Alderney What Christmas Means
Guernsey What Christmas Means
It has been another busy year for us here at Guernsey Stamps. Our first venture into the Chinese New Year proved to be extremely popular with you all and we can’t wait to show you the Year of the Goat in 2015. We are delighted that our Bayeux Tapestry and Ian Fleming issues for Alderney have been so well received by you all too.
Europa’s National Music instrument issue gave us a great opportunity to bring the Chifournie to life using AR (augmented reality) technology again. It was a real treat to see and hear this very unusual instrument being played by a professional (simply download the SEPAC app and hover your smart phone or tablet over the stamps and watch the video).
This year’s Christmas issues for Guernsey and Alderney will be released on 6th November and are truly delightful. Illustrated by local school children as part of a design competition we were impressed with the amount of work and effort the children put in to their designs. It was very difficult selecting the winners but we are thrilled with the final set.
And finally, possibly our most poignant stamp issue yet, Stories of the Great War is the first in a five part series and looks at six individuals, all from Guernsey, and the impact the war had on their life. This issue will be released on Remembrance Day.
We do hope you enjoy our latest stamps and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

NEW ISSUE: Set of seven stamps: £4.09 Issue date: 6th November 2014
The wonderful images featured on Guernsey Post’s 2014 Guernsey and Alderney Christmas stamp issues have all been created by local schoolchildren in the islands.
Working closely with the schools, the Philatelic team at Guernsey Post presented a special competition idea, which meant the youngsters had to get creative and begin thinking about the festive season in early springtime!
There is generally a relatively long production process associated with any stamp issue, but the programme for the Islands’ Christmas editions had to allow plenty of time for the children to create their images – in some schools a whole four lessons were taken up by the activity in order that the children could produce their very best work. The schedule had to fit in with school terms and also include time for Royal approval to be granted.
The competition helped to introduce the children involved to concepts of design, composition, use of media and techniques, as well as collaboration and working to a deadline.

Alderney: What Christmas Means
Winners each received a pack including a First Day Cover and a Presentation Pack containing the full set of mint stamps, plus all participating schools received a cash donation towards school funds.
The level of entries exceeded expectations and the overall standard of the designs was superb; the resulting stamps form a truly charming Christmas collection.
Commenting on these very special issues Dawn Gallienne, Head of Philatelic at Guernsey Post said. “We are absolutely delighted with the Guernsey and Alderney Christmas 2014 stamp sets. The designs are delightful, using children’s illustrations is the perfect way to capture the spirit of Christmas.”
We also caught up with one of the winners, nine year old Georgia Winstanley of Hautes Capelles school, who told us that she was “amazed and excited” that the stamps she had designed would soon be winging their way across the world on Christmas cards, letters and packages.

NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.73 Issue date: 11th November 2014
When Kitchener’s call to arms went up in 1914, Guernsey men and women eagerly stepped forward to “do their bit”. Amongst the first wave of volunteers were Private Yves Cataroche (41p) and Major George Le Page (54p).
Major Le Page led D Company, the Guernsey Contingent of the 6th Royal Irish Regiment, but was killed in January 1916; one of the first islanders to die.
A devoted leader, his men described him as ‘like a father’ and their memorial to him hangs in Guernsey’s Castel Church.
The Regiment went on to fight at the Somme. Young Yves survived but was hospitalised at the Battle of Ypres. Upon his recovery, he was transferred to the newly-formed Royal Guernsey Light Infantry (RGLI) and went back to the front. He was badly wounded again and honourably discharged in 1918.
Dorothy Nicolls (55p) joined a munitions factory in Chilwell, Derbyshire. She was awarded the Medal of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her courage and devotion during two large explosions at the plant.

The Salvation Army set up respite huts for soldiers and they were staffed by Salvation Army officers along with small groups of ‘sisters’. One of these was young salvationist Ada Le Poidevin (74p).
Lt Frank de Mouilpied Lainé’s (66p) brother, 2nd Lt Thomas de Jersey Lainé, was one of those left behind in France but sadly has no known grave. The brothers were in the RGLI and involved in its first major battle, Cambrai, where the Regiment’s numbers were decimated.
The men faced another major battle at Lys and suffered devastating casualties once more. The Battalion was finished as a fighting force. Frank died in 1922 as a result of injuries he sustained in action. He was awarded the Military Cross for exemplary gallantry.Ada’s cousin, Private Latimer Le Poidevin (83p), fought alongside the Lainé brothers and Yves Cataroche. On his return, he set down his experiences in a remarkably accurate notebook and then never spoke of them again.

Paulo Magalhães started the Postcrossing project in 2005. Paulo loved to receive postcards from friends and family across the globe and wanted to receive even more postcards from other countries too. He came up with the idea of connecting people worldwide through postcards.
After just a few days people were already signing up to the website to take part. The hobby has had tremendous success and now, several years over 20million postcards have been exchanged via Postcrossing.
