RANHORNE MEMORIAL TRUST GRANT FUNDS AVAILABLE The Grants Committee of the Ranhorne Memorial Trust Board will be accepting applications until October 15, 2017, to fund projects that reflect and enhance our Church’s mission in this community and beyond. The grant procedure requires that

all applications be reviewed each year. The awarding of a grant one year does not carry over from year to year, nor does funding in one year guarantee funding in future years. Grant requests will NOT be approved for items that would normally be part of the annual church budget. For mission trip applications, priority will be given to church members who have not previously par-ticipated in mission trips. The Trust Board will be selecting among the applications submitted, so all interested parties are encouraged to make their causes known. Applications may be obtained by contacting the Church secretary or on the church website.

Early Service and Praise Choir (8:45 A.M.) The Early Service is a more casual worship service with lively piano music and jubilant hymns. The Praise Choir practices each Thursday evening at 6; we would love to have you join us! We also have a number of other ways you can participate in the early service: you can serve as a greeter to welcome early arrivals, you can help with sound or visual presentations or you can help serve communion. Speak to Pastor Hank

or to Gloria Moore, the Lay Worship Leader for our early service about the different ways you can help on Sundays!

CHOIR NEWS

12

All of the children love the way their preschool looks with all of the new colors. They have been learning the rules of the classroom and adjusting very well.

There are 5 children in the three year old class, and 8 children in the four year old class. They seem to be glad to be back to school and settling into their routines. We are very ex-cited to learn that Mrs. Hart will be back the first of October.

The children are all busy learning the names of their classmates, where their special cubbyholes are, and finding their own hooks for the own personal belongings such as back-packs and jackets. Those may seem like simple tasks, but name recogni-tion is the beginning of the process of learning to read. Before you know it, they not only recognize their names, but also the names of their friends. I am very blessed to be a part of this very early learning pro-cess! Tiffany Ward, Director

last year, it is necessary to RELINK

on an annual basis. Your card can be linked to other schools also, and the proceeds will be divided between the schools.

Farm Fresh has a program called “1-2-3-4 for the Community” which offers

the opportunity to earn free educational equipment for our preschool. From Sep-tember 6, 2017 through May 31, 2018 when you shop at Farm Fresh and/or their Pharmacy, have the cashier scan our school’s key tag to earn points for our school. Contact Tiffany Ward at 757-595-0032 if you would like a Key Tag!

CROP Walk The CROP Walk will be held on Sunday, October 8th.

Registration for the walk begins at 1:15 PM at Grace United

Methodist Church with the walk starting at 2 PM. The ap-

proximately 3 mile walk around the CNU campus represents

the average miles people from developing countries have to

walk every day to get fresh water.

Marty Rogers will be coordinating the walkers from Grace,

so get ready to lace up your walking shoes, open your wal-

lets and let’s step out together in the fight against hunger and

malnutrition, in the world and in our local community! 25%

of money raised will be divided between THRIVE and the

Peninsula Food Bank. In addition, gently used shoes and

canned goods will be collected for THRIVE, at the walk

site. See the bulletin board outside the library for additional

information and registration forms. If you have any

questions, please feel free to call Marty at 254-5952.

OUTREACH

OUTREACH

Operation Christmas Child

This month the congregation has the opportunity to participate in Op-

eration Christmas Child to bring joy to children around the world who

live in circumstances of dire poverty and limited opportunities. Many

of these children have never received a gift of any kind. Operation

Christmas Child is sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, an international,

nondenominational, Christian relief and evangelism organization (for

more information, please see the article in the September newsletter.)

Each person or family who wishes to participate will pick up a special

shoe box (or 2) at church and fill it with simple gifts for a child. The

Outreach Committee will provide everything needed to participate,

including detailed directions for filling it. The directions state: Select

a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed

animal. Fill with other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies.

Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. In-

clude a personal note and photo. A donation of $9.00 is critical to

cover shipping and other project costs. (We are participating in this

project instead of filling Christmas stockings this year.)

In addition to bringing the box and donation to church, the $9.00 do-

nation can also be made online at the Samaritan’s Purse website to re-

ceive a tracking label to follow your box. Attach the label to your

shoebox, and you can use the online Look-Up Tool to find out the

country where your box will be delivered with the message of Christ’s

love. To donate online go to https://www.samaritanspurse.org/

operation-christmas-child/follow-your-box/

16

MONTHLY FOOD DONATIONS:

GOOD SAMARITAN is asking for canned soup (low sodium if you are able) during the month of October. However, all non-perishable food donations are welcomed. Please place them in the bins outside of the

church office or in the lobby/narthex of the large sanctuary.

OUTREACH/Stewardship

DON’T FORGET OUR ON-GOING COLLECTIONS: *Travel-size Toiletries *Coupons for the Good Samaritan Fund *Shoes for THRIVE *School supplies for UMCOR *Used eyeglasses for the Lions Club *The UMW Magazine Collection for the Berkeley Community.

Just drop off your donations at the Outreach Committee Cubbies by the office and in the Narthex. Thank you!

Four week Stewardship Discussion Series

Begins October 1st

John Wesley believed money was important as a way of living out Christian Faith. To Wesley, the task was simple: earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can. In this four week study, pastor and author James Harnish presents Wes-ley's teachings in plain, useful language, suitable for individuals to grapple with and groups to dis-cuss and act upon. Please join Blackie Jackson and Bill McFall in the large fellowship hall at 9:45 am on October 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd as we discuss Harnish's Stewardship Series: Earn. Save. Give. Make sure and get your free copy of the companion book - there is one copy available per family.

THANK YOU

Thank you dear Grace family, for all of your prayers, thoughts and concern for us during my Mom's transition from this life to the next. We truly feel uplifted and surrounded by your love as we both mourn and rejoice over my Mom's death. Peace, Love and Joy to you all! Kim and Chris Rumsey

The Outreach Committee would like to thank the members of the

Grace congregation for their generosity, both of money and time. We

had a very successful flood bucket packing party! Thanks to you,

Pastor Hank was able to drop off 21 flood buckets to go Florida and

Texas to help victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

To the staff and members of Grace: Thank you for the cards and your prayers in the loss of my sister Beverly Johnson. It has meant a lot to me and the rest of my family. It’s hard, but God will be with us during this difficult time. We will get through it as time goes on. Best, Billie Ballard

Thank you for the generous donation of goodies for the teachers and staff!! The basket was absolutely beautiful! We

appreciate your support and look for-ward to partnering throughout the

school year!!

Thank you! Jacky Barber, Principal Riverside Elementary School

TRUSTEES STATUS OF THE CHURCH:

With the expectation of serious weather conditions predicted for our area, your Trustees have

implemented the DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE PLAN for Grace United

Methodist Church. The goal of this disaster response plan is to provide a high-level of self-

sufficiency for Grace UMC without over extending the Church's means. Following a local disas-

ter, there are a number of tough questions to be answered when everything around the Church

may be seriously damaged or destroyed or necessary services are not available. The key is pre-

paredness to save valuable time and reduce frustrations in the days and weeks pre- and post-

disaster. It is hoped that being well prepared will help Grace UMC accomplish this.

A copy of this plan can be sent to you via e-mail from Lisa in the office, or me. A hard copy will

be available to those without a computer if you wish.

Appendix A, page 10 states, IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT GRACE UNITED

METHODIST CHURCH (GUMC) NOT BE USED AS AN EMERGENCY SHELTER.

OTHER ITEMS:

We recently received additional light bulbs to finish replacing bulbs down the hall. Trustee Earl

Gray has been replacing them as he is able. Some bulbs in the Sanctuary will require a lift to

replace them. Trustee Al Abbitt thinks one might be available to us when needed.

Our custodian, Bob Williams, is feeling much better and requested some additional hours. Trus-

tees approved the extra time. We appreciate Bob's hard work for our Church.

Your Trustees are reviewing several cost proposals for the following.

l. Maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning equipment.

2. Office copier.

3. Paint/wrap wood surfaces around preschool and back of Church.

The walls and steps to the preschool area have been painted to a more child-friendly entrance.

Great job Tiffany and the Property Committee.

The hot water heater in the Parsonage failed and had to be replaced at a cost of $710. We have

received an estimate to improve the many cabinets in the kitchen, examining other options to

lower cost. Still working on necessary repairs in the Parsonage, a few have been completed, but

we have more work to do.

National Exterminating has recommended trimming trees and shrubs away from touching the

building and re-caulking exterior windows and doors. The PC will be working on this as they

are able.

Your Trustees would appreciate your prayers, ideas, and thoughts as we strive to meet the

needs and challenges of the Church and Parsonage during 2017.

TREASURER’S NOTES by: Betty S. Hill

Budget Update through September 24, 2017:

Budgeted ~ $200,185 Received ~ $188,538

Balance Owed on Loan ~ $31,995

Now wait a minute! Isn’t Jesus the “Prince of Peace” promised by God in Isaiah 9:6?

How dare He! How could He, of all people, check out of this world, leaving everyone

else behind to suffer through these worsening storms! Why did he leave his followers

behind to clean up after all these storms?

Well that’s not exactly what Jesus did. Sure, his disciples (then and now) should realize

that our earthly life is not free from suffering and trouble. Never has been- never will

be. But Jesus also tells us “you will have peace in me.” That’s the key- peace is found

in our relationship with Jesus, not the circumstances of life. The Greek word for peace

spoken by Jesus has the connotation of an assurance of well-being in the midst of trou-

ble and not the absence or removal of trouble.

Most residents of eastern Virginia have been through at least one hurricane or tropical

storm. I think it was Floyd back in ’99 that best gave me the calm-in-the-eye-of-the-

storm experience. That’s what peace in Christ is like. So as the storms of life buffet us,

let’s all follow the advice of Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be

exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Let’s seek the silence and the

peace offered by the spirit of Christ in every storm.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Hank

The Eye of the Hurricane

I’ve said these things to you so that you will have peace in me. In the world you have

distress. But be encouraged! I have conquered the world.” - John 16:33

Hurricanes in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Earthquakes in Mexico. White Supremacist

rallies in Charlottesville and Texas. Escalating rhetoric between U.S. President Donald

Trump and North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un. Overloaded family schedules.

Surgeries and more surgeries. Overdraft notifications. Disinterested spouses and

wayward children.

Any of these conditions alone can seem like a hurricane roaring through your life,

flattening mind, body, spirit and will.

In John 16, Jesus explains to His very first disciples that he will soon be physically

absent from them. But they are to take heart because His Holy Spirit will come in Jesus’

stead. Jesus clearly warns that they will have much trouble. The hurricanes will not stop

pounding, they will be persecuted and maybe even killed for following Jesus.
