Grundfos CRN Air-Cooled Top
High temperature operation
In industries where pumping of very hot liquids is crucial for a
successful production, it is important that the pumps are able
to deal with these high liquid temperatures. Our clients have
taught us that no shaft seal can tolerate very hot liquid tempera-
tures. Often, productions are put to unexpected standstills due
to the fact that the shaft seal has to be replaced because it has
been exposed to very high temperatures.
Therefore, Grundfos has designed the CRN Air-Cooled Top;
a pump with a standard mechanical shaft seal that can handle
liquid temperatures of up to 180°C and at the same time can
deliver a high pressure. As the name implies, the pump has an
air-cooled top that separates the pumped liquid from the shaft
seal and prevents it from overheating.

Air-cooled Top
The Grundfos CRN Air-Cooled Top is specially designed to han-
dle hot liquids; i.e. 120°C - 180°C. To make sure that the liquid
temperature around the shaft seal does not exceed the level it
can withstand, the pump is fitted with a special air-cooled shaft
seal chamber generating the same insulation effect as the one
of a thermos. To cool the pump, no external cooling is neces-
sary; the ambient temperature is sufficient.
Long lifespan of shaft seal
The lifespan and efficiency of a shaft seal depends on the na-
ture of the pumped liquid and of its temperature. Because of
the CRN Air-Cooled Top pump’s unique construction, the pump
is able to withstand high temperatures over a long period of
time. The pump is available with different rubber qualities spe-
cially designed to cope with excessive wear and to provide long
life under extreme operating conditions.
Reliability above all
The Grundfos CRN Air-Cooled Top pump has been subject to
thoroughly testing among others in boiler feed applications
dealing with hot liquid temperatures. Therefore, the pump is a
highly reliable partner 24 hours a day.

ATEX approved CR pumps
Grundfos CR in hazardous areas
A new European directive, called the ATEX directive, comes into
effect July 2003. The directive, (94/9/EC), deals with electrical,
mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic equipment in areas exposed
to explosive atmosphere. Explosive atmosphere consists of air
and some sort of combustible material such as gas, dust or
vapour. So, to prevent explosions from occurring, and thereby
higher the standard of safety in the risk areas, manufacturers
of this type of equipment have to comply with the basic safety
requirements stated in the new directive.
The safety requirements in the ATEX directive implies that
pumps have to carry a clear indication of which equipment
group and category, they belong to, and in what areas they can
be used. All the pumps in the Grundfos CR ATEX range comply
with the requirements in the directive. The ATEX directive af-
fects a wide range of industries, dealing with the handling of
cereals, animal feed, paper and wood industries that generate
combustible dust. Likewise the directive affects industries that
deal with the handling of chemicals, plastics and petrol, that is
industries that generates explosive gasses.

The ATEX approved CR pumps and motors carry a mark that
shows which explosion category the pumps are designed for,
and thus, in what kind of areas they can be used. The directive
distinguishes between two explosion groups; group I and II.
Whether it is a group I or II pump, depends on the level of danger
of explosion in the area in which the CR pump is installed.

Aggressive or dangerous liquids
In industrial applications that involve toxic, aggressive or even
explosive liquids, leak-free pumping is top priority. Pumps that
leak these kinds of liquids make up a considerable risk for the
environment in which they operate, and for the people working
close to them, and are therefore not safe for that kind of appli-
cations. Years of close cooperation with our customers, have
taught us that the traditional CR shaft seal solution is unsuit-
able for dealing with media like that.
Therefore, Grundfos has developed the CRN Double Shaft
Seal; a 100% leak-free pump. With the CRN Double Shaft Seal,
Grundfos has designed a pump with two shaft seals mounted
in a back-to-back arrangement in a pressurised seal chamber,
that prevents the pump from leaking.

No Leakage
Because of the double shaft seal construction, liquids are pre-
vented from penetrating into the shaft seal’s working environ-
ment and damage it. Evidently, the most important advantage
of this construction is that whether it is a toxic, aggressive or
explosive liquid that the pump is handling, the liquid stays
where it is supposed to - inside the pump.
Safety
The fact that the CRN Double Shaft Seal does not leak, lead to
another advantage that comes with this pump. The working
environment is safe when the risk of leak of toxic or explosive
media is eliminated. Because of the CRN Double Shaft Seal,
people working close to the pumps do not need to fear for their
own safety. No leak, no risk of pollution.
Longer lifespan of shaft seal
With the CRN Double Shaft Seal, the pumped liquid is not in
direct contact with the shaft seal. Especially, in applications
dealing with particles or sticky liquids such as paint, the double
shaft seal is not exposed to excessive wear, and has a longer
lifespan than a traditional shaft seal has.
Sectional drawing
Two tungsten/carbide seal faces make up the double shaft seal mounted in a “back to back” arrangement. The pressure between the two shaft seals is either created by a pressure intensifier or a separate pump, such as e.g. a dosing pump.

CR efficiency 1 motors
High efficiency operation
Today, pumps consume some 20% of the total electric power
used in the industry. In the light of the continuously growing
concern about the environment, the EU has come up with an
agreement, the CEMEP agreement. The aim of the agreement is
to reduce harmful impact on the environment by putting em-
phasize on how to increase savings on electricity at the same
time as making pumps and motors more efficient. Generally,
the CEMEP agreement is considered as the world standard for
high efficiency motors. According to the agreement, motors are
divided into the following three efficiency groups:
– Eff1 - Highest efficiency
– Eff2 - Middle efficiency
– Eff3 - Lowest efficiency
All the pumps in the Grundfos CR range are available with high
efficiency Eff1 motors. Being an environmental responsible com-
pany, Grundfos attach great importance to supply clients with
low energy consuming products that meet the strict demands
stated in the CEMEP agreement.

Advantages and the CR Eff1 motorsHigh efficiency
The division of efficiency into groups is an expression of how a
motor consume a minimum of electrical power while keeping
a high level of performance. The consequence of reducing the
motor’s energy consumption is lower operating costs; clearly a
crucial factor for the manufacturing industry.
Low noise
Normally, the cooling fan is the part of the pump that makes
the most noise. With the Grundfos CR Eff1 motor, less cooling
air is necessary to maintain a stable low motor temperature,
because the efficiency is high. Therefore, the size of the cooling
fan is smaller, and thus do not make much noise.
Higher ambient temperature
Because of the motor’s construction, the temperature of the
Grundfos CR Eff1 motor is quite a bit lower than the one of a
conventional motor. That is why the CR Eff1 motor is suitable for
applications located in areas with ambient temperatures above
40°C. When the CR Eff1 motor is located in areas with ambient
temperatures below 40°C, the Cost of Ownership is reduced
because the temperature of bearings and insulation system are
reduced and their lifespan, thus, longer.
Esaving = Energy savings per year
P2 = Nominal power output – in the example 4.0 kW
Trun = Running time – in the example 2,500 h/year
Pload = Percentage of full load – in the example 90%
ηnew = Efficiency of new motor – in the example Grundfos Eff1
ηold = Efficiency of replaced motor – in the example Grundfos Eff2
Esaving = P2* Pload* trun* (1 / ηold - 1 / ηnew)
Example: Esaving = 4.0* 0.90* 2,500* (1 / 0.86 - 1 / 0.89) = 353 kWh/year

Grundfos LiqTec
Dry running protection
In the industry, the most frequent cause of pump breakdown
is dry running. Not only is dry running a cost-consuming affair,
because production is put to an immediate standstill. In many
cases, it also ruins pump parts such as the shaft seal and the
bearing systems. Over the years, our clients have asked our ad-
vice to prevent dry running from happening.
Therefore, Grundfos has developed the LiqTec; an electronic
anti-dry running sensor. If the LiqTec senses no liquid in the
pump, it stops the pump at once before any damage is done,
reducing the risk of breakdown by 50%.

Easy installation
With LiqTec, Grundfos has made an indispensable device that is
easy to mount on all the pumps in the Grundfos CR range. The
sensor is inserted via the pump head, close to the shaft seal.
Once the electronic sensor LiqTec is plugged in, the power is
turned on and the control unit monitors the whole system.
Automatic restart
The LiqTec sends heat impulses through a sensor and measures
the temperature of the sensor. If the sensor does not detect
liquid in the pump, the pump is stopped. When the sensor
detects liquid in the pump again, the pump is restarted either
manually or automatically.
Like a PTC relay
The Grundfos LiqTec can also be connected to the pump’s ther-
mistor. The thermistor disconnects the circuit if the motor’s
temperature exceeds a certain level preventing it from over-
heating.

Grundfos CRN Low NPSH
High temperature - poor inlet conditions
In industrial applications where pumps have to deal with the
combination of high liquid temperatures and difficult inlet con-
ditions or poor inlet pressure, the steady and reliable operation
is often jeopardised by cavitation. Many years of collaboration
with our customers in the industry, has taught us that it takes
a special pump to deal with cavitation in industrial applications
in order to avoid broken pumps and damaged systems.
Therefore, Grundfos has developed the CRN Low NPSH; a pump
that is specially designed to eliminate the risk of cavitation and
ensure a stable and reliable operation.

Advantages and the CRN Low NPSHStable operation
The CRN Low NPSH is a standard pump with an oversized inlet
impeller and chamber that improve the pump’s suction capa-
bilities. This construction prevents erosion from occurring and
destruction of pump parts such as the impeller, piping system
or valves from taking place. Additionally, the pump does not
produce as much noise as a traditional CR does. Despite the fact
that the CRN Low NPSH is subject to higher amount of stress
than traditional pumps because of its improved inlet design,
it ensures a stable operation.
Compact system design
Because of the CRN Low NPSH, it is possible to design a more
compact system; that is a system that does not take up too
much room. The CRN NPSH reduces the excess pressure itself,
and do not require any additional tank to provide supplementary
pressure. In boiler feed applications, where many big tanks are
gathered, a compact system is an advantage.
Longer lifespan
By eliminating the risk of cavitation, the CRN Low NPSH pro-
vides a more stable flow for a longer period of time. The pump
is no longer subject to the damage that cavitation causes on
different pump parts, and is ensured a considerable longer
lifespan than a traditional pump.

Grundfos CRN MAGdrive
Hermetic sealed pump operation
In industries where pumping of dangerous and aggressive
liquids is an integrated part of the daily operation, safety is top
priority. Pumps that leak are dangerous for their surroundings
and neither suitable nor safe for handling that kind of liquids.
Years of close cooperation with our clients in the industry, has
taught us that the traditional CR shaft seal solution, is unsuit-
able for the handling of aggressive liquids.
Therefore, Grundfos has developed the CRN MAGdrive; a ver-
tical multi-stage centrifugal pump. With the CRN MAGdrive,
Grundfos has designed a sealless pump for industrial applica-
tions, which do not leak. Thanks to the magnetic drive, the
pump is hermetically sealed, and do not present any risk to its
surroundings.

Advantages and the CRN MAGdriveLeak-free pump
Because of the magnetic drive, the CRN MAGdrive is a hermeti-
cally sealed pump. Obviously, the most noticeable advantage of
such a construction is that the pump does not leak, and thus, is
well suited for the handling of aggressive liquids. Not only does
the CRN MAGdrive ensure stable operation, it also secures the
workplace from escapes of toxic or aggressive media.
Safety above all
With the CRN MAGdrive, Grundfos has designed a completely
new and different multi-stage vertical pump – build upon the
well-reputed CR technology – for high-tech industrial clients.
The CRN MAGdrive does not compromise with safety; on the
contrary! It puts it above all, and ensures maximum safety in
the daily operation in the industry.
Superior quality coupling
The construction of the Grundfos CRN MAGdrive is based on a
standard Burgmann coupling. This is not an incident. Years of
experience and of product development explain the superior
quality of the Burgmann coupling; and thus, of the Grundfos
CRN MAGdrive coupling as well.

Advantages and the CRN High Pressure programmeComplete flow range
The CRN High Pressure comes in two variants; as a single pump
solution or as a double pump solution. In applications where a
low flow is key to success, one single pump is installed. Likewise,
in applications, where a large flow is important for a successful
process, two pumps are mounted in series. So, depending on
whether our clients are in need of a high or a low flow, Grundfos
can supply a high-pressure pump solution.
Robust design
The robust construction of the CRN High Pressure makes it
possible for the pumps to handle very high system pressures.
The high-pressure pumps have the same long lifespan as the
other pumps in the CR range despite the fact that they are con-
stantly working under extreme conditions.
CR range
The CRN High Pressure programme is available in all the
CR standard material variants, and can deliver a pressure of up
to 50 bar. In applications where the need of pressure and flow
exceeds what the CR range has to offer, Grundfos has another
solution: Our extensive range of high-pressure boosters, BM

Grundfos CR Pulley-head
Pump solution for distant areas
In applications in remote areas or in mobile applications where
no electric power is available, a special solution is necessary to
make pumps run. Over the years our clients have taught us that
it is indeed very important to be able to supply water in distant
places and in atypical applications such as mobile fire-fighting
facilities.
Therefore, Grundfos has developed the CR Pulley-head pump; a
standard CR pump with a belt-drive. For instance, the Grundfos
CR Pulley-head pump can be powered by either a diesel engine,
a steam-turbine that is mounted next to the pump, and thus do
not take up any further room or by a wind-powered DC-motor.

Uncompromising reliability
It comes as no surprise that it is key to be able to rely on a
pump’s operation in installations in distant places. In general,
a pump breakdown seldom comes as a pleasant surprise; but a
pump breakdown in a remote area is less than convenient when
service is not within a reasonable reach. Because of its robust
construction the Pulley-head is able to operate constantly under
extreme conditions day after day. With the CR Pulley-head; no
need to worry; the Grundfos CR Pulley-head does not compro-
mise with reliability.
Easy installation and maintenance-free pump
The CR Pulley-head is easy to install. All you need to do is to in-
stall the belt-drive and the pump is ready to run. And, as is the
case for all the Grundfos pumps in the CR range, the CR Pulley-
head requires a minimum of maintenance.
