(A Health Nutrition Activity)

Grade Level/Levels: Pre-K- Third GradeNumber of Participants Required: UnlimitedMaterials/Equipment Needed: None

Activity: Coach Fletcher will teach the students about proper nutrition. Hewill emphasize eating healthy fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and grains aspart of a balanced diet. After the students have grasped the differencebetween healthy and unhealthy foods, the class will play “Coach FletcherSays,” modeled after Simon Says. When Coach Fletcher calls out a healthyfood, the students will perform the exercise he suggests. When Coach Fletcher callsout an unhealthy food, they will not perform the exercise he suggests. Any studentsthat choose the wrong food will be out of the game and will sit quietly in their spot.

Examples: “If broccoli is good for you, run in place.” (students would run in place)“If chocolate cake is nutritious, do five jumping jacks.” (students would not move)

Grade Level/Levels: 3rd-5th GradesNumber of Participants: One or more classroomsMaterials Needed: Map of Alabama, pedometers, classroom chart,Pushpins

Activity: Coach Fletcher’s classroom will learn about different cities andcounties in the State of Alabama by virtually walking through them. Eachchild will be given a pedometer at the start of the class period to record theirsteps. At the end of the class period, each student will record his or hersteps for the day beside his or her name on the classroom chart. This will bea month long exercise where we try to make it from Hartselle, Alabama, tothe sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast. We will tally our steps on Friday ofeach week, mark our progress on the map, and discuss interesting factsabout the cities and counties we have “traveled” through. If we reach ourgoal by the end of the month, we will have a beach themed party tocelebrate.

MUSICAL TRAFFIC SAFETY SQUARES

Directions: There will be laminated squares of paper in

the colors red, yellow, and green placed on the floor (in random order) in a square shape around the outside of the students’ desks.

The teacher will display the poster of the traffic signal and explain that red means stop, yellow means go slow, and green means go.

The music will play and the children will walk around the room in a clockwise motion and will step on each consecutive square.

When the music stops she will hold the poster of the stop sign. The child must stop on the square they are on.

If their color is red, they will freeze and stand very still. If the child stops on yellow, they will walk in place slowly. If the child stops on a green square, they will jog in place on the square.

When the stop sign goes down, the music will start again and the children will walk around the room stepping on the squares.

The game will repeat in the same manner.

Grade Level: 1st or 2nd

Participants Needed: Any amount of

students as long as enough squares are printed and laminated for all students to have one to stand on.

Materials Needed: Laminated squares of

colored paper (red, yellow, and green)

CD player with CD of children’s songs

SHOPPING FOR HEALTHY SNACKS

Directions: The teacher will give each group one

basket, one clipboard with a pencil, and one shopping list.

Students will walk around the room choosing the correct amount of healthy snacks for the colors on their shopping list. They will make a check mark in the box next to the color of the snack that they choose. (See example shopping list)

When students have completed their shopping, they will bring their items to the “check-out” at the teacher’s desk.

The students will count each color individually and then will count all the items in their basket. As they take items out of the basket, they must name the fruit, vegetable, or other healthy snack.

Students will choose one food item and one juice that are in the room to eat for snack this day.

Grade Level: Kindergarten-1st

Participants Needed: Students will be paired into

groups of 2 Materials Needed:

One basket for each group of children.

One pencil and small clipboard for each group

Bowls of healthy snacks placed throughout the room. Snacks should be individually wrapped or placed in a zip-lock bag for sanitary reasons. These should be a variety of colors (Examples: red and green apples, green grapes, yellow bananas, oranges, red cherries, brown graham crackers, boxes of orange juice, boxes of yellow lemonade etc…)

GAME OF CHANCE Directions: Each group will have one die and two drawstring bags.

One drawstring bag will have a physical activity (Number 1) and the other will have a spelling challenge (Number 2).

Each group will consist of three people. One will hold the physical activity bag, one will have the reading challenge bag, and the other will have the die and will complete the challenge.

The child with the die will roll it. The child will have to complete that number of challenges.

Each challenge will consist of the other children in the group drawing a physical activity and a reading challenge. These children will read the card to the child completing the activity. (Example: “If hop on one foot” was drawn along with “Spell your first name”, the child would have to hop on one foot while spelling their first name)

After the child has completed their number of challenges (according to the roll of the die), the students will switch places in order. Place number 1 will be the physical activity bag, place number 2 will be the reading challenge bag, and place 3 will be the child completing the activity.

The game will continue in this manner: child 1 moves to position 2, child 2 moves to position 3, and child 3 moves to position 1.

Grade Level: 1st grade and up

Participants Needed: Students will be arranged

into groups of 3 Materials Needed:

2 cloth drawstring bags for each group painted with a number 1 or a number 2

Laminated index cards cut in half: some will have activities (do jumping jacks, jog in place, do toe touches, etc…) and the other will have spelling challenges (words from spelling list, high frequency words, child’s whole name, parent’s name, or sibling’s name.)

Grade level: 2nd grade and upNumber of Participants: Divide into 3 or 4 groups Materials/Equipment: Each group needs 1 miniature trampolineEach group needs a stack of note cards with descriptions of the jumping methodDescription:

Each group will stand in a straight line with the trampoline out in front of them.

The first person in line will read a note card with the description of how to jump on the trampoline (ex. Right leg, left leg, facing backwards, arms on head)

While one person from each group is jumping according to individual directions, the teacher will ask a question about health safety

The child who correctly answers the question first returns to their group at the end of the line.

The 2nd person (now standing 1st in line) will read their individual method of jumping and go to the trampoline.

The 1st child from the other groups remains jumping for the next question and does not return to their group until they are the first person to correctly answer a question.

The goal is for a group to have each person in their complete the question first and return.

MILK-O (Health/Nutrition)Bonnie Howard

Grade Level/Levels: Kindergarten-1st grade Number of participants required: 1-20 Materials/Equipment needed: Large room or outside area, MILK-O song lyrics  The purpose of this activity is to introduce the Kindergarten through First grade students to the

health benefits of drinking milk. The students will stand next to their desks or in a room or area with enough room between

students so that they will not touch one another during the song. The students will sing the song and use their arms to make the letters of the word MILK-O. The

song is sung to the tune of BINGO. The “O” is emphasized at the end of the word milk as an element of surprise like “oh” and not as

a part of the spelling of the word. Song: There is a drink that’s good for you and milk is its name O

M-I-L-K-O, M-I-L-K-O, M-I-L-K-O and Milk is its name O It’s in yogurt, cheese and some sweet treats and milk is its name O

M-I-L-K-O, M-I-L-K-O, M-I-L-K-O and Milk is its name OIt has calcium to grow strong bones and milk is it’s name O

M-I-L-K-O, M-I-L-K-O, M-I-L-K-O and Milk is its name O The students will use their arms to create the letters of the song. See picture above. Modified from : Goolsby, Cheryl; “M-I-L-K-O”, Educators Journey Into Nutrition Education;

Hula School-A (Science)Bonnie Howard

Grade Level: 3rd -6th grade Number of participants required: 15-20 Materials/Equipment Needed: 1 hula hoop, music player (optional), study questions  The purpose of the activity is to reinforce science knowledge to prepare for assessment. The students will hold hands and create a large circle. Two of the students will unlock hands long enough for the hula hoop to be placed between them. The students will then re-lock hands. When the instructor says “go” (or the music starts-optional), the students will begin to pass the

hula hoop over their bodies without unlocking hands. When the instructor says “stop” (or the music stops), the student who has the hula on their

body must successfully answer a science question. If the student fails to correctly answer the question, the student must leave the circle and

observe quietly while the game continues. The remaining students will re-lock hands and continue play. Play continues until only one student remains.   Modifications: This game could be modified to incorporate all content areas. For example, the

students could be asked to spell a word correctly to reinforce spelling content or they could provide the correct answer to a math problem, etc.

Parachute Math (Math)Bonnie Howard

Grade Level: 3rd -4th grade Number of Participants: 20 Materials/Equipment Needed: Parachute, large room (gymnasium) or outside  The purpose of the activity is to reinforce math skills. Using an old parachute, have the children spread around the chute placing their thumbs under

the chute and their fingers on top. Assign a number 1-10 to each student. There should be two #1’s, two #2’s etc. Ask the students to raise the parachute high above their heads Ask the students to lower the parachute to the ground Instruct the students to raise the parachute high above their heads and listen to the math

equation The students whose numbers correspond with the numerical solution to the math problem will

let go of the parachute and run beneath the parachute switching places with the other student who has the same number.

For instance if the equation is 4 – 2, the students who are assigned to the #2 will run beneath the parachute and switch places with each other.

The game continues until all students have had an opportunity to run beneath the parachute.   Modifications: This is an original idea loosely based on a game I played in Elementary school

where we took turns running beneath the parachute. Reference: Picture from www.netreach.com

Mallory Fallin Grade Levels: 9th -12th Subject: Health and Nutrition Number of Participants: Three teams of 4, 1 score keeper (13 total) Materials Needed: Colored 5x7 blank note cards, 16 baskets or buckets,

Velcro, 3 Huge Pieces of Poster Board, Markers, Tennis Shoes Instructions: Students will have three Huge Charts set up on one side of

the class room. (The set up of the chart is shown at the bottom of the page) The children will look up the daily recommendations for a healthy diet for example: How many proteins, carbohydrates, or fats are recommended for daily intake. At the other end of the room there will be 4 buckets in front of each team labeled: Carbohydrates, Fats, Protein, and Calories. In the buckets, there are colored note cards with different types of food and percent number of each food source. On the other side of the card is Velcro to stick on the chart. When the score keeper says “Go” the first participant sprints down to the first bucket. The first player starts at Carbohydrates, they go through the bucket until they find the right number to add under the Carbohydrates section of the chart. Once they find it they run back down to the chart and stick there note card on their chart. As soon as they are done, the next player runs down the next bucket and does the same thing, continue this, until all of your players go to a bucket and whoever completes there chart first wins!!!!

Page 25: Group 3 integration power point slideshow

Safe or Unsafe Mallory Fallin Subject: Health Safety Grade Levels: 7th-9th grade Number of Participants: Two teams of 8, and 1 score keeper (17 total) Materials Needed: Pictures of Safe Behavior and Unsafe Behavior (Examples:

Safe Behavior: Jogging, Laughing, Bike-Riding, etc. Unsafe Behavior: Smoking, Drinking, etc.),Screen or blank wall and projector, Room with space to do jumping jacks, and jogging.

Instructions: Students separate into teams. One player from each team will go first, while the

other teams wait behind them in a single file line, for there turn. A picture will be shown to the participants of Safe and Unsafe Behavior, in order for the student to answer whether the picture is a Safe or Unsafe behavior they have to do a jumping jack. Who ever does the jumping jack first will answer the question. In order to earn a point for your team you have to name whether it is a Safe or Unsafe behavior, and ways that it is Safe or Unsafe. For example, the picture show Drinking the participant will say “Unsafe, the behavior is unsafe because it is bad for the health of your liver”. Once the player answers the question correctly they jog to the end of the line and wait for there next turn. The first team to ten points wins.

Page 26: Group 3 integration power point slideshow

How You Gonna’ Get There? Mallory Fallin Subject: Geography Grade Levels: 4th-8th Number of Participants: Any number of students can participate. Materials Needed: Poster board, 4 Bicycles, 4 Jump Ropes, Tennis

Shoes, Card Board Box, Construction Paper, Markers, Gym (best location)
