GS1 Observations

• Visited over 30 sites over the past 4 months• Not scanning or only part scanning (ie SSCC only) of the label prior to

despatch in many sites• 3PL sites presented on average greater opportunities for

improvement • Varying degrees of label print quality and printer servicing• Top barcode(s) present biggest opportunity

• Solution Provider Feedback• Approximately only 50% of installations have regular maintenance

servicing included in their installation contracts

GS1 Perspective - What’s causing the problem?

• Grocery / Liquor suppliers are fairly disciplined when it comes to consumer unit & carton bar code verification,

• Very few send Pallet labels in for testing on a regular basis• GS1 Main supplier/member contacts are:

• Packaging• Admin• IT• Marketing

• Result is a general disconnect with logistics, operations and 3PL contacts. We typically don’t meet with them nor do they attend GS1 Training

• The message isn’t getting through to the right people

AustraliaGS1 New Service

GS1 in conjunction with industry has developed a new onsite pallet label quality and process assessment service.

It includes a pre-questionaire followed by a site visit that will document & assess:

– Label Quality– Label Application Process

Site visit report will be generated documenting findings, including photos of all labels assessed

Site visits could be conducted as a once-off or on an annual/bi-annual basis for benchmarking & comparison purposes

We recognise that efficient Pallet Labelling has a positive impact and we have put significant emphasis on this in 2010 to ensure we comply with our customers’ Pallet Labelling standards on a consistent basis. We are extremely grateful for the support

we have received from Andrew Steele and the GS1 Team which has brought this subject into focus within our organisation.

The GS1 onsite label assessment service was a particularly valuable part of our project; this not only tested our label quality but also gave feedback on label

grading, label positioning, our printers and the overall application procedures. Moreover, the GS1 visit to our 3PL prompted much healthy debate and emphasised

the importance of Pallet Labelling in the overall Supply Chain.

Our Pallet Labelling project and the activities we have undertaken with GS1 has improved our Pallet Labelling significantly and we now consistently achieve 98%

conformance.
