Dear Friends,

Welcome one and all to Te Guardian Angels 32nd Gala Dinner, our primary undraising event held onceeach year. We are pleased to wish our long-time supporters in attendance tonight, as well as guests less amiliarwith our organization, an enjoyable and memorable evening.

As struggling economic times continue, many communities across the nation have been orced to layo police,including Oakland, Caliornia, and Newark, Camden, and Paterson, New Jersey. In these cities, alreadyhigh crime rates escalated as a result o recent layos. Mayors and police departments in these communities

reached out to Te Guardian Angels or help, and we have responded in orce. We sent seasoned patrols tothese areas who are working to help concerned local citizens orm their own Guardian Angels chapters. Our

goal, as always, is to lend a hand, empowering everyday citizens to help themselves.

We also helped curb a dangerous situation in Huntington Station, New York. Te city was under siege bygang members - Bloods, Crips, MS13s and Latin Kings. Te problem was so grave that the Huntington schoolboard decided to close the Jack Abramson Middle School because o random drive-by shootings and gang

ghts occurring in and around the school in broad daylight. Never beore had a school in the U.S.A. beenclosed due to the violence out on the streets. Te Huntington Housing Authority asked the Guardian Angels to

patrol Huntington Station. Working in partnership with the police or several months now, we are bringing

about results. Crime and gang violence is down dramatically and the closed school will hopeully reopenin September. We have established a base in the projects there and are running a Junior Guardian AngelsProgram or area youth on Saturdays. Based on the success in Huntington Station, other towns in Nassau andSuolk are requesting our assistance.

Hollywood, too, has discovered Te Guardian Angels. wo popular television series Glee, and Te Ofce,have eatured grassroots groups wearing red berets and red satin jackets in recent months. In Glee, a youth

patrol called the Bullywhips walks the school halls, protecting students rom bullying, intimidation andharassment. Tis takeo gives a nod to the successul anti-bullying programs we have long provided to schools.

We continue our good work in Washington Heights-Inwood where our community services center extends

programs and assistance to over 500 youth and adults each week. All o our youth programs all within ourRole Model Zone, the comprehensive outreach program weve established in communities and our website. Wecan only continue these programs with you by our side. In the past, you have been generous and we thank you

or your support. May we work together to saeguard amilies and guide youth to turn away rom violence andlead productive, contributing lives.

The Reality

Every day, we receive calls and letters rom individuals pleading or help to overcome violencein their worlds. Tese calls only conrm the increases in violence, harassment, and intimidationreported daily in newspapers and research surveys. Bullies, predators, and gangs, in increasingnumbers, are creating ear and danger in our communities. Te perpetrators lurk in schools,neighborhoods, streets, subways and the Internet.

The Dream

Tat all children will enjoy a sae environment in which they can rise to their ull potentialand develop sel-esteem, condence and pride o accomplishment through a contribution andcommitment to society.

The Goal

o motivate teachers, parents and children to create a saer, more powerul uture through ourprograms ocused on personal saety, civic contribution, value development and cyber security.o bring violence prevention programs to schools across America or the benet o students,amilies, and teachers. o serve as a resource or training teachers in violence prevention atinstitutions o higher learning.

The Plan

Trough increased partnership with educational, business, cultural and religious institutions inour communities, we will solidiy and expand our pragmatic and positive role model programs.

We will expand and enhance our programs ocused on personal saety, neighborhood saety,cyberspace saety and civility, with a special emphasis on overcoming social and educationaladversity. In concert with our nations schools, we will continue our ground-breaking work todevelop curricula illustrating and documenting the benets o violence prevention.

In September, we were saddened by the passing o our dear riend and long-time supporter,Jim Winner. Perhaps Jim was best known around the world as the inventor o the popular carantithet device, Te Club. But what most people didnt know is that Jim and his amilybelieved in the concept o Improve- Dont Move. He chose to base his successul company,

Winner International, in his beloved hometown o Sharon, PA. When tough economic timesravaged Sharon and the Shenango Valley, the Winner Family hunkered down and investedtheir money in business development and job creation, benetting communities throughout

Western PA. Tey bought and restored buildings to better the region. Tey increased theirphilanthropic eorts, with donations to charitable organizations, scholarship unds, churches,and schools.

Jims wie, Donna, and daughter, Karen, embraced and embellished Jims avorite causes. In

addition to helping communities in PA and Ohio, the Winner Family became supporters oTe Guardian Angels. Jim became aware o the Angels mission and good works as a result oworking with Mary on an advertising project or Te Club when she was at WABC radio inthe 1990s. At that time, the Angels eorts had cleaned up the imes Square area during anera when crack and crime were major problems in mid-town. When we lost our headquartersbecause o the rising rents in the area, knowing wed be homeless within a ew days, Jimound out and sent a very generous donation to make sure we would have a home o our own.

Over the years, Jim and his amily would help spread Te Guardian Angels concept whereverthey traveled, in PA and Ohio. In the last year, due to their groundwork, we started a chapterin Youngstown. Jim Winner, in short, was the best ambassador that Te Guardian Angelshas ever had.

We are honored to have been a part o Jim Winners remarkable lie and we will continue tocelebrate his legacy o supporting the Guardian Angels. Tank you, Donna and Karen, orall that you have done and continue to do or the Angels. We will never orget Jims deeplyspiritual, charitable, and warm personality. We are eternally grateul to you, and we will misshim dearly.

Community Safety Patrols Te heart and soul of Te Guardian Angels since 1979.

Comprised of volunteers who patrol streets, subways, neighborhoods,and community events to saeguard citizens o all ages.

Community services include grati paint-outs, park reclamation, rstaid, sel deense and saety seminars or vulnerable populations, andemergency responders.

Educational Programs and Community Involvement NYCDOE Contracted Vendor since 2006.

Te Angels provide Student Support Services to students, professionaldevelopment programs to educators, and programs or parents andcommunity members. opics include bullying, gangs, cyberbullying,youth violence, leadership, confict resolution and school prideassemblies.

Te Guardian Angels Role Model Zone

Assemblies and workshops are conducted in schools that focus onPositive Peer Pressure, Confict Resolution, and Antibullying. Troughthese programs, youth learn about alternatives to joining gangs,controlling anger, understanding how arguments and substance abusecan turn into violence, and the key role o kindness, understandingand orgiveness in reducing bullying and cyberbullying. RMZ serves toelicit saety consciousness within the school community.

Junior Guardian AngelsTe Junior Guardian Angels, our early prevention program or children rom 7 to 11, teachesvalues and instills a sense o purpose.

With so much peer pressure to choose violence as a means o resolving disputes, this programexerts a strong, positive infuence on the childs development. It teaches each child how tomake correct choices, and helps them to recognize that they have talents and interests thatare o value.

Te program uses a variety o teaching tools - rom art projects and puppets to workshopswith community leaders, police and re departments - all o which osteran appreciation and respect or each childs neighborhood.

Te youngsters develop sel-esteem through role-playing, verbal deenseskills, and community projects that give them a sense o purpose.

Children have participated through Junior Guardian Ater-School ClubPrograms, including programs administered through the YMCA oGreater New York. Recent grants by the New York City Department o

Youth and Community Development have urthered delivering these lie-shaping programs to todays youth.

Urban Guardian Angels

Urban Guardian Angels, or teens 12 to 16, provides an alternative to gangs and drugs througha supportive club environment dedicated to community service and personal responsibility.Our program has been adapted to work through the New York City Public School System,the YMCA o Greater New York, and the New York Housing Authority as well as in otherGuardian Angels chapters, such as Washington D.C.

Within the school system, teens are recommended by teachers and principals. Te programocuses on those who need to improve attendance or behavior, or who ace other adjustmentchallenges. It also provides structured weekend recreational activities that combine un witheducation and the challenges o group dynamics. Many participants have successully turnedaway rom the lure o drugs and gang lie to become role models or their peers and localcommunity.

o date, the Urban Angels have serviced 1,200 teens and preteensin crime and violence prevention education, as well as character-building education. In addition, participants in these programshave provided community service in the orm o approximately

50 service-related projects linked to community saety. Tanksto the generosity o our supporters, eight scholarships have beenawarded to our achievers!

In 1979, Curtis Sliwa ounded the Guardian Angels to protect New Yorkers rom theimmediate dangers acing them on the streets and in the subways every day. Sixteen yearslater, in 1995, citizens called or assistance to deal with a new set o threatscyber threats.Te danger no longer stops at our doorsteps; children are vulnerable to online predationthat can be dicult to detect and stop. Te Guardian Angels responded to citizens pleas bylaunching CyberAngels.

CyberAngels oers guidance in matters o internet security, cyberbullying, and online saety.Volunteers respond to individuals requests or help in potentially dangerous situations, andreach out into the community to educate children and adults alike.

When Mary Sliwa joined the Guardian Angels in 1996, she took charge o the nascentCyberAngels and shaped it into the community-oriented saety program it is today. In 1998,under her direction, CyberAngels debuted in Washington, DC at the Focus on Children:

Internet Saety summit, where it earned recognition rom President Bill Clinton. Clintonbestowed the Presidential Service Award on the organization or its positive impact on thecommunity.

Anthony and Katya have been the Program Managers o the CyberAngels program since2002. Under their leadership, the CyberAngels continue to provide a sae virtual playgroundor our children. Leading authorities on Internet saety, security, and support, they extendthe Guardian Angels mission intocyberspace and ensure that the

Angels name remains synonymouswith Saety.

ips to Help Stop CyberbullyingDont respond. I someone bullies you, remember that your reaction is usuallyexactly what the bully wants. It gives him or her power over you. Who wants toempower a bully?

Dont retaliate. Getting back at the bully turns you into one and reinorces thebullys behavior. Help avoid a whole cycle o aggression.

Save the evidence. Te only good news about digital bullying is that the harassingmessages can usually be captured, saved, and shown to someone who can help. Youneed to do this even i its minor stuf, in case things escalate.

Talk to a trusted adult. You deserve backup. Its always good to involve a parentbut - i you cant - a school counselor usually knows how to help. Sometimes bothare needed. I youre really nervous about saying something, see i theres a way toreport the incident anonymously at school.

Block the bully. I the harassments coming in the orm o instant messages, texts,or prole comments, do yoursel a avor: Use preerences or privacy tools to blockthe person. I its in chat, leave the room.

Be civil. Even i you dont like someone, its a good idea to be decent and not sinkto the other persons level. Also, research shows that gossiping about and trashtalking others increases your risk o being bullied. reat people the way you wantto be treated.

Dont be a bully. How would you eel i someone harassed you? You know the oldsaying about walking a mile in someones shoes; even a ew seconds o thinkingabout how another person might eel can put a big damper on aggression. Tatsneeded in this world.

Be a friend, not a bystander. Watching or orwarding mean messages empowersbullies and hurts victims even more. I you can, tell bullies to stop or let themknow harassment makes people look stupid and mean. Its time to let bullies knowtheir behavior is unacceptable - cruel abuse o ellow human beings. I you cantstop the bully, at least try to help the victim and report the behavior.
