Chuck Close• American artist

• he began copying black-and-white photographs of a female nude in colour on to canvas

• Soon he abandoned this approach he began using a black-and-white palette

• Finding this subject too interesting, he turned to neutral, black-and-white head-and-shoulder photographs as models, which he again reproduced in large scale on canvas

• He incorporated every detail of the photograph and allowed himself no interpretative freedom

Chuck Close

• He continued in the black-and-white style until 1970, when he began to use color again

• With a similarly limited range of model photographs, he experimented with various types of color marking

• Other techniques included the use of fingerprint marks and pulp paper fragments

Steps:• Grid photograph

• Grid drawing paper

• Observe each square one at a time assessing the different value scale. – concentrate on the value of a square in the photograph and replicate the

value in the corresponding square on their drawing.– Those who are able to see the value will be most successful– NoteNote: you may want to practice different values on scrap paper

• As you work, study your work from a distance from time to time as you work.

Evaluation• Did you show an awareness and understanding of the work

of chuck Close?

• Can you describe the qualities in Chuck Close did you admire?

• Did you develop an understanding of scale and proportion by studying the work of chuck close?

• Did you successfully use the ruler to make a grid and enlarge a photograph to scale?

• Did you perceive value and reproduce that using line, texture and pattern?

• Did you develop contrast?
