200th Anniversary of the Guernsey

Press & Star

The Life of Beatrix Potter

Page 2: Guernsey Stamps Philatelic News July 2013

Welcome to the summer edition of the Philatelic News 2013.

We have two very exciting issues out this month. Our first issue sees us working closely with our local newspaper, The Guernsey Press and Star. It is 200 years since the first newspaper, which was then called ‘The Star’, was published and we have been lucky enough to pull out some wonderful headlines from the first edition right through to the latest edition, celebrating their 200th Anniversary. An issue with some wonderfully historic events, including a stamp published by the newspaper during World War II!

Finally, it has been 70 years since the death of much loved author Beatrix Potter. To celebrate the life of this extraordinary writer and illustrator this Alderney set of stamps features new and evocative illustrations that capture the essence of Beatrix Potter and the wonderful animals which she drew her inspiration from.

I do hope you enjoy these July issues as much as we enjoyed putting them together.

The Guernsey Press and Star, reaches a milestone birthday this year and we have marked the occasion with a commemorative issue that features miniature interpretations of six key front pages from the publication’s illustrious past.

Editor Richard Digard told us:

‘We are delighted that our special anniversary is being marked with this stamp issue, which so absolutely captures the essence and history of our newspaper over the last two centuries’.

Dating back to 1813, The Press as it is known locally has become an integral part of island life and along with the postal service, has worked diligently to keep islanders in touch and up-to-date. The two institutions have enjoyed strong links over the years and in the early 20th century they were located across the road from each

other in Smith Street, St Peter Port. A pipeline - still thought to exist - ran between them and special tubes carrying telegrams were propelled through it, landing in the editor’s tray for the evening paper.

In 1940, the Channel Islands were invaded by Germany and occupied for five years. British stamps could no longer be brought into the island and by 1941 stocks ran dry. The General Postal Office - as we then were - commissioned the Press’ commercial print department to produce runs of half-shilling and shilling postage stamps. The green 1/2d version is featured in the 55p stamp and recently trod the boards of the world stage on the cover of acclaimed novel ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’.

It is a fitting tribute to have produced an issue dedicated to this long-serving publication, which once helped us with our own stamps. Richard Digard said: ‘We couldn’t be more pleased that 70-odd years later you are returning the favour!’

“My favourite stamp in the set is the 55p stamp, showing the mouse in the onion patch with Beatrix kneeling on the ground pulling up onions. I love the low down perspective - peering through the vegetable patch- and the fact that the background fades to nothing leaving the imagination to fill in the gaps. We thoroughly enjoyed illustrating all of the stamps but I think this is the best of the set.”

Beatrix Potter is one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors. She wrote and illustrated many wonderful books with unique animal characters full of personality such as Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and Jemima Puddleduck. We are delighted to have created a very special issue to celebrate her life. Jay Almer, Managing Director of Guernsey based design agency, The Potting Shed was already familiar with the stories and characters of Beatrix Potter, like many of us he grew up reading her books, and drinking from Peter Rabbit mugs! He was always totally captivated and inspired by the beauty of the illustrations. Here Jay explains a little bit more about how The Potting Shed set about designing the stunning materials for this issue. “The research element of a project like this is crucial. It allows the designer to gather a mental picture based around the facts of the subject. For example, the first stamp composition that we came up with, that which inspired the whole concept, was the 40p stamp of Beatrix walking down the road towards her village of Near Sawry. We imagined her returning to the village after one of her inspiring walks in

the Lake District and illustrated this with the rabbit looking up from the grass below the sign-post. We discussed and considered the style of the whole project quite a bit. We wanted to pay homage to the original, beautiful book illustrations, but naturally to add our own twist. We decided the way to achieve this was with interpretative colour illustrations. Beatrix Potter herself invariably took factual points and spun a beautiful story with them and we wanted to create our own set of mini stories based on her life.Projects such as this have many individual stages and inevitably take more time than one might imagine. Once happy with the original composition ideas we re-drew these as a simple black and white outline sketches. Then we moved onto the computer for colour consistency to create a wash of colour across the entire background of the pictures. Then illustration starts again; we worked up all the designs with coloured pencils to give the correct tone, texture and detail. This is what gives the material a playful illustrative style as well as a hand-drawn touch.
