DEAR READERS!
Networked production, machine learning in the pro-duction process, intelligent workpieces: What exactly do all the current buzzwords mean? And above all, how suitable are they for everyday application? This is what we want to discuss at the 4th Grinding Symposium in Thun, to which you are cordially invited.
In lectures internationally renowned experts will explain topics from the grinding machine sector and the manu-facturing industry. In technology presentations experts from the brands of the UNITED GRINDING Group will present the companies’ latest hardware and software solutions. And in the new FutureLAB we will present innovative technologies of tomorrow.
“United for your Success”: This is the motto of the Symposium – because, as with all the Group’s actions, once again the benefit for our customers is our benchmark.
So come and be inspired. I look forward to welcoming you in Thun in May 2019.

THE FUTURE OF PRODUCTION
How is digitalization changing machine manufacturing? And which innovations are there in grinding technology?
Lectures on these issues will invite discussion at the Grinding Symposium
Do humans still operate machines or have machines long controlled us, without us noticing? And how
is digitalization changing the interface between human and machine? Dr. David Bosshart from Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute for Economic and Social Stud-ies will kick off the range of specialist colloquia with a lecture on this topic and draw a big picture of the modern working world.
Lectures are traditionally an inte-gral part of the Grinding Symposium. Many renowned social, economic, dig-italization and machine manufacturing experts have already spoken here. The Symposium participants can expect to hear top-level speakers once again this year.
SENSORS IN THE PRODUCTION PROCESSThe lectures, divided into four specialist colloquia, will deal with general produc-tion topics and with specific aspects of the various grinding technologies. Claus Ahrens from Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions, for instance, will talk about the use of MEM sensors. MEM are Micro Electrical Mechani-cal Sensors, which process both mechanical and electronic impulses. The best-known ap-
plication is the detection of a vertical or horizontal condition, as when a smartphone is rotated. Which advan-tages these sensors have in production processes will be explained by Ahrens at the Symposium in Thun.
“The factory of the future will be far more flexible”, predicts Dr. Sebastian Risi, who deals with artificial intelli-gence (AI) at the IT University of Copen-hagen. “And humans will be integrated in entirely new combinations: Human – machine, human – robot, machine – robot.” At the Symposium Risi will talk about AI in the manufacturing industry.
Eckhard Hohwieler from Fraun-hofer IPK Berlin will devote himself to a related area of artificial intelligence: Machine learning in production. Prof. Konrad Wegener from ETH Zürich will deal specifically with grinding machine technology and ask which visions and developments are con-ceivable for these applications.
You can expect these and other lectures at the 4th Grinding Symposium. The detailed lecture program will be available from the end of 2018 at www.grinding-symposium.com

FutureLAB is dedicated to the theme of
digitalization in production
New machines and software solutions will be presented in theory
and on the machine during the technology presentations In which production tasks can new soft-
ware programs and new machines from the UNITED GRINDING Group support you
even better? And which solutions are relevant for the production of tomorrow and beyond? These two questions will be answered by two of the core elements of the Grinding Sym-posium: the technology presentations and FutureLAB.
TECHNOLOGY PRESENTATIONSAt the stations in the new Hall 6 specialists from the Group will present new software solutions and new machines. These will include at least one world premiere.
What are the specifics? Which concrete machining steps will be-nefit? These questions will be ans-wered knowledgeably and clearly using the example of individual machines, as well as in lectures and presentations. The producti-on specialists from the UNITED GRINDING Group are not only familiar with the machines, they also know the customers’ specific requirements.

FUTURE LABProduction monitoring by an online monitor-ing service, system-specific support by a re-mote service: The UNITED GRINDING Group already offers these services under the Digital Solutions™ label.
Which further digital solutions are con-ceivable in the production environment will be examined in FutureLAB which, on an ar-ea of over 300 square meters, will be part of the Grinding Symposium for the first time. “We can get a glimpse of the machine man-ufacturing of tomorrow in dynamic presenta-tions and interactive processes”, explains Chief Innovation Officer Christoph Plüss.
ALWAYS ON THE PULSE OF TIMENew software and hardware solutions from the Group and the digital production of tomorrow – these can be experienced in the technology presentations and in FutureLAB at the Grinding Symposium

TALKING ABOUT TECHNOLOGY
Concrete innovations in hardware and software, visions of the technologies of tomorrow – that’s one thing. The demands of everyday work in the company are another. Both come together in discussion. Who has experienced what? Who has found which solutions? The love of technology, the fascination of new processes and, yes - also the pride and enthusiasm for ideas which people have produced and know-how which people have developed: These are what make talking about technology so exciting. The Grinding Symposium offers a forum for this.

THUN
The panorama of the Bernese Alpsforms the impressive backdrop of the Grinding Symposium
THE WORLD OF GRINDING MEETS IN THUNSpectacular Alpine panoramas and a mountain lake: It is also the unusual location for a technology conference, which makes the Grinding Symposium so exciting
T his has been a holiday destination for over 150 years, and more than 4500 companies are established here: Thun
is both a business center and a tourist loca-tion – and thus ideally suited for the Grinding Symposium, with its special combination of knowledge exchange and a beautiful environ-ment. The Symposium will be held at Thun-Ex-po for the fourth time. The Exhibition Center has been extended and with the newly built Hall 6 now offers a great place for technology presentations, with room for an audience of 70 in each presentation. Many other places at Thun-Expo – cafeterias, lounges etc. – also in-vite one to linger and talk. Because of course this is what the Grinding Symposium should also be: a place for people to meet.
