CONFESSIONS

The Rite of Reconciliation, the full title often shortened to confessions or penance, is a Sacrament that needs to be used more by all of us Catholics. The rite itself that you will experience Monday evening December 17th is basically the first part of the Mass up to but without the offertory and the rest of the Eucharist. I’m asking Fr. Joseph to preach. The point is a communal acknowledge of sin and more importantly of God’s mercy and how that works in our lives. After the individual confessions and prayerful penances in church, then one by one, the congregation simply departs. Receiving God’s forgiveness is to receive Jesus His Son more fully into our lives this Christmas. So, you’re invited to come, bow down before Him, turn away from the darkness of evil and face the rising Morning Star, the sun, who is the Son of God, come to heal us from our sins. See you at 5:30 mass.

Father Alan,

I just wanted to take a second to thank you for your

business, and your recent purchase from our store.

Know that a por!on of the sale you just made was

poured into making the world a be"er place. Whether

it's helping men live more emo!onally and spiritually

free, dona!ng to mul!ple orphanages around the world,

pouring resources into stopping sexual slavery or

helping fund founda!ons to cure illness. Know that our

hearts here at Redemp!on Road Coffee are focused on

giving back in the most impac%ul ways we know how.

Thank you again.

Happy 70th Birthday Father Alan!!! We love you and appreciate you more each day. Thank you for being our Angel.

That God called me to be a priest and serve the Church for these past 43 years has been a humbling experience, and at the same time the best possible life I could imagine living. I get the Prophet Zephaniah in the first reading: “Shout for joy!” I also get the importance of each of us asking as they do in the Gospel: “What shall I do?” Consider a life of service in pastoral care and listen for God’s calling you to a vocation.

Vocations—Called to Serve

Catechism Connecting Lectionary

Dear Families and Friends of Guardian Angels Parish,

Growing up, on our birthdays (there were eight of us!) my mother always prepared whatever we wanted for supper as well as a poppy seed cake (her cooking specialty was always baking anything). Of course little kids aren’t going to ask for prime rib, rack of lamb, or lobster. Strangely enough, I always asked for sloppy joes, which remains my ultimate comfort food to this day; I know, it is strange. The good thing was that all my siblings liked sloppy joes, as well. She made it from scratch; the canned Manwich brand doesn’t quite meet up to my higher standards. To this day, I think it is still best with ground venison, but then, I’m a brat. Old guernsey doesn’t quite do it.

But this year is going to be different: Pancake Breakfast, with a candle in the cakes! I honored and humbled to be your Pastor and share my birthday with you. I am now officially 70.

I can’t believe that it is already seventy years. When I look back I realize just how much I’ve been blessed! While I thought as a child that I would grow up to be a dairy farmer with my own herd of guernseys, Vatican II hit me upside the head, and my imagination by the Grace of God took another turn. If I add up the years in seminary with the years ordained, it’s 56 years, which means of my whole life, I’ve only spent 14 years not involved with church, but if I add the years as an altar boy since 4th grade . . .

Anyway, I am very grateful to God for this life! I look back, the good times far outweigh the bad. But I also am learning to look forward. I must say it is far harder to imagine this future. Like many people, I can easily get lost in the violence in the world, the environmental issues, the anxieties of the economy, etc. I have no control over any of this, so letting all that go is something to work on. I am learning through prayer, reading, and conversation with some great friends, that, with clear focus, there’s a very satisfying life yet to be lived. Even if and when I should retire, I am planning, if God will have it, that I can continue to live here in Colorado. I get excited about your parish’s future building plans and would love to see this campus set of buildings completed for the greater glory of God.

The point is: there is a future, and even at the end of the day, the future is by the Mercy and Grace of God, the Resurrection and Eternal Life. Life is a gradual detachment from the things of this world, and an acquisition for the things of Heaven. I am a very blessed human, and would wish all this, the same for you and yours. With you all, I have only great thanks.

Gratefully yours,

Fr. Alan

Crowds, tax collectors, and Roman soldiers came to Jesus, asking what they each should do in their lives. Thus he begins his mission to the marginalized, the sinners, and even the perpetrators of violence. In other words, Jesus comes with mercy and announces the reign of God from his own baptism. Thus the Church also shows mercy, especially to the poor by cheerful charity and random acts of kindness, see Catechism # 2447 where the works of mercy are listed.
