Griffith University: Play your part in the world

Griffith University’s global approach to teaching prepares graduates for tomorrow’s international job market. Its programs focus on industry connections and hands-on experience, which means Griffith students are already networked and connected before they graduate.

In 2010 the Australian Research Council gave Griffith University a rating of ‘world standard or better’ in 25 broad areas of research.* By this measure Griffith is among the top 10 Australian universities, with more than 90 percent of its academic staff working in these fields. Griffith is also among the top three percent of universities worldwide,* and is the number one Australian university destination for students from 28 countries.

In 2011 Griffith was ranked in the top 500 institutions for Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) (Shanghai Jiao Tong World Ranking).

Griffith Business School is internationally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International): fewer than five percent of the

world’s business schools have received this accolade. The school has also been recognised for leadership in integrating social, environmental and ethical issues into its programs. Griffith’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree was ranked 27th in the world — and number one in Australia — in the Aspen Institute’s Beyond Grey Pinstripes Global Top 100 for 2009–10.

The college offers diploma programs in:

• Biosciences

• Commerce

• Criminology and Criminal Justice

• Engineering

• Graphic Design

• Health Care

• Health Sciences

• Hotel Management

• Information Technology (IT)

• Media and Communication

QIBT offers a Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program and a Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP). These bridging

programs enable students to enter undergraduate or postgraduate studies at Griffith.

We also offer an Associate Degree in Commerce and Business, a two-year program leading to the third year of a Griffith University Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business degree.

The Mixed English and Academic Program (MEAP) is designed for students who require additional English language study. During their first semester, students undertake a combination of English language classes and one academic course from Certificate IV or a diploma program, then continue with their chosen program in the following two semesters.

* Students who have completed the Diploma of Commerce or Diploma of Hotel Management receive credit for first- year of the Associate Degree and enter in second-year.

# To be granted entry into second year of a Griffith University bachelor’s degree, you must complete the relevant diploma program and achieve all GPA entry requirements.

† If you have completed Year 12 at secondary school (or equivalent) you may transfer from Certificate IV to a diploma program after one semester if you achieve a 70 percent mark average across four courses.

‡ The MEAP is not offered with the Diploma of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Diploma of Health Care, Diploma of Health Sciences or the Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP). The MEAP is also not available for the June intakes of the Diploma of Graphic Design or the Diploma of Biosciences.

§ The Associate Degree in Commerce and Business is aimed at students who complete a QIBT Diploma of Commerce or Hotel Management with a GPA of less than 4.5. You must complete a further eight courses over one year and obtain a GPA of 4.0 for entry into the third year of the equivalent Griffith bachelor’s degree.

What is a GPA? Each student who completes a QIBT diploma will receive a grade-point average (GPA). This is a score between 0 and 7.0 that reflects average academic achievement during a program.

GPA calculations are especially relevant where a GPA requirement is part of the entry criteria for a Griffith University degree program. If you complete a Diploma of Commerce, for example, the Bachelor of Commerce has a GPA entry requirement of 4.5. GPA examples:

• a student who achieves a pass grade in eight courses with no failing grades would have a GPA of 4.0

• a student who achieves four pass grades and four credit grades across eight courses would have a GPA of 4.5

Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program

QIBT’s Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program provides a bridge between secondary school and undergraduate studies. We have designed this program to adequately prepare you for entry to university-level programs in the fields of Arts, Commerce, Design, Engineering, Health, Hotel Management, Information Technology (IT) and Science.

This program will prepare you for entry to the first year of a Griffith University bachelor’s degree. For most bachelor’s degree programs, you need to achieve a minimum GPA of 4.5 in the Certificate IV to qualify for direct entry. For programs in high demand, you may need a higher GPA.

After the Certificate IV program, you may prefer to enter a QIBT diploma program

rather than progressing straight to your degree. By completing a diploma program you will earn 80 credit points (equivalent to one year’s full-time study) towards your entry into second year of the relevant Griffith University bachelor’s degree.

Your English language preparation

If you do not meet the minimum English language requirement for your chosen program, you may be eligible for the Mixed English and Academic Program (MEAP) or you may choose to enrol in an intensive English language course at Griffith English Language Institute (GELI) to improve your English proficiency.

Mixed English and Academic Program (MEAP)

Mount Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses

The MEAP has been designed specifically for students whose English language proficiency is below what is needed to undertake a full

academic load (see page 34 for minimum entry requirements). The program is delivered by GELI on the Mount Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses.

The English language program focuses on developing general and academic English skills in reading, writing, speaking

and listening. It is combined with one academic course from QIBT’s Certificate IV or diploma programs.

To advance to QIBT’s full academic program, you will need to complete the English language component with a passing grade. Once you have finished the MEAP, you will not need to sit another external English test such as IELTS or TOEFL to continue your studies at QIBT.

Note: The MEAP is not offered with the Diplomas of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Health Care and Health Sciences or the Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP). The MEAP is also not available for the June intakes of the Diploma of Graphic Design or the Diploma of Biosciences.

eLiCOsGELI helps international students improve their English language skills through English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS). GELI programs are taught year round in independent learning centres equipped with state-of-the-art educational resources. Classes include students from many countries, and are taught by professional teachers who will take a personal interest in your particular learning needs.

You may study one of the following programs:

• General English (GE): GE is available to students with all levels of English, and will help you develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. GE programs are offered in five-week modules on the Mount Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses.

Navitas bursaries and scholarships

Navitas family bursariesNavitas offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. A bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study with a Navitas member institution.*

The first family member can be studying with a Navitas member institution at the same time as other family members, or they may have previously studied with any Navitas member institution. The bursary is granted to the second and subsequent family members who study with a Navitas member institution. For the purpose of this bursary, a family member is defined as a husband, wife, brother, sister, mother, father, son, daughter or stepchild.

The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of tuition fee for the first attempt at units or courses in the program of study (i.e. a certificate, diploma, University Transfer Program (UTP), bachelor’s degree, pre-master’s program, postgraduate qualifying program or master’s degree)† with a Navitas member institution (excluding the Mixed English option).‡ This amount is credited to the eligible student’s tuition fee account each academic term, with the amount being relevant to the number of units undertaken in that term. The bursary does not apply to additional units or repeat units that may also be undertaken.

A completed application must be submitted to the Navitas institution where the second family member is studying, together with supporting documents such as a birth certificate or family card.^ Application forms can be obtained from the Navitas institution where the student has enrolled.

* The Navitas family bursary applies to students studying at ACN, Curtin College, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore, CRIC, EIBT, EIC, Eynesbury, FIC, HIBT, ICM, ICP, ICRGU, ICWS, La Trobe Melbourne, LIBT, Macquarie City Campus, MIBT, MIBT Indonesia, PDIC, PIBT, QIBT, SAIBT, SIBT, Navitas at UMass Boston, Navitas at UMass Dartmouth, Navitas at UMass Lowell, Navitas at WKU and Navitas at UNH only.

† Certificate programs may also be known or registered a Foundation Studies, University Transfer Program Stage I or University Pathway Program Stage I. Diploma programs may also be known or registered as Undergraduate Pathway, University Transfer Program Stage II or University Pathway Program Stage II.

‡ The Navitas bursary is not applicable to any English language program or any component of an English language program offered by a Navitas member institution.

^ The supporting documentation that is required will depend on the country where the student is enrolled.

Navitas academic merit scholarshipsNavitas is committed to helping students achieve their career goals by offering scholarships to outstanding students.+

Navitas academic merit scholarships are awarded each term by each Navitas pathway college or managed campus. Two students with the highest GPA in four or more subjects or courses will each receive a scholarship.

The scholarships cover: • one academic term or part thereof at a

Navitas member institution (equivalent to the tuition fees for a maximum of up to five academic subjects or courses) for:

- a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (Australia)

- UTP Stage II or associate degree (Canada)

- UPP or IUTP (United States) - undergraduate pathway program

(United Kingdom); or

• one semester of undergraduate study at ACN, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore or Macquarie city campus; or

• one semester of a master’s program at Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore or Macquarie city campus.

The scholarships are applied to the tuition for the second term of enrolment only or the final semester of study in an undergraduate or postgraduate program. Students must be enrolled as a full time student to qualify for the scholarships.

The scholarship panel from each Navitas member institution will announce the recipients of the Navitas academic merit scholarships upon the completion of each term and the release of the results. The recipients will be notified by mail and the successful students posted on the college website by consent. Students are not required to apply for the scholarship, as it is awarded based on academic performance and all students are eligible.

Scholarship policy

1. Two scholarships for one academic term’s tuition are offered at all Navitas member institutions each term, effective from:

- United States: Term 2 intake, 2011 (May)

- United Kingdom: Term 2 intake, 2011 (June)

- Australia and Singapore: Term 2 intake, 2011 (July)

- Canada: Term 1 intake, 2011 (September)

2. Where the Academic Assessment Committee must differentiate between equally qualified applicants, additional factors such as educational disadvantage, membership of a specific equity group and/or significantly adverse personal circumstances may be taken into account.

3. Students are eligible to qualify for the scholarships after successful completion of their first term and after commencing their second term.

4. Students can only be awarded the scholarship once.

5. Students already in receipt of a scholarship may not be eligible for the Navitas scholarship.

6. Students are required to pay for any additional courses or subjects or courses undertaken that are over the amount covered by the scholarship.

+ Navitas academic merit scholarships are offered to students studying at ACN, Curtin College, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore, CRIC, EIBT, EIC, Eynesbury, FIC, HIBT, ICM, ICP, ICRGU, ICWS, La Trobe Melbourne, LIBT, Macquarie City Campus, MIBT, MIBT Indonesia, PDIC, PIBT, QIBT, SAIBT, SIBT, Navitas at UMass Boston, Navitas at UMass Dartmouth, Navitas at UMass Lowell, Navitas at WKU and Navitas at UNH only.

This information is correct as at 1 January 2011 and subject to change without notice or at the discretion of Navitas member institutions or Navitas Limited.

Your accommodation

At QIBT, we can help you find the right accommodation. You can choose to live on or off campus, in a homestay or with other students in shared accommodation.

On-campus accommodation

Mount Gravatt Residential College

As a QIBT student you may choose to live at the Mount Gravatt Residential College on Griffith’s Mount Gravatt campus, which offers fully catered single rooms with shared amenities. QIBT classes are less than five minutes’ walk from the college and a free shuttle bus service provides convenient transport between the Mount Gravatt and Nathan campuses.

Gold Coast Griffith University Village

As a QIBT student studying on the Gold Coast, you may choose to live in Griffith University Village. These fully furnished apartments offer stylish student living right on the Gold Coast campus. The Village caters for a vibrant community of 517 students and offers everything you need to make the most of your university experience. There is also an exciting residential life program, a range of facilities including a basketball court and pool, and staff on site 24 hours a day.

Share accommodation (off-campus)

In Australia, the most popular type of accommodation for students is share

accommodation. Sharing a house or flat usually involves a small number of people living together in rental accommodation and sharing facilities (such as a kitchen and bathroom) and household costs (including internet, electricity, gas and phone bills).

For most off-campus accommodation, you need to sign a rental lease for three to six months and pay a security deposit (bond), usually equivalent to four weeks’ rent.

Share accommodation can be difficult to arrange from overseas, so we recommend you stay with a host family in a homestay for at least four weeks when you arrive. You can then start to look for share accommodation on notice boards, online, in local newspapers and through word of mouth.

HomestayHomestay is accommodation offered to students by host families who live within commuting distance from the campus. This is a popular option for students looking for a safe and convenient place to stay during their studies. Homestays give students a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture firsthand by participating in the daily household routine. Your homestay provider will take an active interest in you and help

you settle into the new environment. This will make it easier for you to get started with formal study.

Homestay providers are chosen very carefully. Whether your provider is a family with children, a couple or a single person, your homestay experience should be a rich and rewarding one.

The length of your homestay can vary from a minimum of four weeks to the full length of your program. Homestay can be ideal for students who want to look for permanent accommodation after they arrive in Australia, without having to worry about organising meals or signing a long-term lease straight away. This allows you to concentrate on your studies.

Students are welcomed as part of the household and are given:

• a warm, caring and safe place to live

• a private, furnished bedroom

• English language guidance and support

• help with public transport

• nutritious meals

Please note: If you are an international student under 18 years of age and are not under the care of a government-approved carer, you must stay in homestay accommodation until you turn 18.

For more information, contact [email protected] or visit qibt.qld.edu.au/accommodation.

When you arrive at QIBT, you can meet with an academic advisor to discuss how we can make your time here as positive and enjoyable as possible.

Student activitiesTaking part in a range of extracurricular activities is an important part of student life. At QIBT, we actively encourage you to enjoy time away from your studies and have fun by participating in extracurricular activities to make new friends, improve your skills and broaden your outlook.

Griffith University Campus Life organises various events and activities throughout the year, including social sport matches, free movie nights and lunchtime events such as table tennis competitions.

Student Liaison CommitteeThe Student Liaison Committee (SLC) gives staff and students an opportunity to meet and discuss issues that affect them. The committee consists of academic and administrative staff and students from each of the programs.

Many SLC initiatives have already improved the quality of life for many students, and participation is greatly encouraged as a way for you to gain valuable meeting and public-speaking skills.

Campus securitySecurity is provided on all Griffith University campuses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Located around the campus are telephones for contacting Campus Security, who can arrange an escort to take you to your vehicle or on-campus accommodation, particularly on weekends or after dark.

Transition to Griffith UniversityEach semester, QIBT organises information sessions for students progressing from their QIBT program to their degree program at Griffith University. These sessions are presented by university staff who provide information about admissions, programs and transition. Every year, we also hold a graduation ceremony for students who successfully complete their Tertiary Preparation, diploma and degree programs at QIBT.

International student visas

Do I need a student visa? All international students must possess a current student visa while they are studying in Australia. This information does not apply to prospective students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

One visa for all your studiesAs a QIBT student, you can apply for a single visa to cover the duration of your studies. Under this visa you can package your QIBT program, your degree at Griffith University and your English language program (if required).

How do I apply? Prospective international students intending to study in Australia must obtain a student visa from an Australian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in their home country before travelling. Some students can also apply online: to find out if you are eligible, visit immi.gov.au/e_visa/students.htm.

All international students must comply with current visa conditions and regulations determined by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

QIBT will be glad to help you with any questions in relation to your visa application. Email us [email protected] or contact one of our representatives in your home country. For a list of authorised QIBT representatives, visit qibt.qld.edu.au and follow the link to ‘How to apply: International agents’.

What are the visa requirements? There are requirements that must be met before a student visa is issued, and these vary from country to country. The main requirements for a visa application may include:

• a letter of offer from QIBT

• an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from QIBT, which is issued after you have paid your tuition and other required fees

• a medical check-up

• proof of academic history and English proficiency

• proof of financial support

Note: Students from Assessment Level 3 and 4 countries will need to undertake a pre-visa assessment from an Australian Embassy or High Commission before making any payments to QIBT. DO NOT make any payments until your pre-visa assessment has been approved.

What are the visa conditions? To maintain your visa, you must:

• study full time while in Australia

• attend at least 80 percent of all scheduled classes

• maintain satisfactory academic progress

• maintain a valid enrolment at QIBT and inform QIBT if you change your student status

• advise QIBT within seven days if you change your Australian address

• have enough money to cover tuition fees and living expenses while in Australia

• not work more than 20 hours a week during a semester (see below)

• maintain valid Overseas Student Health Cover (see below)

• not transfer between registered education providers within the first six months of the starting date of your program, without a release letter

For more information about visa conditions and regulations, visit immi.gov.au/students.

Do I need health cover? As a condition of your student visa, you must maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) while in Australia. You must obtain this cover for the proposed duration of your visa. If you have an accident or health problem within Australia, you will be able to redeem some or all of your medical costs.

QIBT can organise OSHC on your behalf. Further details will be provided in your letter of offer. For more information, visit oshcworldcare.com.au.

How long is my visa valid? Your student visa will be issued for the duration of your QIBT program, as stated in the CoE that you will receive from QIBT. If

you plan to continue your studies at Griffith University, you may package your QIBT and Griffith University programs together and receive a CoE for both.

The advantage of this is that you will receive one visa for the entire duration of your studies at QIBT and Griffith University. With your letter of offer, you will receive an Acceptance of Offer form. You should indicate on this form whether you require a CoE just for QIBT or for both QIBT and Griffith University.

Please note: If your QIBT program finishes in September and your university program starts in February of the following year, Australian immigration law may require you to leave Australia between October and February. QIBT takes no responsibility for students who fail to take this into consideration when selecting their program courses.

How do I renew my visa? It is the student’s responsibility to renew or extend their visa as required, before it expires. You must present specific documents when applying for a student visa extension or renewal. A checklist and the required forms are available at studyinaustralia.gov.au.

Can I work in Australia while on a student visa? If you are an international student currently enrolled and attending classes, you may work up to 20 hours per week while your program is in session, and full-time hours during scheduled breaks. However, you should not rely on part-time work to support your study, as the amount you earn will be unlikely to cover all your living costs. Please be aware that your primary purpose in Australia while on a student visa is to study, and that any work you undertake must not interfere with your studies.

What if I have dependants? If you are a prospective international student and you have any school-aged dependants coming to Australia with you, you must pay full fees for each dependant who is to be enrolled in a government or non-government school.

The provision of education to international students is regulated by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) through the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislative framework. An overview of this framework, including the rights and responsibilities of international students, is available at aei.gov.au/aei/esos.

Policies and procedures

To comply with legislative requirements, QIBT has a number of policies and procedures in place that address academic, financial, welfare, corporate and information technology issues. Full details are available in our policy library at policy.qibt.qld.edu.au.

ESOS ActAustralia has built a reputation for being a safe, progressive and dynamic place to study. The Australian Government maintains this reputation by providing high-quality education and consumer protection, specifically developed for overseas students. The Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and associated regulations set out the legal framework for delivering education to overseas students. More information about the ESOS framework, including the Easy Guide to ESOS, can be found at aei.gov.au/aei/esos.

Privacy ActQIBT is bound by the Australian Privacy Act 1988, which regulates the ways in which private-sector organisations can collect, use or disclose personal information. Information collected before a student begins their studies and over the course of their studies may be made available to state and federal government agencies and the ESOS Assurance Fund Manager to ensure compliance with QIBT’s obligations under the ESOS Act 2000, the ESOS Regulations 2001, the ESOS National Code 2007 and other relevant state and federal legislation.

Code of conductQIBT plays an important role in the lives of students. All students studying at QIBT have the right to be treated with respect and courtesy by QIBT staff and fellow students in an environment that is free from harassment and is conducive to learning.

We expect you to abide by our code of conduct by accepting responsibility for your behaviour, conducting yourself in a professional manner at all times and treating staff and fellow students with respect, honesty and courtesy.

Access and equityQIBT is committed to providing equal opportunities for all students to ensure that no student who has met the specified academic and English language entry requirements is denied access to a program. This policy also ensures that no student at QIBT is disadvantaged.

All QIBT staff, both academic and administrative, are responsible for ensuring that any students with disabilities are treated with dignity and courtesy and given every opportunity to reach their full educational potential.

Complaints or appealsQIBT has policies and procedures in place to deal with student complaints and appeals, quickly and constructively. Independent dispute resolution is available if you feel that a complaint has not been resolved satisfactorily.

Credit exemptions (recognition of prior learning) QIBT may give credit exemptions to students who have completed an equivalent program of study at another recognised educational institution or university. You can apply for an exemption when you submit your application, or within the first week of your program. For more information, see page 34.

Academic performanceQIBT’s Program Progression and Academic Integrity policies outline the required standards for academic performance at QIBT. Visit policy.qibt.qld.edu.au for more information.

Can I apply for credit exemptions? You may apply for credit exemptions (recognition of prior learning) based on equivalent study at another university or educational institution. You can only submit applications for exemptions in your first semester of study; no applications will be accepted in subsequent semesters.

If you are applying for an exemption from a course of study, you must not enrol in that course as your application will not be approved. To apply for an exemption, indicate this on your enrolment application form and submit it together with:

• a completed Credit Transfer Application form (available from the ‘How to Apply’ section at qibt.qld.edu.au)

• certified copies of academic results

• outlines of any relevant courses you have completed

Please note: Exemptions for Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program are granted by QIBT. Exemptions for diploma programs are granted by the dean (or the dean’s nominee) of the relevant faculty at Griffith University. A maximum of four exemptions may be granted. Students must enrol and successfully complete an additional four QIBT courses to be awarded Certificate IV or a diploma.

When do I apply for a visa? After QIBT receives your fees, your place in your chosen program of study will be confirmed. An electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) will be sent to you or your agent. You will need to present this to an Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in your home country when applying for a student visa. See page 45 for more information.

Be sure to allow enough time for your visa to be processed before you plan to travel to Australia. You should allow at least six weeks before the program begins, although this time frame may vary from country to country.

Please note: Citizens and residents of some countries may need to undergo a pre-visa assessment through an Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate before any payments can be made to QIBT. This may take an additional four to six weeks.

For further information about the QIBT application process, visit qibt.qld.edu.au and follow the link to ‘How to apply’.

Conditions of enrolment and refund policy

Conditions of enrolment1. The student is expected to attend all classes,

undertake all assessments and examinations during a program, and abide by the rules and regulations of QIBT that are in force at any time.

2. The contract between the applicant and QIBT is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Australia and the State of Queensland.

3. QIBT may, by written notice, vary the conditions of enrolment as may be necessary to comply with any law, regulation or amendment thereof, of the Commonwealth of Australia or the State of Queensland.

4. In the event of circumstances requiring urgent medical care and where it is not possible to contact the parent/guardian, QIBT is authorised as a matter of urgency to seek and provide appropriate medical care.

5. International students must meet the minimum English language requirements for entry to the program. English proficiency will be tested and, if the test reveals insufficient English language skills, the student will be required to Ie a bridging English course in the first semester of study, or to enrol in an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) before beginning their studies — all at the sole discretion of QIBT.

6. Students who are granted permanent residency before the census date for a semester will be charged as a domestic student for that semester, providing they submit documentary evidence of their change of visa status. Students who are granted permanent residency after the census date will be enrolled as a domestic student the following semester, providing they submit documentary evidence of their change of visa status. The census date for each semester is the end of Week 4 of the semester.

Refund policy

OverviewOnce an applicant accepts a place offered by QIBT and pays fees, or submits a Request for FEE-HELP, a binding contract is created between the student and QIBT.

A student may cancel their enrolment in a course or program at any point in time. Depending on the timing of that request a student may be subject to a cancellation charge as outlined in the tables below. For the purposes of this policy, cancellation charges for withdrawal from program will be based on semester fees which are defined as one full-time semester of study in any program at QIBT (40 credit points).

Notification of withdrawal from a program must be made in writing to QIBT via submission of a Leave of Absence form or a Withdrawal from Program form, completed in consultation with the appropriate QIBT staff member outlined on the form. Notification of withdrawal from a course must be made in writing to QIBT via submission of a Change of Enrolment form and should be done so in conjunction with the program coordinator. QIBT defines a Course as a single subject of study which is completed in one semester. A Program is comprised of a number of courses which make up a qualification (e.g. Diploma or Certificate).

No refunds are given for tuition fees unless the student has completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their program. Any overpayment of fees will remain credited towards a student’s account and applied against charges in a subsequent semester.

Timing of RefundsA student who believes they are entitled to a refund of fees must complete a Request for Refund Form. Where a student is entitled to a refund of fees under this policy, the refund will be paid within four (4) weeks of receiving the Request for Refund

Form. Refunds will be paid in Australian dollars, unless payment in that currency is impracticable. Refunds will be paid to the person who enters into the contract with QIBT (normally the student), unless the person gives a written direction to QIBT to pay the refund to another person.

International Students and all Certificate StudentsFor the purposes of calculating cancellation charges relating to this section of the policy, an International student is defined as one who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of a permanent residency visa. Any student undertaking Certificate level programs is also subject to these cancellation charges.

Where a student’s visa renewal is rejected due to a breach in visa conditions subsequent to them commencing studies at QIBT, the student must withdraw from QIBT and the cancellation fee will be calculated as shown in the table following.

A student who fails to meet the entry requirements for their program and who is therefore forced to withdraw, will be charged an administration fee of $500.

An international or certificate student who withdraws from a course(s) prior to the census date for that semester will not be liable for tuition fees for that course(s). The census date for each semester is the end of week four of the semester. Where a student requests withdrawal from a course(s) after the end of week four of the semester, cancellation charges will be calculated as shown in the table following.

An international or certificate student who withdraws from a program prior to the commencement of classes, or after the commencement of classes will be subject to cancellation charges calculated as outlined in the table following.

Notification Cancellation fee Withdrawal from program

Weeks 1 to 4 70% of semester fees (plus A$500 administration fee)

After week 4 100% of semester program fee

Please note: An academic penalty will be applied for withdrawal after Week 10. A “Withdrawal with Failure” grade will be applied to the course. The QIBT Assessment Policy and the QIBT Finalisation of Results policy give more detail about this.

Other ConditionsQIBT reserves the right to withdraw a program or course(s) from offer at its discretion. If a student is unable to enrol in a similar program or course(s) at QIBT and the enrolment is cancelled, all fees will be refunded. In the event of default by QIBT as the provider, the provisions of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000, Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Regulations 2001 and the

Higher Education Support Act (HESA) 2003 will apply. Students who dispute QIBT’s decision regarding a refund can lodge an appeal under the Student Complaints and Appeals Policy to have the decision reviewed. This agreement, and the availability of complaints and appeals processes, does not remove the right of the student to take action under Australia’s consumer protection laws.

All refunds are paid in Australian dollars. Where it is necessary for QIBT to convert the refund into a currency other than Australian dollars in order for the payment to be made, it will be converted using the exchange rate on the date the payment is made. QIBT will not be responsible for fluctuations in exchange rates.

A student whose enrolment is terminated by QIBT during the course of a semester as a result of seriously breaching QIBT rules will not be entitled to any refund of fees with respect to that semester.

A student whose enrolment is terminated at the end of a semester will be charged a cancellation fee of $500.

A student who fails to re-enrol in a semester by the last day to enrol will be deemed to have withdrawn from their program. Cancellation charges will be applied and effective from that date.
