GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT

MAY 19, 2019 9:00 AND 10:30 A.M.

We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor. • For children from 3’s through 7th grade, we have a wonderful Church School program during our 9:00 hour. • And if your kids get squirmy, the Church Parlor has toys; the service is amplified in the Parlor

and the seats are comfortable!

Prelude Air Gordon Young

Our Coming Together Prayer in unison:

Holy God,

we welcome one another in Your presence,

we bring our full selves to this sacred place,

we turn to You for guidance and wisdom,

we offer the best of ourselves to your service,

we open our hearts and minds to the world around us, we count on Your Spirit to bind us together as a powerful force of

love.

Amen.

Choral Introit (10:30)

* Hymn God of the Ages Hymnal, no. 725

* Unison Prayer of Confession:

Oh my goodness, Lord, confession is not easy. We sin and fail and

disappoint in ways known and unknown, public and private, large and

small, intentional and unintentional, by omission and commission. Yet,

confess we do. It’s good for the soul, we’re told. It is our first step

toward You and the gift of forgiveness You offer. Amen.

(silence for individual prayers)

Worship of God through Prayer

Sharing our Joys and Concerns

We welcome your prayer concerns. You may write them into the prayer request book in the Narthex, or contact the pastors.

Pastoral Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the

power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

Worship of God through Giving (Note: We give in many ways, by various means. Yet it is still important to “present our

offerings” on the altar as part of genuine worship, our way of giving thanks to God.)

Offering

Offertory Fall on Me Chad Vaccarino/Ian Axel

Duet - Caroline Lauf and Wendy Gerbier

* Doxology Hymnal, no. 46 (This ancient hymn is sung every Sunday to thank God for all the gifts of our lives)

Prayer of Dedication, said together:

God of every good and perfect gift, accept our gifts, perfect them

in our ministry, and bring about great good through our church.

Amen.

Unison Scripture 2 Chronicles 7:13-15

When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the

locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my

people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from

heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes

will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this

place.

Sermon My America Rev. David Rowe

CHURCH NOTES

GOOD MORNING! ….. We are so grateful to have you in church today. Love makes the world go ‘round, but people make the church go ‘round. Your presence, participation,

and help is a great encouragement to all we do in ministry and mission.

Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag

home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in

joining this church, please just speak with Alida!

At our 9:00 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Carolyn Houghton

and Junior Deacons Witt Badger and Zachary Amendola. At our 10:30 a.m.

service, you have been greeted by Deacon Carolyn Houghton, Junior Deacons

Ella Holland and Abby Jacobs, and our Junior Greeter Scarlett Jacobson. Junior

Deacons assisting with Church School are Maggie Burns, Maddy Baker, Cooper

Eckert, Eloise Gacetta, and Helen Glover. Our crib room helper today is Chloe

Whelan.

A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy

worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the street

in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so that they

may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child misses them! If

your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use of the Parlor

(through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and through the side

doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to play with toys and a

speaker which carries the service!

FABULOUS FELLOWSHIP!! After the 9am service, please join the Fellowship

Board in the Church House Memorial Room (across the street) for refreshments

and fellowship.

The flowers on the communion table are given by Laraine Petersen, thanking

all of GHCC- pastors, staff and everyone who is part of this Christ-like

community - for all that you do.

CHURCH AND COMMUNITY NOTES

Alida’s recruiting adult leaders for the Appalachia trip!! We still need about

10 more adults to accompany our 225 teenagers to West Virginia June 29th-

July 6th, for a life-changing week of service through the Appalachia Service

Project. It’s a week of home repair for families in need – but you do not need to

be a skilled carpenter!! All we need is your willingness to work alongside our

teens. Please take a look at the Adult Leader information on the ASP page of

our church website (greenfieldhillchurch.com/asp) … and if you like what you

see, click on the online adult advisor registration!

Spring is in the air! Time again for friends to gather

together at Greenfield Hill Cemetery. Our mission is to

restore our cemetery on the hill before our 300th

Anniversary. One more official “fun” day planned on Sat

June 1 – 8:30-1:30 with a cookout picnic for all our

volunteers at Noon. Thank you all for your energy and

support. Questions to Jeff Taylor at

[email protected]. 978-760-1103.

Summer Worship Leaders Sought! One of the best traditions

in our church is our lay-led services that take place each summer

Sunday at 8:15 a.m. on the Church House lawn. These services

are a chance for individuals or families in the church to have fun

sharing their faith and their thoughts in worship. We are

looking for people to help lead these summer services! The

pastors are very happy to sit with you and help plan, so you are absolutely not

on your own. A great way to get closer to God and your faith, a great project

for a family to do together! Please be in touch with Deacon Dan Carpenter

[email protected] to express your interest!

C’mon out and support the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants

(CIRI) by attending their upcoming Motown Dance Party on Friday, June 7th

from 7-10 PM at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan. This will be a

fun night with food trucks and dancing to live music, all for an amazing

cause! To purchase tickets: Buy online: www.cirimotown.givesmart.com or pay

by check to CIRI, Attn: Claudia Connor, 670 Clinton Ave., Bridgeport, CT

06605. Save the dates for this event are available in the church foyer. If you have

any questions, please direct them to Jennifer Jenkins (917.952.2469)

WORDS TO TODAY’S MUSIC

Words to Offertory by C. Vaccarino, I. Axel , M. Bocelli, F. Zampaglione

I thought sooner or later

The lights up above

Will come down in circles and guide me to love But I don’t know what’s right for me

I cannot see straight

I’ve been here too long and I don’t want to wait for it

Fly like a cannonball

Straight to my soul

Tear me to pieces and make me feel whole

I’m willing to fight for it and carry this weight

But with every step

I keep questioning what is true

Fall on me

With open arms

Fall on me

From where you are

Fall on me

With all your light

With all your light

With all your light

I close my eyes

and I'm seeing you everywhere I step outside

It's like I'm breathing you in the air

I can feel you're there

Appalachia Trip Adult

Participants needed!

June 29 – July 6, 2019

The 225 teen participants in this

year’s Appalachia Service trip are

excited to serve the people of West

Virginia – but they need you to go

with them! We can raise the money

and pack up the tools, but we can’t go

without enough adult participants! ASP

requires two adult leaders for every

crew of five youth: and with 45 crews this year, we seek 90 adult

leaders. 80 awesome people have already signed up! Can you be one

of the 10 we still need?

What’s ASP? On ASP crews of teens do home repair for families in

desperate need in West Virginia – all while developing relationships

with each other, with God, and with the families for whom they work.

As life-changing as the trip is for teens, it is also a spiritual

experience of service for the adults who accompany them. Having

some repair skills is great but not essential: far more essential is a

willingness to open your heart in service, to empower our young people

to give of themselves. And, yes, you do need to be willing to sleep on

a mattress, swing a hammer, and help drive too!

To learn more, go to greenfieldhillchurch.com/asp – or contact Rev.

Alida Ward, [email protected].
