Ground engineering is a fundamentalcomponent of all civil engineering projects, forming the backbone of projects invarious industries ranging from transportto mining, buildings, energy, water andconstruction. For any project to besuccessful, ground risk needs to beadequately dened and appropriate
strategies developed to manage risks.
Aurecon works with clients around theglobe to deliver innovative and reliableground engineering solutions that formthe foundation for successful projects.Through this diverse experience, we havebecome market leaders in geotechnicalinvestigations, foundation design, hydrogeological studies, numericalmodelling, soft ground and hard rocktunnels, tunnel linings, groundimprovement, cut and cover structures, micro tunnelling, lateral support andretaining systems.
The strength of our ground engineeringcapability is our people. Ourmultidisciplinary teams are handpickedfor each project, integrating theirexpertise across geotechnical, geological, hydrogeological, materials and pavement, tunnelling and civil engineering disciplines.
Accountability is central to our clientpromise. Aurecon integrates and alignsour specialised teams with our clientsexpectations to deliver best practice forproject outcomes across safety, risk, quality, budget and schedule.
Ground engineering carries inherentsafety risks across all project stages,
ranging from eld investigation throughto the development of safe designs toconstruction and temporary works. We donot compromise on Health & Safety at anyproject stage. It comes rst in everything
we do and is core to how we conduct ourbusiness at Aurecon. We foster this byappointing experienced teams and utilisingour in-house Health & Safety specialistswho combine a deep understanding of themanagement of Health & Safety with thatof our clients.
The unique blend of our technical expertiseand broad industry experience allows ourteams to work closely with our clients, developing open, knowledge sharingrelationships with them. From our work onhydropower projects in Laos, to nationaltransport links in South Africa and majorexport terminals in Australia, our groundengineering teams offer localisedknowledge of the 80 plus countries inwhich we have worked.
Ground engineering relates to the provision ofcompletesolutions for ground related infrastructure, rangingfrom ground investigation through to laboratory testing, design of underground infrastructure and provision ofspecialist construction supervision.

Post earthquake reconstruction services
New ZealandClient Christchurch Earthquake RecoveryAuthority (CERA)
Having assisted in the crisis response efforts
immediately following the earthquake in
February 2011, Aurecon is closely involved
in several initiatives to rebuild Christchurch.
The aim of all reconstruction efforts is very
much about the people as well as the built
environment, allowing for the creation of
places and infrastructure that help rebuild
the resilience of the community. The
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority
(CERA) is a new government department
overseeing the rebuild of Canterbury.
Aurecon staff is seconded to CERA in key
advisory roles.
An Aurecon ground engineering team is
part of the Stronger Christchurch
Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT), tasked
with the rebuild of infrastructure such
as roads, pipes, sewerage and retaining
walls. Aurecon teams are also providing
vital reconstruction services for ongoing
demolition and geotechnical work, and
developing options for energy, light rail and
land development opportunities includingproject management, urban design,
geographic information systems, water and
civil engineering, planning, spatial surveying,
ground engineering and legal surveying.
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link
South AfricaClient Gauteng Provincial Government
Consortium Bombela Construction JV
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state ofthe art dedicated rapid rail line betweenJohannesburg, Pretoria and OR TamboInternational Airport, a fast growing regionwith increasing pressure on existingtransportation infrastructure.
A major engineering challenge of theproject was posed by the groundconditions, where the route traverses an
area of dolomite rock formations notoriousfor sink holes. Aurecons ground engineers, working closely with our client, developed apylon footing and ground improvementprocess that would limit the occurrence ofsinkholes in close proximity to foundations. This philosophy of applying rational designand risk assessment to overcomepreviously undevelopable dolomitic areasis now being incorporated into SouthAfricas national standards for constructionon dolomite ground.
Moatize Coal Project
MozambiqueClientVale
Aurecon developed the detail design forthe railway line, connecting the newlydeveloped Moatize Mine with theproposed Nacala-a-Velha Port. Thecomplex project entails the design offoundations for 62 bridges, slope stabilitydesigns for 300 deep cuts, 338 high lls
and identifying 67 borrow pits along theroute. To inform the design, more than7 000 metres of core drilling wasconducted, 2 600 test pits excavated,50 ReMi tests done, 14 000 metres ofseismic refraction completed and in excessof 14 000 laboratory tests undertaken.
Apart from the logistical challenge ofworking on a 925 kilometre long site, before the start of ground investigations,24.4 million square meters of land had tobe demined of explosives from the recentcivil war.
The Nacala Corridor Project showcasesAurecons ability to conduct innovativeground engineering design in complexsituations and amid signicant logistical
challenges, without compromising safety, quality, budget and the programme.
Global success stories
Our expertise and industry knowledge have beenbuilt on projects around the globe, allowing our
teams to develop detailed localised knowledgeof the 80 plus countries in which we have worked.

Newcastle Coal Export TerminalProject Stage 1 (above image)
AustraliaClient Newcastle Infrastructure Group
Aurecon, in joint venture with Hatch, provided full EPCM services for this Phase 1development, which has been specically
designed for staged expansion from30 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to
66 Mtpa, with further expansions possible. The USD 1 billion project was delivered sixweeks ahead of schedule and within budget.
The site posed many geotechnical challenges
stemming back to the historical formation of
Kooragang Island from a number of smallerislands in the Hunter River estuary. The site was also used as a contaminatedwaste dumping ground from 1960 to 1990.These issues posed complex managementchallenges including ensuring new worksdid not contaminate the ground water andlimiting the impacts of settlement associated
with major structures, coal stockpiles andlarge mobile machinery. Consequently, considerable ground improvement had tobe designed and implemented prior toconstruction, techniques includingsurcharging, dynamic replacement anddeep soil mixing were designed to limit post
construction settlements to tolerable levels.

Gateway Upgrade Project
AustraliaClient Department of Main Roads
The Gateway Upgrade Project involved therefurbishment of the existing bridge andthe construction of a second, including adedicated pedestrian and cycleway, therst of its kind in the world. The project
included 12 kilometres of widening of
existing dual carriageway and sevenkilometres of a new six lane carriagewayacross derelict and swampy ood plains.
The contractors, Leighton Abigroup JointVenture (LAJV) produced design packagesfor all elements of the project, which hadto be both internally and externallyveried. Aurecon assisted the Department
of Main Roads in the external designverication process.
The range of loading and ground conditionsmeant that a variety of solutions wereneeded to achieve the required
performance criteria. Aurecons review ofthe design demanded a wide range oftechnical uency of design process.
