DURATION: Starts February for two yearsSTUDY: Full-time or part-time equivalentLOCATION: Hamilton Gardens Campus

OVERVIEWWhether you want to work as part of a team or individually, indoors or out, studying landscape design with Wintec will provide you with the work skills and job opportunities to start a successful career as a landscape designer or contractor. This two-year programme teaches you the applied skills of landscape design and construction in a purpose-built studio right in the heart of Hamilton Gardens.

HANDS ON TEACHING The Diploma programme has a strong practical emphasis and is largely taught using real-life projects with real clients, such as a local school, kindergarten, parks, community centres lifestyle blocks, residential sections, private courtyards or Marae.

You’ll learn how to construct decking, fences, lay paving, build retaining walls and outdoor fireplaces. You will also go on a variety of field trips, visit local councils and get the opportunity to design and install a landscape space at The Waikato Home and Garden Show. Wintec tutors will often use current projects for their teaching. You also have at least two free days a week to gain work experience and apply the theory you are learning.

Wintec also maintains a close relationship with Landscape New Zealand, who assist in the development of the teaching programme to ensure that what you learn is exactly what the industry is looking for.

USE THE LATEST TECHNOLOGYYou’ll learn to use one of a landscaper’s most productive tools – the computer. YOUR FUTURE IN AGRICULTURE

SO WHAT WOULD I DO ALL DAY?That depends on what direction you decide to take within the agriculture industry.

As a FARMER or FARM MANAGER you’ll plan how to

run the farm, manage pasture, stock and breeding

programmes. You’ll also look after the financial and

farming records, hire and supervise staff, buy feed,

machinery and other materials. You’ll be responsible

for animal welfare, controlling pests and weeds and

maintaining farm buildings, yards and fences.

FARM ASSISTANTS have a hugely varied list of

duties. Depending on whether you work on a sheep/

cattle, dairy or crop farm your day could include

helping the farmer shift stock, operating a farm

machinery, spraying and harvesting crops, milking

cows and rearing calves. You could also be involved

in feeding out, treating animals against parasites,

and maintaining farm machinery and buildings.

As a DAIRY FARMER you’ll be up early most

mornings milking the cows. The rest of your day

could be spent cleaning equipment and the yards

after milking, drenching and tagging animals,

organising the breeding of the herd, carrying out

general maintenance and rearing calves.

You’ll also keep financial records and ensure all farm

vehicles and equipment are maintained in good

working order.

Developing planting schedules and preparing

land for planting with tractors and cultivators

are all part of the job for a CROP FARMER. You’ll

also ensure that the crops are weed and disease

free, have enough water and that the soil is well

fertilised. You’ll be involved in buying farm materials,

transporting grain to silos, supervising contractors

and keeping financial and production records.

As a FENCER your day could include meeting

with customers to discuss their needs, preparing

estimates and buying materials. Your workplace

could be on a farm, vineyard, parkland or residential

property laying out fence lines, digging holes, mixing

concrete and constructing fences using a variety of

materials, such as wire, boards, chain links or posts.

SPRAYING CONTRACTORS spend their days

consulting with clients, inspecting areas that

need spraying, working out what is the best way of

applying the spray, and determining what chemical

is required to do the job safely and cost effectively.

You’ll be responsible for telling neighbouring

properties of your plans, maintaining equipment and

organising staff and outside contractors.

TEACHING FARMING OF THE FUTUREBased at Agresearch’s Tokonui Dairy Research farm, the Agritec Centre takes the latest research and learnings in agriculture and develops teaching materials that allow students to explore and understand an entire farm system. The Centre provides the resources for learning about the science, technologies and complex land and animal management systems that exist on a modern dairy farm.

The country’s first dedicated agritechnology educational centre is the result of a partnership between Wintec, AgResearch, AgITO, Waikato Innovation Park and the Coalition of 21st Century Secondary Schools. It has been built to allow students to experience the latest in agritechnology using innovative learning technologies.

This means our Agritec courses have been developed with input from the latest in dairy research results. You will be learning the newest agritechnologies and how they apply to a modern farm, setting you up to help drive the industry into the future.

THE TOKANUI DAIRY RESEARCH FARMThe Agritec Centre is based at AgResearch’s Tokanui Dairy Research farm. The farm is a modern dairy conversion which currently milks a herd of approximately 800 cows on 300+ hectares. $6.5 million has been invested into this high-technology conversion, it is an impressive and inspiring farm designed to help take the industry forward.

Tokanui operates on a commercially valid model, but also conducts Research and Development into:• Environmental management• Productivity gains• Differentiated milks

The goal of the farm is to create the dairy farm of the future, making it the ideal platform from which to teach tomorrow’s farmers, scientists and industry professionals.
