The Need for GRIN-Global
Many national genebanks lack effective information technology for documenting & managing collections electronically
Why Switch From GRIN?Genebanks interested in adopting GRIN were challenged by software licensing fees
GRIN…GRIN-Global
In 2008, the Global Crop Diversity Trust awarded ARS a 3-year, $1.4 million grant to address global germplasm information management needs
GRIN…GRIN-Global
USDA/ARS is devoting more than $1 million of in-kind support to the project
Bioversity International will support the deployment of GRIN-Global internationally
GRIN-Global Project Mission
Create…a new, scalable version of GRIN …powerful,
flexible, easy-to-use PGR information management system
an effective global network of genebanks
Encourage… the use of PGR resources by researchers,
breeders, and farmers (producers)
Customer Input
• Public Bulletin Board for 18 months
• Fall 2009 survey – 444 surveys completed by international and U.S.
respondents– Sent more than 600 U.S. CGC email invitations
• Feedback from presentations
