restaurantusers as well as managing the interconnect indoor andoutdoor spaces. The design of multiple uses of spaces suchas public areas, semi-private areas and private areas offerchoices to users for choosing the types of areas they prefer.

Amanda RiskyPurnama designed D' Lapprentiinto a fine dining restaurant, cafe and alsoa place for apprentice students from theFaculty of Food Science and Technologyin UPM. His early synthesis discovered theplace lacking of image, characteristics andfacilities. The surrounding area is also emptyand abandoned. Applying the concept ofPappilon Jardin, Riskycreated an integratedenvironmental -friendly landscape. Inspiredby the French culture and design, heintroduced four main elements comprise ofArt, Nature, People and Cuisine which arearticulated in a butterfly spatial design. Theproposed design was able to change theexisting bored setting into a landscape thatis full with greater character, image andfascinating elements. His design awaits theuniversity's community to spend their timetasting the best cuisine prepared by thestudents in a vivid environment. 121

L'apprenti is the youngest birth Complex FoodServices of Food Service and Management,Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UniversitiPutra Malaysia. It was a symbol of success inbringing commercialism into a learning centre. Itaspires a vision to be a successful developmentcentre in food product research and services. Infulfiling the vision, this project applied a conceptof "river flow", reflecting the idea of connectingnature and people. River flow means that the flowsof the space arrangement is smooth, active, andenergetic and creates the motion of the place. This idea can yield intangible benefits to the usersand staff's such as improved mental and physicalhealth. However, this proposal lacks in introducingsuitable plants that portrays a river environment. The proposal could have been better with a simpledesign that creates oppotunity for extensive spacewith outward and inward visual experiences .

Landscape design for L'Apparenti Deli aimed at projectingan image of a successful commercial food outlet. L'Apparentiacts as a centre for research products and food servicesthat emphasizes on quality, identity, functional and aestheticvalues. With the concept "Judicleux". the design envisioned toprovide a unique and pleasant outdoor eating environmentfor the customers and yet not neglecting the practical skills infood service management for the students/staffs of the centre.A variety of spaces were created for the customers to enjoytheir meals and to further explore the site through unobstructedcirculation surrounding the entire area. Energy and waterconservations are being considered in the design. Nonetheless, the design could be better if the location of gazebos andpergolas were within the crowd vicinity. it will make themmore utilizable. Better solution on spatial division and plantingschemes could be beneficial to the scheme as they couldcontribute to a more cohesive and meaningful design.

Thisproposal of L'Apprenti Cafe of UPM attempts to give a new image of outdoorcafe located in UPM Serdang. The design innovatively plays with the outdoordining experience blended with the landscape design. Iskandar's idea is toconnect people and place in an ecologically sensitive, economically sustainableenvironment that offer great values for the L'Apprenti. The concept of 'SplendidMetamorphosis' stresses on discoverring and protecting the spirit of the placethrough sustainable landscape design. It forwards the concept of significant roleof transformation of cafe image that enhances the existing value of the character. The strength of the project lies in the idea where the whole site planning of anoutdoor cafe isharmonized and united through colour and form composition. Thedesign purposely to enhance the character of outdoor cafe. Each space at theL'Apprenti Cafe was given consideration where a quality of outdoor ambiencewas introduced. However, the weaknesses lie in the selection of plant species tocompliment with the concept of 'Splendid Metamorphosis'. The detail design ofoutdoor cafe area would require details describing~he dining, accessibility andinterconnection to other spaces.

DESIGN GOALDiscovering, enhancing, and protecting the pervadingspirit of the place through sustainable landscape design.
